I'm listening to this with tears welling up in my eyes, my son is due on the 26th, and all I want to do is be the best father, husband, and human that I can be. I want my son to be proud of his old man.
I’m going to be 4 years sober this August and that’s something to be proud of. In the most humble manner possible, I couldn’t have done it without Jesus. Some truly terrible things happened to me over the last 3 1/2 years and I’m basically the modern version of Job from the Bible. Yet, 4 1/2 years ago. I called upon the Lord after being an atheist all through college and he opened the clouds and left me standing in the light.
“Got your chin held high as tears fall down, gut sucked in, chest stuck out” That’s how I feel a lot. I cry almost daily sometimes for no reason and start panicking, but I still have to put on a brave face and deal with the world, so sometimes I end up doing exactly that. Keep my chin up with tears on my face, and figure out how to keep moving forward and ignore the tears.
U nailed it! Keep on keeping on. Life is hard and life is easy. Your stamina and persistence will make a difference in this world. Keep ur chin up. Move forward!
When I hear the part “you don’t need to make a million just be thankful to be working” it makes chills go up my spine because it shows that as long as your trying that’s all that matters!
As a father of three sons and a broke man who can barely pay his bills working as a mechanic and a us marine veteran I feel this song deep in my bones it is my daily life
Keep going Marine, it gets better. Grumpy old Army Combat Engineer on this end. Me and my wife have raised 3 sons An Army Intel Analyst, a Welder and our youngest is a Marine Intel Analyst. We're proud of all of them
I've spent most my life barely paying bills and sometime just not paying them at all is how I got by. I feel your pain. Struggle is sometimes the only thing I feel that helps me get by. Just keep trying brother. Thank you for what you've done for us as a country! With tears in my eyes! You're something to be proud of Truckin
Here in my listening to this while my wife takes care of the baby and our 2 year old girl runs in and out of my office. This song kept me going back when I was 18 working a grunt construction job for $8/hr in Texas. Always dreamed one day it’d pay off and I’d have what I have now. Self funded trading account that more than pays the bills, a wife who is awesome, and two adorable kids. Wish I could go back, hug that desperate 18 year old, and thank him for the insane sacrifices he made so I could end up where I am now. In a way it feels like this song does that.
As a daughter who saw first hand a dad who did everything for his children. I wanted nothing more than to see my dad happy, he deserves more than this world can offer him. 50 yrs and finally he made his forever home. Tears of sadness seeing him tired, stressed all those years are replaced with tears of joy, love and gratefulness because through all those hard times he was a father who no matter what WAS PRESENT, WAS THERE and now I'm so thankful to say he is finally getting what he deserves. I Love you dad, Si Dios Quere
This is such an underrated song. Every son knows what it’s like to want to make your dad proud. Especially coming from a family with a successful father and a not so successful son. My dad never gave me his money but just his wisdom and always told me stuff like this. Fantastic line “you don’t need to make the millions, just be thankful to be working.”
I grew up on this age of county music. I’m not a fan of county but MG makes me cry every time. I never really had a dad, but my mom instilled the mindset of pride and work in me. My fiancé and I will be getting married next month and I cannot think of a better band or song to include. Thank you for being in my life.
I ignored my own needs in life and helped my late elderly Mother fight cancer for the last 10 years of her life. I said that I'd not comment unless it's an emergency and Mom's memory is the most important emergency because I love her and miss her. She's the only kindness that I've seen in this world in the past 30 years. I am my Mother's son. Daniel.
My dad was an airman during the nam years, I see those DRESS BLUES and the F-15 fly over and I can’t help but shed tears. Miss ya POP, RIP MR Gentry thank you for your great music and workmanship.
I know the feeling I had a great grampa in ww1 he was in the army , grampa in ww2 he was on a bomber crew in the air force and my other grampa in Korea he was an officer on a carrier in the navy
“ dad I wonder if I ever let you down” sinks in deep every time, lost my dad at 15, we listened to this song constantly, I’m now 23, just had a beautiful baby girl, run/own my own business, just trying to make you proud 🙏
I remember singing this as a kid with my dad. We'd be driving anywhere, windows rolled down, singing at the top of our lungs. I didn't know back then how powerful the words to this song was, but now, at 28 and married, I get a lump in my throat listening to this.
