Lock or Quantize Audio to Grid with Reaper

- I've seen a lot of questions about how to get audio to fit to the grid on Reaper. It's an important step in the editing process, for sure, but here are two methods you can use to save yourself some time.
There's one more method that's a little more complicated (it's a good blend of these two), feel free to comment if you want to see that one, as well!
1:04 - Method 1: Slice and Slip
3:01 - Method 2: Dynamic Split and Quantize
finally someone who explains this well. thanks my guy! you literally saved me so many of hours of innumerable takes.
Saving time by manipulating time, it’s the only way :) enjoy the extra time by drinking nice hot chocolate and learning to ski
Thank you so much my dude. This is going to tighten up my drum recordings and take them to the next level!!
You’re welcome! Glad this is going to save you some time :)
the last month i try to find a good explanation about editing in reaper. Your video by far is the best of all, thanks men big help for me
Good job on this tutorial. You have no idea how much I will be using this in the future. I wish I could give you 10 thousand dollars as thanks. But, I hope thanks will do.
Glad it was helpful! This problem gave me so much trouble in my first few months of using Reaper, so if I can help people get beyond it and start making their creative dreams come true, I’m happy :)
This was immensely helpful
Glad it was helpful! Any other issues you’ve been having with Reaper?
You just saved me hours and hours of editing with dynamic splitting and quantizing. Yes, maybe 30 minutes of fiddling with various parameters, but I now have to nudge only 10% of items.
Love to hear that, I’ve found it super helpful for bass! Glad you saved some time :)
I spent a few hours searching until I found this. Thank you. It's to the point with no waffle. Best regards. And . Subscribed.
Thanks Peter! I appreciate it :) I’ve been a little slow on new uploads lately but hope I can get back to it soon.
how did this take you hours to find
I've been using the first method and it's way too tedious. I've always wondered if there's a faster way. This is a huge help!
But the human factor on the first method made for better listening in this example. Both are good
its funny cuz im from colombia.. and i could not find a good explanation about this one, on my native language.. and i finally made it with you.. thank you so so much!! the second method is awesome
I’m glad I could help! I wonder if I can put some tags in other languages? I want everyone to be able to use Reaper easily!
@@ReaperTutorials definitely in spanish you can add somoething like: #latinamerica #reaperenespañol .. thats how i have found a lot.. once again thank you!!
Nice! This is exactly what I was looking for. 😃
Exactly what I was after. Thanks for this!
Thanks for this tutorial. I downloaded Pro tools and Reaper and with all the searching and watching I've done I feel Reaper would be my best bet as it seems to be more stable and is more streamlined. The ability to tighten up a track rhythm wise, and the ability to pitch correct are the two important edits I am looking for. I have the Adobe software and That has it's strong points as well. I subscribed to your channel because I like the way you explain things and show the before and after , along with your suggestions. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for the comment! I definitely think Reaper gives you more options out of the box, especially when you add on the ‘SWS extensions’. I’ll admit that Reaper can be a little overwhelming to get set up initially (project folders don’t organize in an intuitive way for users coming from other DAWs)
I’ve got another video I recommend for people getting started with Reaper to at least make sure you know where the menus and settings are that set up the way your files are saved:
ua-cam.com/video/iiF5tCfHcvo/v-deo.html
Hope that saves you some headache :)
I do also like Adobe Audition for the out of the box options, especially some of the noise correction and reverb plugins. They serve me well when I’m working on video :)
Thanks for this video!!!!!
Great tip and i wish I had seen this video years ago! Thank you!
Thanks! It can be a huge time saver in some situations :)
Thank you. Great tip.
thank you for the second method!
Very helpful! Thank you 🙏
wow, this was really helpful!!! im gonna be manually slipping my vocals on my rap stuff alll the time, and maybe even split and quantize to grid on the piano.....thanks!! 55'pce
Fantastic, totally Reaping the benefits
Glad to hear it! Reap reap reap!
Very helpful, thank you!
Absolutely! Thanks for watching :)
Thank you SO MUCH!
thanks for the tutorial I will definitely use it when layer vocal tracks
Ohhh no, no, please anything but the vox. That's where the magic happens....really though. Cheers
great tutorial!!! thanks, make more please
Thanks! I miss making these, will hopefully make some more soon :)
The solution is to create a pseudo "Tempo Map" by installing SWS Extensions and using "SWS/BR: Move closest grid line to play cursor". Assign a shortcut key to this custom action (I use "." (period)). Set your grid to ~quarter notes, move the play cursor to the beginning of the transient closest the beat 1 of each measure, and press the shortcut key. This will make your click fall on that transient. You can do it on each quarter note, etc., or skip a series of bars that stay on beat. You will end-up with a variety of (closely matching) tempos, and the rest of your tracks and MIDI will quantize to the grid that now matches the tempo of the audio. It sure is a lot easier and more accurate than splitting and chopping-up your audio. :)
Certainly a good way of doing it. I feel like this is something you can only do once every recording has been finished, though, so you don’t have someone trying to record over a bpm that changes every 4 measures.
