Good old Yahtzee only thing missing from that statement is a couple "soapy tit wanks" and a "big lovely pair of sweaty baps" and you have a perfect summary of what that dudes all about lol.
Monty, the most impressive feat of this video series is your restraint in being a backseat gamer lol My gf got stuck at the same vault section at the tutorial level and I could only take two minutes of her running back and forth to and from the big gate lol this is a wonderful series 👍🏻
This was a really unforgiving start to my souls obsession in 2010. Full support to the quasi-noobus. Not afraid to admit Phalanx took me out a time or two, and the damn monumental ... to be fair, I'd never played anything like this title. Careful though, pretty soon she's gonna wipe the floor with your face in Elden pvp. Lovely vid as always.
Dark souls was my first title I died 4 times in firelink to the tower guys trying to learn how to parry before I gave up I didn't learn the parry mechanic until after lord gwyn when I died nearly 20 times granted I was 9 at the time and I sucked at games
100% agree I remember getting it for christmas and playing it and immediately putting it down for 6 months. Then giving it one more go and and ended up invested in the series ever since. The tutorial area is not the best. Extremely unforgiving layout. In the original the pit near the start is covered with fog and definitely accounted for more deaths than in the remake. The fire wasn't as pronounced in the original either. So it wasn't as obvious as it is now that it was weak against fire. Nor was resins as well known as it was back then to use all the time. Maybe its because I was given a small quantity and most RPGs things like that I shy away from. and the Phalanx definitely gave me quite a few deaths before figuring out how to do it.
I love ur woman!! I love the fact that she is cool enough to give fromsoft games a chance like this. Not to mention that she has consistently done better than my friend on each game lol. Idk just thought I’d put that out there. She’s a keeper my guy hold onto her
idea for the next video: Somwhat of an interview with your girlfriend! About the Souls-Series, of course. Ask her what she learned about the games, about game design, her favourite moments, favourite bosses... stuff like that would be pretty neat
12:17 in dark souls 1 you also can't level up before reaching firelink shrine. so basically they all have these initial barrier and i think it's a good idea
Dark souls 1 has a far shorter area and probably the easest of the first bosses to beat to be able to level up. You literally can take about half its health before you even start. And with the right gift can beat it before getting a weapon. Whereas phalanx has you go up a tower and back down another before bringing you back to the start. With some of the cheapest ways to kill you. As the flame barrels look almost immediately the same in the original, and so many ways to fall to your death.
I've always found it interesting how the approach to games always changes with the previous experience the player has. As some one who played a buttload of games and pretty much saw every type mechanic and a lot of ways they are combined, it's hard for me to put myself into the shoes of someone who hasn't experienced a lot of them and doesn't directly see how the systems are linked. these videos are super fun and eye opening keep up the good work!
agreed, its very interesting(and admitedly frustrating) to see someone that doesnt play games take minutes or hours to figure something out that i can tell in seconds from having played games for so long
That's why I've enjoyed this series, as well as Razbuten's, and watching Dan Ryckert's dad play Breath of the Wild on Twitch. There's so much we take for granted that seeing a less experienced person make assumptions based on real life logic and experience (such as stepping over something knee high or healing before a level-up/rest) not to mention the actual systems and mechanics, it shows there is more of an entry barrier than you might think.
@@uoodSJW That and we've experienced the evolution of games so certain things and tropes we just go well that's just how it works in video games. Like games that have no jump mechanic you know you have to find the specific path, so 20 years later we don't think that's an issue. But a noob looks and that and goes but why though?
The demon souls “half health bar” thing was far easier for me to adapt to vs the DS2 infinitely shortening health bar… For me i adjusted to the mechanic, especially with the cling ring, to the point where I played the majority of the game in soul form intentionally killing myself in the nexus to avoid world tendency issues
DS2 caps at 50% after 5 deaths (or 75% at 5 deaths with that one ring) normally, but if you've got a really high Sin score then it can go all the way down to only 10% max HP. But that's so hard to do most people don't even realize it goes below 50%.