Im crying, My dad is that kind of dad. Even though I'm young, i do things that most people my age can do. I help take care of my brothers, stay up till 10:00 to get my Hw done, make lunches, help with breakfast and dinner, try to keep up on my jobs, ride horses, work with my friends raising money for causes, and managing to go out to work with horses every sat. just because i love to. My dad gets all choked up with me when he talks about it. My dads grandfather past away before i was born in the military, rest in peace.
One of the many reasons I love MG! I actually asked my Dad this question a few years before this great song was released. He said something very similar: “You will always be my son and I will always love and be proud of you.” For your father, who was a great man, to affirm your life in that fashion, is the best gift in life!
This song reminds me of my dad who passed. "Dad I wonder if I ever let you down, if you're ashamed of how I turned out." It really sticks with me, but I know he'd be happy with everything I've done.
Same thats why I love this song too. God bless, always keep your head up and cherish the great times you’ve shared while he was around. Work hard and make sure he is proud thats what I try to do everyday
Don't feel like "The Lone Ranger". Most people feel like that. I'm only just now starting to feel like he IS proud of me & he's been gone 31 years this year. I bet your dad could not even fathom why you would think that he is not proud of you. GOD bless you & yours ... always !!!
My dad wasn't very nice to me and my siblings growing up, he was raised old school, but before he passed he said Bobby I'm proud of you, you've become a great mechanic in our trade. Been 12 years yesterday I lost him, i sure miss him.
If I can offer you anything at my age (34) - start saving as much you can for retirement now. I was only focused on the brand new shiny, impress girls and friends, and now I'm twice your age and trying to catch up for a somewhat lost 17 years (or at least 10) where I could've been shoveling money into 401(k)s and stuff. Trying to catch up when you missed all that is pretty expensive. You don't have to be eating out of a bean can every night because you're saving too much, but save as much as you can now. You will thank yourself in another 17 years, I promise.
The second verse, where he talks about rebuilding your life from the bottom up, and then settling down right as your getting back on your feet, brings tears to my eyes. My grandpa served during Korea, had to rebuild his life from the bottom after getting out of the Marines. I miss my grandpa. I love this song, it makes me think of him.
My heart is with Troy Gentry' family, friends and fans during this time of mourning his death today. May You Rest in Peace, In Jesus Name I Pray AMEN !!!
True story: I had never heard of Montgomery Gentry until I bought tickets to go see Toby Keith in concert in Austin Texas. Montgomery Gentry opened for Toby Keith. As they starting playing and singing I said "Hey I know that song! I like it 😊! They played their second song and I recognized it from the radio also. I said" Ohhh man I really like this song 😯!! As they played their music I recognized their songs! I just didn't know who sang them. After seeing that concert I became HUGE Montgomery Gentry fans. I bought their greatest hits CD and learned their songs word for word. I went to three concerts of theirs after that and seeing the enjoyment on the audience faces were priceless. The first concert seeing Toby Kieth perform after Montgomery Gentry made one hell of a concert!! One I will never forget. I hated when Troy Gentry died in the plane crash. I really wanted to see more concerts of theirs.
I just recently in the last few days have made the decision to recover from severe alcohol addiction due to a health scare. This song makes me so proud of myself and never again will I drink alcohol. Stay strong y'all, I know many people have been through the same thing.
Because that IS something for anyone to be proud of. 😊 Knowing that you are giving your life all that you can to succeed and refuse to be beaten or defeated by life's circumstances is what we, the older generation called PRIDE.
One of my favorite songs whether it,s living another day Having hope in dark times Graduating high school or college Fighting for your country Marrying a beautiful woman Bringing a life into this world Doing the best you can for your family Or retiring Thats something to be proud of I,m gonna play this song on my high school graduation day I know that much and many more
I’m not saying this just because he’s gone, but Troy really seemed to be an awesome person. Both of them seem to be great guys and full of energy and happiness. Great song
I grew up listening to Montgomery Gentry when I started listening to country music as a kid. I was devastated when I heard about Troy Gentry’s passing. He will never be forgotten. RIP Troy.
