Add a 45 degree joint on to the end of your feed pipe and then add some larger river rock for the water to fall upon to prevent erosion. On e your water level is above the pipe, you're golden! Can't wait to see it filled up! Great project!
Definitely agree with this comment. This is how we keep our watering pivots from sinking deep into the ground from erosion. We set big lava rock for it to walk on. Helps prevent more erosion and gives the pivot something solid to be on.

My uncle , my cousin & I did this very thing back in 2009 with 60 acres on my uncles land . I’m from the Mid West . The first thing my uncle did was find a natural spring then had it capped & redirected a creek so it would flow into the lake & back out again . Turn the well inlet into an aerator? That way it doesn't drill through the clay liner and enhances the pond health (meaning better bass!) I would drain and build the dock right the first time with piers and avoid the floating dock. My last suggestion would be getting some 3 or 4 inch plastic pipe and criss cross it inside the willow cage and zip tie it to the cage. That way when the willows rot in 2 or 3 years, the pipe will still be a great fish attractor.
I agree with building the dock the right way now, even if you have to let some water out and delay the fill. It's just going to be more troublesome to go back and do it over later with plants and fish in the pond. Put some rip-rap stones at the fill pipe to hold it in place, break up the flow and limit the erosion. Once there is water over it you won't be able to see what it's doing. Hate for it to blow a hole through the liner. You could also drill small holes along the submerged length to reduce the force of flow, like a drip hose.
@@thoriated A floating dock would be even better. Wood/metal pilings rot and rust, not to mention that you have to put posts in, possibly damaging the liner. Floating docks last far longer and there's no risk of damaging anything.

I hope you open the drain up and let the water drain to the point of being able to build the type of dock that you want to have. There will be many years of enjoying the dock you want instead of enduring the dock you don't want. You spent the money on the well, and you did the manual labor of putting in the 2" fill pipe, you know that you can fill the pond manually if in fact you don't get the typical rain you talk about in every video. It would suck to have to drain it and start over, but being able to build your dock exactly how you want it and being able to have the peace of mind with knowing your clay liner has no weaknesses is extremely valuable in the long run and seems like the best option.

I'm moving to NC and in time I plan to buy a 40 acre plot of farm land to eventually build a "Ohio" round barn that can seat 500 people for events comfortably for receptions and events while doubling as a restaurant during the week. This is something I would like to do with a large island with an outdoor gazebo for outdoor ceremonies while I also have bonfire pits. The overall plan is to eventually have the pond filled with Koi fish and lotus flowers. I just love this!
Rake a little bit of topsoil on the island. Clay has no nutrients, and also suffocates root growth from lack of pockets for air. Roots like oxygen as well. If you put a bit of topsoil, the grass will take faster.
@@haydennicoson3128 and it also acts as a nutrient barrier. Yes, it will absorb fertilizer. But it will trap it at the surface, and not let the roots get any.
I think you need to dump a load of gravel where the well comes into the pond to help limit the erosion. You might also/instead put 30 degree bend pointing upward, once there's a few feet of water. That way, the steam will be disrupted by the existing water, rather than having a heavy stream of water running parallel to your clay liner.
This pond will be amazing once it’s finished! Are there any plans to add aquatic plants to the pond? Something like Lotuses, Lily pads, Cattails and/or Wild Rice? Maybe a few Tupelo or Willow trees? Please, please don’t use Bermudagrass. Little Bluestem and Buffalograss are both great natives for erosion control.

When you get the pond built and stocked with fish, you should make a glass bottom boat and make a video of you driving in the pond and seeing all the little projects like the tree
My family just found a good spot with clay, dug a hole, and hoped for the best. This is a lot of work for some awesome results! They also have a floating dock and it works great.
Wish I saw this sooner to suggest adding a sealed time capsule at the bottom/buried! Would have been cool for future generations to discover one day years away. I feel like I’ve been missing out on your channel for so long, but glad I found it now, I’m subbed 👏
bama! I live waterfront on a lake and started with a wooden dock, sledge hammering poles into the lakebed, and eventually upgraded to aluminum. my aluminum dock has plates on the bottom of the supports that just sit nicely on the lake floor, and I can tie boats up to it just fine. For your purposes a floating dock would work just fine. No reason to risk the integrity of your clay layer.