Wwwwow. An infinitely shrinking health bar? Sooo the game gives you a crap sandwich and then just adds more and more salt to it; all the while probably scratching their heads and wondering, 'Why do they hate this game the most out of any in the series!?'
15:00 Interestingly enough, Dark Souls 3 basically has same system, but instead of cutting your HP down, you get HP and resistance bonus from using embers. If instead of showing your HP at 50%, it would shrink your health bar, i can guarantee a lot less people would find death mechanics of Dark Souls 2 and Demon's Souls that terrible. It would make it seems that being human gives you extra HP, rather than dying cutting you down.
@@JasperLane So true in dark souls 3 it feels liking using a rewards using the ember to get extra health. While in dark souls 2 I just get anoyed that my health is so low. Think in the end I used ring for it and just ignored that part of my health.
that's an excellent point - i never think i'm being punished if i die while embered, rather that i'm being rewarded when i become embered (either through boss kill or using an ember). the mechanic really is exactly the same in DS3 and DeS (other than % difference), but i dislike it in DeS while not even considering it in DS3. huh... maybe if both DeS and DS2 had started you at half health and remove it on you first boss kill, and then behaved the same as they currently do, the mechanic in both games wouldn't be as hated...
Well, embering is also far more forgiving. When you die while embered you're losing 23% of your max HP, which isn't nearly as much as Demon's Souls and isn't as much as DS2's loss at max hollowing. The mechanic being less swingy makes it feel less unbalanced and unfair because, well, it is. But the Max HP reduction mechanic is dumb in all of these games and thankfully it seems to be gone from Elden Ring. It doesn't really add anything positive and just creates needless frustration IMO.
ACKshully, the doll is only locked off until you have 1 insight. So you level up without even seeing a boss if you consume a mad man's knowledge. Granted first time players won't know that.
You can also enter the boss fog gate and then immediately exit after acquiring the Insight. Also not something that first time players would know, but still.
That was the experience for the entire game! Oh, first time players wouldn't know this. Oh, if you want that shiny you must first hop over here, jump over something that is the only version of the obstacle in the game that you can hop over ... bleah. Back then the web map was your only hope. Otherwise you wouldn't know to look behind the base of a statue to find a shiny. It's map was a life saver - at half-health life saving is important.
One of my favourite series's on youtube. I litteraly bought Demon souls 20 minutes ago so the timing couldent be better! Do you plan on subjecting the noobus to Elden ring?
That's the plan! Will be a good while away yet though - I'll need to play it through at the same time as everyone else - hopefully a couple of times - then recording time etc!
@@MontyZander Why not do two separate entries/series? Noobus vs Elden Ring (to continue this one) and Noobus and Zander Take on Elden Ring? It looks like the co-op is really good and really customizable.
I feel like the health system is more similar to Dark Souls 3. The embers give you more hp and it enable multiplayer, just like the Stone of Ephemeral Eyes. The only difference is that in Dark souls 3 you don't see the extra health you get from the embers and you never really feel like you are missing any hp.
A good comparison is Monster Hunter Rise. There are animals called spirit birds around the levels which boost your stats until the end of the run when collected. The birds are a buff and a pretty sizeable one when maxed, enough to double your max health. Problem is the way Rise presents this information to the player. When loading into a map we have our health bar and we have a massive empty section that fills out as we collect green birds. So while collecting them makes your max health double, the game presents it in such a way that that feels like you are operating at half max health at the start of every hunt. We all know they are a buff but the presentation makes it feel like you are penalized for not having the buff.

Your original dark souls video hooked me into the series and I’ve been playing it since. With demons souls being my first souls game, I’m so glad you finally made this video.
14:54 You might already know this, but I just wanna say that in the original version of DeS, the reduced health is much more clear, with a blue bar covering the health you don't have, and a much more obvious graphic showing the actual edge of your health bar. I'm not sure why Bluepoint decided to make it look so vague here, and I'll bet it could easily be altered.
