How to make a backyard RC track - tips on what to do and what not to do!

  • My favorite RC's for this track:
    Tekno ET48.3 (own it): amzn.to/2SWnzda
    Tekno NT48.3 (own 2!): amzn.to/2SPacMb
    Team Associated RC8 (own 2!): amzn.to/2SNIiQA
    Tekno SCT410.3 (want it): amzn.to/2RjGtOu
    Tekno MT410.3 (want it): amzn.to/2RmPKpg
    My 1/8 scale RC track is 500 feet (150 meters) around with 12 foot (4 meter) wide lanes, 3 banked corners, a single jump, a small set of doubles, and a large set of doubles. Here’s some tips if you’re thinking of making your own RC track:
    - Use the natural lay of the land to avoid fill where possible. If you’ve got a slope, use it as a berm or ramp. I chose a flat area and the fill was a ton of work!
    - Use whatever materials are handy and cheap. I can’t get the black corrugated tubing for lane dividers, but I had access to lots of cheap fill dirt and I used weed killer on the lanes and left the natural grass to divide the lanes.
    - Make a temporary layout and do lots of test runs with A LOT of patience! Once you start building, you don’t want to have to redo anything! Also, there are TONS of track layouts available online. Just search Google Images for “RC Track”!
    - Plan drainage for when it rains…if possible, try to make ramps perpendicular and not parallel to your slope, otherwise you’ll end up with a bunch of lakes when it rains! Since I’ve got so many berms, I buried PVC tubing at ground level for drainage and cut them off flush with the berms.
    - Get lots of help from your friends, you’re going to need it!
    If you have the space and the motivation, go for it, it’s a ton of fun!
    If you have any questions about an RC track project you’re thinking about, feel free to let me know in in the comments, or if you just want to share your track, check me out on

    I have to admit that when I started this project I had no idea how much work it was going to be…since making the track back in 2016 I’ve brought in the backhoe to expand it (no more messing around with hand tools), I’ve installed a barrier with about 50 old tires, and I’ve dumped about 6 loads of fill. Thanks a lot, glad you liked the view! This was at a rural property about 1 hour from where I live in Cuenca, Ecuador. Unfortunately we sold it last year because it was just too much maintenance. I'm still mourning...

  • @NordicRC
    @NordicRC Рік тому +2

    Nice. So how do you keep it clean from weeds? That’s the biggest issue I think. Maintenance.

    • @colibrifpv
      @colibrifpv  Рік тому

      Weed Killer. It's nasty stuff that I would rather avoid, but it was the only way for me to manage such a huge space efficiently. Another option would be just to let the grass grow, than mow the lanes real short and keep the exterior longer...

    If i were to drive on this track, i'd probably get constantly distracted by the stunning scenery. Great location and a great track!

    I'm curious about the flat parts. Did you roto-till the grass up? Did you just run on the grass till it disappeared? Did you poor dirt on top of the grass? Did you kill the grass first...? Great video, this is my dream!

    • @colibrifpv
      @colibrifpv  Рік тому

      Hi Bobby, actually, I used weedkiller, it was by far the most practical. First I laid out some old irrigation lines (like stiff hoses) to mark out the lines and keep it neat, then I went over it very carefully with weedkiller. After a week the lanes were marked and after a month they were just dirt.

    One thing I’ve learned about ramps- Your landing ramp should be almost twice as long as your launch ramp. It’s almost impossible to land well on a ramp that’s the same length as your launch ramp.

    • @colibrifpv
      @colibrifpv  4 роки тому

      You are so right! The reason my track is set up like that is so that you can go in either direction, and since long landing ramps wouldn't give the lift in the other direction when made "bi-directional", the compromise I found eventually was to make longer ramps with a bit of a lip to give the launch necessary. That would they would serve as jumps in one direction and landing ramps in the other direction. It worked pretty well, at least for my purposes. I loved this track, loads of sweat and tears but such a nice escape from work on the weekends!

    Much respect for not using earth moving equipment. How did you compact the soil though? Did you use clay or is that all native material? I'm trying to build something too but don't have the budget to be renting or buying heavy duty equipment. Looks like I could learn quite a bit from you.
    Also how wide are the lanes?

      Thanks a lot Ken. The RC hobby does have a very small but very dedicated following here, but Ecuador is not a rich country and RC toys are expensive! There are a handful of clubs and tracks around the country, but the one in our area had a hard time getting people to pay dies to maintain a community track, which got neglected and closed, so that's why I made my own. It was a TON of work, but good clean fun getting out there with the kids. Take care!

    A man after my own heart! With a lot of hard work and a strong stubborn streak, you can do a lot! Looks great. • @colibrifpv
      @colibrifpv  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Jeff, I did take some time and laid it out with 4 meter wide lanes using irrigation hoses, That allowed me to run the track layout a few times get a feel for it. Then after I was happy with it I used weedkiller on the lanes. AS soon as the grass died it was pretty easy to use fill ta do the rest! I you build one, just be sure to take water into account, rain will wreak havoc on most tracks!

What do you think is the maximum comfortable distance from the RC to the driver? I imagine the height of the stand would make some difference.

    • @badlands366

      I was thinking maybe weed killer, but wasn't sure thought maybe a scraper or raking device too. Either way the results are fantastic, and lanes are very well defined! We use weed killer frequently on our farm, along with rototiller, cut harrow etc, if not the weeds will take over everything, they're like my arch enemy! Anyway again, thanks for sharing it, I'm inspired to get working on my own.
