Years back I put up this same crown. Made pattern pieces because videos were not too thorough. I literally forgot to do master bedroom ...oops! So now I'm trying to figure out cutting AANNDD I realized I put the crown up on the other rooms walls upside down...HAHA!! Looks good tho. So I will install MB crown the same way the rest of the house is...Upside down! Thanks! GREAT EASY VIDEO!!

Folks! This is what I gathered.. Copy the text and put it on your phone or print it. This man has ended my headaches and heartaches:
WOOD UPSIDE DOWN on the Right of Saw + Saw angled to the Right = Inside Cut Corner
WOOD UPSIDE DOWN on the Right of Saw + Saw angled to the Left = Outside Cut Corner
WOOD UPSIDE DOWN on the Left of Saw + Saw angled to the Right = Inside Cut Corner
WOOD UPSIDE DOWN on the Left of Saw + Saw angled to the Left = Outside Cut Corner
That pretty much sums up what I haven’t been able to figure out watching more videos then I care to admit. Appreciate you using the Kiss Method. If I made an error - please correct me and I will edit it. Thx. Chris in Kalamazoo

Great video. I have watched this several times. One add on to my miter I learned by watching was to add a taller skirt and this enabled me to get a better seat on the crown molding (top and bottom). I simply through bolted a 3/8" finished scrap piece of plywood to the fence on the left and right side of the blade (counter sunk the machine screws). Just make sure when you lower the blade that the housing clears the taller fence when cutting at a 45 degree angle.

Everyone else on UA-cam just telling you " you have to cut the top side down and cut at an angle" without mentioning that the saw placement on left or right will dictate if an inside or outside cut and just assuming you know that. This is the only one I saw that actually walked through the saw positions needed for each type of corner needed

One challenge not addressed in videos like this are when cutting crown, you're not cutting a 12" piece but rather a 12' piece. Keeping it on the fence perfectly with a piece that long can be difficult and cause the cut to be inaccurate. I prefer and compound-miter cut where the crown can lay flat to cut. All that aside great video, thumbs up from me.

2:53 You should have spent a bit more time explaining your markings on the miter table. I had to watch it a few times to take notes on the proper blade & molding placement, but once I had it, PRESTO! This simple idea made all the difference for me! That is the BEST part of this whole video. Turned crown molding into a no-brainer!

Gary, I will make another video and zoom in on the markings. There are two more ways I install crown that I want to demonstrate. Cutting the crown flat on the miter table and cutting the inside and outside angles and coping the cut to fit. Thanks for the comment and take care!

Thank you for putting this into words. Kind of a type of decision tree…you know if you need an outside or inside and on which side right or left. That is the easy part.
But then once I flipped it over and had it on the saw I would instantly go stupid!! Don’t know how many times I put the crown to the side waiting for a time when my brain was fresher but thinking about it constantly and then second guessing myself and in the end making mistakes anyway and wasting material. Cutting crown is a humbling experience indeed!Thank you again!!

Better than this old house instruction. Love to see you do the measurement and mark the piece and put it up. Do you measure your walls first, cut the pieces, then put it up or do you measure, cut the piece and then measure for the next wall?

Can you please explain angles for crown molding on angled ceilings. No one ever explains it.

    • @Zomby_Woof
      @Zomby_Woof 3 роки тому

I was trying to dope that out myself. I think a speed square or a protractor is part of the answer.
In my case, i was about to just ignore our slight vault and just run straight across, as I'm just running some crown below some existing molding.
I'd take the existing down and use that as a guide, but the previous owner was even more geometrically challenged than I am.
If I needed to conform to the existing line, I'd probably just use trial and error with crap molding, then transfer the angle to the good stuff.
I know there is another way to do this, using the 31 degree markings and laying the molding flat and tilting the blade. Presumably, you'd add the angles, but I'm not sure, and I'm out of extra pieces to experiment with.
This way works, but its only as precise as your ability to hold the work steady when you make your cut.
I'd hate to try addibg an angle while relying on my grip to hold the work to the fence.
As it is, I'm avoiding any situations where I would need both ends mitered other than a 90, as I would be making a big expensive scrap pile.

You are very welcome, glad I could help. That's why UA-cam is so good to share and view videos of things that we want to attempt ourselves.

Hi Mike, good video. I was just wondering how you put the permanent marker on the blue tape. Did you have to measure the angle between the fence and the tape to be 45 degrees?

One important detail that is seen in the video but not mentioned: The fence where the molding tilts and sit on has to be tall enough to support the molding sitting at 45 degree angle. And the fence should not stop the blade to cut all the way thru (my miter saw is fix and can't get thru !!!, might have to get another one). In this video, the tall fence is made in wood and somehow get attached flat to the metal fence.

"SAWSET PROTRACTOR" is the most accurate miter finder out there. No Math. No gimmick.
    Do the comparison.