Have you thought about making a trout pond? It may be a lil too warm in bama, but you take good enough care of your ponds-I think it could turn out awesome!
Yep they stock em in some of the rivers and lakes here in Texas in the winter but they have to do it every year because I don’t think too many last thru the summer.
I"m a colorado boy and can tell you that 80 degree plus days put a lot of stress on trout. even our game and fish department recommends not to target trout if the temperatures are too warm. they say to keep the trout and not release them because they probably won't live. I like the idea of small mouths. keep in mind they need rocky bottoms to do well.
Plant a willow tree to help with the erosion around that shallow end. They are beautiful and have great roots for erosion control. Love the series man!
Willow root system might compromise the clay liner. Can get 100 ft or better from the tree. I’ve seen them crack foundation walls. Be careful with trees planted next to your pond.
Awesome. Yeah I was one of those ppl wondering why it was so shallow... I imagined it drying up during a drought or if a tractor hit that line. But 12' is deeper than it looked. I hope you get a time lapse of it filling! So satisfying!
This is insane. How you are able to do this is beyond me, but this is like something you’d have in a dream. Your very own pond, with YOUR fish, and you decide who gets to fish there. No Karen’s telling you not to fish. This is so freaking cool
Huge fan from Wisconsin and have absolutely loved this series. Definitely a goal of ours to build a pond someday and stock it with fish we breed. Stay safe and can’t wait to see the final result!
That well outlet would make a neat aerator feature in the pond if you turned a 90 straight up at the end of it. That would take care of your erosion problem too.
@@smithrx97 great observation. natural springs and wells have very little oxygen. BamaBass will have to add at least a bubbler to move the desolved oxygen off the surface to the lower water water plane.
Also, to keep from getting runoff channels in the clay when you fill with the pump, run a fire hose from the 2" pipe to the standing water at the deep end. Fill from above the surface so that the flow doesn't disturb the clay bottom. As the pond fills you can just pull the hose back up.
I’d just use this rain to your advantage on filling the pond up most the way, I’d go ahead and test out your drain though to at least make sure there’s no problems with it but if anything wait till winter or fall and drain it down enough to put a dock in. Make sure there’s no leaks in the dam before putting more work into it:
It honestly made my day when I saw all the wildlife that was going to the pond!!! Great job!!!! Happy someone is building stuff for wildlife rather then people. Too much development now these days:(
This is fascinating. From a fishing standpoint, building and filling your own pond you will know the topography (might now be the right word 🤷) of that pond like the back of your hand. All the shelves, the dropoffs, the structure etc. It'll make it super fun for catching fish. Nothing like fishing a pond you're very familiar with
I'd drain the pond and then build the dock so you reach your 100% completion vs a floating dock. Otherwise it will bug you. You can always fill it back up with the well if nature is taking too long.
Man I just want to say I really truly enjoy your pond building episodes. I honestly look forward to the next episode. It’s like watching your favorite series and waiting to see the next episode I love what you’re doing. please, keep it going bro
Something to keep in mind regarding your well water is that it typically is not oxygenated at all and can create some problems with your dissolved oxygen levels effectively creating a potential dead zone in your pond. You may want to consider creating a creek bed for the last 50' or so before the water reaches the pond, giving it time to tumble over rocks and aerate to the point that it's healthy with oxygen by the time it hits your pond. Plus, that could be a really nice feature to add to the overall environment you are creating with this project.
that's a great recommendation and how did he aerate the pond?? I remember him driving around on a boat doing tests but he never showed us how he oxygenated it. Glad I came across this comment. I know it's a old one but I do still go back and rewatch some of these while I wait for the new ones to come out. 👍🏽Great recommendation once more 😎
@@PurpleDrac thanks for the comment. I think he ended up routing the pipe or hose so the water shot out of it. That was a minimal way of oxygenating the water but it was a statt. Wind causing waves, even small ones, is also a great source of adding oxygen and with a pond that size, there is certainly a lot of surface area to be affected by wind.
