No pets in the car, almost no major cooling problems. But cleaning the fan and air canals help the cooling. And remember to use your A/C all the time your battery needs it.
Does bulk charging the whole battery (of 14 banks/ 28 modules) actually work well? I did each module individually, and I would think that bulk charging would be worse/possibly damage weak cells. rather than improve them. If Prolong/bulk charging works as well as individual module charging/discharging, then that's great! After replacing bad modules, before using Prolong/bulk charging, I would think at the very least you'll want to charge all modules individually to within .05volts of each other, connect all the positive leads and (separately) connect all the negative leads so that the modules are all in parallel. After 24 hours the modules will be balanced. Then, when you reconnect, the prolong process might go better.
@@hybridsolutiondiagnostics I wouldn't agree. Wait until under 50%. When it comes time to repair/rebalance the battery (which is a big deal and you don't want to do more than every 3-4 years) better than bulk charging/that Prolong charger, it would be far better to run the charge/discharge process on the individual modules, then pair them with each other to produce pairs of about total equal mah capacity, and reassemble the pack as Jose suggests, moving the inner modules to the outside and vice versa. Don't forget to clean your hybrid fan. I also move the outer module heat sensors closer to the middle of the pack to trigger the fan earlier.

So before you did the life expectancy test you warmed up the battery, should this always be done before doing that test? And if so, would doing a life expectancy test without warning up the battery give an inaccurate result?
My 2016 Camry hybrid 75,000 miles has been getting 18 mpg for the last two months and after multiple trips to the dealer they say there is nothing wrong. I do not have any dashboard or check engine lights. I use top tier gas and always have 35-37 psi. Tires are only 6 months old and the same brand and model as when it was new. Yes we use the air conditioner year round in Arizona. Question is could it be the battery?
@@hybridsolutiondiagnostics in your videos you talk about how it is not possible to fix a bad battery only twmporarily. Since I don’t have a code does this mean that if I service the battery it will work for a lot longer than a bad battery? Or does this mean it’s time to just replace it?
I'm curious about how long do you expect that particular battery to last. I am debating between replacing mine, in a 2009 Prius, with either a rebuilt or a new one. I was quoted today $750 to replace with a rebuilt. I have not checked the cost of a new one (installed) yet. The rebuilt will have a 3 month warranty. I am curious why you call it reconditioning when you replaced 7 modules? Maybe that is a service/marketing term? I understand replacing those middle cells since the temps get higher there. Personally, I would not call it reconditioning. I believe there are other cell chemistries where reconditioning can bring the cells back to a better capacity, but not this type of chemistry. The extra capacity you observed was mostly due to replacing the middle cells with better cells. 25% increase is good, so may help this customer for a while, but it did not recondition all the cells to work better. The lowest capacity cell will be the limiting factor.
He replaced "7 of the worst modules". And the reason the overall life expectancy goes up is because if there is 1 faulty module, the battery pack will give you a false overall life expectancy. All the other modules will be limited by the one bad module. I went from 4% life expectancy to 89% by changing out 4 bad modules. And yes, cycling the batteries does help the capacity also. Jose, going back to my 2015 3GEN NiMH w/100k (long post) please help me on this one, I never had error codes, triangle or MIL, all stock. I decided to investigate the HV battery because I noticed when under heavy acceleration, the car accelerates well, no power loss or anything but looking at the energy flow (the little arrows flowing on the display) I see the generator is actually charging the battery pack, the wheels are being pushed by the ICE and the electric motor receiving current from the generator instead of the battery while the HV battery is receiving power from the generator as well! so charging instead of discharging? When comparing this to my GEN4, it operates differently, under heavy acceleration, the electric motor pushing the car with current from the battery, so no charging, along the ICE, so GEN3 is running in parallel yes, but what’s the point of the battery if the ICE is doing all the heavy lifting, the battery pack does push the motor when accelerating gradually, but it will revert back to charging if you demand heavier throttle. I’m not sure if this is a normal behavior for GEN3 that’s improved in GEN4. It's worth noticing that this happens even when the battery meter reads 6, 7 bars, so it’s not that the SoC is low to demand charge, also the 12v batt is new. I watched some YT videos where they do 0-60 times on this generation, and I see their arrows going to from the battery to the motor instead of charging the battery so I suspect something is up with my GEN3, -thoughts? DR PRIUS results life expectancy was 54.40% with a “weak block #7 detected" is this accurate? Yet no lights on the dash, the test didn’t last the 800s of course. The full battery test (where you accelerate and stop fast) throw a “battery running warm” but everything else passed, I do notice the middle temp sensor is sometimes 7 to 9F higher. TechStream shows NO codes under ICE or Hybrid control, nor freeze frame either. HV cooling fan and filter are clean but the battery itself never had any maintenance before. Because of all this and the temp warning I plan on cleaning the busbars using your video tutorial, and perhaps rotate the modules as you recommend, but just rotating, I plan to NO messing with charging, discharging, or balancing due to lack of experience myslef, can I just rotate the modules without rebalancing? Or rebalancing is a must when changing positions? if rotating alone is bad, then again no. Sorry for the long post and the multiple questions, hopefully you can help me with some information? The charging behavior under heavy acceleration while MG2 getting power form the ICE instead of HV batt is making me scratch my head because technically the HV battery is not being used under full throttle, so the car runs in "parallel" with no HV batt assistance? I'm not the main driver for the GEN3, and perhaps it was this way since I purcahsed with 88k (second owner) I never paid attention to the energy flow until I got my GEN4 brand new and spotted the difference. Thanks for all you do by teaching us and I really appreciate your feedback.