Just to let you know, this video never showed up in my subscription box until today (four days after upload)- love your channel, great video! Would be fun to see her take on Monster Hunter next maybe
I wish I could erase the experience of my first playthrough and do it all over again. Videos like this are as close as I'll ever come, short of a head injury.
Awesome, Tower Knight was one of my favorite bosses in that game. It really made me think I was getting how to play the game once I could beat him. Now she needs to beat the final boss of one of these games. That will be a long but interesting journey.
Holy crap, this is a delight. I feel like everybody needs to experience their inexperienced significant other playing through this series. This is both adorable and hilarious. I think doubly so because you can hear her accent getting thicker based on her emotions. My wife doesn’t have any speaking tones that give away her emotions, but she does scream like she’s being murdered whenever she encounters literally anything that doesn’t resemble a 95 year old man clumsily wielding a broken sword.

You don't need to see a boss in Bloodbourne to access the Doll. All that it requires is that you gain even a single point of insight. Most bosses give you elderich insight simply by seeing them for the first time, but if you explore Yharnam you can obtain at least one Madman's Knowledge Item, which is essentially a Humanity item, granting insight. You can then return to the Hunter's Dream and speak to her before facing any bosses. A cursory wiki search indicates there are two Madman's knowledge items in Central Yharnam, so ample opportunity to get one. Edit: ...It's been a long time, but I'm pretty sure I did have to look up where the monumental was...so yea...good note for Myazaki.
What? People thought the monumental was the statue? The cutscene shows you a door, basically saying "go here" and then you find a single child that isn't dead
I totally get it, I did the same thing looking for the Monumental, but sort of stumbled onto him after a minute or two. Also, it's remarkable how she chose all the hardest levels first. :)
I became obsessed with this game after it came out on PS3 and gained instantaneous infamy for breaking controllers (thrown through walls). It was ridiculously difficult for the time. Hindsight in a world of "soulslike" game design makes this game much easier now than it was.
I spent an hour looking for the monumental and found it completely by accident thinking i was picking up an unseen item. When the baby faced bastard looked up and started talking it legitimately made me jump in fear. It’s such a weird, obtuse setup and I kinda love it.
I personally really like Phalanx, I get that it isn't that challenging of a boss (demon's souls/DS3 having several what could be considered spectacle bosses) But its design and mechanic of the horde being the protector of the core, is cool, also the lead-up to it pitting you against several individual sheild/spear dudes I think is great teaching. There are several bosses that act similarly to this fight thoughout the Souls series, but I think this is the best. This was an enjoyable video, cute and funny
So many things i never noticed here. I’ve never once listened to npcs dialogue in these games because I don’t care about the world and am pretty much in it just for the gameplay. Miss a lot because of that. Never noticed any of the aesthetic choices like the designs on the archstones. The biggest thing though is the game encouraging you to use fire in 1-1. I play these games sword and shield and rarely alter that gameplay, so it never even crossed my mind that the game wanted me to use fire. It comes down to me not being into fantasy stuff and ignoring key aspects of the games because of that. Going to try and get more into story and world stuff in Elden Ring. Great vid!
watching this i realized demon souls remake is how i remember demon souls... i watch it going and it feels extremely familiar, probably would throw me off if i ever go back and actually play it again XD
Thank you so much for these videos. They are amongst the most interesting videos on UA-cam for me and I'm always looking forward to them. Can't wait to see what your girlfriend thinks about Elden Ring. But first I'll play it myself. :D
I'm not that surprised by a newb dying to Phalanx. It's easy to get gang-tackled if you rush in like she did. You're seeing the Phalanx through the lens of a seasoned Souls veteran.
Tower of Latria, Valley of defilement and then stonefang tunnel :') what an awful order. You should have warned her that she's basically picking the hardest areas in order.
It's funny that you mention Firelink in DS3 reminding you of the Nexus. I got the same vibe. Same with the bridge leading to the Twin Princes reminding me of Boletaria, and Irithyll Dungeon reminding me of Latria.