Just want to say that this project has been amazing and entertaining for sure! The added deer videos just make it that much better. I like what you are doing and enjoy the videos. Would love to visit this paradise one day! Keep up the good work!
Very interesting project - hydrology very intriguing and erosion of the 2 foot clay layer definitely something to be wary of. The waterfalls could get scoured out if the pond level is low and a hurricane hits - static water is not erosive, but you don't want your dam wall getting busted either. Your outlet pipe looks to be a foot or so diameter at the top, but the outlet pipe going through the dam wall is much narrower diameter? I watched all your phases of this project and found it really interesting and looking forward to seeing how it develops!
I would definitely say let it fill up now and go with a floating dock. There is some advantages with going floating like it being able to adapt to the water level throughout the season as well as being able to pull it out to service it if needed.
UA-cam has been force feeding me this video for days now. Its no wonder why this video is on trending, its cuz UA-cam pushes it on peoples' recommended. If YT likes you, you will be famous overnight, literally. Also, YT wants people to watch mindless videos & not any truth or anti-narrative information. Its all a total fraud, that is UA-cam. If trending was truely organic, only 1or2 of those videos wld be on trending. Trending is a category meaning, "we promoted these videos".
Put in a floating dock with legs that have mud pads on them so when it's completely full you'll float. When the water table drops a bit it will rest on the legs with the mud pads and not punch thru the clay.
This is very interesting. I hope one day I can have a little piece of my own land where I can do some interesting projects like this one! And if that doesn't happen at least I can watch it here on UA-cam. Thanks!
Curious to see what it will look like after all the outer bands of Ida come through. We are getting the last band now in Baldwin County and it’s a doozy.
I know you planned on putting a tracker on Clyde and Bonnie when you move them to the 5 acre pond. Have you thought of adding a tracker to Moby when you move him to the backyard pond? That way you'll know if he gets picked off like we are guessing happened to Sheriff. Would hate to see Moby get picked off by a blue heron.
I say floating dock is your best bet. P.S. another suggestion is get you a large pond aerator. It sits at the bottom of your pond and you just run a weighted air hose back to shore with an air pump. Helps to raise the oxygen level and works way better then a fountain.
awesome series! i have a feeling you are greatly under estimating the amount of water it is going to take to fill that thing, the well no prob but rainwater even from a hurricane? Looking forward to seeing it all play out!

This is the best channel out there love the series can’t wait to see the pond fully built!
this was such an exciting series. you should leave it full after the storm and install a floating dock.
Wish I saw this sooner to suggest adding a sealed time capsule at the bottom/buried! Would have been cool for future generations to discover one day years away. I feel like I’ve been missing out on your channel for so long, but glad I found it now, I’m subbed 👏
I would build a floating dock. Especially if you are in a area where your water levels will fluctuate often. Imo
Also there shouldn't be large wakes from boats that normally make a floating dock annoying.
I agree.
Even just walking on it will make it annoying. Stationary dock is the way to go.
@@JackknifeJimmy depends on design and how it's installed.
Personally I would just do a floating dock, mother nature is making the decision for you by sending Ida.
Daaaaannnngg!! What a project! I can just imagine this in a few years.
They wouldn't survive our Summer temps but I would love to have them or smallmouth.
Yep they stock em in some of the rivers and lakes here in Texas in the winter but they have to do it every year because I don’t think too many last thru the summer.
Would need some deep water or external cooling for trout to survive.
@@ChicagoTRS I bet that water from the well is super cold
I"m a colorado boy and can tell you that 80 degree plus days put a lot of stress on trout. even our game and fish department recommends not to target trout if the temperatures are too warm. they say to keep the trout and not release them because they probably won't live. I like the idea of small mouths. keep in mind they need rocky bottoms to do well.
Love all the structure...these fish have no idea how lucky they are!
Plant a willow tree to help with the erosion around that shallow end. They are beautiful and have great roots for erosion control. Love the series man!
And if it falls its good structure😂
Willow root system might compromise the clay liner. Can get 100 ft or better from the tree. I’ve seen them crack foundation walls. Be careful with trees planted next to your pond.
