Here in Brazil, especially in the poorest areas of the NE region, harvesting rain was the way many families found to get out of water shortages and even thirstiness. it is an amazing resource and I'm so glad that you are using it on your home! more people should do it, even if they have full access to secure water supply

    I AM CRACKING UP!
    Hi neighbor, I’m in Encinitas.
I literally just put out large plastic bins with open upside down umbrellas that I cut the centers out of on top😂 another large bin that had a hole in the corner balanced at an angle to drip into a bucket. But hey! I did it when we had that storm and filled 2 5 gallon sparklett water bottles, however the wind was INSANE so umbrella didn’t last long. I have not one rain gutter! Think I’ll try installing a few by myself.
A few foul pans from the dollar store etc.
Using water on my seedlings in my little green house I put in my kitchen. Wish I could post pics because both situations are hilarious. Thanks for being my go to gardening guide!

I like the idea of putting a cistern in the ground. You know, they used to do that in the good old days. However, cisterns that are above ground have the added benefit of using gravity for watering instead of a pump.

Hi Kevin, regular viewer here all the way from the Philippines. I understand your sustainability and longevity goals for choosing copper, and I'm pretty sure you've done your research about this material. Aren't you worried about copper-contaminated runoff and its potential impact on your plants and soil? Read a couple of studies that reveals the negative impacts of copper-contaminated rainwater on plants and soil.

Awesome setup for water capture! Exciting to see in SoCal where water is a pretty precious resource. When we bought our house over a decade ago I wanted to run all of our gutters into a central collection location. I'm still determined to make it happen! We have an abandoned septic system, it probably hasn't been used in 30 yrs. I was hoping to convert it as I found guidance from residents in the Florida Keys that converted old septic tanks on their property. I think it's a 1200 gallon tank but maybe we'll dig it up and go even bigger!

I have rain barrels on most of my downspouts. The rain barrels all have fish in them to help keep the mosquitos down plus free fertilizer and then the spout for this is 2/3rds down on the barrel to allow the fish to always have some water. There is a drip system setup for all the plants around the barrels. It's a really good system that you really don't need to do much to.

Kevin, the gutters are gorgeous! Try checking out for gutter guards. They are mesh type screens that fit over the gutters to keep leaves and other debris from clogging up your gutters and downspouts. Saves time and water when you don't have to flush out your gutters after big storms. Also, consider mosquito control mesh screens for your water collection vessels. Summer and mosquitos will be coming along in no time.

I think people in the comments are confusing Copper wire with copper piping or drains its a totally different price when it comes to scrapping. Im an electrician and you can get up to almost 3 dollars a pound for stripped copper WIRE! (Depending what the price per pound is at the time) Thieves prob wouldn't waste their time trying to steal these drains. You Wouldn't get no where near as much as you would for wire. Not to mention that shit would be so loud trying to demo lol. But aside from all that. It looks super clean dude! I wanna do this to my house.

I have 2 330 gallon tanks above water. I collect from my sump pump and then rain and use a pump to then water my garden and yard. Its not enough to water everything all the time in Missouri but at least 30-45% depending on the water rainfall. I had to drag a lot of hoses everywhere to water my lawn but hopefully with the Hoselink I can just get a hose to that system and then either use the city or collected water.

Hey Kevin, great content! I love to see your excitement about saving water and using it wisely and creating a buzz around the topic in general!
I do want to bring something to your attention though. I’m a homeowner of about 5 years who has a similarly sized garden to your lot and I am wondering if you actually need and will be able to utilize 5000 gallons a year for garden irrigation... Drip systems are extremely efficient and I’ve found myself not incurring very much excess water usage costs despite the ‘old tales of warning’. And although I live in a different climate than your San Diego heat, 5000 gallons just sounds like so much water to store and keep clean. I know it must be really hard this early to estimate irrigation usage but I was wondering if there might be any pitfalls of storing TOO much water and having it sit still for extended periods of time. I am imagining you having to treat the water to keep certain un-beneficial living organisms at management and such if there potentially isn’t a constant turnover rate, as well as level of water required to keep a pump effective.
What do you think about those possibilities? I know you’re a researcher but cross-talk is important so here’s my 2 pennies!
    Thanks for your documentation, again!

Hi kevin ! this is sooooooo cool ! You do live your dream life and I feel so gratefull that you are sharing it with us ! Solar, and now water harvesting, I totally understand why you are filming at midnight, i could not sleep either hahaha ! coper is so beautifull, I totally agree, you made a cool choice ( hope it won't get stollen ). Buried cistern could be cool if you want to have a big system. Maybe think about having a greehouse before ? Water can act as a thermal balast ( not sure this is written like this in english sorry ) and be very usefull in a walpini system. you could bury a concrete cistern then build this over and optimize your space, but this is just a random idea, not sure you need a greenhouse with your climate. I trust you to speak with people working in this field ! ( especially about the size of the installation : if you can have x gallon a year, you don't need to stock them all, you would use w each day and you need an estimation to have a good fit ) Anyway I wish you the best and will continue to be exited everytime you are talking about your epic project !

Great planning and design on the gutters. If you allow me to give an opinion regarding the portion of roof where the gutter “dumps” onto the adjacent roof (5:40 min). Although the “drop” from gutter to roof is probably less than 6 inches it would be prudent to ask your roofer to recommend a small “splash pad” that will protect the roof from the dropping and/or falling water.

Aluminum can last a long time. It’s incorrect to assume copper lasts longer. I removed the gutters of my home because old construction of gutters was poorly done. It had to be modernized. So 20 years from now, you might need to update it because your needs change or something else. Your copper installation appears inadequate in case you want to sell your house. You need downspouts that reach the ground. The back splash in a few spots will ruin your wall if you don’t get your rain barrels installed soon.

Check out Rain Brothers diverter. Allows you to put the rain barrels anywhere. Dont have to keep your barrels next to down spout and overflow goes down normal spout.