It's hard being the person you know you should be. Bruises, stitches, broken bones with no thanks. Long hours that end with favors for others until it's dark and your hungry with barley enough time to rest. But you know everytime my wife hugs me like she hasn't seen me in years it's all worth it, and still to this day when my father tells me he's proud it really hits me deep.
I always took my granddaddy’s stories for granted. I recently got out of the army and I miss sitting in front of his lazy chair. He was the first pilot to lead females to dog fight the old school way for on single engine fighters. Colonel Ingrum was his name. He escorted the first soviet bombers to Alaska. Man the stories I heard. The struggles of my great grandmother went through while he was gone. Stories of the dust bowl. How I miss them so much.
Yea the line about missed by a hair reminds me of the stories my grandpa would tell me about him and his brother in WW2. Talking about his brother was the only time I’ve seen him cry. He was sniped in the back by the German French boarder in WW2.

This song reminds my dad of his dad he was a WW2 air force veteran who delivered oil and raised 6 kids. He was loyal to my gramma and accoarding to dad was a wise and calm man.
This song makes me think about what it means to be a parent, what it means to work hard, and how definitions of true success change as one matures. I especially love the lines, "You don't need to make a million - Just be thankful to be workin'. If you're doing what you're able, and putting food there on the table, and providing for the family that you love, that's something to be proud of."
You will be missed Troy! I know that you are up there with God looking down upon us. I pray for your family whom are grieving their loss of such a wonderful man. Troy was the epitome of a father and husband. Please pray for the Gentry family as they endure this tragedy. God Bless.
+21shroom here in New Jersey we have Thunder 106 they play mostly the best out there, none of that FGL trash... or even luke bryan that much, still wish they'd play more clint black and george strait ect
+me2456 no kidding... But unfortunately people don't like this stuff anymore. It has to either be punk rock or rap.. It's really sad cuz this stuff is going to strike a nerve in a good way, not make you want to cut yourself or cheat on the person you are dating/married to
I was an 18 year old father in 1984. I raised two wonderful children and now have 3 grandchildren. (Hoping for more) in 2004, I had a major setback in my career. This song helped get me through that period. God bless MG and RIP TROY!!!!
You know, everytime I feel as if I'm not good enough as a father, husband or man in general, this song always seems to pop up. And with a tear in my eye, in reassures me that I am doing alright and no matter what I should be proud of what I've done and have become. Because I'm making an honest living and making ends meet for my family.
The enemy will tell you that you are not good enough because he knows that if he is successful, he will break up the family and reduce your ability to raise your kids up in the way they should go.
RIP Troy Gentry! I saw that Eddie is touring again. I would definitely love to go to his show and support his return to the stage. I know he and Troy were really close and he has struggled keeping his promise to keep the music going. Good luck on your return Eddie Montgomery! Your fans will support you!!!
@murraychadwick9362 💯💯💯!!! I think he did start touring again this year. I can't confirm it but I was looking at one of those concert tickets sit (might have been ticket master) and I thought I saw him on the list.
This song reminds me of my uncle he was in the military and he almost died there and we are all thankful for everyone that served our country and the ones that are in service right now 🇺🇸
I have never done anything special with my life. My dad was killed when i was ten. I raised 3 girls and barely put food on the table. I always tear up when i hear this song. Great song guys.
Troy RIP brother. Was a pleasure and a blessing to see you perform (3 weeks before the accident) and your band's excitement and enthusiasm is why I love country music. Thank you and take care watching out from above! May Montgomery Gentry be forever in my playlist.
I’m working in places that I never really planed to work at. I don’t get a father that tells me I’m doing something to be proud of. I’m encouraged by this song, understanding my drive that never stops to keep on working. It’s the best I can do.
These songs still have such a deep meaning to me every time I hear them I can't help but tear up a bit. Especially the part when he says, "And if all you ever really do is the best you can. Well, you did it man"
Great song with a great message, don’t look at what your life is lacking or how you don’t measure up but at what you’ve got in life that’s something to be proud of and thankful for.

