I love Planters Paradise! The prices are so reasonable and they have such a great variety of pots and planters. I have to go there with a goal otherwise I’d buy out the place.
I just planted two raspberries and blackberries in pots. They are a thornless dwarf bugs so they should be easy to manage. I planted three different types of blueberries that will ripen at different times throughout summer. There is nothing like fresh berries. I used an acidic soil for the blueberries and made sure they all got some worm castings and worm tea.
Nice, as I look outside my window at over a foot of snow covering the ground it's fun to hang out with you and live vicariously through you in your videos hahaha. How often is it that people casually walking by on the sidewalk stop and marvel at your epic garden?
You should definitely build a roof top desk area on your roof. Like a small walk way around the solar panel so you can hang out up there with out damaging your roof.
Hey Kevin, I'm loving this series. As an apartment dweller, I enjoy gardening vicariously through your channel. Based on the sunset pan of your neighborhood, it looks like you are doing something unique to the area. Have any of your neighbors talked to you about this project? You certainly seem to be improving the visual appeal of the lot compared to what was there when you moved in.
You should try a hydrosystem for your apartment- I got an AeroGarden because of the same situation, and it has been so much fun! I have more basil than I can handle! I think there are cheaper ones too, you could even make a simple Kratky system at home!
If you can afford the space and the expense, you can do a lot in a grow tent! If you can afford LED lights the electric bill is minimal. I own a house but get minimal sunlight in the forest.
Hello Kevin! Truly appreciate you taking the time to make and share these videos. You are bringing sunshine to those of us who are experiencing ice and snowstorms. Happy homesteading🤗
I have one of those rain barrels. It's lasted a little over a decade and still going. I took the main screen off and put in a nylon screen, like for your windows under it then screwed the one that came with it back on. It' helps keep bugs out that way. Also you will need to hose it out occasionally as it will get sludge on the bottom. They have held up in zone 6b just fine, even in winter. Do drain them if you get cold winters in SoCal you should be fine though.
I love how the homestead is coming together! It's such fun to see how you are adding new plants and you are so neat and tidy about it all even though it's in constant transformation! You rock, Kevin! You inspire me so much! Thank you for all your content🙏🧡
I would consider rising up the rain barrels off the ground with a stand or something so you can fit a watering can underneath, unless you just plan on attaching gravity fed drip irrigation from them? Either way it’s coming along leaps and bounds!
At the beginning of the vid I was looking at the blue sky & palms behind you & wished I could see what it's like where you are...& then!! Bam! You showed me!! Killer man!! Thanks for that sunset!
An avid gardener and professional landscaper we know in SoCal suggested using untreated douglas fir bark as mulch and natural fertilizer for blueberry bushes. 1 year after DF bark application my 6 bushes are absolutely transformed, flowers and then berries for days and days. You may have to search for these Douglas fir chips from your local nurseries and the bags aren't cheap but it's totally worth it and highly recommend it for a great blueberry yield the following season.
Quick tip on transferring water: take a hose and stick one end in the source (garbage container) and hold the other end near the destination. Suck on that end until you get water. Put the tip of the destination end in the rain barrel at a lower elevation than the source end tip. Spit out the water :) Now I just need to provide about a million more tips to even come close to helping you as much as you’ve helped me!
It’s lookin’ amazing, Kevin! My garden is still under snow, but I’m living vicariously through you. Starting my first seeds inside tomorrow actually... so there’s that 😊
WE’VE made tremendous progress! (“we” as in UA-cam viewers too b/c we’re participating...in our heads 🙃😆). For the aphids on cabbage & kale - I’m surprised you didn’t have nasturtiums in there. The aphids will be all over the nasturtium leaf undersides and will (mostly) leave your brassicas alone. Lets (“we” again) sow some nasturtiums in that bed! 🌱💫
Just received my worm bin from your shop and put it together. I will keep it in my pantry in the garage until I get my shed built and will start it soon (also taking a local master composter course).
Finally!!! Rain water collection!!!! So much awesome content I’m going to use!! Gunna have to watch this one a few times to glean all I can from it!!!! Thank you Kevin!!!
I got food safe rain barrels off of craigslist. (I don't live in San Diego.) Most of the people who sell those will also tap them; if not, you can buy a tapping kit on amazon for cheap. They look better than the fake barrels, in my opinion, and they have a lip to catch the water in heavy downpours. What you've got works, so no sweat... just an idea if you need more. Keep us posted on the property - it's really fun to see the progress!
WOOT!!! Blueberries and garlic! Also great to see the rain catchment system getting put in place - you are in a fantastic position now! Self-sustainable Kevin on the rise! Thank you for another great update video!
If you don't have something to mix large amounts of soil in, you can try what I do. I lay down a large tarp, pour out the soils, and I mix it all up on the tarp. This also helps keep out any weeds or grass from the fresh mix. Happy mixing!
Two things to discuss. Your downspouts being made of copper is good for your roly poly /pill bug decomposers. They need copper as it is what their blood is based on. Second, I am glad you are using water conservation measures. I live off of the Colorado River too and we need more sensible water use.
