Watched the video and had the same problem with the nut top of the shock. Being that the new shock comes with a new nut I trIed my method and used a reciprocating saw cut the shaft of the shock just above the frame. Start to finish 20 minutes later. Hope this helps

I just followed the factory service manual. Rear shocks are fun, easy even... but front coilovers are interesting to put together your first time. Harbor Freight sells decent spring compressors though. Remember, always keep your spring bottoms toward the rear of the vehicle!

Just finished this up on my 2014 FJ Cruiser. Pretty much followed the procedure here, except for the top nut removal. I doubt that you will have any luck at all with vice grips trying to hold the shaft from rotating while trying to remove that nut, just like what you see here. I even tried two sets of vice grips.
IMHO, the easiest way to get this done is to just get a sawzall and a metal cutting blade. Just cut through the rubber damper and shaft. Takes only about one minute. No heat to worry about. Then the shock will drop out. On installation, just be very careful to follow the shock makers instructions on getting all of the right pieces in the right orientation.

I just installed some but I dont have a lift and just jacked it up from the differential. I had to compress the shock to get it in place.

    Great mechanic
I noticed but never criticize because it’s NOT critical.
    Job complete. Handy locking players.
You helped the less knowledgeable. Thx

Why the extension and compression of the new shock 3-5 times? Mixing the gases? I don't see anything in the shock literature that states to do that. Bilstein states "be sure to lower the vehicle such that its full weight is on the suspension prior to fully tightening the fasteners." Does the A1 new shock not require that?