I dedicated this song to my boy that was college bound but ended up engaged with a baby on the way instead after graduating high school and working hard. Worked since he was 14 and became manager at 19. His boss wants to make him a partner in the restaurant he works at by the time he's 25. Takes care of his fiance, baby, has enough to get by and go on trips, but not rich by any means and still thinks of his mother, going out of his way to surprise me with things. Doing "what he's able" and I couldn't be more proud of this boy. He's such a good father, son, and future husband to his fiance and high school sweetheart. They're old souls and the cutest thing ever, like an old couple in 20 year old bodies. This song choked me up a few times at the college part cause I wanted him to go to college but that was my dream, not his.❤️
I know no one cares, but the part where he says "you don't have to make a million just be thankful to be workin" really strikes me. I'm a 19 yr old high school graduate, and I make $7.25 an hour at work. I work my butt off and have lost friends since I've started working, but if I didn't have this job, I wouldn't be able to put myself through nursing school... I'm proud of my job no matter how irritating it gets...
+Mariah M.... I am a father of nine kiddos ranging from 3 years old all the way up to 20. I too work my butt off. All though we don't have a ton of money at the end of the month after bills are paid, we do have what we need and some of what the kids "want"! i put a 6 bedroom roof over their heads, food in their bellies, clothes on their backs, and shoes on their feet! It doesn't matter how much money we have as long as they are taken care of. Don't worry, it pays off in the end to see the smiles on the faces of the ones you love!
I agree with rob I'm only a few years older but I had to drop out due to missing so much school and being in and out of the hospital and I had to work hard get a ged better than nothing I guess but I have 2 kids and a wife now so I work my butt off too and had to work hard and fight threw the crap for a few years but now I'm a boss at a company manufacturing tesla car parts it will pay off
that's my favorite line in this song, I'm only 21 but since I was 16 about i dreamed of having a nice car and big house and bunch of money, but I like the rest of that verse as well with "if you're doing what your able, putting food there on the table, and providing for the family that you love, that's something to be proud of" after actually learning words to this song it kind of changed way I think about money I guess
Like so many others this song reminds me of my dad. He truly was part of the greatest generation. He raised me up right and I raised mine the same way.❤. God I miss him and all those folks.
This song gets me every time. I don't let one roll, but I can feel my eyes watering up. Idk what it is.. but something Bout being a man and hearing your dad is proud of you gets to me. Im 21 and have a Beautiful wife. I married at 20 . 1 year at the end of this month . I don't have kids but picturing " a newborn baby crying in the arms of the woman I love " knowing that when we want we can have that happen. Im no millionaire, or not even from a wealthy family. Hadnt finished college like my mom wanted yet. But my parents raised me right. I picture my life when I hear this song
I couldn't stop myself from crying. This song came out right after I found out I was pregnant, and My Dad had just passed as well. It was like he was telling me I was doing ok.
I listened to this song many years ago when I was first getting sober. It's funny because I'm not from a rural area or military or anything that they talk about, but the sentiment of the chorus and the belief of doing your best in the moment really helped me.
R.I.P Troy Gentry 1967-2017 you had a life to be proud of and hang your hat on R.I.P a true legend

Mine too RIP Troy!!!!
Sending prayers from my family to his family 💔
Amen
The second verse, where he talks about rebuilding your life from the bottom up, and then settling down right as your getting back on your feet, brings tears to my eyes. My grandpa served during Korea, had to rebuild his life from the bottom after getting out of the Marines.
I miss my grandpa. I love this song, it makes me think of him.
My heart is with Troy Gentry' family, friends and fans during this time of mourning his death today. May You Rest in Peace, In Jesus Name I Pray AMEN !!!
Amen
My cousin killed himself because of PTSD after he got back...
I miss him.
May we never forget brother/or sister

"You don't need to make a million, just be thankful to be working"
You will be surely missed, Troy! RIP.
I’m a recovering opiate addict. I have been drinking everyday since last year. You’re comment has giving me hope
Gentry..RIP Brother. BLESSINGS To His Family and Fellow Singer Partner Montgomery.
