Screeching all day long for years I have high frequency hearing loss…I’m good along the graph and then I plummet I work in a hearing clinic and my practitioner popped a couple of hearing aids in while at work to try them out and see if it helps…I’ve been wearing them for 3 days and on the first day I could still hear the screeching and after the second and third day I have no screeching😃😃😃 I wear the Starkey livio 2400s with a size 2 50 DB receiver and wow what a difference ❤ nothing that has been screeching in my ears whatsoever

Just the sound of your reassuring voice has helped me to relax and sleep better. I listened to the different sounds for tinnitus on your video but none are what I hear. Also, I have been to medical practitioners but that greatly increased my anxiety when they told I need more extensive testing.

Thank you for this video. I have heard of so many people with tinnitus finding major relief with hearing aids. Even my own audiologist recommended them for me and said just using the hearing aid would mask my tinnitus as it makes every sound around us crisp. I don’t even have hearing loss but most hearing aids have tinnitus maskers as well.

I have it very bad and also hear multiple sounds in my head. A motor running, sounds of instruments, or what sounds like a train or plane. This is with the buzzing. I got hearing aides about 3 months ago and there has been no change, it drives me crazy. I went to 3 different ENTs before getting them and they all told me don't get them thinking they will help but if they do it's a bonus. They said get the aides because your hearing is low. Oh, and I got the Resound aides

Great takeaways I got from this video, (some points do not apply all systems): The frequency of your tinnitus is likely to be close to the area of greatest hearing loss you have. The different broadband AND nature sounds can vary in frequency response in order to more closely match an individuals tinnitus. Masking sounds can be customised to hone in on your tinnitus rather than just a flat frequency response curve. Apps allow an individual to make changes to the onboard tinnitus features of their devices.
    Questions:
If you have tinnitus primarily in one ear do the masking sounds get played in that ear or both ears?
I have constant tonal 6kHz in the left ear and I notice at night in bed a pulsing whoosh following the tempo of my heartbeat. What is the medical importance of getting pulsatile tinnitus checked?
I notice when watching TV with and sound system that the volume of the tonal tinnitus increases if I turn up the volume of the TV. Is it common for tinnitus to change in perceived volume as ambient noise increases?
    Thanks Mathew.

Thanks for all the great content man, this is all really appreciated. :) I am particularly interested in what you mentioned regarding tonal tinnitus and the relief that you get through Signia hearing aids. I have had tonal tinnitus on one side since 2007, and recently have gone through surgery for a choleostoma. Due to the surgery, I have moderate to severe hearing loss, and when you mentioned Signia providing relief from your tonal tinnitus, was super hopeful. Was that through a masking sound which covered the sound of your tinnitus? or the silent notch therapy Signia has, and was the effect immediate?
Looking forward to more great content! :)

The closest sound that describes my tinnitus is what you term "electric" with intermittent squealing tonal change. I personally described it as similar to a fax machine. I am now using Phonak Audeo and while it does help significantly, I do still experience constant tinnitus getting louder especially when having headache or migraine or near objects that buzz or hum. I have lost the hair cells and according to the audiologist, it was probably occupational while in military service.

Don't know if you've explored some phone apps but they allow you to create a lot of your own ambient masking noise. My home has a surround sound speakers and I use these apps to create really reasonably pleasant masking noises for terrible tenitus in both ears.
And a lot of alcohol. I'm just kidding about that.

I am shopping for the best device this week. How about a video from you kind sir, with price (ranges) ?? Thank you for all the great information. My tinnitus is caused by 1. A bad inner ear infection from childhood (right) which left that ear AT 45% losss with high pitched tinnitus 40 years ago. Then 2. I was marketing ands touring with some very loud rock bands through the 70's and 80's like Elton, The Who, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Def Leppard & Ozzy. That business left about 70% hearing in the left ear which has grown significantly. I cannot afford the top tear brands but I am hoping the 2nd best devices from Signia, Phonak & Starkey will still offer my needed relief from 24/7 ringing in both ears with one being very high (almost to the dog whistle), and the left in a much more rolling and roaring sound. Can I see close to the same relief in a device at 4 to 5K, or should I sell a kidney and get the Top models at 7500 to 9000??? Thanks again, have a blessed day! Wynn

Thanks for a very good video! I started out with a pair of Widex hearingaids with zen program for my tinnitus. Loved the fractal tones. But changed brand to a set of Phonak hearingaids later on. I do miss the zen program as I don´t like phonaks tinnitus noices at all. But for some reason my tinnitus is much less noticeable with Phonak hearing aids so I have skipped a special tinnitus program for now. My tinnitus consists of many different noices. Teakettle perhaps and often some pure tones as well. It is qute low in frequency. 24/7 but now it does not change every day wich makes it so much easier to manage.

My question however is with an additional sound from the masked itself plus the tinnitus Joe would you hear anything else at all clearly with now two noises in your ears ?
Sounds like an odd question but I can’t comprehend how another noise constantly added to the tinkers would leave much room for any other sounds
Hoping you will reply to me

I've had tinnitus for about 10 years. Just Ordered the Jabra hearing aids from Costco. I seem to always have either pink or white noise in both ears and many times get ringing around 3000-3800 Hz on top of the noise. I've watched many of your videos and playing around a few tinnitus iphone apps for sound masking and neuromodulation. I'm hoping to set up the apps for my tinnitus and get relief when I get the hearing aids.

