      YES! @Reaper give this guy a job in your marketing division or make a position simply entitled "Ideas Guy" a.s.a.p. Missing out on the little things like that is like missing out on a chance to make a good thing great. It's the tiniest of differences that can separate another 'great' product from an Unforgettable one and I guarantee everyone who reads this will forever think of them as Reapositories! Lol

    Some of the JS stuff is pretty great but it's easy to get lost in how many plugins are available. Also the lack of decent GUI on them makes them not enjoyable to use. That said, some of the tools and scripts are ridiculously powerful and it's awesome that people spend so much time to create these things to just give them away for free.

      The only thing that matters is the sound you get. I love mixing with airwindows plugins, and I don't give a flying fuck they don't have their own GUIs. As long as I get the sound I am after, I'm satisfied.

      Mtaalas valid point, but making music and recording is my hobby, not my profession, so I want to enjoy my time. It is far more enjoyable for me to use a thoughtfully laid out GUI than the sliders of the JS plugins. It's cool that Glenn uses them for their simple utility, but I already have enough tools from professionally developed plugins to get the job done. Where Reaper becomes amazing to me are some of the custom actions I can develop and also the processing scripts and theming that allow me to really enjoy working on music.

    A quick note on free plugins/emulations. I'm not knocking freebies. They do work. But most freebies are made using the original schematic, which means the are mathematically correct. But real world analog gear operates with a margin of error. Resisters, etc (especially vintage tech) actually have varying tolerances. IE a 2k resister might actually be above or below the actual 2k, and in a successive chain all these parts can have massive effects on tone. The paid plugins are expensive because the techs at the company actually went to the studio and measured the exact tolerances of the particular units they are based on (often part by part) so the end result is most accurate to the real analog product.
    What does this mean. If you watch glens video "This EQ trick Rules on Metal Guitar" He compares the puigtech compressor to an emulated free version, and while he liked the free version, he wasn't able to dial in the desired tone as easily. The reason for this, is analog gear, again, has different tolerances and the variations in the actual parts and colours the tones in the end result. The free version was just an emulation made using the exact mathematical signal chain. So the free plugin is technically the most correct version based on the schematic, but as analog gear is imperfect the colouration of the tone actually had a more pleasing effect than the technically correct version. It "warmed" the tone.
    In short what you're paying for with the paid plugins is an emulation of the actual analog gear used on all the great albums. What you get with free plugins is pretty much a fancy GUI. They still work. But you aren't getting what made the original device legendary, which was it's imperfections.
    So what I'm really saying is if you are going to use freebies, you're almost better off using the plugins that come with your DAW, unless you like the "feel" of dialing in the tone on an analog box which the GUI will give you. But if you're after the SOUND of the analog boxes that they are based on, you are better off paying the cost.

    • @StatutoryRock
      @StatutoryRock 2 роки тому

      Yeah but you say the techs went and measured the analog gear? So say the gear they measured the transistor is 2.4 K (above) but the compressor on the album you like, that transistor was really 1.8 K. Now like you said, multiply that variance throughout an entire signal chain and it will start to make going and measuring actual gear a bit silly.
      The great albums sound great because the engineer used his ears until it sounded good. Not because magic analog deviations made it good. Same can be done with free plugins I assume that emulate the exact schematic.

    I’m having trouble with my VSTs not loading when I pull up a file. Even my slate VMR, any experience with this problem?

    I don't have an "Extensions" menu option at the top of my window - how else can I get to the place to paste the github link. Many thanks!

    Glenn...I can't thank you and Adam enough about hyping up Reaper to the point where I actually decided to give it a shot and buy it. I was using Studio One Pro (which I paid like $400 for) for a ep project and my cpu would crap out only in that particular DAW. So then I got the Cakewalk by Bandlab DAW which is free. Worked great...until the automation part was failing. Had to ditch that. I had $60 left in my paypal account. So I said fuck it. Let's try Reaper. And I love it! May not be the coolest looking graphic wise but it's just as good as any other DAW out there and the automation doesn't have a "FUCK YOUR MIX" function like Cakewalk did. 🤗

    Not just reaper, you can use ReaJS to run these in other daws

      Cool! Now the real question: how??

    • @robchokehold
      @robchokehold 4 роки тому +2

      @@SpectreSoundStudios You'll need to load the ReaJS plugin (part of ReaPlugs) in any Windows VST2 host software, then load any text file that contains JSFX plugin code.
      All JSFX plugins are essentially text files with the plaintext code inside them. The ReaPack system is just a convenient way to install JSFX by ticking checkboxes in Reaper, rather than copying a bunch of weird code into a text file outside of Reaper and saving it to the right location. But that's how you would get non-ReaPack JSFX plugins onto your machine, copy their code from GitHub or wherever you found it into a text file, put it somewhere on your hard drive, then open the ReaJS plugin, click the "Load" button and browse to one of those text files with JSFX code in them. Alternatively, you could also use the "Edit" button on the ReaJS plugin and just copy & paste the JSFX code directly from its source into the plugin.

    What if someone made a complete Ableton plug-in for Reaper?

    Been using cool edit pro 15 years, will use it for the next 51 years.
    No plug ins, whatever they are.
    Even fruity loops seems better than reaper

    Is my audiophile sound card to blame for ever present latency when tracking anything even in reaper? Asus xonar essence stx, I've read it has a lot of latency even if you bypass it and run headphone out of an interface. Would appreciate any help