I find the half health system in Demon Souls interesting. People dont like being at half health untill they use a consumable or beat a boss, but an item that boosts health untill death is perfectly acceptable, even though its basically the same thing just one shows the empty part of your health bar where the boost would be
Thinking about it, Dark Souls 2 is the only soulsborne game that doesn't force you to fight a boss before letting you level up. Cause even in Dark Souls 1 you need to fight the asylum demon to escape the asylum and reach the firekeeper. But with 2 you can just blow past the tutorial caves and get on with it.
This was an amazing series and it was impressive to see your gf improve with each game, unfortunately she played all of soulsborne games so I suggest to make her play Hollow knight next it got that souls vibe i don’t know why

Broooo!!! I accidentally fell into your Videos and now i'm so thankful i found this Channel. The chemistry berween you and your girlfriend is awesome. And Very fun to watch and listen.
Great episode. Loving this series!
I love your series guys! I wish my non gamer girlfriend was willing to give it a go as well. I'd be interested to see a list of all soulsborne and sekiro games rated from most to least favourite now that Noobus played them all
Your original dark souls video hooked me into the series and I’ve been playing it since. With demons souls being my first souls game, I’m so glad you finally made this video.

You might already know this, but I just wanna say that in the original version of DeS, the reduced health is much more clear, with a blue bar covering the health you don't have, and a much more obvious graphic showing the actual edge of your health bar.
I'm not sure why Bluepoint decided to make it look so vague here, and I'll bet it could easily be altered.
Yes! I've been waiting for this. Thanks guys 😁
I really like your theory about the Nexus and Firelink Shrine!
Monty, your editing with her humor is top notch, thanks for the hours worth of quality content. “Just mine-ing his own business” 😭
I just discovered your channel and you come up with a new noobus humanus ❤️❤️❤️yay
Loved the editing of this vid - so much fun and great pacing watching the chaos unfold!
Loved that you mentioned Mega Man near the beginning and then ended it all off with a (somewhat) epic montage with Dr. Wily's theme in the background.
Ahh the game that started it all. Loved the video. You're girlfriends reactions are hilarious.
Just to let you know, this video never showed up in my subscription box until today (four days after upload)- love your channel, great video! Would be fun to see her take on Monster Hunter next maybe
AH that's annoying! Appreciate the heads up!
"Drink every time I die!"
Me: Hahaha. Haha. Aha. **Eyes whiskey** no ma'am.
Bro amazing video. I couldn't stop laughing 🤣. Thank u for the great video.
I love tge mix of undertale and deltrune music in the back ground goes perfectly with the game play and narration of the video also 10/10 video as all way absolutely ur channel 👊🏿❤
It really blended well with the hijinx going on.
Well done nubus humanus! You’ve leveled up to demon slayer humanus! Thank you both for these videos, I love them!
So proud of her progress. Cant wait for her to try Elden Ring.
Heck I can't wait to try elden ring lmao
Same! It's going to be interesting to see how the opening area will be since I suspect that more new players to the Soulsborne games will probably get started with Elden ring
@@flibjabber same dude! Can't wait to meet all the new waifus
@@WileeCoyote1516 Have you tried talking to real women. Or is this the result of your inability to do so.
UA-cam recommended me the dark souls 1 one of these, I loved it! So I spent the day bingeing all the "I made my girlfriend play" videos XD Thank you for making these videos and thanks youtube for the recommend :) Also I love the Scottish accent and accents in that area of the world XD Its seriously one of my favorites XD Now to watch some of your other videos, but maybe tomorrow, Im pretty tired from the binge watching XD And cant wait for more from this series too :) Good luck the both of you with everything IRL and internet related
Yeeeeeeessss let's gooooooo. I love all your vids but I've been waiting for this one in particular
Just came from playing Death's Door and the video starts with its OST as background music, wasn't expecting that from a Demon's Soul video xD
Yay! You're back! I missed the content and the laughs!
Happy new year for you and the noobus humanus
Love the Deaths Door background music. And your videos.
