    I'm 6'2" and dislike bending down when entering vehicles (i.e. ducking my head) -- Trax nicely accommodates me in this regard. Next, this whole business about 'soft touch plastics' that's all the rage in just about every car review video I've seen isn't an issue for me - I'm not really touching my plastics very much, and during those few seconds that i do, that they be squishy doesn't hold much importance. The seat feels quite good, including in the sense of supporting thighs at the right angle (for me), and I like the power lumbar.

    Bought my 2015 Trax LT AWD used for a terrific price. Lived with it for a couple of years now and have no complaints aside for longing 25 more hp. I know it is essentially a purse with AWD. Lol I am a middle aged dad secure in my masculinity.
    I don't care much what it looks like. I've had my cool cars/trucks and have more important things to spend my money on these days. Hard plastic is easier to clean and does not crack like that soft touch BS. I pick without the infotainment center. One less thing to break down and stereo and my phone combine to do all the same tasks anyway. AWD is a necessity where I live. The traction and stability control are effective and both can be disabled if need be. Great in the snow. Terrific fuel economy, perfect amount of room for a daily driver and vacation car for a small family.
    If I could go back in time I might get an Encore however I would worry more about things breaking or wearing in the interior. The Trax is good enough to care about but simple enough not to worry about.
    Infotainment centers are meh. Lol

    The Trax is obviously marketed for younger buyers on a budget, or maybe for those not concerned with vehicle styling. The Jeep Renegade is much more polarizing in the styling department--I usually like Jeeps, but I find the Renegade to be awkward-looking...like someone took a Nissan Cube, raised it and slapped some Jeep styling cues on it.

      S Mayer I think the Jeep Renegade looks alright, but it’s twin from Fiat (the Fiat 500X) looks a little bit better in my opinion. Although I like both of those cars.
      As for the GM Subcompact SUV twins, I prefer the Buick version, the Buick Encore. Not because I actually drive a 2015 Buick Encore, but also because the amount of features the Encore has that the Trax doesn’t have and also because of the gauges. I think the gauges in the Encore look more mature and better looking than the gauges in the Trax, and the interior in the Encore is also nicer too, especially if you get the Light Brown/Dark Brown Color Combo Interior, which my Encore has. The Trax doesn’t even have any side mirror LED turn signals like the Encore does, which is interesting...
      Although I think the exterior designs on both the Trax and the Encore are great and I think the Trax is a great car to drive, just like the Encore, and I can see why someone would like to buy one or the other. The Encore is a great driving vehicle overall, and I think the Trax is the same way as well.

      Penelope416, You might want to do a little research on reliability data before spending your hard-earned money on a re-badged Daewoo. You might also want to ask yourself whether you really want a vehicle with turbocharged engine which typically will require more maintenance and offer a shorter lifespan than a naturally aspirated engine.

    • @kens97sto171
      @kens97sto171 9 років тому +1

      Desperate4Attention by the way. That 1.4 turbo engine is built here in the USA, cast iron block, and has been in use for several years now. Been in the Cruze for a LONG time. I deliver frieght into the GM foundry that casts and machines the 1.4 engine.

    • @Trades46
      @Trades46 9 років тому +3

      Penelope416 I've personally driven the Encore and so did my parents. They loved its features, luxurious design, great fuel economy and AWD. I enjoyed driving it too; it felt toss-able, braking & gearshifts are great as well. What stopped us from getting one is engine. The 1.4T is peppy around town, but when loaded with 4 adults and merging on highway it feels taxed. I guess that's where the fuel economy benefits from, if at the expense of adequate power.As for a 'rebadged Daewoo', I trust Korean built products over locally built 'small cars' GM used to make (e.g. Sunfire & Cavalier). The Cruze is also Daewoo designed and I personally think it is a better built car than the Focus.

    I look forward to your future reviews and comparisons of this emerging sub-compact crossover segment. You forgot to mention the Mazda CX-3! My guess is that the Juke and CX-3 will be the best in on-road handling, the Renegade will be tops at off-roading, while the HRV and Renegade will have the best cargo capacity and comfort. It's a shame that some of the GM vehicles like the Suburban and Volt have that lower front bumper rubber strip for fuel efficiency, since limits ground clearance, and a pain getting on and off driveways. Interesting storage tricks in the Trax, and how it's not too bad for child seats and taller passengers. Very impressive mpg. Great videos as always.

