I was 15 and the White Album had just come out. My father and I were out buying me my first stereo system. (so exciting!) In the store, there was a big display rack of the album. Despite the fact that he just laid out a pretty penny for the stereo, I begged him to buy me the album too. As all Beatles albums were top tier price and this was a double album, it was the most expensive album ever....about $12 as I recall, which was a lot in 1968. It took a lot of begging but my father gave in (such a great dad). When we got home, I set up the stereo and must have listened to that album a dozen times in the first day or two. Like every new Beatles album, it was pure delight...... but double so. I remember that day like it was yesterday.

"Dear Prudence" created a sonic model for pop songs that still resonates today. The influence of this song can be heard in dozens of pop and rock songs from the 1980's and 1990's.
I was one of those who waited/anticipated for the Beatles next album and I bought the White Album the first day it was in the store. The excitement of hearing this tremendous album, 30 amazing songs a collection I still regard as my go to album to this day. I have many different copies of the album since and a promo poster as part of the stand up display that held the album is in my collection. I always say thank goodness I was born in the Beatles era and got to see and hear them at the pivotal time. My life has centered around them and I met my wife because of them and many other interesting stories I can tell. Beatles are one and only and never ever will there be anything like them again. Thanks for reading if you got this far !!! Cimdy, I think I listened to all your Beatles reactions and love them all !
I’m thoroughly enjoying your discovery of, in my opinion, the greatest band of all time. So I discovered them about 1979, I was 16. As I bought each album, I realized how utterly diverse their songs were, the high quality of the performance and recording of each song, and the good spirit, humor, and positivity of their message. I envy you in that you’ll continue to be amazed as you dig deeper. Thanks for spreading their good word and I’ll continue to be impressed with how you break it down and give intelligent insight into these songs after hearing them for the first time. You have wonderful taste in music! Stay Fab!
Getting the White Album at the end of 1968 was like being invited to experience a banquet of the most exquisite offerings. As for "Dear Prudence": it was a magical sound then, as well as, today ... now hearing in lockdown, makes it still relevant, endearing, encouraging, promising and uplifting.
This a perfect 3 minute song! Donovan, the 1960's singer, taught John this finger picking style when they were all in India. Prudence was the actress Mia Farrow's sister, who was so engrossed in meditation that she would never leave her room. John wrote this song for her. They were assigned to a meditation group together but she took it way seriously! One of my John Lennon favorites!
CimdyStyle N'anya How did it feel back then? First of all, at that time and for the four previous years, it seemed like everyone was always breathlessly awaiting their next 'thing', and it was amazing when they just threw away the entire concept of advertising and artwork when the plain white album came out, NO ONE expected THAT, and of course they didn't NEED cover photo art because everyone in the world KNEW who The Beatles WERE, but INSIDE were TWO records, THAT was a brand new 'thing' and made EVERYONE happy to get TWICE as much music, PLUS it had four 8" X 10" glossy photos (as their hair had continued to grow ever longer each year) inside AND a poster, so everyone had the photos and poster on their walls after that. As for the music, well as you know it was mind-blowingly wonderful as usual, especially 'revolutionary' was the 17 minute long sound collage called Revolution #9, and the song Revolution itself which also came out in an up-tempo electrified rockin' performance on film (see it on UA-cam), that song was Lennon's 'reply' to the 'revolutionary' extremism of the time (see the 1968 Chicago Democrat Convention protest organized by Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin, both of whom had met Lennon in New York, the Chicago 8 trial afterward was a major news event also). Every song was popular, despite being so 'different' from the 'norm'. '.
This is a nice music, yeah some people like to have a particular sound as their signature but the Beatles is diversify in their sound, OMG that strings on the guitar is something else.. remind me when I was in my university days, in school my class mate will not allow me hear word with stings for those majoring in strings , yeah I studied music in school but am not practicing for some reasons. But still good at music and sounds. Great reaction. 😘
This isn't a widely known song of theirs but it's one of my favourite Beatles tracks Paul McCartney also did the drums as Ringo had stormed out of the Beatles at that time
That was a beautiful song, like a playful song dedicated to Prudence. I like the song. I definitely wasn't around at their time lol, but Cimdy, as you react to their songs, I got to hear a lot of their songs that I didn't know before. They were good.
