Hi! I also have horsefield tortoises, we started off with a smaller enclosure like the size of a small rabbit hutch as the tortoises were quite small, then as they grew bigger we got them a new cage about every 2 years. My male tortoise zippy is now 13 and my female tortoise is 12 and they live in a 5ft by 2ft enclosure. But it's okay to just give them the large enclosure first as it saves A LOT of money honestly it's your choice :) ~ hope this helps :D
Gosh I love you and your husband for doing this. Such a lucky fella, you did a great job. I have a chelonoidis chilensis (31 years old), a native species from the north of my country (Argentina) and they excel by being excellent climbers, for being rough (they usually hit their shell against stones or anything hard they see on their way, especially in mating season), and although they're vegetarians usually eat everything they should not: stones, earth, sand, etc, etc. When I saw the vine, the first thing I thought was "OMG, what happens if he wants to eat it" and immediately you said you were going to be attentive, so I breathed deeply haha (only those who care for tortoises understand that paranoia for our little babies hahaha). Thanks for sharing this beautiful video! :)
I finally found a person that's not annoying and actually loves their tortoises. Great job! Although i don't have a tortoise yet, I'm getting a lot of ideas for enclosures and species before i choose.
I just recently got a baby box turtle and I'm trying to figure out an enclosure that won't have me cleaning every weekend. This is a great space but what do you do about cleaning out the poop?? Do you have to swap out the dirt filling every certain amount of time?
Just a thought, My wife started chopping up our 2 torts dandelion and veggies. They seem to eat more with the bite size pieces instead of tearing their own. Love the enclosure!
My husband is pretty handy, so I am going to have him build this for me. Question, what is that you have the house sitting on? And where can I get that? Thanks!
Do you have an outdoor enclosure as well? I’m getting a hatchling and am wondering if I need to worry about digging out. Also thinking I should put netting over the top to keep out birds etc. I basically plan to take him/her in and out with me lol
I made a tortoise table too. For my Russian Lois. According to the vet, she is roughly 40 years old. Ive had her for 15 years. I bought a plastic top table and put wood around the sides. I lined it with a tarp. It's about 3×6 or so.
