The Eastern Box Turtle has always been my favorite. But, being born and raised in Florida, I am surrounded by the Florida Gopher Tortoise. I am beginning to appreciate the Gopher Tortoise more. They crawl through my yard all the time and they are all over the neighborhood. Fun to watch them "mow" my lawn. They seem to be shy, sweet creatures. I don't even touch one unless it is out in the road - and then only to get it to safety. What you teach is priceless. I'm sure it makes a difference in how well turtles and tortoises thrive in captivity. Thank you for doing that.

Thank you so much for your video! A year ago my son asked me to buy him a Russian tortoise. Unfortunately I don't have any experience with this. This also made me make some small mistakes. Fortunately, I accidentally saw your channel, and I learned a lot of knowledge! Now our whole family loves her very much.

I’ve found a tortoise in my garden last night (UK, cold north). This video has been very helpful, I’ve made up a bed of damp grass, straw, salad and water. I’m worried it’s not eating or drinking but perhaps it’s a bit stressed in its current living situation. The vets and animal places are closed for a few days but it’s my plan to reach out and see if they can find if it’s chipped. Thanks for the video!

Thank you for this channel. I love it. When i was a kid i always went to the Pet Shop to save the water turtles from their too little aquaria with too much little turtles. My mother hated it that i was doing this. At that time there was not much information how to give them the best. But i knew inside. I had them for years and i loved them so much. Till i went for a schoolweek to Paris. My brother was taking care, but there went something wrong. They died when i was away. Never knew why. But i know that little turtles depends on your care and attention. Doing the right thing is so important. Thats why im happy you show a lot. Thank you very much.

Excellent video. Much more information than I received at a vet visit who was supposed be a reptile specialist. But it did raise some questions for me. 1. You mentioned UVB bulb of 10.0. I am using a 5.0 because I was afraid a 10.0 was too strong for the distance the bulb is from the tortoise (Russian). If I were to move to a 10.0 what is the distance I would put it above the tortoise. 2. You mentioned not to use a red bulb for basking, do you have a favorite alternative and a recommended basking temperature for a Russian. Thank you very much.

    • @GardenStateTortoise

Thank you Suzan. Think of them like chickens. The females still produce the eggs and lay them but they will be infertile unless a male breeds with the female and fertilizers her. Only then will the eggs be fertile and eventually hatch after the mother lays them in the ground and they incubate.

We are caring for a southwest desert tortoise for a couple more weeks. He has gotten very restless and testing all barriers. He eats grass and tortoise food but seems less interested in eating. We’ve had rain so I thought maybe he senses the monsoon and is seeking high ground? We give him a big water dish to go in and have a container we soak him in in the afternoons when it’s been 115. When he first came he was happy to eat for hours on grass, but he has gotten so restless he isn’t eating much. I’d like to give him other food but not sure what he is ok to eat other than the occasional strawberry. He lives outdoors at the desert botanical garden in his own little yard and we have him in our backyard. But it has been HOT! He has a burrow we made him that is shaded as well and frequently overnights outside of his burrow. He will go home to the garden after they are finished with the remodel of the house attached to his yard. But I just want to make sure he is as happy as possible.

I have 2 moving onto my property this weekend! I have 5 acres of Arizona desert I plan to free graze them in... I plan on rotating them around the property until big enough to control his own movement.... Trying to learn how to care for them properly

Is there a book or books you can suggest for someone who wants to adopt a tortoise? Something that will give them the information they need to successfully raise the right one? Thank you for the informative video!

Thank you so much for your videos!! What is your opinion on feeding on a peice of slate to help keep the beak worn down? Does it work or should a different method be used?