    I have a 15 trax and I love it ❤ it’s perfect for someone like me who is a short person. Easy to drive great on gas mileage only complaint I would have is not having the console in the middle but other that I love my trax and it’s my very first car bought in march for a very reasonable price. Before I bought it and even found out about the trax I was dead set on buying the cruze I’m glad I didn’t because I later found out that Chevy discontinued the cruze

    Alex. My wife and I are looking at new cars. My wife loves you and stands on every word/review of yours. And I agree with her. You have covered all the crossovers we are looking at except the Chevy Traverse and the Chevy Equinox. (But we are mostly interested in the Traverse ). I have a friend who is a Chevy dealer/salesman and wants to help us out as he knows we are on a fixed income and need to save as much as we can on this. But she won't consider it without your review, lol Do you have one and could you share it with me. Thank you.

    • @davidfasnacht2123
      @davidfasnacht2123 9 років тому

      David Fasnacht I correct myself on a couple of things. She wont consider it with out your approval, lol The Equinox, we heard was nicknamed "Frankincar" because it had many things wrong with it. But in reading reports, that seemed to be a few years back, the first couple years after it was introduced. From what I am reading, they have addressed all the issues and corrected them really well. We are looking to trade every 3 ( ? ) years, so not looking for a car that is going to last us 20 + years. We also like the Traverse for it's size as we sometimes help drive on Church/group activities. I guess, in short, since we have driven each and love both. What would you say about them as far as mechanics?

Since the Trax has already got some refreshment both in the looks and in the features, do you think it's a good idea to do a review on the 2017 facelift Trax, to put it in a fair competition with the rest of the competitor? This model is definitely cannot stand against the newer kids on the block. I do really curious about your opinion on the facelift Trax. Many thanks.

    I like Trax. Have test driven small hatchbacks and these mini-utes. I do like the Honda HRV. In just personal test, I like the looks of the Trax better and the simplicity of the console better. Now the dilemma. The Chevy dealer is offering great discounts (probably not a good sign) and so a LS model with AWD is about $1500 less than a HRV with AWD. The Trax LS however has no cruise control (I don't do a lot of highway driving). I love the storage of both vehicles. I was looking at subcompacts to start and now am thinking of moving up to AWD. So the Trax is pushing my limits but is it worth it? The HRV is beyond what I can do now and no one around here has the LX version anyway. So that means further waiting. I have driven a Trax about three times and its tall ride and short length have made it fun. I have parked and u-turned it and it was easy. So, is an HRV worth the wait in comparison?

    • @USFanLovesMinHo
      @USFanLovesMinHo 9 років тому +2

      Patrick Kelley I wouldn't let discounts stop you, since all dealerships selling any brand will have discounts from time to time, especially during certain times of the year when cars in general do not sell well.

    Very cogent analysis Alex. Considering the Trax is assembled by very low paid workers in Mexico there is absolutely no excuse for the relatively high price point. The Soul, Encore and Renegade are made in South Korea or Italy by much better paid workers but cost the same or less. GM is moving as many jobs, as quickly as it can, to low-wage Mexico while passing along NONE of the savings to the shrinking American and Canadian middle class who bailed it out in the first place. That is a low, down and dirty shame.

    The sub compact SUVs( trax, HRV, Renegande) should be priced just around 1000$ more than the sub compact hatch. That will start making people think when they are going for sub compact hatch and compact sedan. By pricing it very high they are competing with Compact SUVs and midsize sedans. Its a very difficult market to get entry as there is a hell lot of competition there. Whats your take Alex?

People who want a vehicle to get from A to B. Obviously not for someone who drives a lot. The same goes for the Suzuki Swift. After an hour, your back hurts. It's a city car for short trips.

    I don't get why car manufacturers of all brands are including the manual option on the gear. If I want manual, then that is what I would buy (cheaper). Plus there is no clutch to push, so it just seems stupid.

      because it give you the convenience of an automatic, but still have the ability to select the appropriate gear, especially on steep down grades. in mountain states we appreciate manual modes and forced induction.

    Price? Try to blame union workers on this one. It's a Holden and an Opel and a cheaper version of a Buick. Miss my slob gas thirsty 63' LeSabre. So fast and smooth.

      I can feel the edges of the seats in my 2x rear in the Trax, but it works ☺️ We just leased one and I'm so happy. Buick interiors are much cushier, didn't realize they were so close in price. Maybe Buick next time, but we are really happy with the Trax so far.

    I thought the trax had too many hard plastics. A low end outlander will kill this vehicle. And the honda h-rv will kill them all!

