Good move, taking time for yourself, otherwise you get to the point of having nothing worthwhile. Love the energy and focus you put into your videos, it is so worth the wait!!!
Anyone else get a "woah" moment when the pallet jack went off the end of the truck lift? Lol. Good to see the Epic Homestead coming up! I like those corrugated steel raised beds, built to last. Great planters on the fence as well, no space wasted. Can't wait to see this space in full swing! Keep up the awesome work Kevin!
My first Birdies Bed arrived this past week and I finished filling it on Saturday. What I love most about it is I was able to assemble it myself! I am getting older and more limited in my abilities. When I built my wooden raised bed, my son had to help me. I couldn't do it myself. He has since grown and moved away, so I am limited to projects I can perform independently. Birdies Beds afford that sort of independence. It felt great knowing that I could do it myself. I can't wait to get planting in it, but my growing season is just about over. I'm considering putting my garlic in it instead of in the wooden bed. Thank you for making it possible to have these beds in the U.S.
My dad built a bat house for me, since we live across from a lake, I had a real problem with mosquitoes. I have two bats living in it now, it’s really helped, you might want to try one.💕
Someone, I can't remember who, advised this as an alternative living space if you have bats being a nuisance and trying to get into your attic or other destructive nesting.
You're increasing the value of your neighbourhood one project at a time. It all looks so good. I like your new outdoor gym and you've given me some ideas for my patio. Thanks!
there is a whole lineup of plants you can add to a garden such as citronella, mint, etc that can help with pests like mosquitoes. I've opted to add goldfish to my pond.
I hope you're feeling better, I know your back was sore......dead hang several times a day, it is so good for your spine. You work so hard. I'm eyeballing all that cardboard in the background, sheet mulch heaven!! I just finished expanding my garden with sheet mulching AND I've been scrounging HT pallets to make 2 bigger compost bins. More garden = more compost. I will now commence begging my neighbors for veggie food scraps. Got lots of brown, need more green. I think a lot of us urban/backyard gardeners are going full out, what was a fun healthy hobby has become more.......essential. My sunny back yard is now 3/4 veg garden. I already warned hubby he WILL be learning gardening. With any luck maybe we'll get to live with that fabulous worm butt bag after all. He's thrilled.......
You are teaching us so much more than just 'everything plant' Kevin. You are teaching & sharing everything that goes with becoming an interested, caring & devoted 'Urban Gardener'. The definition of Urban Gardening, I found, say's "Urban Gardening is to create an abundance of food. By supporting and encouraging the establishment of gardens on unused land and space while increasing diversity, raising awareness for health and wellness, and inspiring and educating youth, adults and seniors to create". Long short short here, I could understand just why you felt the need to 'take a bit of down time', but in saying this......you are not only creating abundance by doing what you do, but you teach us it's ok to stay healthy and well (mentally, physical & emotionally) by taking 'down time'. No worries!! ;-)
Hey Kevin, I have been looking into well a bunch of stuff but what I have learned is that when tree farmers plant trees to cut they will intermingle different kinds near each other rather than planting all of one kind together. this helps reduce pests that like certain plants much like companion plants and disease because it can't spread as easily.
Not all soil from the county's land fill is created equal. I stopped getting soil mix from our county as you had to load it yourself (which is fine), it has bits of glass, chunks of trash and a ton of sand in it, very heavy. I was actually afraid to use because I didn't know what was in it, so i stopped going. At the time I didn't know where to get the soil tested. Now that I have all this knowledge I can better assess the soil. It's been 2 years since I've been back and I'm wondering if it's changed at all? I still reccomend people go check out what their county has to offer but to be smart about it. This isn't to scare anyone but to educate of what could possibly happen. I wish getting soil wasn't such a challenge, my soil is mostly sand. Love seeing all the progress you've made! I look forward to all your future projects!
Long Island NY 40 people just indicted for offering free fill which was contaminated. 1 million dollars was seized from them to do cleanups. You see the advertising on Craigslist all the time
You're doing a huge amount of work so be easy on yourself about not getting videos out as quickly as you'd like. Even as a 10+ year gardener, I've learned so much from all of your videos and am so excited to see how the Homestead is progressing. You always have so many helpful tips and I appreciate the one in this video about free soil from your municipality. The cowboy candy recipe is amazing! I added some Filus Blue for some additional color and will be making this again soon. Hello, from zone 4b!
So nice to see the changes starting to come together! Don't worry about us and videos, building an epic new life takes time...we're gardeners, we have the patience for it to grow! 😀
I miss going to the community leaf pile with my daddy. We always came home with treasure: mums in their pots, canna lily bulbs, forgotten or misplaced tools, pumpkins for the compost... Who knew that we were making priceless memories?
Glad you heeded the need for a rest period. You are entitled to rest, especially in this awful heat. Lots of changes. Homestead is coming along. Happy to see all the progress. You must feel proud. Thank you for taking the time to share it all with us. Keep up the good work, Kevin.
I got plenty of exercise in my garden today, plus I’m trying to walk at least a mile a day and plush ups every morning. I need to loose weight, so hopefully I’ll reach my weight loss goals with those activities. Plus, I plan on eating healthier with all the vegetables that I’m growing.
Kevin, I just want to say thank you. I've been following the videos, podcasts, and blogs as I've been getting my own small space raised bed veggie garden ready for 2021. You and your team have been such a wealth of information that whenever I have a question or idea, I can just hit "ep" and auto-suggest goes to "epicgardening." Thanks again, and wish you continued success
Hi Kevin, You have been very busy. I am so excited to see the new shed. 😁 I hope that your new roof is a superior quality roof! Not being negative.....flat roofs have tendencies to leak. (we had one, when I was growing up). Pace yourself. If your muscles get sore, remember to soak with epsom salt. Take care and have a blessed week. 🌸
The advice on the new roof with solar panels is spot on. My roof was only about 5 years old before I decided to get panels. Best to wait and get the panels with the new roof. Otherwise you're roof will expire before your panels will and you'll be paying a remove and reinstall to replace your roof during the life of your panels. That's extra costs you don't want to have to eat up later.
Thank you for the great info on compost from the landfill! I'm in Ohio and looked for this kind of resource near me and found a service that collects food waste from the community, creates soil blends/compost, and sells bags of it at a few local stores. I'd much prefer to use community supported and created compost that saves food waste from going into a landfill! Thanks!!
Right on man! I know its been a year practically since this was uploaded, but remember peeps *Love yourselves enough to take care of yourselves* Awesome home gym Kev.
Congrats on your new place! What a great experience to start from scratch! I do have a suggestion. Have you ever heard of pigeon peas? I've been learning about it as a friend of mine loves them. Its a great legume that grows on perennial bushes that frankly can reach 6-12 feet. It can serve as a good wind break and provides dappled shade for other plants. It's a great way to get started on improving soil, and it's food for you and your future chickens! 🤣
Everything looks great! You've been working so hard on it all and I'm glad you're stopping to get some rest for yourself. Gym is going to be so helpful to have on hand, too! Excited to see how everything comes together. Keep it up Kevin!

