I have been skiing at Northstar since I was born. I find this video VERY accurate. I think something that you forgot to mention are the lines. Everyone from the Bay Area drives to Tahoe, and I remember lines being up to 40 minutes for 1 run. Northstar also has 2 "runs" that rarely open; sawtooth ridge, and snow rabbit. Sawtooth is definitely a fun run, as barely any people ever go (it also on usually opens on pow days) and there are a lot of trees. Snow rabbit is a tiny bowl, and it opens more than sawtooth ridge, around 3-4 times a year. (I don't know exactly because if it is a powder day, Kirkwood squaw, or heavenly are you best bets for good riding) and sawtooth ridge opens a maximum times of once per year I think. I have only seen it open once when I have gone to the resort. I am SO hyped for you to make one on Kirkwood and Heavenly, as I grew up skiing those too. PLEASE include if the resort is usually busy, or if there are long lines.
Update: Skied it a bunch last year. It's like being on a different mountain. Maybe a little bit like certain parts of Heavenly. Definitely one of the better areas on the mountain if you can get it on a pow day.
You are uniquely qualified to review all of these ski resorts having been to so many and having all this footage! Love the scores, perfect to quantify the experience a little. Please continue with this and become the #1 name in reviewing ski resorts in the US!
@@emcee2555 From my experience Steamboat is one of the better ones, but it's out of the way from the typical I70 corridor. Along I70 there is: Vail, Beaver Creek (highly recommend this one if you've got some money burning a hole in your pocket), Copper, Aspen, Breckenridge, Keystone, A-Basin, Winter Park, Loveland, and a few others. All of these are good resorts but they fill up quickly on the weekends from all the powderhounds in Denver and the front range. Telluride is another good one, and again it's off the beaten path so not as many people will be there. Airlines (Southwest and Jetblue) and starting service to airports that are within 30 minutes of Telluride and Steamboat from the East coast, Dallas, and Denver. I hope this helped a bit, if you have anymore questions feels free to shoot away!
Better off going to Sugarbowl. Cheaper and way more snow, epic chutes, cliffs and bowls. Squaw Alpine is the best resort in the area, but gets busy. Sugarbowl during the week (non-holidays) has a real local type vibe. Tahoe has 3 of snowiest resorts in the whole of the US: 7- Kirkwood 8 - Sugarbowl 9 - Squaw Alpine.
@@Kthomasritchie Thanks! I've got an epic pass so my main resorts I'd want to go to are Heavnly, Northstar, or Kirkwood. Funny story, my mom broke her knee at sugarbowl. To say she never wants to ski there again is an understatement! Thanks for the recommendations!
Northstar is where you go for parks. If you want steeps/gnarly you goto Kirkwood. If you want great tree runs with a sick view of the lake you goto Heavenly... this is of course if you are going to stick to the Vail resorts. I recommend checking Sierra At Tahoe out if you are in the area.
Sierra at Tahoe has some gnarly terrain, great prices, low crowds, is close to South Lake Tahoe, and has been ranked as some of the best tree skiing in the world. Head there!
Love the reviews so far! Should throw a highlight reel at the end highlighting runs/terrain or a link to a previous video at the resort. Give a general idea of the resort. Just some raw footage of snowboarding! Who doesn't love to watch some shredding.

That view you weren't sure about is Martis Valley and out towards bocca resevoir. Only a couple little place at N* where you can see the lake and it's more of a peek-a-boo view
Flatstar lol but I love Tahoe!! Used to ride/work at homewood, Would like a video review of that if they are still open. Thanks for the review super useful!!
I basically learned to ride there. Definitely family friendly and the village run is super flat. The backside on those super icy mornings were dicey. I haven't really had much time in Mt Pluto or in that Sawtooth area.
Aww my old workplace, you even got a shot of Ole John scanning you in. Too bad new management has ruined the experience for me working there. Gonna miss the food at Los Arcos as well.
Looking back, do you think North Star is really only 15 points better than big snow? Those resorts seem like they are night and day. Good video as always
They are definitely different but think about how special big snow is! It is the only snow dome on this side of the world! that played a part in the score.
Thanks for the detailed video! Can you do a “Terrain parks comparison in Tahoe? “ It will be great if you could include how is the lift access/ typical lift wait times to the park lifts. Cheers!
One of guys I deployed to Afghanistan with while I was in the NV national guard, was at the time the Director of Mtn Ops at Northstar, I need to get a hold of him and see where he’s at now!
I love Northstar, always will, but it’s was way better before Vail. They had a joint Pass with Northstar, Sierra at Tahoe, and Kirkwood. Those were the days.
Mate - we have followed you on youtube for a while now. BUT we are lanning a trip to the USA (in AUstralia) and we are finding your maps/vblogs etc awesome. Thanks so much for doing this... legend mate - would love to see you in OZ reviewing our slopes. One question. Transport from Truckee to Northstar? Super detailed insight but I have one criticism with the rating system: If you're gonna rave about how amazing something is, such as the chairlifts, and then give them an 8, it would be helpful to know what you think they're missing in order to not get a perfect score. It kinda sounded like they have a million chairlifts with so many options that sometimes they don't even need to run all of them, so what could they possibly do better to get that 10? Talking about how amazing something is and then giving it a lower than perfect score makes the overall rating system seem like arbitrary numbers.
Also, at the end of the review you should pull up a table with all the different resorts, or make a google spreadsheet with all the different resorts so that we can compare them, kinda dougdemuro dougscore style.
I've been going to Northstar most of my life. I agree with everything you said, except one thing I would add is that there are plenty of places to go fast. I got an IKON pass last year and spent most of the time at Squaw, and among many other things, that is something I notices is that there really isn't much terrain there where you can just haul ass.
Ooh my home resort! My beautiful beloved Northstar. I am super biased but I’ll say one thing, Colorado and Utah has better snow - it’s dryer and there’s more of it. Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows is really close to Northstar, but they generally get more snow. Sugar bowl is also a very cool resort in North Lake, and it’s really “cheap”. Boreal is a tiny little mountain, but it’s pretty fun too, and they have Woodward there so it attracts all the really sick grimy boarders. I just love Tahoe so much, especially North Lake because I’m from Sacramento and the drive is much less treacherous.
I’m from Sacramento as well! It’s true that Colorado and Utah probably have better snow, but don’t you remember the last few seasons we had in NorCal? Squaw Valley was open until July and Mammoth was open until August.
Sadly Mt. Rose Ski Resort raised their prices, so I'm getting the epic pass this year instead. These videos are getting me hyped for next season. p.s. I would love to see you review the Mt. Rose chutes next season! It might be hard because we hardly have enough powder to keep them open, but some of my best runs ever have been in the Chutes!
If you have never check out new Mexico ridding, some check out Taos and Ski Santa Fe, They have some incredible steep terrain and Santa Fe's trees runs and views are world-class imo!!!
Pleasseeeee do a review on diamond peak, it’s a smaller resort but it’s got the best snow in the best place and the best prices with the best view in Lake Tahoe! That’s a bold statement, I know, but trust me you will agree if you go there!
