The cut 'wire' is nothing, it's a bit of string used for QC at the factory when they check for water ingress. It's found all over the interior used behind trims. But you're right about the tracker, thats where they're installed, that's why the carpets cut. As for the gateway, that's got an embedded sim, which receives your data from the Audi back end server such as web services, remote unlocking from the myaud app, last location etc which is why the theives removed it, hence why your MMI isn't working and the dash is showing component protection.
they cut the carpet looking for a tracker as the starter cut is in that fuse box and feeds are quite often taken from that fuse box. the lose wire is a airel for the keyless entry and start. the module will also be for the telematics and removing it will stop the factory tracker working. Nice car for the channel
with the signal booster being used all the car sees is the key so it has no idea the signal is being boosted. I don't think there's a way to detect the signal booster. keep your keys in a Faraday box and get a imobliser fitted to your car.
They simply use a lock pick or make their own key. Once inside they take a module out and replace it so it matches their own key, or they simply code a new key to the car and drive off as they do with BMW and Land Rovers. It takes less than 45s to get in and drive away. All the fancy alarms do nothing. You need a basis immobiliser and hidden switch on the fuel pump. Also move the OBD2 or change the type of socket and make an adaptor to give to your garage. Simple cheap effective ways to protect your car. All those expensive immobilisers and alarms run from the existing circuits, so if they are tampered with, they are of no use. Don't be scammed by alarm companies.
This is if not already fast becoming my favourite channel on UA-cam. You need ya own show , you showing some major bollocks doing what you do . My only complaint is and I'm sure I speak for all ...Not enough videos . I find myself wanting to watch one after the other just to see how things turn out , literally can't wait. Congratulations on everything.
Great work dean. Big risk at that money. The Only problem i find with stolen recovered cars is they are never worth hpi clear money as it’s so easy to find it’s been stolen with sites like total car check for £4. Then it instantly puts people off wanting to buy for the same price as a non stolen one and it will always have that stigma. Get it raffled off.
Diagnose Dan's latest video gives a good explanation of what a gateway module does.In this case removing the gateway module will rob the tracking device of the information it needs to function by shutting down all the modules within the car.
Jeez, you got some big balls Dean! I doubt there's anyone else who would have taken this car on! Hope it continues to work out for you, huge risk. Huge reward!
Ooooh, nice little find there Dean. Looks epic and a lovely motor. Glad you managed to get it started and hopefully just a re-code plus the carpet and other little pieces to get it back to normal! nice one mate!
Big gamble pays off Dean, love these cliffhangers until you validate the engine will start. Audi know how to charge for a bit of carpet ! Great content, looking forward to the journey on this one 👍🇬🇧😎
The Gateway module in any VW / Audi is the communication gate to the vehicles network, if it’s dead or missing the car will be completely dead. See this in many stolen vw group cars, will need correct software to function correctly
It was a big risk Dean without a shadow of a doubt. However you know what you are doing and even if it went wrong somehow you wouldn't make a loss. It is always nice to see a hard working guy like you get a bit of luck like this. Cheers, Bob
Hells bells what an absolutely blinding choice you made. I’m gonna go with some gut feeling from experience led you to make this astonishing decision. No way you fell on luck to this extent. Testament to your knowledge and insight Dean. What a stonker of a motor that is. This must surely give you a route to a nice tidy well earned profit. Good on ya mate!
All I can say is fair play mate. That was a huge gamble and looks like it’s gonna pay off big time. You’ve got some plums on ya to take such a risk but that’s testament to how well you and the channel are progressing. A sweet sweet motor in the best colour. Looking forward to the rest of the journey with it and maybe winning it on your competition platform lol 🤔. You never know 🤞🤞
Great video Dean, interesting car and nice colour too. I know you've explained a bit but perhaps you could tell us what checks you do on stolen cars like this one, my dad always used to say cars in the 90s (from police experience)could be "sabotaged" with needles and other nasty stuff. Do you carefully check physically or do Copart do that and guarantee it? I'm also fascinated by the how and why the car was stolen. My thoughts would be they didn't realise the rarity of the colour? Could have been an error, and do you think you'll get to the bottom of what they were looking for and indeed have you located a tracker? Finally as an "armchair" mechanic, are you going to look at the "running history" of the car , especially when stolen and perhaps share what the thieves did , ie how fast ? How long? In a pursuit? Soz for being an anorak! I like the car, but the only RS for me in your premises is a Rallye Sport one!!! Best wishes, Ben 🇬🇧🇺🇦🚌🚐
Love these videos, I’ve smashed through a load of these videos recently been a real big fan of fixing up cars since I can remember! Deffinatly throws motivation out there for people who just want to give it a go and see where it takes you! If you ever need a hand 😅 I’m all for it.
The interior is all ripped/cut out to get at the tracker… they know the main spots the trackers are hidden. After driving away, they get somewhere quiet, and work quickly to find the tracker, they don’t find it, they usually leave the car and monitor it and see if anyone finds it, if it remains after 48/72hrs or so they are free to drive to their work shop and strip the car and sell the parts.
Excellent result Dean, this one is gonna be potentially relatively easy. Great to see your gamble paid off, well deserved! Lovely car, can’t wait to see show it turns out 👌🏻
Lovely car - my S5 is in the same colour. But I do like an RS4 estate..... good bit of luck on the issues. Looking forward to seeing this "build"/rebuild :)
It’s the CAN gateway they removed, essentially the main hub/router for everything on the CAN network (so essentially everything electrical). What a result for it being such a cheap fix 👀
Superb easy fix the gateway can probably component protected so of you've access to odis remove the protection then code it to car hopefully take it out safe mode
Tip buy, for your car keys, faraday box? For car keys. Most vehicles are now equipped with keyless entry and ignition operated by electronic signals from your key fob (RFID). Now Mr. Thief and his friends seem to be catching up with advances in security technology impressively fast, and not surprisingly, they've found a way to intercept and clone those electronic signals, so they can steal your car even if your key fob is seemingly safe on the table in the hallway.
This is a prime reason why i overlooked buying an M4. Decided against it as I couldn't leave it anywhere relaxed in the knowledge that it would still be there when I came back.

That gateway module- what a touch! 😁 Shame the pricks had to destroy the carpet like that. But fingers crossed, could be a relatively straight forward project. Good luck mate! 👍
You definitely got some BIG BALLS dean, huge gamble! Makes fantastic content though lol. Definitely one of my favourite channels on UA-cam, keep them coming fella 👍
Wow.. that feeling you would of got in your stomach when you connected the control module and the car responded to the key and then when you open the door and saw the dash all lit up.. that must be like winning the jackpot.. Fairplay to you though.. it was a gamble that paid off.. 👍 👌
I'd say it was a little rich for an unknown, but given it's hpi clear and its only going to be a couple of grand in parts and labour to fix then it's a good buy.. Risky though lol 😆 well done.
That white wire that is cut is a water test sensor from when they do a water test at the factory. They cut them like that after the test. Nothing to worry about.
Would it make financial and logistical sense to maybe remove the passenger seat only, and cut and "splice" a new section of carpet to avoid dismantling the whole interior? It could be joined under the passenger seat and up the passenger footwell and under the centre console with minimal expense/effort and with absolutely no joints visible. People repair and patch house/business carpets all the time, why not with a car carpet?
I've no clue so I guessed 26k with the risk associated, so really glad it worked out for you at 40! Would its top end value be met as its stolen recovered, just because it has that history attached to it?
