My respect for Jimmy went up even higher when he was asked in a recent interview what his typical day is. He mentioned he goes to drum lessons (jazz). He’s all about getting better at his craft. Nothing but respect sir.
He was learning jazz drums before the Pumpkins... it's what gives the Pumpkins a unique sound over other alternative bands of the same era and informs his style
Any link to this interview please? It’s great to continually improve and get coaching; even the top tennis players and other sports atheletes have coaches. This is what my surfing coach pointed out. (And boy do I need more surfing coaching lol)
there's something really satisfying about a guy with an incredible pocket playing a washy (remote) hat with his right hand but also doing the 8th note hats with his foot. there are very, very few drummers I can think of that have the economy of movement that Chamberlin has, and there is no one on the planet who can play with as much power while seemingly barely moving his arms. a lot of guys spend twice the energy to get half the effect.
Right? The way he flicks the crash cymbals yet makes them explode is something I can only aspire to ape to this effect. Also, drumming with a huge wrist watch... I can't even wear long sleeves lol
i've been watching him for 30 years and I am serious as cancer when I say I am still legitimately amazed every single time. I was at the first show when he rejoined the band in 99 at this small club (the most excellent St Andrew's Hall in Detroit) and it was one of the most insane things I've ever witnessed@@finowa
Jimmy has always had the 8th notes on the hi hat foot throughout the songs he's recorded. Go back and little to Pumpkins.... everytime you hear hi hat, it's likely his foot, so his right hand is free to color around the kit. Jazz drummer's arpproach to a pure rock drummer's mindset and touch :-)
@@ChrisPernaDrums I think OP was specifically talking about the auxiliary open hats combined with the left foot 8ths, something which might feel counterintuitive or redundant but just works and adds a very subtle texture and bounce to the mix
I just want to thank whoever shot this video that day, in this manner. You made an outstanding clinic video for aspiring drummers to watch and take notes on. This really gives you insight on his ergonomic approach, body movement, posture, etc. It also shows that you can play “loud” without having to beat the shit out the drums.
100% agree excellent video of a real master of his craft Always tasteful always powerful Huge inspiration to myself and no doubt anybody who knows what they're looking at - Jimmy chamberlin Danny carey Tim Alexander You can't go wrong with these players
Like Stewart Copeland in the Police, Jimmy's drumming was a much larger part of the noise of Smashing Pumpkins than most groups. Both these guys made drumming a real part of the music.
So cool that even though he had those powerful crash hits, when he switched to the ride, it was so controlled and light. Everything he's doing is measured and intentional.
First... that might be the most beautiful drum kit I've ever seen. Second... the connection between Billy and Jimmy is absolute musical perfection. As I watched this, the guitars and the vocals were fully playing in my brain. They have the perfect musical partnership, jimmy understands exactly what the song needs at every moment. Even when his fills are busy as hell they never get in the way; quite the opposite, just elevating it. Amazing.
Me too ' 100% Completely changed how I saw and played drums when I discovered jimmy Him Danny carey and tim Alexander Completely shaped my playing beautiful technicians
I love that he has that bigger tom before the smaller tom on the rack. Unusual setup but it makes his triplets w floor tom sound so deep without having to move all of the way to the other side with the left hand.
Jimmy said he started using that setup when he joined the band because it made it easier to play the tom groove in I Am One. Otherwise he would have had to use a really awkward sticking pattern.
Jimmy’s definitely my favorite 90’s drummer, along w/ Danny Carey from Tool. He has incredible chops and doesn’t get enough credit. Although you have to be a genuine 🎃’s fan to discover his skills in non-radio songs & side projects like the Jimmy Chamberlin Complex. I’ve seen the Smashing Pumpkins live 6-7 times. My favorite show was the Arising tour w/ QOTSA, when Jimmy returned. Lollapalooza ‘94 was also great!
The first time I heard Jimmy was on "Everlasting Gaze" from the album "Machina". I couldn't believe that someone could be so good on the drums and when I looked up who it was, he was already a very respected person in the music world. I follow his career to this day. It's nice to know that "drum doctors" still exist. Thx fot the upload! 👍
lots of drummers do the left foot thing, but there is just something about the way Jimmy does it. tried to figure out what it is and all I can come up with is it's metronomic without sounding metronomic. thanks for the inspiration man.
After all these years I'm still convincing music fans that Jimmy C's talent is second to none. Of all the things I love of SP music, which I still reach for, that percussion is the most satisfying ❤
Some of the most locked in, creative playing from Jimmy is on the album “Gish”. His creativity in fills during typical rock songs is amazing. He has nuance and dynamics and has a perfect understanding and application of both. Epic player.
I haven't spent a ton of time watching Jimmy in my drum career but he's definitely someone to pick up drum traits from. The dude is just laying that groove down through the verses and is awesome stuff. MORE VIDEOS!
As a kid before I knew I wanted to drum Jimmy was blowing my mind. He was what I paid attention to most. I couldn’t believe it. He opened my ears to the beat. I’m like 40 now.
I was 11 when I first heard the pumpkins in 94. Geek USA was the song that mesmerized me. Still my favorite drummer to hear play 30 years later. Funny thing is, I play bass not drums. Lol just really get into watching videos or listening to musicians I admire.
Everything I can say about his abilities I've said before. With that said I just wanna admire his kit. He really has achieved fine tuning and hand picking the best tones and quality craftsmanship with everything assembled. For me personally he has the best snare and his cymbals sound perfect
This is great!! For another fantastic glimpse of Jimmy, you can check out the full 1994 Pink Pop Concert on UA-cam. The camera is right above and behind him and gives you a great view of his amazing drumming.
One of my favourite Pumpkins grooves! Wasn’t until I’ve just heard the drumming alone here, that I recognise the main riff/ refrain/ beat? Being so similar to the song; ‘I Am One’. 🤟☺️
Every time I hear this song and groove I think of the Transformers movie. It was a perfect fit for that action sequence. I have lived this song ever since. 👍👍🤘🏿🤘🏿
Long after Jimmy leaves this Earth, that left foot will still be tapping out eighth notes.
Haha
So true
And, lets not forget the ghost notes on the snare. Man, this song just grooves.
So true man
Haaaa ! Love it

Even Yoda when to the Force Priestesses to learn. At the age of about 800. It's called humility.