My names Anna Adrianna Helene Evans nice sweet kind woman im.just trying make friends I live
The part that he says if all you ever really do is the best that you can then you did it man give me chills to this day every time I hear it
Because that IS something for anyone to be proud of. 😊 Knowing that you are giving your life all that you can to succeed and refuse to be beaten or defeated by life's circumstances is what we, the older generation called PRIDE.

One of my favorite songs whether it,s living another day
Having hope in dark times
Graduating high school or college
Fighting for your country
Marrying a beautiful woman
Bringing a life into this world
Doing the best you can for your family
Or retiring
Thats something to be proud of
I,m gonna play this song on my high school graduation day I know that much and many more
I’m not saying this just because he’s gone, but Troy really seemed to be an awesome person. Both of them seem to be great guys and full of energy and happiness. Great song

Making all of these beautiful songs. Now, that’s something to be proud of.
Rest in peace, Troy ❤
Thank you for sharing your talents with the world!
13 years later & I still come back to this song every once in a while for a mental pick me up. Beautiful song 🙏
I read about your grandpa in a history book
Yea the line about missed by a hair reminds me of the stories my grandpa would tell me about him and his brother in WW2. Talking about his brother was the only time I’ve seen him cry. He was sniped in the back by the German French boarder in WW2.
I'm a long way from home. I miss my family so much. This song reminds me of my old man. Love it!
I’ve been on an old country music binge lately and I have been obsessed with this song. Listen to it at least once a day. So good
They were awesome in person...may T. Roy RIP
@@bobbywhetzal4312 Yes! I have never been choked up about the death of a celebrity, but the day that T-Roy died, my eyes were misty with tears because of how profoundly their music touched me. God bless Eddie and Troy!

Wait…old?
To our Military and our Veterans thank you for your service 💪🎖️🪖
thank you for your kindness 😊
This song tears me up every time.
Hello how are you doing it's nice to meet you here
Not only am i a vet from O.I.F. but O.E.F. too. And im trying my best to support my family. This song helps raise my spirits when i feel down.
You will be missed Troy! I know that you are up there with God looking down upon us. I pray for your family whom are grieving their loss of such a wonderful man. Troy was the epitome of a father and husband.
Please pray for the Gentry family as they endure this tragedy. God Bless.
If you miss Montgomery Gentry Give me a HELL YEAH. RIP Troy Gentry
HELL YEAH!!!!!!
HELL YEAH!!!
HELL YEAH
HELL YEAH,MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HELL YEAH
Why isn't stuff like this whats new on the radio? Songs like this are so much better than anything new coming out on the radio any more.
Amen.
Country music used to be about life, now it's about whatever will sell for a month or two.
I agree
+21shroom here in New Jersey we have Thunder 106 they play mostly the best out there, none of that FGL trash... or even luke bryan that much, still wish they'd play more clint black and george strait ect
+me2456 no kidding... But unfortunately people don't like this stuff anymore. It has to either be punk rock or rap.. It's really sad cuz this stuff is going to strike a nerve in a good way, not make you want to cut yourself or cheat on the person you are dating/married to
I see alot of dads posting. This reminds me of my father and my grandfather. This is the kind of encouragement they would give me.
Rest in Peace Troy Gentry, prayers for your family & friends. Let your greatest hits live on!❤️
I was an 18 year old father in 1984. I raised two wonderful children and now have 3 grandchildren. (Hoping for more) in 2004, I had a major setback in my career. This song helped get me through that period. God bless MG and RIP TROY!!!!
This song makes you think of the things you're grateful for.
Rest in peace Troy Gentry: 1967 - 2017
Man this song still gets me every time I watched it
I'll always love this song
RIP Troy Gentry! I saw that Eddie is touring again. I would definitely love to go to his show and support his return to the stage. I know he and Troy were really close and he has struggled keeping his promise to keep the music going. Good luck on your return Eddie Montgomery! Your fans will support you!!!
I agree. We need Eddie back on stage performing the songs we all grew to love. It's what T-Roy would have wanted.
@murraychadwick9362 💯💯💯!!! I think he did start touring again this year. I can't confirm it but I was looking at one of those concert tickets sit (might have been ticket master) and I thought I saw him on the list.