    Hi Alex, I rented Chevy Trax last year when vacationing in Maine and New Hampshire. I think you are being very generous in this review. The interior screams CHEAP. Everything is hard - and I mean hard edgy - wherever you touch, including your legs. The engine was anemic and had to rev up like crazy to accelerate. Above 75 mph it felt like a tin can on wheels. On wet pavement lack of traction was scary.
    Yes, it got good gas mileage. And no, thanks.

    i go to see trax by my eye and have test drive it is good looking car but....i think that GM sets high price and get more profit than its quality, not powerful engine, not good fuel consumption effeciency the intorior material is hard cheap plastic if compare to soul it has good interior material its price is cheaper than trax those are poor point of trax if GM installs more powerful engine, good quality interior material like Kia soul i will buy it

    The takeaway is a trend we've seen before - a hollowing out of the middle of the car market. Nobody buys the middle of the range. Look at the way the Chevy Spark is destroying sales of the Chevy Sonic. Consumers seem to either want it very cheap, or very nice. If you wanted a hatchback, you'd either buy a stripper Ford Fiesta, or a platinum Focus, but probably nothing in between. In this segment, you'd compare the Soul and the Buick. I suspect this is because it isn't the price of a new car that's the problem, it's the credit. If you have credit, a $200 payment isn't much different than a $300 payment. But if you don't have credit, the very concept of buying a car new is off the table. If you look at the payment as a percentage of income, it's MUCH smaller today than it was in decades past. If credit was loose, people would routinely buy 70 and 80k cars. But instead they buy 5k cars at buy-here-pay-here places. The selection of cars reflects this hollowing out of the middle of society.

    • @1guyin10
      @1guyin10 9 років тому

      There is a trend going on there. You see things selling well like the GMC Denali models and on the other end things like the Nissan Versa. I saw the same thing on the lots when I was looking for a vehicle last year. I could find the model with every option box checked and also the base model. What I wanted was more of a mid-level model, but I would have had to order it to get it. There was nothing with mid-level equipment on any lot within 1,000 miles of me. I purchased a base model instead.

      @mountainhobo 9 років тому +1

      "The selection of cars reflects this hollowing out of the middle of society." -- The best selling cars in the US are Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. You do not get any more "middle" than that.

    • @kipamore
      @kipamore 9 років тому

      mountainhobo You have a point, but the bestselling car in America is actually the F150. Not a cheap proposition. But I think if you look at the actual range of the Camry and Accord, I bet they sell a lot more loaded versions of each than strippers, and I bet there isn't a lot of midrange optioned cars selling. A fully loaded Accord is..what...$34,000 or something crazy like that?

    • @mountainhobo
      @mountainhobo 9 років тому

      ***** Trucks have their own reasons for selling. They are necessary tools for craftsmen, farmers, etc. As for the best selling Camry, the LE and SE sell well over 80%. LE is the low end, SE the "sporty" version of LE (read "stiffer suspension, sharper steering") but still low end on the price scale. The higher end XLE sell relatively poorly. That's because LE and SE offer what most people need, without extra frills. I don't know enough about Accord, but I know that their 2.4 l version sells many times more than their V6, and the difference in interior is relatively minor, and the slight improvement in performance for V6 commands significant price increase.

    • @kipamore
      @kipamore 9 років тому

      You are probably right about the trim levels. But do you agree with my thesis? I was under the impression that transaction prices (read as trim and frills) are sharply rising while income is not. I guess I could make my argument another way; if people who buy new cars were truly interested in value, then why are the Camry and Accord the best sellers. Those are fairly high up the range of all cars. People should be lining up to buy a 16k Sonic or a 13k Mirage, but they aren't. Could we agree that in general, cheap cars don't sell. The Fiat, the Sonic/Spark, the Corolla/Civic should be outselling the Camry/Accord/F150.
      My point is that owning a new car isn't contingent on paying for it, it's contingent on credit. Those who have good credit are affluent enough to buy expensive cars. But there's a vast amount of people who have adequate income to afford a car, but not the credit. This importance of credit helps to hollow out the middle class, and that hollowing out is reflected in the sales of new cars - only those with credit can afford to buy, and they buy fancy.

    Chevy is known for making really shitty quality products and then tacking on a high premium price tag. I'm looking to buy a Trax but I won't buy new because I don't want to be ripped off. I'll get a used one from an owner or something. I can't wait for GM to go out of business again. No bailouts this time.

      Omg shut up, not my fault Chevy makes crappy cars and and then sells them for a premium price. I do like the Trax but it is too overpriced for the quality Im getting. And just because someone doesnt like Chevy doesnt mean they ar anti-american so go to hell. I love Ford almost bought a Fiesta but I felt cramped in it. I want a small crossover and Ford doesnt have any I like yet. GM should go out of business they arent keeping up with the Competiion.