Like the SWS stuff though :)
@@dnxlko I'm glad this helped! You can also move the grid to the Edit Cursor, or even the Mouse Cursor. I think the difference between this and the video is that the video techniques maintain a constant BPM by adjusting the audio to fit the grid, while this technique adjusts the grid to fit the audio. Personally, I had an audio track that must have been recorded with multiple takes, and the time varied significantly-enough that by the end, the click was way off. This technique helped me build my MIDI (i.e.: Drums, and others) to quantize exactly as needed without distorting the exquisite audio (vocal) track. I guess the good news is that there are many ways Reaper can help produce great music. :)
Thank you good sir!
Absolutely! Glad it was helpful :)
Thanks for sharing! From Argentina.
Absolutely! I’m glad it was helpful :)

How is there a whole tutorial about this, and zero mention of stretch edits? I'm happy I found this, it seems like there are a few good tips in here. But stretch edits seem to be a big hole here.
Admittedly, I didn’t know a ton about stretch markers until after I made this video. And when I first found out about them, I didn’t like them, but I’ve learned what a difference it makes to use different pitch shift algorithms for different instruments. Now I can’t live without them for certain audio fixes :)
Definitely a good topic for another video! I can at least share my stretch marker workflow/tips. Anything with stretch markers that you think I should cover?
Thanks for watching!
Thank you very much!
Of course! Hope it was helpful :)

@@ReaperTutorials It really was! Big thanks!
Cool video. Thank you I was wondering if there was a way control quantize strength with the automatic method, like with midi? Didn't seem to be present in the option menu in this video. That would really cool.
Oh good question! There is a way to do that using the Groove tool, which is a part of the SWS extensions: sws-extension.org/
I'm not 100% sure how to get the groove tool to do exactly what I want it to, but it would be a good place to start your search!
Thanks for this video, exactly what I needed to know. Is it also possible to apply a swing groove quantize, this option is not listed.
Yes, there's a way to do that. Check out another great Reaper channel: ua-cam.com/video/ZY3fiDV8hIE/v-deo.html
Hello there, thanks for the tutorial, very useful. But one question please. When this operation is done, do we have to re-glue all the parts ? I think no, but what could happen if we do
Hello! Glad it was useful :) If you're happy with the result when it's finished, you can glue the parts. Just be sure that there aren't any extra pops or clicks that you didn't notice. You could also group the items (Highlight the items you want to stick together and press "G") if you want them to move together as a unit, but don't want the permanence of a glue.
Either technique works, and I tend to use gluing so I don't accidentally change the length of a grouped item.
@@ReaperTutorials Perfect :) Thank you
Hey what do u recommend me to do for bass lines where notes overlap eachother? your example's cool, but it does not work for longer bass lines.
Sorry for the delayed response, for overlapping stuff, you'll probably have to go in and manually split those out so you can do as much as possible in an automated way.
Let's say you have a verse that is consistent, single notes, and the chorus is more complicated and needs manual editing. Split the verse from the chorus, then automate the verse.
Other option is to look into 'Stretch Markers', which are really useful when splitting is not an option. Hope that helps!!
Hi there. Are you using the default settings inside dynamic split items? And the action to perform, was it set to split selected items?
3:58 has all the settings on screen - It's not default settings, and the action was set to Split selected items. You could also do this by creating stretch markers if you wanted to go that route. I think that's a little less confusing to manage, honestly.
Really thanx
Thanks for the comment! It's always good to know when this is helpful for people.
@@ReaperTutorials yeah, i always work with pro tools (in studio) or logic...... Reaper is amazing!!!! 😁😁😁...... Really helpful
very useful Thx.
Do you guys rather work on Reaper instead of Ableton or so?
If so, why?
Thanks for watching! I’ve used both Reaper and Ableton, and I usually do more surgical audio editing with custom keystrokes, so I like reaper for the ability to create my own custom actions easily.
I think if I was doing live performance or using more hardware MIDI instruments, I’d probably use Ableton as it integrates much easier with MIDI. Reaper is good with MIDI, but has a steeper learning curve than Ableton, IMO.
