      I bought a plain jane LS FWD in 2016. Still have it. BUT the old lady wants some thing in style now. But it is a FWD, and like any FWD it eats front tires.
      But the the 45,000 mile service costs as much as a set of four tires for it. Not going to happen in 2022. But $15 of regular is a 1/2 tank in 2022.

    Man, THIS is the review I've been looking for - Been combing through UA-cam and finally someone just lays it all out on the table for what this car can do/what it offers without any apparent bias.

    This very well-spoken man is the Best Car reviewer. No hint of bias and everything he said was really useful information. Many other car reviewers sound like they're reading off the car manufacturer PR promotional material.

    I am a happy 2019 Trax LT AWD owner (purchased new for 19K on 10/19) but I do have low miles on it.
    I thought the review was very fair the Trax is a nice, functional, and safe car.
    When I purchased my Trax at the time no other car in the category had better crash protection most were not as good.
    I just used it to transport a combination/storm door.
    My model has 4 tie-down hooks so I was able to strap the door in and leave the back hatch up, no problem was solid.
    I just read that the Chevy Trax made the IHS Markit’s brand loyalty list (May 2022) (#9) most of the other cars on the list were way more expensive.
    But, not all Trax owners have had the same positive experience.
    I have read reviews and on a Trax Forum where owners did have issues.
    I used Repair PAL for data-driven reliability and the Trax was listed as 4 out of 5 stars (Excellent).
    As always if you are interested in a car take a test drive and do your own homework.
    Thanks for the professional review!

    Disclaimer: I own this car. I find the power totally fine, and I like driving quickly. I live in a city and deal with traffic all the time, I drive faster than almost anyone else on the road; it's a non issue for city drivers. It's high view, spacious seating and ample cargo space make it very nice for the city. The ride is smooth even on ridiculous Chinese roads. It's got the legroom of more expensive cars, and low-rpm torque is fun.

      Drunk driver killed my car so now I'm looking at this one. My rental is this cat and I'm starting to like it even though i hate chevys because of the bad gas mileage. I agree with you though the acceleration is good. It takes like 3 seconds for the engine to react but once it does is good.

      NerdExplorer I own a 2015 model of the Buick version of this car, the Encore, and I like it better. Not only because the Encore is my 1st car, but also with the many features that it has over the Trax. And the gauges in the 2015 Buick Encore are still basic analog gauges with a small center screen, but I like that better than the motorcycle-type gauges the Trax has. But to be fair though, I do think the Chevrolet Trax is a great car, just like it’s twin variant, the Buick Encore and I can see how and why people like this Chevy as much as other people liking the Buick.
      (If only GMC could make they’re own version of this car too, I think that would be awesome too; especially because of GMC’s big boy design language, especially with any Denali trim of any car.)

      I love my Trax. I know it's essentially a purse with all wheel drive but I am secure in my middle age masculinity. Lol
      I wouldn't mind 25 more horsepower but for what I need to for it is zippy enough.
      The rear suspension seems like a throwback and it is but for a guy who used to have a 69 Beaumont with a hopped up 327 I can't say I mind. Storage space for such a small vehicle is ridiculous. 😎

    A coworker of mine actually just bought one of these about 2 weeks ago, same colour even. I believe his to be the trim level below this one, no fog lights and cloth seats. I would not call this a "pretty car" but it isn't too horrible to look at, and seems to be a very practical and useful vehicle. He lives about 45 minutes from our plant with a mixture of back country roads, highway, and city, and he fills up about once a week he said. It's not something I feel I could own, but other than the drum brakes, I can't think of anything bad to say.

      Eric Brunhammer 5 star safety rating is another plus for this vehicle. I don't think GM wants people to upgrade to the Encore, because the Encore was available in the states first. I think it is just a more affordable version for people that can not afford the more expensive Encore. I myself like it.

      Porsche Curves what a piece of crap, a RAV 4 would be a better buy, more HP, better interior, disc brakes all around, more larger and gets as much gas mileage.

      @henrikaleksandernilsen6388 9 років тому +1

      Drum brakes require very little maintenance. The problem comes when you're actually going to do some work, because the cover will be nearly impossible to get off after years of rust building up.

    • @banddude121
      @banddude121 9 років тому

      Roger Toledo By how much? Not a lot. If a car built to be cheap comes with all around disc brakes, there really isn't an excuse for a car to come with drums that costs at least 5,000 USD more than that car.

    Nice work on the review. I'm looking at a re-designed 2017 and I'll just add that the body and dash look is much improved to me. AWD is a great option for an economical vehicle like this and that comes with the rear disc brakes for those of us who prefer it. You can get this option even on the low end LS. That said, only disappointment with LS is lack of cruise control. The turbo is what helps gives this model its good city driving acceleration and fuel economy. Engine/turbo combo is well tested having been in the Cruze line for several years now. This vehicle is probably heavier, especially with the AWD unit. Power seems ok to me with just one person. However, even my Cruze struggled with 4 occupants. If 4 occupants is not the norm for you, this should be fine. Enjoy!