Floating dock seems more practical.
Especially during hurricane season.
And! They're less maintenance in comparison.
It's called capitalism. That's how he's able to do this.
@@footos8511 he paid to have it done. It's not like he works a real job either. You sound like someone so lazy by even saying that.
Huge fan from Wisconsin and have absolutely loved this series. Definitely a goal of ours to build a pond someday and stock it with fish we breed.
Stay safe and can’t wait to see the final result!
@bamabass you got us all anxious for an update video!! Excited to see it after all the rain!
This pond is my dream pond. Grats!
Do we all get a fishing invitation? 😂
I suddenly am so invested in this process and can’t wait to see it finished
Good timing digging it out and rigging up the pump right before the storms hit.
That well outlet would make a neat aerator feature in the pond if you turned a 90 straight up at the end of it. That would take care of your erosion problem too.
We were planning on building a waterfall into the pond but not at that location. Might have to re-route the pipe to go to the waterfall.
@@BamaBass that sounds awesome keep that pond turned over so there won't be a thermal cline
Also if you stock shad they will do so much better with moving water
@@smithrx97 having a waterfall were the runoff would end up in the deepest area could solve the problem no?
@@smithrx97 great observation. natural springs and wells have very little oxygen. BamaBass will have to add at least a bubbler to move the desolved oxygen off the surface to the lower water water plane.
Also, to keep from getting runoff channels in the clay when you fill with the pump, run a fire hose from the 2" pipe to the standing water at the deep end. Fill from above the surface so that the flow doesn't disturb the clay bottom. As the pond fills you can just pull the hose back up.
!
Mother nature helps you that's a very good sign!
I'm lovin this pond build! Such a cool experience to see!
Bama you should add some peacock bass in the pond. Also maybe some fresh water drum too
It honestly made my day when I saw all the wildlife that was going to the pond!!! Great job!!!! Happy someone is building stuff for wildlife rather then people. Too much development now these days:(
I'm excited for you guys. Jealous, but really excited. Dream build.
Imagine drilling for water but ending up with oil.
In eastern KY with that well water, the pond could have supported trout if it were properly designed. I've done it in Georgia.
When everything is totally settled you should dive in your pond and film the structures.
God works in beautiful ways. Great job. 👍
This is why many of these undesigned ponds eventually wash out. Few people think this far ahead.
I would definitely say let it fill up now and go with a floating dock. There is some advantages with going floating like it being able to adapt to the water level throughout the season as well as being able to pull it out to service it if needed.
Congrats on trending!!

Bro chill you good???
Austin! It's cool to see you watching this cool series! Keep up the great singing, my brother!
@@jaredkinneyjr and......?
Bonkers-scale project! Amazing
Thanks!
You can do it!!
That's awesome!! What a gift to hand down through the generations!!
Curious to see what it will look like after all the outer bands of Ida come through. We are getting the last band now in Baldwin County and it’s a doozy.
I live in Daphne, and we got some pretty heavy rain here for a good little while !!!
Would be sad to see for sure...but it'd be cool to see where that heron takes him!
Open season on blue herons?
That's nature. Moby deserves to be in the pond.
Floating dock!! We're ready for the stocking video!!! Great stuff!
I say floating dock is your best bet.
P.S. another suggestion is get you a large pond aerator. It sits at the bottom of your pond and you just run a weighted air hose back to shore with an air pump. Helps to raise the oxygen level and works way better then a fountain.
Proper aeration really helps! For an application this size I'd suggest something like a solarbee aerator/mixer.
awesome series! i have a feeling you are greatly under estimating the amount of water it is going to take to fill that thing, the well no prob but rainwater even from a hurricane? Looking forward to seeing it all play out!
After riding out Ida in New Orleans, we had to leave the city because of the lack of power, fuel, and food. We’re hanging out in Fairhope and checking out some of the Mobile area. I’m keeping an eye out for a beautiful new pond among the peanut fields! With all the trees that went down in the storm, you could do his and hers thrones for Bonnie and Clyde. Love the series, thanks for sharing.