This song reminds me of my uncle he was in the military and he almost died there and we are all thankful for everyone that served our country and the ones that are in service right now 🇺🇸
Yep, Military, Police and Fire, keeping us all safe and serving for us!
Anybody notice how much has changed since this song was released?
THANK YOU GOD FOR THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PLACE ON EARTH AND ALL MY FAMILY TO FILL IT WITH. AMEN
Whew that was a hell of a ride. Thank you God for grace.
Teary eyed coming back to the songs I listened to as a kid with my parents driving around lmao
R.I.P. T-Roy. One of the greatest voices Country Music Ever. 🙏🏼✝️
Man, what a song, even now, when this band is sadly no more, It is still strikingly good and relatable, way to go guys
I have never done anything special with my life. My dad was killed when i was ten. I raised 3 girls and barely put food on the table. I always tear up when i hear this song. Great song guys.
Nothing wrong with a simple life!!!
I miss turning the radio on and hearing these kind of songs!!
Troy RIP brother. Was a pleasure and a blessing to see you perform (3 weeks before the accident) and your band's excitement and enthusiasm is why I love country music. Thank you and take care watching out from above! May Montgomery Gentry be forever in my playlist.
😢😢😢
Miss this song. I haven't heard it in forever. I believe that everyone should be thankful for what they have and proud of their accomplishments.
Well, you did it man"
It's the "Dad I wonder if I ever let you down if your ashamed how I turned out" part for me.
Great song with a great message, don’t look at what your life is lacking or how you don’t measure up but at what you’ve got in life that’s something to be proud of and thankful for.
Serving my community as a volunteer firefighter, that's something to be proud of 👍🏻
Sam Battaglia am men to that thank u for risking ur life for us
I dedicated this song to my boy that was college bound but ended up engaged with a baby on the way instead after graduating high school and working hard. This song choked me up a few times at the college part cause I wanted him to go to college but that was my dream, not his.❤️
RIP Troy Gentry 😢God bless you and have a wonderful time in heaven ✝️❤️
+Mariah M It pays off. I promise
I agree with rob I'm only a few years older but I had to drop out due to missing so much school and being in and out of the hospital and I had to work hard get a ged better than nothing I guess but I have 2 kids and a wife now so I work my butt off too and had to work hard and fight threw the crap for a few years but now I'm a boss at a company manufacturing tesla car parts it will pay off
Do what gets you closer to your goals. . . friends lost will be replaced with people who hold your same values. Chin up, chest out ;)
that's my favorite line in this song, I'm only 21 but since I was 16 about i dreamed of having a nice car and big house and bunch of money, but I like the rest of that verse as well with "if you're doing what your able, putting food there on the table, and providing for the family that you love, that's something to be proud of" after actually learning words to this song it kind of changed way I think about money I guess
The main chorus always pumps me up. Still one of the top country concerts I've ever been too.
As a vet and a man who has many regrets im life thos song hits home with me and mean alot to me. Thanl you for thos amazing story and life leason.
This song has aged so well and become even more true these days.
I Remember using this video to teach my students about being proud of what you've done and are doing no matter what the world tells us we gotta be.
I'm a first generation firefighter in my family that's something to be proud of.
Like so many others this song reminds me of my dad. He truly was part of the greatest generation. He raised me up right and I raised mine the same way.❤. God I miss him and all those folks.
I love the kick into the chorus; great vocal harmonies and singing. Well done Montgomery Gentry.
Still getting chills from this song in 2024-
Thank you for this song and for these musicians. God bless them and all listeners
Hey bro, did you know your wife is cheating on you?
this song bring backs so many good memories to me :(
I couldn't stop myself from crying. This song came out right after I found out I was pregnant, and My Dad had just passed as well. It was like he was telling me I was doing ok.
Thay sing good
itsGreeny same
RIP TROY GENTRY. YOUR FANS WILL MISS!!
My grandfather raised me to be a great man and I'm damn proud of that R.I.P pappy cant wait to see u again
For real man😩
I listened to this song many years ago when I was first getting sober. It's funny because I'm not from a rural area or military or anything that they talk about, but the sentiment of the chorus and the belief of doing your best in the moment really helped me.