I love the educational videos you are doing. Would you be able to explain how to connect the prolong charger ? Does the battery need to be fully functional when charging with the prolong charger? Does the orange breaker need to be in the on position?
Keep your money to buy new Battery pack from Toyota and install it yourself for about $2000. Don't waste your money on false hope of Prolong device. The chemistry and aging of the electrodes LaNi8 is not reversible. You can reduce the memory effect but will not cure aging battery problems. Keep the car under the shade/garage, AC always on and drive regularly with clean battery vent will guarantee the battery last 15 years or more. All Hybrid in UK/Ireland has 15 years unlimited miles because of mild weather there.
@@joseramonherreramendoza9260 yes, many tried reconditioning and never last long enough. May be enough before you trade it in to dealership in few months.
Great question 👋😎... the only way to savely charge the battery should be from 0 to 0.2 amps in pulses for NOT MORE THAN 48 HOURS with all modules assembled on the frame of course or they will swell and go bad ( careful with this ☝️😎), the reason is because they produce heat after charged... then you can now mount the modules in your balancer for 48 hours for a full balance 👋😎
I have a question about doing this with the 2nd generation battery where the fan is located in the car. Is it best to reinstall the battery before doing the charging or can i use a fan to keep the pack cool? Im new to this game and want to learn as much as possible before attempting it.
I'm showing 230 volts dc now. After reconditioning. First try no TRIANGLE. But the engine starts imedetly/runs 30 sec shuts off. Dash shows 3 bars. Today/tried again. Found out the pack shows 230V? Now I've got red TRIANGLE? And already light/the engine didnt start so/I put it in reverse/ backed 15 feet /engine started? Ran 30 sec.went dead. Maybe 230 is too high. I could bleed some off? I've read the dash isnt accurate ot still reads half way/4 bars

Weaker cells will have increased in their internal resistance value and if you identify the culprit/s then you should get the theoretical maximum capacity if and when all the cells have IR values as close as possible and the pack should stay in balance. I haven't worked on hybrid batteries but know my lithium-ion cells in ebike batteries. I just ordered a Honda Jazz hybrid battery from ebay and will be tearing it down including the BMS. What is confusing me is even an ebike battery (whatever its voltage and Ah) will have a BMS that will have cell balancing. I can't imagine that this crucial function of a BMS is not available for a hybrid battery. Also would like to say a lithium-ion cell's storage voltage is 3.6V and maximum charge voltage is 4.20V. If you are measuring 8.50V, meaning each cell is made up of 2 cells in series then what guarantee is there that individual cells are in balance in the first place. Unless I am mistaken that each cell is not made up of 2 lithium ion cells connected in series. Can you confirm the cells are measuring around 7.20V at half charge and 8.40V at full charge. Do you have a datasheet for the cells?

