@@billdaugherty2402 I lived most of my life in Egypt. This is definitely not tourism police, this guy is special security that accompany Ministers, diplomats,etc. Yet, AKs are very common among regular police.
That was Tourism Police, our guide said that the hotel sometimes calls them when you have a big group (we were 12 Americans.) He didn't really do much, but walked around with us on our tour. We never felt unsafe at any point, Our guide said that he wasn't necessary, and we felt the same way but they sent him anyway. Outside of Cairo we did not have tourist police
It's extremely conserved after more than 5 millennia, and as a UNESCO world heritage site, they're not allowed to reconstruct it in order to preserve its historical integrity.

It's an MP5, usually accompany diplomats. Weird seeing security service on tours.
