1080° Avalanche is the follow up to the 1998 N64 exclusive 1080° Snowboarding. I thought the N64 original was just okay. It was sort of basic bland. But 1080° Avalanche looks to be better in every way. So, is it?

Using a magazine rack in a ski lodge as the main menu is one of the most brilliant ideas I’ve ever seen in a game’s design !
Same with Metro game series main menus having it be a desk with CRT TV an a Radio etc for options

Just remembered this game reminiscing about my old GameCube back in the day, I had 1080 avalanche and SSX3 and I always enjoyed avalanche over SSX, more specifically the avalanches, those were fun to race against, especially as a child
This is one of my favorite games ever, to this day. I just re-bought it again, and I can't wait to play it! And I agree with your opinion that this is better than SSX.

I had a weird dream that this game had a story mode. It started off where you played as a teenage boy. He was being chased down the mountain by two crooks. The first mission was getting down to the bottom before a time limit expires. He makes it to the bottom and tries to reunite with his mother who was waiting for him worried, but unfortunately, the crooks catch up to him and they shoot him. His mother hears the gunshot nearby and runs toward him. Unfortunately, she was too late. Her son was already dead. The rest is playing as the mother trying to find the crooks that murdered her son.
Unfortunately I woke up before I could see how it ends. lol

Man, let me tell you. The Amped 3 game is like Robot Chicken meets a snowboarding game and it's ridiculous silly and awesome even if the core mechanics are just decent! A treasure in my collection and was a launch 360 game.

The 1080 games are one of those series that I just never got to try back in the day. If it's something that can compete with SSX, that is _very_ high praise! I'll have to give it a shot at some point!
The Golden Bolt's Game Reviews You should for sure give it a go. I can tell that the SSX games are good, I just felt like they were overrated and it for some reason just did not strike a chord with me
I’m the other way around, I’ve never played ssx but if it can compete with 1080 that is high praise. I do own a ssx but haven’t played it yet

Also, I don't know if you've ever played SSX 2012, but I can't recommend that game enough. Regardless of what you mentioned about the series, if you like 1080º Avalanche for the speed and the craziness of the avalanche challenges, I think you'll have a blast with that game!
For me the best part are the Deadly Descents, the main objective of the game. 9 mountains which each have their own crazy danger to be surpassed: falling trees, dark caverns, an avalanche (obviously), sharp rocks, freezing cold, low oxygen, absurdly large crevasses and other ridiculous stuff. Aaaand you get to use wingsuits. Take a look at the game if you haven't!

I think the rubber band AI gets soooooo ridiculous on the extra mode, and sometimes the camera gets to shaky, I agree so much on all your points, (except the ssx games not being as good but thats just an opinion) u have to have your boarder lined up with the ground perfectly almost every jump or u will go into unbalanced mode constantly, which has led to me ruining the analog stick on my controller from jerking it too fast, good thing I have 2 more controllers lol. Wish there was more characters and races and I wish extra was just more avalanche races or maybe new tracks, cauterize didn't IMO have very many good songs besides the ones in this game but I listened to them both alot during my 1080 phase, also Ricky winterborn is the only character that can jump over logs from the log factory, and doing it feels so good. I'm glad I watched this, u did a great job and keep up the good work!

I liked this game when it came out. But at the end of the day it was garbage compared to the original. This game stopped stratling the line between arcade and simulation. It was way too arcadey being allot more like the Arcade snowboarders of old. Like the ones sega used to make. I will say the graphics are amazing and replicate the style the series wanted from the start and I really liked the snow falling off the characters but 1080 Snowboarding had reactive clothing, real time reflection and distortion which are super advanced for the time and if you play on the wii U and change some buttons around it really improves the experience. It was the relationship between the player and the board sets it apart from any snowboarder out there! If anything they should make a sequel like the original but have a few of the asthenics of Avalanche along with the Avalanche system. But thats it. I don't want any of the over the top arcade levels pr the toggle to regain balance, or the pedestrians that you have to avoid. 1080 on 64 require real skill and an understanding of that relationship between player, board and surfaces. It just seemed like they were trying too hard to fit in with other extreme snowboarders of the time with Avalanche. That being said I am a fan of arcade snowboarders so I did have fun with Avalanche and definitely feel it brought some freshness to the table but it stripped away allot of its roots giving us a shadow of what it could have been

@@senritsujumpsuit6021 Avelanch added ever so slightly more elaborite tracks but were largly the same linear down hill jam. Avelach also created a bs stumble system where you correct by doing circles on the joystick. The trick system was marginally better as you could hold grabs while spinning but they destroyed the key of what made 1080 so great on 64. The 64 took into account your board versus the surface you were landing on with a degree that made landings in tough situations feel so rewarding and in general this system felt rewarding in a way no other snowboarding game has ever felt. I didnt realize this as a kid and just thought it was hard but rediscovered on Wii U and it blew me away. I still play it regularly over games like steep bc I dream of an uptodate game that feels this good

I mean it's still a fun game but I rarely go back and play bc it's not good compared to the first. I find it too easy and clearly they were trying to stand out amongst SSX as an arcade snowboarding game. 1080 led the way for the genre and games like Tony Hawk. Being simulation in the right areas and arcade in the right areas. If they had kept the physics and board control mechanics while improving tricking the game would have been excellent. I loved the music and graphics/ animations but they went too far to change and ended up blending in the crowd of Sega Arcade winter sports we used to see at chucky cheese. Even though the animation in Avelanch was better. There were more in 64 and they were properly reactive. As was the landing. Bending down made you speed up but also cushioned landings! Bro it is still so damn good. If steep had mechanics like that it would have been the best snowboarding game ever

1080 avalanche is one the most overlooked/overshodowed snowboarding games on the Nintendo GameCube.
If anyone wants to play this game at 1080p60 or upto 5K60 i have a program for you & the game iso i obtained online for anyone that has a strong gaming pc. This game was huge in my life & its sad that id never get a remaster of this game on the next generation consoles like the Xbox X Scarlett or the PS5. Enjoy our childhood game everybody because im already playin it on my ASUS ROG. Enjoying Childhood again.