I got the White Album for Christmas in 1968. I had already heard a lot of it on radio. In those days we didnt have FM album rock stations. It was all AM top 40. I live in NC but at night I could pick up a Chicago station that was playing songs from the new Beatles album the week it came out. But there was nothing like having the actual article in my hands Christmas morning and putting it on the turntable the first time
Hi again Cimdy. I Love this song so much. I'm not sure why, but it holds a special place in my heart. Oh, I read somewhere that it was Prudence who "Came In Through the Bathroom Window." I can't swear that this is true, but I did read this somewhere so, maybe your mystery is solved, huh? Hope so. Keep Smiling...
I was trying to work out where I've heard the sun is out the sky is blue , then it came to me in a flash . It's from Buddy Holly's song Raining In My Heart . He was an Inspiration to the Beatles
Elemental. Spare. Guitar driven. And yet hypnotic in intensity, mysteriousness, and atmospherics: as always, the Beatles were MILES and decades ahead of the competition. Absolutely brilliant travis fingerpicking guitar performances by John Lennon and George Harrison's tracked guitars replace orchestras and sonic effects of their just ended psychedelic period (Revolver -- Magical Mystery Tour) , giving both Dear Prudence and the entire album an "organic," Beatles-centric sound, i.e., it's the BAND of four, John, Paul, George, and Ringo, and not the phalanxes of orchestral players and special effects engineers of their psychedelic/Baroque era of late 1965-1967. George Harrison's soloing here not only signals the arrival of classic late Beatles-era Harrison stylings--fluid,elegant, bluesy, octative-jumping and always strikingly narrative driven--but also one of his most scintillating and moving to date. Harrison's guitar now takes a distinctive, particular "voice." What a band.
Love Paul's bass. On the McCartney 321 documentary currently on Hulu, Paul says this was written for Prudence Farrow, Mia's daughter, who shut herself up in her house. Depression or something.
This is my favorite song in the world, I just love the lyrics, the singing, playing and incredible arrangement. There's a video called Deconstructing Dear Prudence that isolates the instruments so you can hear better what each is doing. For example the bass line in each of the 3 verses is different. Paul does an excellent job of taking over on drums while Ringo was away. I love how the song fades in and fades out with the acoustic guitar, John picking strings which he learned in India from Scottish pop star Donovan (you really need to check out his songs, he's amazing, in the '60s he was magical) like a cloud or a feather touching down briefly then taking off again. It starts simply with guitar and bass, drums are added and tambourine. With the 2nd verse there are background vocals added, at the climax of the song we get electric guitar and piano and the lyrics become a declaration, "THE SUN IS UP, THE SKY IS BLUE, IT'S BEAUTIFUL AND SO ARE YOU, DEAR PRUDENCE." Donovan songs: Sunshine Superman, Season of the Witch, Museum, Mellow Yellow, There Is a Mountain, Wear Your Love Like Heaven, Hurdy Gurdy Man, Jennifer Juniper, Atlantis
Yes prudence was Mia farrow I’ve got those two albums at 1972 when I graduated from my school and there’s two albums it was worth a single night listening all the songs on were incredibly diverse

Thanks Cimdy Style, for reacting to this one from John. Weaving in a woman's beauty with the fine-ness of the new day. Gotta' love the unwavering guitar melody climbing up and down and all around -- soon followed by other guitars accenting and counter-pointing while The Beatles perform their signature spot-on harmonies to push the emotion. Truly breath-taking in simplicity yet making the most of each note ...
Paul's melodic bassline in this song is awesome! I wonder if his innovative bass playing is a bit underrated because he was such an amazing siger-songwriter... Don't get me worng, he does get praise for his bass playing but not nearly as much as his songwriting skills.
I was always ecstatic whenever a new Beatles LP was released. The White Album wasn't a concept album. It was individual songs by each of the Beatles, and even bits of songs that were never finished.
