  • It's time to followup from on my Wave Race review with Wave Race Blue Storm. In a UA-cam first, I review a video game from my boat, the Moldy Crow. That's not only a Star Wars reference, but a Star Wars video game reference.

man, Wave Racer Blue Storm was my first GC game. I remember my mom bringing the game cube in a store bag as I was just about to wake up. It was marvelous.
To this day I've never completed the expert championship, I couldnt get pass the La Razza Canal, this video was the first time I saw bits of the last level, Strongwater keep. Amazing.

I love the WaveRace franchise. The N64 original was fun but the NGC sequel really stuck with me more. It was one of the very first games that I played on the GameCube. I still love WaveRace BlueStorm and often find myself going back to it every now and then. The graphical effects are stunning and unlike most, I adore the Soundtrack. I use to play 1080 Snowbording as a kid so Rob Haywood & Ricky Winterborn were instantlly my favorite characters to play as.WaveRace Bluestorm I will always hold a special place in my history of gaming.

How does this man not have more views and subscribers! This video has refreshed me on how this good Blue Storm is! I love the original more. The sequel just missed the mark slightly. But not as much as 1080 to Avalanvhe.

You went above and beyond by actually goin out on the water to film this episode! I used to play this game wit my older cousins when I was really young and I found it very difficult at the time. The atmosphere and unease you feel when out on the water in the middle of the night in a thunderstorm was palpable. It felt dangerous and that made it fun lol. The aesthetics are great as well, I forgot all about the water effects on the menu but this video reminded me how cool they were!

First game I ever played on NGC - I both loved and hated it. Going from Gameboy and Atari-like games on PC to this? I was no good at this at age 9 to 13, but I remember being impressed by the whole presentation and completely in love with that one sort of arctic track. I might just have to set up my NGC again... Never owned a N64 though, wasn't even aware that there was an earlier Wave Race game until I was around 20. It does look pretty good for its age, though, in my opinion.

I'm not sure if I've asked you this before, but have you considered reviewing some more recent games?

Thanks! I appreciate the feedback. I have done some more recent games, though usually not directly after release (Battlefield 4, Trials Evolution, AVGN Adventures) but oddly they just don't get many hits, so yeah, I'll probably just keep doing whatever strikes my fancy ;) It's hard to tell what's going to grab a wide audience.

And I also did heared they are working with newer art work and game graphics. And bunch of new features too. But for now there was no more word about the new reboot of wave race. But again I love the 2 original games.

Awesome video!! First one I've seen from your channel, but you've got yourself a new subscriber. :) I personally love Wave Race 64. It's my favourite N64 game of all time - even after all these years. I remember first playing it at an electronics store after school, back in 1997. It's colourful, cheerful, and always lifts me up when I'm feeling bad. You've already said it perfectly: Blue Storm feels kinda bulky and odd compared to Wave Race 64, and its whole atmosphere is that typical early-2000s cheese with the "cool" announcers and music. Everytime I play Blue Storm, I wish it would feel as easygoing and free as Wave Race 64. In short bursts, Blue Storm is good, but all in all, I prefer Wave Race 64. (Oh, and the original GameBoy Wave Race? That's a nice concept but doesn't compare at all.)

    • @ActuallySanFrancisco
      @ActuallySanFrancisco 8 років тому

Dome-Candy Games yeah, i love the seattle area but one of my major beefs with it was always the urban planning and transit infrastructure and how expensive and slow getting around is either way. the bay area definitely is a lot better in that department. i can understand toll bridges are necessary, but at least here i have numerous options of getting around them on trains that are cheaper and faster than driving. oh well. it's nice to at least see seattle making some progress in that department.

Trying to think off the top of my head of top games that ought to be reviewed on a boat: Wind Waker, Sid Meier's Pirates (any version), that Assassin's Creed pirate game (I've never played an AC game), any fishing game (I used to have that Dreamcast fishing controller!... also there's Shigesato Itoi's No. 1 Bass Fishing SNES or N64... Legend of the River King always looked almost as interesting as Pokémon to me), Blood Wake, Hydro Thunder, Dolphin Blue (who doesn't want an arcade party boat like this one: arcadeblogger.com/2016/05/06/arcade-raid-the-duke-of-lancaster-ship/), Waterworld (rip into the movie and the DOS and Virtual Boy games!), Hide & Hold Out (would actually buy this game if you gave it a good review), Thunderjaws, Everblue / Endless Ocean / etc., Jaws Unleashed, Depth, Subnautica... wow I came up with way more than I thought. Skidooing in the arctic in only in their swimsuits? Even if the temp is 10 degrees, you could still get hypo because your body drops 10 degrees from normal body temp. Also, 100km/h against water resistance, where the top speed would realistically be typically 60km/h without hydrofoil? This game is UNREALISTIC. :/

I played Wave Race Blue Storm first, I originally bought the The Legend of Zelda: Collector's Edition however I had to give it back, the store would not return my money instead let me pick another game, the cover of Blue Storm was lame or even repulsive to my taste yet it was the only Gamecube game I didn't had at the time (plus there was no other game worth getting a second copy) so I begrudgingly picked it.
I check to see if it work but didn't play it due to massive amounts of salt but overtime the game won me over and made me try the N64 version (which I ignored for years during the N64 days) and years later when I got my hands on 1080 Avalanche I was happy and surprised to see Ricky Winterborn playable at the select screen, seeing him older just as I was and the first words he said was "Long time no see" felt like a fourth wall experience.
    For me...
    1080 Avalanche #1
    Waverace Blue Storm #2
    Waverace 64 #3
    1080 snowboarding #4
(but I guess if I played the original Waverace on gameboy, snowboarding might land at #5 instead)

@whisperware I agree with the F-Zero. Nintendo did bring back Star Fox (Star Fox Zero), but it did not go well. The funny thing is that Ubisoft did Star Fox better than Nintendo (Star Link: Battle for Atlas), which is just even funnier that the Switch version is the best one because the Star Fox crew is part of the game. Metroid Prime 4 is the perpetual carrot on the stick. 1080 could use a revival as well.

This is arguably one of my perfered version of the wave race series. Again, like he said, this game pushes the GameCube hardware to overdrive. The graphics looks incredibly unique and good. I mean hell, this was made in 2001, and the graphics looks like any PS3 game you could play. They made PS3 Graphics before the console was even made. Each race course also looks unique. You could go from an Egyptian themed temple, to racing in an American themed metropolis. There is a lot about this game that underratedly stood above the other GameCube library Even with the gameplay itself. My favorite though happened to be the weather part where you could race in extreme conditions. It felt intense having to go through them. The controls is also easy to memorize too. You could crouch not only to gain speed, but also help you crash through those tough waves without having you fly all over the place. There are tricks that you could pull off to gain turbo rather easily, and the tough turns would allow you to recover and maneuver around the track rather easily. But with the pros, must have some cons. The controls felt stiff and hard to maneuver through them, the tricks could also happened to be accidental, some parts of the track are unaccessable, specifically the ocean city harbor sewage system, and the fact that all of these cons would easily screw you over, once you reached the expert difficulty. Which let me tell you, is way much harder then you think it would. Almost forgot to tell you about that, once you complete each tour modes, you would unlock a more harder challenge. Normal mode is quite easy and serves as beginners first introduction to the whole game, hard mode where the buoys positioning have changed. Meaning that you must go through tighter turns, and expert mode which if you made more then one mistake, you would be entirely done for. The AI, mixed with those tight maneuvering make it a tough challenge for most people. And again, it is easy to make those possible mistakes. Overall, the game is fantastic.
