    You might consider planting sorghum sudangrass on the back side of the pond. No tap roots, just fine fibrous roots, and it'd grow tall enough to shade out any little trees that might be trying to establish.

    You need gizzard shad. Gizzard shad are the best forage for bass. Gizzards will reproduce enough to not have to be stocked again and they’ll get over 2 pounds. When a 4+ pound bass eats a 1-2 pound gizzard shad it’ll make them grow extremely fast.

      Imagine a stream with mud puppies! Or even hellbenders! I think that there's been talk of wanting to make another larger stream system, that could be perfect for their conservation.
      They were released into the wild as part of conservation programs for the first time in Kentucky in 2022, but have pretty much disappeared from Alabama. This could be the perfect place to help kickstart their return, since a managed, watched over stream where they could mature to larger sizes before maybe being relocated to other sites in the wild? That would be a dream to see this channel helping restore such a wonderful species, and the largest amphibian in all of north America.
      They're such adorable goofy lookin fellas.

  • @szymonkania3068
    @szymonkania3068 10 днів тому

    Dayum, this channel is fulfillment of my dreams, so hyped up for the hatchery. Btw, trees are great way to keep a clear water in a pond, because their crowns are stopping sunlight from getting to the water surface which prevents algae growth. In such large body of water it might be beneficial to have some at least on the side where the sun shines most of the year. Adding some kind of clamshells helps too, because they feed on algaes, they also sift through the detritus (decomposing parts of dead plants fish, etc) which prevents creation of mud, which in the long term causes shallowing of reservoirs, plus they are another part of the foodchain, a lot of fish feed on them when they are small

      Agreed. I live on the waterfront in downtown Toronto, on lake Ontario. There's a series of buildings that installed floating platforms (maybe a meter wide) that were planted with grasses, and it's crazy how many animals crawl up on them. It's almost strange to be surrounded by skyscrapers, look down beside a major street and see a mix of ducks, swans and even turtles hanging out on those little floating islands. I even saw a beaver on one of them once!

    • @PurpleDrac
      @PurpleDrac 29 днів тому +2

      part of me wishes he'd put some of those lillies over in the five acre but probably harder to monitor with it being much bigger than Cedar Falls. more floating features and more structure.
      I always felt like he could use more stuff underneath. he's got a few good spots in there but only a handful ... in a five acre pond I feel like there should be more. would love to see some of those aqua blue stones make their way over.
      loved the tunnels he put in there but he's got cinderblocks in the two center columns. (out of six) that only leaves them four tunnels to swim uninterrupted. if they're trying to get away from birds would be nice to have those other two or perhaps a second pyramid. over even a rock pile with passable hideouts kinda like how Ed's got it over in Cedar Falls. if you look at the unfilled shots he's got all kinds of space. I think it could a little more structure!! ☺️Lol. 😊

      @@Sam-in7ue edging off the bass population was the point of the fish he just added,if they don’t work a smaller bass wouldn’t be a bad idea especially since the tiger bass would still be eating the perch or rock bass anyway, some of the bass in that pond are 4 pounds, a 1-2lb perch or rock bass would help keep the smaller tiger bass in check from taking over the pond while the bigger 4 pounders will eat them and pack on pounds before winter. If he’s going for record bass then he should consider it when he knows the pond has a healthy population of 4-6 pounders already

    Yellow perch would be cool to see. Also adding a smallmouth to the smash pond could result in a hybrid meanmouth bass. It would also be awesome to see more of a predator fish in the small pond. Not something that will really mess with the adult bass or bigger bluegill... but something like a channel catfish, chain pickerel, bowfin, smaller species of gar, striped bass, hybrid striped bass.
    I'll lock in a chain pickerel as my vote as they don't get too big and they're a beautiful fish.