Actually, you completely CAN recondition a bad hybrid battery. Many many of us older Prius drivers have successfully done it ourselves or paid for good rebuilt batteries, which can cost $500-1500 in the aftermarket. For DIY, I did it two years ago on a 2004 Prius that had failed after 16 years with the red triangle of death. The car was at 162K, now 173K. Two years later the battery is still testing in the 83% range, I am happy. I hope to get another 2 years before needing to do the process again. The car was at 162K, now 173K. The process is complex, though not difficult. If you pull the bad modules, cycle charge the OK ones, pair the modules well, rebalance your reinstalled HV battery will absolutely get you in the 90-100% capacity range (testing with the Dr Prius life expectancy test).
@@cawag98 yes indeed, but the bad modules you have to replace them... thats the point... they will simply wont match with the good module so balance won't last much...

hi i have a kia optima 2013 with a lipo hybrid battery. where would i buy a full set brand new. instead of the single modules from ebay. please and thank you
Would it be possible to also put Trinidad somewhere so when persons search they can find this awesome content

Where can I buy a 2014 fielder hybrid battery
Directly with me 👋😎
Jose, going back to my 2015 3GEN NiMH w/100k (long post) please help me on this one, I never had error codes, triangle or MIL, all stock.
What’s the cost of the hybrid battery
At the moment in UK is around £1,500 from hybrid mechanic garage.
POA80 reconditioned battery replacement twice because after two weeks recon battery that was doing well died.
Yes, recondition won't fix a bad battery at all.
Where do you get those copper plate pack? I asked Toyota dealer and they said they don't sell them separately.

Ive got a RS771-7730 LED driver that put out 257 v DC @350mA I have used this to charge my Prius 2010 Hybrid drive battery I know the total voltage can go up to 230 -240 v dc Is the method I'm using ok the voltage is a little higher.? your thoughts will be appreciated.DB
Should work just fine... jist make sure do not exceed long time after full charge and prober ventilation to disipate heat
Yes thankyou I use a 250v hair dryer to blow cold air through the intake. Thankyou for your fast reply I'm in the UK I just love your UA-cam channel
What is the max top voltage for 2010 prius
I love the educational videos you are doing. Would you be able to explain how to connect the prolong charger ? Does the battery need to be fully functional when charging with the prolong charger? Does the orange breaker need to be in the on position?
Hi and thank you for your comment.. that video is coming very soon...
@@rondhole yes indeed... replacing the battery it is always the very best solution...
@@joseramonherreramendoza9260 yes, many tried reconditioning and never last long enough. May be enough before you trade it in to dealership in few months.

What your location please?
i still confused, so how do i know which cell i need to replace
Shouldn’t you have performed a three cycle charge and discharge to fully balance the battery pack.
No, if you do that to an umbalanced in capacity battery, it will for sure go worst...
Does it burn more gas with a bad hybrid battery?
That is correct ✅
Ok so charger has to charge up a . Zero one and .02 amp rate to charger for 24-48 hours after equally discharging???
Great question 👋😎... the only way to savely charge the battery should be from 0 to 0.2 amps in pulses for NOT MORE THAN 48 HOURS with all modules assembled on the frame of course or they will swell and go bad ( careful with this ☝️😎), the reason is because they produce heat after charged... then you can now mount the modules in your balancer for 48 hours for a full balance 👋😎
That car should still be under warranty

Isn't there a "charge balancer" that you can use to extend the health of hybrid batteries?
how heavy is that battery
I have a question about doing this with the 2nd generation battery where the fan is located in the car. Is it best to reinstall the battery before doing the charging or can i use a fan to keep the pack cool? Im new to this game and want to learn as much as possible before attempting it.
Yes... use it in a cool room with a normal fan 👋😎👋😎
No my friend it is not that simple... but it is obvious that your battery is in very bad condition...
Wach the video till the very end...

Ok will do.Maybe I should give this car away and try and get to a beach somewhere with nice 3 foot waves!