That said, I did use Reaper to help me control a video game based on notes I played into the stock tuner plugin, so it’s pretty powerful
"So I'm going to turn the grid Offfff [proceeds to blow air all in my ears]"
Lolol sorry, this must have been before I put my mic out of the line of ffffffire
I knew reaper was the best, but I was too lazy to look this up and I just tried to play in time ha. Thanks for this nonetheless.
Hahaha I find a mixture of trying to play decently in time and knowing how to edit well makes for some quick work :)
Hi there, my BPM keeps changing, I want to keep it to 142bpm but keeps fluctuating during the track, how do I turn this off? Driving me to distraction!!! Thanks in advance 👍
Hi! Sorry for the delay - for some reason I’m not getting notifications. Is your problem happening after you quantize to the grid like what I cover in the video?
Two things to try:
If you select View > Master Track, do you see a light blue line with points on it? That would mean that your tempo is changing. You can delete any points on that line to keep your tempo the same.
If that doesn’t work, you can check your project settings (File > Project Settings) and make sure your “Timebase for items/envelopes/markers” is set to “Time”. The second option “Timebase for tempo/time signature envelope can be set to either Beats or Time, that won’t give you the problem you’re mentioning.
If that doesn’t solve it, I’d need to see a screenshot to really tell what’s going on. Happy to help out over Instagram @yourlocalbassoonist
Saw a comment come through and it may have been deleted - I'm splitting audio using the "S" key
The S key and what?
Is this referenced in the help PDF?
I appreciate the response but...... just saying "the S Key".... really ?
Just the S key:
- select an item
- put the timeline play head in the location you want to split
- press S
Select Item. choose split point. Hit the S key. Simples. :)
Probably due to updates, the content in the diologue boxes no longer match. When I select your recommenced settings the reduce splits quantity is frozen and you can't set a value for it and the split button is grayed out so the second function/method appears to be usless. While experimenting with the new boxes to try to get it to work, Reaper crashed. Also the second method does't work for anything composed in MIDI because there are no transients. I can play a guitar in rhythm becuase I've been doing it for 20 years. Drum pads I'm new to and that's were I need help.
Sorry for the delay!
Not sure why things would have been frozen, unless it didn't have an active item to target, or something. Not sure but if you can recreate it, please let me know!
Ah, for the drum pads, you can go into the midi editor directly and quantize from there. Try double clicking on the midi item and it will pull open a new window for you, then you should see some options at the top. One of them would allow you to quantize, but that's the place to go for MIDI!
@@ReaperTutorials no worries! I knew this was an older video so I wasn't expecting a response, but thank you!
when quantizing multitracked drums can I do multiple tracks at the same time or do I need to go through each individual track and slice and slide?
That's a good question! I'm 80% sure that you can do dynamic split across multiple items. I know you can quantize across multiple tracks. Will check after work and get back to you.
Following up, dynamic split works across multiple tracks, just need to highlight all the items you want to split!
Awesome thanks so much for the reply. I’ve got some bleed through on the multitracked drums and just want to make sure I’m not getting double hits etc.
@MountainGn0m3 ah, yeah that would be tricky. I wonder if you would need to group all the tracks together so they split in the same places?
Maybe put them into a folder and freeze them? That would keep you from getting double hits, otherwise I think you’re right that the bleed would be an issue
Why is cross fading necessary? Would the items sequence sound unnatural without it? Thank you
It’s more useful for the first method. The default method of splitting would put a fade out/fade in between the two items. It isn’t always noticeable if you split at a quiet point, but sometimes it leaves an audible gap. It has happened enough times (specifically in podcast editing) that I’ve just turned on crossfades by default. It’s not 100% necessary but it’s good to know that the feature exists
I tried this on one of my songs and I got a lot of added click, clacks and crackles. I am not sure what I did wrong.
Yeah, sometimes it’s more than just this fix. Are they seemingly random clicks/crackles? You may try a couple things:
- turn the sample rates / bit depths in reaper and your system audio settings to the lowest reasonable settings (44.1k 16-bit)
- try restarting the computer after you change your settings
- try increasing the buffer size to some larger number in Reaper (I can’t remember if that’s an option in WASAPI shared mode). I usually use something that is a power of 2, but I don’t think that’s required.
- if you have any effects on tracks, try turning those off and seeing if it makes a difference. If it does, you may need to *freeze* your tracks after recording to essentially print the effects to a new audio item.