Amending raised bed question.. When amending a raised bed, what should go first, garden mulch(cut up corn stalks, grass, and cut up sunflower stalks) or compost?
why tree collars? their root system is super extensive, that extra little bit above ground isn't doing anything nutrient wise but it does lead to more soil against the trunk which is bad.
It can be hard to do, but the best way how to get rid of mosquitoes and flies in the garden is the usage of wasps, ants, mantises and other insectivores. I try to promotie their presence to decrease the bad things
Are going to recycle and reuse the materials from the shed? Free wood is the best wood. The wood I use to build raised beds is from recycling wooden crates and pallets, works great!

EH - Awesome! LMAO! Who is the aussie in your world? Your house and property could be in any outback or country town in Aus...All you need is a hill hoist.....truly love it, brilliant!😉🍻
So cool!!! But in my eyes one importing thing for biodiversity is still missing - a small pond, or did I missed it? (I am sure you know the documentary movies „kiss the ground“ and „the biggest little farm“).
I'd be careful planting any deciduous fruiting trees in the Fall. SD conditions a tad different from most of country but there still not a lot of time for the tree to send new roots before shutting down down until Spring. Risky messing with the root ball at this time of year.
Great tips, as always! On a past video you mentioned that you have a pretty epic spreadsheet, I haven't been able to find it anywhere. Do you have a link to share it with us?
I truly love those terracotta pots for your dragon fruit. Where did you get them? Also does your friend sell cuttings of his varieties of dragon fruit? I don't remember if that was mentioned in that video. A couple of those from the taste test video seemed really appealing to me.
Angela, I have a physical handicap and I was able to assemble mine by myself. It felt great knowing that I did it independently. I did use other structures to prop up the panels while I fastened them, but it wasn't difficult at all.
@@angelaanderson5360 Same here I need to see it first, but you can watch him assemble them on his shop page, that's what he said. Just look on the menu under FAQS there is a link that says assemble the videos are there.

So cool!!! But in my eyes one importing thing for biodiversity is still missing - a small pond, or did I missed it? (I am sure you know the documentary movies „kiss the ground“ and „the biggest little farm“).
Working on it ;)
I'd be careful planting any deciduous fruiting trees in the Fall. SD conditions a tad different from most of country but there still not a lot of time for the tree to send new roots before shutting down down until Spring. Risky messing with the root ball at this time of year.
Good call, I still have more research to do on orchard!
I really love your orange shirt.
You are amazing!
I have found plenty of plastic in the Miramar (city of SD) compost. It's cost effective but the city does not recommend it for direct planting.
Weird, I screened and found none!
@@epichomesteading Maybe they've cracked down in the past year to meet the standards they claim on their website. Good to know!
Great tips, as always! On a past video you mentioned that you have a pretty epic spreadsheet, I haven't been able to find it anywhere. Do you have a link to share it with us?
Working on it!
I truly love those terracotta pots for your dragon fruit. Where did you get them? Also does your friend sell cuttings of his varieties of dragon fruit? I don't remember if that was mentioned in that video. A couple of those from the taste test video seemed really appealing to me.
Planters paradise here in San Diego...and Richard doesn't currently sell!
The compost at our landfills is free but I worry about what's in it and it looks like crap
I wish you had assembled the raised bed you received on camera. I am hesitant to purchase because I think it will be hard to assemble.
Angela, I have a physical handicap and I was able to assemble mine by myself. It felt great knowing that I did it independently. I did use other structures to prop up the panels while I fastened them, but it wasn't difficult at all.
I have assembly instructions on the shop page under FAQs as full videos!
I'm a visual learner.
@@angelaanderson5360 Same here I need to see it first, but you can watch him assemble them on his shop page, that's what he said. Just look on the menu under FAQS there is a link that says assemble the videos are there.
Didn't see if this was asked and answered, but did you leave ALL of your other Birdies Beds at your other place???!!!!!??? If you did, WOW!!! I hope you sold them to the new tenants
You are working out as are your worms back there! 😉
The 26% rebate isn't just California - that's federal for the moment. 2021 is 22%.
Shape? I'm in shape...round is a shape!