Could you tell me please, without hearing loss, would I use tinnitus masking all the time? How long does it generally take to habituate? I was also wondering how the specific brand is chosen since there is quite a range of prices. As for tone, in one ear I have “hissy cicadas” and the other, which I mostly don’t hear, sounds very much like a gas powered edge trimmer. Interestingly, when I use the vacuum cleaner or blow drier, I do have a break sometimes lasting several minutes, after which the hissy cicadas change to something more like gurgling. 🤷‍♀️

Low tone heading out due to endolymphatic hydrops. The tinnitus I deal with ranges from a a car horn with a train and crickets in the background. The tinnitus changes and can have a melodic tone to it. It can get horrible at night and even wake me up. Luckily, this syndrome usually resolves and then I just have the high frequency and I have gotten used to that.

Probably tea kettle comes closest...a constant tone between C6 and C#6. Interestingly, when my audiologist played a static sound from soft to loud and back, the loud static noise knocked out my tinnitus for awhile.
Also, my first hearing test years ago using constant tones made the tinnitus so loud that I couldn't hear a lot of the tones around the tinnitus tone, causing me to fail the hearing test and be rejected for a job. Years later I learned they should have used pulsed tones...those don't exacerbate my tinnitus, plus I can easily differentiate between a pulsed tone and the constant tinnitus tone(s). When tinnitus is exacerbated, another secondary frequency kicks in (albeit not as loud as the primary tone).

My tinnitus is a combination of "shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" continuously, plus ringing noise. Intermittently but rarely I also get a high pitched noise. I'm very sceptical about hearing aids masking tinnitus. I know that my tinnitus is worse after driving my car or being a passenger in a car, or after mowing my lawn, or using a kitchen appliance like a hand-held beater or food processor. Thus, in my case it's a matter of vehicle and appliance vibrations and noise perhaps through bone conduction to my one and only functioning ear drum.

After 9 months, idk how I'm gonna get over this. I did 3 straight months of strict violet noise masking but had to switch to water sounds after reading that structureless sound can actually make tinnitus worse. What I use now doesn't work as well, and my tinnitus has gotten worse in the last couple weeks. I'm constantly annoyed, irritated, and worried. I can't relax. I can't sleep comfortably. I have to constantly play loud sounds 24/7 to drown some of it out. I'm so tired of it.

I have no idea if my tinnitus is as bad as yours. I expect not. When mine started it drove me crazy. Literally. I had to be admitted to hospital. I could not sleep or concentrate, either. Maybe I'm OCD, too. I got fixated on it. I had to go on anti-depressants to live with it. After about 2 years it seems my brain adjusted to it. I just went to audiologist recently because it got louder. Basically, I have moderate to severe hearing loss above 2K. I'm debating whether hearing aids are an option that can help me.

@@tonyk438 I'm really sorry you're struggling. Mine felt better for a time last year and then got worse. I've been on antidepressants/antianxiety for a few months now and I think that's helping a lot. I figured it's a very simple approach to try and tackle tinnitus from the anxiety side of things. If I can just relax, maybe I can forget it. And I think I have to a degree. While it's still there, I don't notice it as much anymore because I'm less worried. And most importantly, my reaction to it isn't the same anymore. I find comfort in knowing I can be distracted and that Susan shore is still working on her treatment which is sounding promising with each update. Hang in there Tony. It doesn't feel like a promising solution to be asked to try and forget about it but neuroplasticity is real and it does help if you can find some way to achieve and commit to it.

Great video! But I’m worried that after so many years of terrible constant humming/ buzzing/hissing noises and just about putting it to the back of my mind and kind of ignore it. I am concerned that if I go have my hearing test the tinnitus will be spoken about again so brought back to my thoughts!
No one can see just how bad it is and when you tell someone that you have tinnitus all they say is “ that must be awful “ then carry on about other things, unlike a bruised body or broken bone that can be seen . Enough of me going on.

None of the masking tones come close to matching my tinnitus. I would describe mine as a scintillating high-frequency noise that has features closer to a jet engine whine, cicadas at night in Florida, and a very high-pitched electrical sizzle and tinkling noises. The masks have FAR too much mid and low-frequency content. I have Meniere's disease in the ear that has tinnitus, although the tinnitus began years after that developed. Meniere's involves marked low-frequency hearing loss, not in the area of my tinnitus, although I have typical high-frequency hearing loss of aging in both ears. I tried some very expensive hearing aids and I was very disappointed. They dramatically improved speech clarity, but I thought they were awful at handling music. The miniature amplifies in hearing aids do a terrible job amplifying music, adding considerable distortion to subwoofer level bass and even noticeable distortion to high-frequency treble sounds. I could not stand wearing them when I listened to music on my high-end sound system at home. This is an area where all hearing aid technology appears to understandably fail. There is no way to get high-fidelity full-spectrum amplification out of these microscopic amplifiers.

I have phonak. My audiologist doesn't believe in masking sounds and won't program them for me. But when I did use them, I couldn't use the nature or beach sounds. My brain picks up when the tracks start over. The sounds just irritate me and stresses me out. The white noise never seemed to help when I had another audiologist. I have really high frequency tinnitus. Frequency changes sometime but the basic sound never really goes away. Almost like I get dual frequencies sometimes.

I'm only an expert is so far as I know what my ears like. And there are phone apps that, with speakers, create better masking sounds than anything hearing aids currently produce.
You still gotta find a way to get the sounds in your ears via headphones, glasses with audio ports, surround sound speakers, car speakers, or even just right out of your phone. There is tons and tons of Bluetooth options for little speakers you can carry with you.
I've created a massive array of speakers at my home and work and with the exception of short walks to my car I'm surrounded by noise which works really well to mask terrible tenitis in both ears.
And it's a weird life. If you get in my orbit you're going to hear my shush puppies.