It’s hard to say what the problem is when that starts happening, I remember going through multiple system restores before I found that it was my motherboard that needed to be replaced, so hopefully you don’t have to do that.
I selected the auto crossfade but when I auto split it doesn't auto crossfade
Oh interesting, I guess I never checked if it kept the auto cross fade setting when auto splitting, BUT I do put an auto cross fade in when quantizing the items - that’s what the “extend starts of items...” checkbox does.
I’m not at my computer now so I can’t actually check but I think that’s right!
@@ReaperTutorials I did see that but I had already written my comment hahah sorry bout that
I will start over...
I imported a WAV and I want to line it up with a grid.
1) I can’t move the WHOLE wav left or right
2) I can’t select the size of the portion to shift
3) I can’t change the grid SIZE( tempo) without changing the tempo and pitch of the wave.
And NONE OFTHIS IS EXPLAINED IN THE NO HELP FILE
For #1 and #2, I need some more info to figure out exactly what you’re trying to do, but I’ll take a stab:
It sounds like you just want to click and drag in the middle of the item to move it left or right. You can change the size of the item by grabbing the right or left sides (if you hover over the left and right end of each item, you’ll see your cursor change to a different icon).
Can you let me know if you’re used to working in other DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations like Pro Tools, Ableton, Cakewalk, etc.)? If you’re coming from ProTools and you’re looking to emulate the time selection behavior you get in that software, I can help out with that, too, but want to make sure I understand what you’re after.
For #3, I know exactly what you’re talking about:
Head to project settings (File > Project Settings) and make sure your “Timebase for items/envelopes/markers” is set to “Time”. The second option “Timebase for tempo/time signature envelope can be set to either Beats or Time, that won’t give you the problem you’re mentioning.
This is something that catches a lot of people I’m teaching off guard at first (despite me encouraging them to change the setting right away, haha) but this is a good setting to locate, in case you ever *DO* want your items to stretch to the grid.
Surely if you are strumming on guitar there is no way to split that?
It would be difficult, dynamic split will probably give you a lot of bad splits.
For that, I’d probably use “stretch markers” for minor tweaks.
Everytime I try the second method, my track disappears
Hmmm that’s not good! After which step does it disappear? After the dynamic split, Or the Quantize step?
Is this the guy from You Suck At Cooking?
Hahaha no but now I have to see who that is
“ just the S key”..... thx but this splits the line.... but with no control over how much line gets shifted
When you say “line” do you mean the audio line? Pressing S will split the item so you’ll have two items on either side of the timeline cursor (the bright greenish blue vertical line that shows where your audio is going to start playing back).
Once you split the item with “S” you can then move the two items independently, so try splitting one, then clicking and dragging one on the left or right side. They might both be selected by default, so you may have to click on just one of them first before trying to click and drag to move it.
Also, I have a podcast project to work on today, so I might stream it a bit. If you want to hop on I can really try to answer some of your questions live and demonstrate what I mean. To me, text alone can’t capture use cases very well.
Omg it is a sin to do some stuff in XXI century when FL Studio has NewTime. Using this method you can not make note longer so if musician hurried a bit you can do nothing to fix that
Not sure if you're coming here because you're learning Reaper or wanting to shit on it, but I'll assume you're here with good intentions and are curious how you might handle stretching a note to fit.
Three levels of difficulty:
Does an individual note need to be generally longer? Slice around it, hold Alt on windows (probably option on Mac) and drag it out to time stretch the whole thing.
Do you need to reshape the articulation? Add stretch markers at the attack/sustain/release points and drag them as needed, update the pitch shift algorithm and adjust the stretch marker fade size so it doesn't sound like a butt.
Do you need to reshape a *LOT* of articulations? Use the dynamic split method, but assign stretch markers at the transients instead of splitting them. Then quantize stretch markers to the grid.
---------
I set my option to 'Add Time Stretch Marker at Cursor Position' to Shift + W and it's really quick to add them where I need and move things around.

"turn the grid off".... HOW !!!!???? actually I can do that...
but then the next actions....ZERO G&DDAMN HOW TO.
Let's land a plane !!!..... its easy....... intercept the loc, then one dot before GS, gear down, final flaps not later than 1000' agl in vfr and brakes per perf chart.
What I just said was absolutely accurate..... but I goddamn dare you to try it.
Reaper's manual is long....wordy.... and useless.
And most of theae damn you tubes.... the person MIGHT know what he is doing.... but NONE of the people are INSTRUCTORS...... and NONE took the time to lay the explanation out in a LOGICAL lesson plan format......they ARE therefore wasting my time