How can we care for our hybrid cars to extend the battery life?
Check our tutorial hybrid battery servicing...
good video and good experiment.. but one thing u didnt do..
u didnt charge and discharge the (rebuilt) battery pack.. to try and restore lost usable battery and capacity..
Thank you for your comment. Indeed i did not cycle the battery pack because if you do so, then the strongest modules will become too strong compare to the weak ones and then the battery would become worst unbalanced....
@@hybridsolutiondiagnostics ur are the pro here and im not trying to discredit you but the whole point of charging and discharging is to balance all the cells.. maybe its not possible but this is what im trying to find out the answers to
@@prawnstar502 yes of course cycling the battery modules will restore... the problem are the weak cells, they wont restor capacity even if you cycle then...

Bro can the cells replaceable
Hi nice video but I noticed 2 or 3 problems. 1. that car has the steering wheel on the wrong side of the car. Is the gas pedal and brake pedal on the wrong side too? 2. You were driving on the wrong side of the road. 3. Well I am thinking instead of doing all of that I wonder if you would of just cleaned the old rust parts only and put back together I kinda bet you would have gotten the same 66% result? What you think? I'm from California USA. Also since I got you here and everyone else could you please tell me how much it would cost to rent an apartment or condo on top of the tallest building in your country? or how much it cost to buy it? Thanks in advance for anyone that will reply to me cause I want to visit your country one day soon. But first I need this information.
Toyota updated battery in 2018 or 2016 am i right ...
Where is part 2 of this?
Is reconditioning and rebuilding battery cell the same thing?
@Nikolai which is better
Recently, after 7 years my car got the p080 code with the engine sensor always turned on in Yellow color. Are you an indipendent toyota repair ? I don't know how to solve this problem.
Watch the complete video then you will know the problem
@@hybridsolutiondiagnostics Do you know if the bad battery and the p080 code is also the cause another problem or maybe a defect of my Toyota, is that of "the random petrol engine accelerations" that occurs when I drive without press the gas pedal ?

@@hybridsolutiondiagnostics Ah real nice 👍🏽🙂
@@hybridsolutiondiagnostics what does with “proper maintenance” mean?
I dont abuse my car and drive it 10,000 miles per year.
If you catch it early and change one bad cell, would that work?
Actually if you service the battery this won't happen, a new video about that is coming... thank you for your comment... like and subscribe.
Weaker cells will have increased in their internal resistance value and if you identify the culprit/s then you should get the theoretical maximum capacity if and when all the cells have IR values as close as possible and the pack should stay in balance. I haven't worked on hybrid batteries but know my lithium-ion cells
in ebike batteries. I just ordered a Honda Jazz hybrid battery from ebay and will be tearing it down including the BMS. What is confusing me is even an ebike
battery (whatever its voltage and Ah) will have a BMS that will have cell balancing. I can't imagine that this crucial function of a BMS is not available for a
hybrid battery. Also would like to say a lithium-ion cell's storage voltage is 3.6V and maximum charge voltage is 4.20V. If you are measuring 8.50V, meaning
each cell is made up of 2 cells in series then what guarantee is there that individual cells are in balance in the first place. Unless I am mistaken that each
cell is not made up of 2 lithium ion cells connected in series. Can you confirm the cells are measuring around 7.20V at half charge and 8.40V at full charge.
Do you have a datasheet for the cells?
The main point is. YOU CAN'T RECONDITION A BAD HYBRID BATTERY... It won't fix it...
Bet? U serious? 🤣... im glad you are a smart man and fix bad batteries... great for you ☝😎☝😎 and thank you for your comment
@@randyramesh8397 i would really love to see a video fixing those bad batteries as you said ☝😎☝😎
@@randyramesh8397 Questions on what to do after you have made the swap for a reconditioned battery. Looking for exact steps 🤔 These videos aren't clear or step by step before and after.
Hybrid battery dies quickly if you use the economy mode or the power mode or the EV mode.Avoid these things.
So which one is better?
that is true
Power mode EV mode are battery killer. Reverse movement reaches 125Amps to uphill
replacing cells, as u did, means that this wasn't just reconditioning. But thanks all the same.
Because reconditioning won't ever fix a bad module...
He didn’t replace the bad batteries. He only moved their positions
❤🎉
2015 and 75 k kilometres… that is a short life for the battery????
There is a technical reason for this... stay tune for a new episode releasing hopefully today... and you will find your answer
I've gotten modules from 4500mha to 6000mha by cycling them.
So I dont know what the heck you guys mean by you can't recondition a battery....