    I REALLY like how you give us some idea about the mechanicals & servicing, as well as the 'practical' aspect of interior features. Most other reviews dwell too much on high tech electronic gimmicks. I still don't know what those big 'holes' are on each side of the center dash air vents? What about the low beam & high beam night visibility?

    Hello EngExplained, I have reservations of no details on armrest for front seats. I didn't hear you mention this, but I did not see an armrest for the FS passenger and the lack of console armrest would be a kill-deal for me as I take long trips. I like the price as tested but wonder if the 4G is 'free' Thanks for the in depth road test.

      I just bought a used 2013 LS base model. I hear your concerns on the turbocharger, I'm not planning to floor mine anytime soon lol. Personally I'm trying to baby it, and see how long I can make it last with basic maintenance. I had really low mileage on mine, which is why I went ahead with the purchase, as it was relatively cheap. It's been about 2000 miles since I bought it, so far no issues. Very good gas mileage, and utilitarian (kinda miss out on the cruise control), but it covers what I need it for.

    Nice review!(no surprise). One question, you can answer it here or in a video. Why are seat heaters bad for fuel economy? Also, what else is bad for fuel economy from these options you can turn on/off, and ofc, why.
    Thx

    • @EngineeringExplained
      @EngineeringExplained  9 років тому

      Seat heaters aren't necessarily bad for fuel economy. With electric vehicles it's more efficient than warming the air. With fuel powered vehicles it's just engine heat, so your only power loss is the electric fans. Regardless, heating your seats or using heat will not have a significant impact on fuel economy. A/C does because it uses an engine belt to power a compressor, putting an additional load on the engine.

      Engineering Explained One more question, something I always wanted to ask but always forget. Have thought about coming up with a grading system for the cars you review? I am sure that would be cool, but it has to be a good, fair grading system, where all cars can compete in different categories such as comfort etc. Just a suggestion, I think people would love to see that(I know I would) :D

  • @grizzlydan8

    Good review Alex. Overall I like this vehicle but have some concerns. I heard that the transmission is a dual clutch that shifted at odd times and not smoothly. I don't like the idea of not engine temp. gauge. I also wonder how much the engine life span will be affected by the turbo. I do like rear drum brakes. I live in the rust belt and rear disc can be an annual maintenance chore here. GM took its full size trucks from disc back to rear drum a few years ago due to major rear brake problems in the land of salted roads.

      Sartaj Aujla But the Aztek was stopped being made 5 years before Pontiac ceased operation. They probably would’ve named it differently, I would think, and the Trax isn’t even close to how ugly the Aztek is. To me, the Trax looks like a less premium Buick Encore more than a Pontiac Aztek. Which I might add, the Aztek almost looks like a Toyota Prius but with less satisfying and uglier design cues.

    This car is made on a global GM platform and it is sold under the name of Buick Encore, Opel Mokka(for the European Union) and Chevrolet Trax. Every Opel facelift has an "X" wrote after the name itself and it's manufactured in South Koreea. Probably the Buick Encore too. I dunno about the Trax. And that Ecotec engine is an Opel engine that has been mounted on Opel Corsas (plural).

    How far can it travel on a full tank? For example my Honda Insight I can travel about 450 miles before tuning out of fuel!

      Key is On, but he hasn't started it (0 RPMs). Check Engine light stays on for that key setting on this vehicle (I have a 2013 Trax, mine does it too).

    US and World Report in their car section said that the 2015 Trax scored well in the reliability scores but after that year the scores weren't that good.

    Cast iron block, drum brakes, torsion beam suspension... what year is it again? The Subaru XV Crosstrek is far superior to this for the same money.

      Honestly, what I see from that lack of technology is cheap repairs and longevity. Subaru Crosstrex is a Flat out POS

    I would say in some ways the trax is really impressive in terms of the amount of space it offers for that size form factor. That said, the quality of the interior materials seems rather disappointing (I suppose they want you to move up to a Buick encore to get the nicer interior), but the biggest let down I think are its power train and price. I mean 25 grand is not that cheap, and a Limited XV Crosstrek has more power, AWD standard, gets better fuel economy, has disc brakes at all four corners, and will probably be more reliable and hold its value better to boot. I mean heck at that price you could even get a Premium level Forester assuming you don't min a cloth interior.

    An 09 Infiniti FX35 is a much better choice. This only gets 5 more combined MPG. And more than double the horsepower.

    We live in central Alberta and purchased a 2015 Trax last spring. It was great till the cold weather hit and has been nothing but trouble since. It doesn't like the cold and the motor stops at intersections, never sure it will start again. It has been back to the dealership several times, in fact it's there now. Here are the supposed problems: #1- o2 sensor, changed and we still have a problem. #2- Air too cold because the intercooler is making the already cold air colder. Solution? White plastic cardboard "winterfront" held on with zip ties. #3 - well the cardboard isn't working so we take it back and do something with the intercooler so it's working again., Yay!! Then we get -30 and #4 guess what? Yup, we are waiting to hear what the next brilliant solution will be. The point of this recitation is, is there anyone out there that has the same problems? I would love to know, thank you.