Their wide variety of root length creates a solid blanket that keeps the soil in place and out compete trees and other unwanted bushes that need more time to develop deep roots and on top of that it helps the diversity of insects and it should decrease the amount of maintenance you currently have maintaining the pond dikes

      @PurpleDrac 29 днів тому

      those mainly eat crawfish and other bottom dwellers. perhaps he could do a separate feeding for them but before I delve too deep into that suppose they could live off some of the baitfish that's in the pond. but that would mean hunting near the surface and the shoreline .. I think another rock structure in there somewhere for them to hide in would be kinda neat.
      he didn't have too much in there before filling it up with water. I would've put some seagrass at the bottom from what I've gathered they don't root too far down from their surfacing level. about to two to four inches that clay blanket he's got is pretty thick and would sustain it. as for more structures, suppose he could always sink another stone cave composed of aqua bluestones and the likes if he was to ever introduce it. I would definitely do a separate rock pile for it to hide in. 😎

    • @PurpleDrac
      @PurpleDrac 29 днів тому

      as for the specifics to what kinda seagrass. Bama again (if you're in the comments) some shoal grass, widgeon or manatee grass roots don't grow to be very large not sure if even a few inches is enough to pose a significant threat to the clay liner but hey it's the thought 👍🏽that counts! ✌🏽😉

Needless to say we're getting a pretty good dose of that in today's video. 😎
      yes they will leap out of water for the larger forage fish. If I had to guess they're low percentage breeding might've been the reason he went with this particular group. white suckers on the other hand have been known to grow to some pretty impressive sizes and too large for the bass to eat.
      They even have videos of those on here type in the search bar whites sucker videos and you're sure to come across some of them. I mean tank sized forage fish. I wanted to feed it to a goliath grouper when I saw it. That's how massive they were! 💀💧

      those tend to do better with their native inhabitants but adding one to a large mouth population might not be so bad considering it's mostly bass that's in the pond. I was thinkin perhaps another channel cat again (native species) like shadow but a red tail don't sound too bad. if he gets one I think it should go over in Cedar Falls where there's tropical lillies to give it that at home feel.

    • @saxophonerman1239
      @saxophonerman1239 Місяць тому

      I don’t think the red tails would like the cold that much and they would probably eat a bunch of bass.

    • @PurpleDrac
      @PurpleDrac Місяць тому

      @@saxophonerman1239 that's the scary part and they grow quick! if it's got a wide enough mouth it will dwarf the bass. but I've seen them coexist with 🦚peacocks again (native species) to what would be the guest from the Amazon river basin .. but those are peacocks. 😐

    • @PurpleDrac
      @PurpleDrac Місяць тому

      Of course a fish from the same habitat is gonna know how to keep clear of a red tail but a largemouth not so sure. they're about equally as aggresive as the peacock you would think there wouldn't be any issues (there shouldn't be)
      Catch 'Em All Zack has some with his largemouths and seem to get along well but that's an enclosure under constant supervision. a pond we're given it a little more freedom to do whatever and can't say bass are off entirely off limits again. if it's got a wide enough mouth it'll try to eat them most certainly.

    My beautiful GSP, Ginger, recently passed,
    Her favorite channel to watch was BamaBass.
    Many hours we spent watching episodes over and over,
    Until the day I had to hold her over my shoulder.
    I spend days now thinking of our history together,
    No matter the day, the night, the weather.
    Everytime I get a notification from your channel,
    Love and gratitude fill my heart to the ultimate level.
    BamaBass, Thank you for the Entertainment and Memories.

    Being from the deep south and having used wild gold shiners as bait for decade upon decade, I have caught bass with shiners half the basses size. If you are going to want those shiners to survive, you probably are going to want some aquatic vegetation for cover and for spawning. I have tried to stock them in ponds that were rather clean and they did not last long if there were predator fish in there. The aquatic vegetation will also help with food for the shiners.

    Great video! I have always been curious to see how deep golden shiners go in the winter months. I'm from southern Illinois and we have a bunch of lakes with submerged grass. My thoughts are that on warmer, bright days with little to no wind, the shiners will be in the backs of bays and coves. Especially if there are multiple warm days. But when it's cloudy and cold, I'm sure they go deep. Just curious on how deep. Thanks.

    Good idea about keeping that feeder active. And same goes for all your equipment. As fare as the electronics is concerned any equipment with electrolytics needs to remain powered. Else the plates of the caps will collapse and short. I have two 1980 power amps that have never been off except for power failures and they still work just fine.(44 years) Except for the pots which needs a cleaning every decade.
    If you put working gear up for 5 years it is likely to not work (or humm real bad) when you next power it up and you will have to dig through it to replace the caps.