One of the few reasons I miss San Diego (when the ship would pull in and the weather was almost always nice) while I look outside and watch as the snow is still trying to fully melt. I think I can start working on seed starts indoor this weekend.... About time!!
So excited to see how everything is coming together! Giving me spring encouragement🤗. I planted citrus plants in pots in zone 8a...then the cold came. I feel so silly. I put plankets on them, so fingers crossed 🤞🏼.
You'll have better/faster flow from the tote and rain barrels if they're set on cinder blocks. This increases the head in the water. They'll flow okay when full but the flow rate slows considerably as the water level goes down
You inspired me. Bought 5 gallon, tall skinny blueberry plants from Terra Bella nursery, Southmoon and Jewel. Blueberries have been successful for us here in Chula Vista in wide, deep containers or half whisky barrels. Very prolific, the ones that are 3 or 4 years old.
Thanks for the vid, I am in PNW but still considering doing blueberries in fabric pots just because of their acidic needs. We do have a park not far from my house that is public that someone years ago filled with Blueberries and everyone is free to go pick. We have been several times over the years, isn't that a great idea? Parks that feed people for free! Still going to get my own though.
Well done Kevin, I love the progress you are making. I would love to see drawings/Sketches of your yard if you have them. Would you consider raising your rain barells off the ground so you can put a watering can under the tap. Birdeys bed are a beautiful sight. Stay Happy Chris Geelong Australia.
Ironically, I ended up coming across your videos because I was trying to figure out the dragonfruit cuttings I got from another local, and while trying to look up stuff about growing blueberries in Escondido I came across you again. I subscribed! Here's hoping I'll run into you at a local nursery. I'll be heading out to see Jim Duffy in Lakeside to grab some specialty spicy peppers in May. He's nationally respected and also a local for us.
Check out blue barrel systems for an affordable and modular rain barrel system. It allows you to link together multiple barrels to catch hundreds of gallons of rainwater!
What I always found to be the most effective against aphids are other insects and ants. If you plant another plants that aphids really love close to an ant colony, the ants will move the aphids to those plants and then you have them all close together to make an easy kill by getting rid of the plant or using pesticides
Very clever. We don't usually have a lot of aphids where I live but this spring was absolutely insane. They were everywhere, and now when they are gone it seems they left viruses behind in some plants. I didn't know they could do that and just let the aphids be if the plants looked okay. Not again. I will need to be more alert in the future. What plant would you recommed that the aphids like? Mustard?
@@thatsalt1560 oh that is terrible Aphids in my garden love poppy and sunflowers the most so i use those by the way. But yeah, one species of aphid is different from the other. Even aphids from the same species in a different area have different preferences
Smart Assistant Kevin: Wearing a mask and gloves whilst handling compost, (which can contain all sorts of nasties, some of which can result in Legionnaire's Disease type lung problems.)
Fungus often likes shade. Remember to check to spray between the stands and the dragonfruit stalks for rust spots not as easily seen. Should copper spray be misted a bit on top of soil to prevent spores ?
I ordered blueberry plants that will be delivered in April. I am in zone 6b. They suggested growing them together but wondered if that varied based on variety . Looks at doing them in a round birdies bed
You’re lucky to not have a gopher problem! I have to line all my beds with hardware cloth then build over it. Those gophers are cute but I have seen them take out my 3-ft diameter New Zealand flax - no trace left!
Kevin I think you need to put the barrels onto something to have them higher so you don't depend on a pump to empty them completely. Also... that bowed up mesh (the off-center one) probably won't do much for the water collection, but there is an easy fix - remove it from the screws and either cut that one or another plastic/rust-free metal one in a circle shape to fit inside the hole and stick it in there a few millimeters with a glue gun - that ought to make them good to go :) I don't know if it's on purpose... seems like a manufacturing error, but if it is on purpose... there is a small advantage: leaves and other "large" matter won't stay on a bowed up mesh, it will run down outside. By putting the mesh lower it would gather leaves and debris eventually. But if you clean it/scrape with your hands every 4-5 rains... you should be fine with the solution I explained above. The progress looks great! Good luck!
Your homestead is truly moving along quickly. It looks so neat and beautiful. I love those copper gutters. Question: How will you actually water your gardens from the rain barrels? I know, you'll have an upcoming video on this. Right? Haaaa.
If you're in San Diego, the pots are from Planter Paradise - great value and a very nice owner
Oh man I was loving those pots. But i'm in New York..lol.
I love Planters Paradise! The prices are so reasonable and they have such a great variety of pots and planters. I have to go there with a goal otherwise I’d buy out the place.
Reasonable enough to make the trip from the Inland Empire?
How many gallons (aka how large) are those pots? I have a blueberry plant I bought last year that needs to be repotted.
What's the downside of putting them in the ground?
I was thinking a hedge of blue, black, rasp and elderberry.
I love how much this man is thriving
Me too! Truly deserving! Go Kevin!
This man, or this man bossing around Josh?
its fun to see him add cool new stuff to the homestead. there's been so much improvement, bed by bed, gutter by gutter.
@@audiophilesallowed6479 His name is Jacques, show some respect
I'm loving how much this place has transformed since Kevin moved in 😍
Man, I'm still so in love with those shiny gutters. They're the best part of the house imo.