@ 24:00 My first time fighting this boss, I was one hit away from death because I figured the slimes would stop attacking once the big one was dead XD
Hindsight in a world of "soulslike" game design makes this game much easier now than it was.
omg im finally back to playing this game since quitting in 2017. can’t wait to watch this video
Damn, right on my birthday. Wonderful present, love this series and can't wait for noobus humanus plays elden ring.
I really love so much this vids! Your synergy as a couple is amazing.
Please do more vids together, and show her more gaming gems 🖤
Been looking forward to this video ever since I started watching GO NOOBUS!
I spent an hour looking for the monumental and found it completely by accident thinking i was picking up an unseen item. When the baby faced bastard looked up and started talking it legitimately made me jump in fear. It’s such a weird, obtuse setup and I kinda love it.
I swear the timing on these vids is perfect like I just finished demons souls and this comes out happened multiple times too
Just found your channel today and you've just uploaded, brilliant! 😀
I'd love to see her fight The Fell Omen, when Elden Rings drops 😄
Loving these vids man!
yep u made my day again. god I love this wholesome vids. thank you both
So many things i never noticed here.
Great vid!
Brilliant video as always 👌🏼
love the vids, great content!! keep it up
This is truly funny. What have you done to the poor girl? I'm pretty curious to see her reaction when she meets Yurt, the Slient Chief though
watching this i realized demon souls remake is how i remember demon souls... i watch it going and it feels extremely familiar, probably would throw me off if i ever go back and actually play it again XD
I knew it and I’m happy about it, good stuff man
Ooohhh glad to see you guys back! Your better half is my favorite player lol. Good luck!
She can no longer be considered a noob. She is now one of us.
Theres nothing that brings me more joy than a drunk scottish woman swearing. Great video
Thank you so much for these videos. They are amongst the most interesting videos on UA-cam for me and I'm always looking forward to them. Can't wait to see what your girlfriend thinks about Elden Ring. But first I'll play it myself. :D
"He might be the only Souls boss embarassed to be alive." *queue Pinwheel dancing in the corner*
I'm not that surprised by a newb dying to Phalanx. It's easy to get gang-tackled if you rush in like she did. You're seeing the Phalanx through the lens of a seasoned Souls veteran.
What an astonishing pair of avatars monty. I'm jaw on the floor impressed by your skills in art direction.
i really want a second act of this series where you actually give her some tips like telling her about visceral attacks in bloodborne
These videos are great, but it's noobus' accent that takes it to the next level for me, icing on the cake
These are priceless. Thank y'all so much
Tower of Latria, Valley of defilement and then stonefang tunnel :') what an awful order. You should have warned her that she's basically picking the hardest areas in order.
I really love that you put Death's Door music at the start❤️
It's funny that you mention Firelink in DS3 reminding you of the Nexus. I got the same vibe. Same with the bridge leading to the Twin Princes reminding me of Boletaria, and Irithyll Dungeon reminding me of Latria.
Love this series, I got inspired and I’m trying to convince my girlfriend to try Dark Souls 1.
I love the use of OCRemix music in the TK fight. Haha.
I find the half health system in Demon Souls interesting. People dont like being at half health untill they use a consumable or beat a boss, but an item that boosts health untill death is perfectly acceptable, even though its basically the same thing just one shows the empty part of your health bar where the boost would be
"The same way I appreciate mega-man because we got mega-man 2 afterwards" this is just perfect and I'll use it to describe dark souls from now on
These videos are my new favorite pass time on UA-cam
i was looking for this video after watching her on the other souls games. and here it finally is!
When that “Vs. Susie” came on at the Vanguard Demon 🤧
The deaths door music was a nice addition i fucking love the soundtrack to that game
"Is this game too easy?"
Monty: "Your mum's too easy."
Ha! Classic retort.
This was an amazing series and it was impressive to see your gf improve with each game, unfortunately she played all of soulsborne games so I suggest to make her play Hollow knight next it got that souls vibe i don’t know why