100% true everything that you said
the drummer's drummer. what a legend.
The best part of it all is that he just looks like he is having fun. At practice.
Yesss!!!
Well put! One of my inspirations as a drummer
Ain’t that true. The master
Doesn’t waste an ounce of energy. Just beautiful to watch.

Look up Smashing Pumpkins Zeitgeist Documentary. There's some real musical insight in their relationship.
Love his underlying swing, what an incredible touch and feel this guy has!
Those hi-hat bites at 2:52 like it's nothing. Jimmy is the king.
my personal favorite drummer!
Same!
Me too 👍🏼

We need more drum cam videos of Jimmy playing live! United States would be amazing!

I was at the first how of that tour! Unreal seeing Queens and the original lineup at a club. Shout out to St Andrew's Hall in Detroit ROCK CITY
Jimmy wailing down on the drums! Love his drumming on Zeitgeist

Excellent wrist work too, so much strength and control there but it looks effortless for him
I love the way he plays time. It's a beautiful feel.

How does he make it look so easy, the man a machine!!!
What a groove!! 🤩
Jimmy is a guy with a big kit who makes use of all of it. He’s such a great drummer, love his feel and his pocket it’s so jazzy.
Underrated song on an underrated album. Some of Jimmy’s best drumming is on Zeitgeist
I couldn’t agree more with this comment. Jimmy absolutely brought the thunder on Zeitgeist.
All songs with the exception of United States were 1 take.
Yep. One of My favorite albums.
100%
@@killbotone6210correct, it was the 2nd take I think. He still did it all in one shot lol, he's a monster
The left foot on hihat / Ticking in my heart / My left foot on the hat / Will it ever stop?
He plays the song so clearly playing chord changes even though we can't hear the tracks. Favorite drummer always and forever.
I ve been a fan of jimmys drumming ever since i heard that 1st pumpkins album, this man go flow

The best looking drumset that I have ever seen.
What a view he has every night. Jimmy is a monster, so elegant. His left foot always got me.
The man. Holy hell. There’s nobody like him. Slaying me every time.
Ladies & Gentlemen....
Jimmy Chamberlin 😎✌️👌🥁
I haven't spent a ton of time watching Jimmy in my drum career but he's definitely someone to pick up drum traits from. The dude is just laying that groove down through the verses and is awesome stuff. MORE VIDEOS!
man those lightning singles that only actual drummers and physicists can truly appreciate. so light and so powerful.
My 😍 drummer. I could watch videos of him playing like this all day. So musical even without being able to hear the other instruments
Like a true master he makes it look easy. Narrator: it isn’t.
You have to have great technique to control a snare drum like that, you need it to cut but you don’t want it kill everything else, wonderful balance.
looks like he’s been doing this his whole life
One of my favorites and absolutely a top tier drummer
As a kid before I knew I wanted to drum Jimmy was blowing my mind. He was what I paid attention to most. I couldn’t believe it. He opened my ears to the beat. I’m like 40 now.
I can’t believe they are playing these song these live! Zeitgeist is what solidified my love for Chamberlins chops!
Those snare flams on the fills are 🫡
Things seem to fly on their own during his playing. Awesome
I was 11 when I first heard the pumpkins in 94. Geek USA was the song that mesmerized me. Still my favorite drummer to hear play 30 years later. Funny thing is, I play bass not drums. Lol just really get into watching videos or listening to musicians I admire.
Always a pleasure to watch him play! 🥁 👍👏
my favorite Pumpkin's song
This guy has always had an amazing pocket
So cool to hear his kit raw and without mics!
I could listen to Jimmy play all day 🎉
Us too!
Still one of my favorite drummers, Jimmy is great!
Istanbul is growing on me!
Love the Yammies with the Remos!
I was today years old when I learned of the coolest video ever recorded. I love you Remo, I’ll use no other brand.
Incredible musician 🤘
The atomic clock. My new favorite along with Jeff Porcaro
Everything I can say about his abilities I've said before. With that said I just wanna admire his kit. He really has achieved fine tuning and hand picking the best tones and quality craftsmanship with everything assembled. For me personally he has the best snare and his cymbals sound perfect
Always loved this guy
So smooth yet so powerful. JC is the best!
He's soooooooo fucking good.
He holds the sticks so gingerly. Like jazz drummer. Yet his sound is massive.
so effortless
He lays down some monster grooves for the ages
Jimmy is a phenomenal drummer and Remo heads are the very best ❣️ I happen to live in Santa Clarita btw 😊
Thank you so much, neighbor!
This is great!! For another fantastic glimpse of Jimmy, you can check out the full 1994 Pink Pop Concert on UA-cam. The camera is right above and behind him and gives you a great view of his amazing drumming.
Jimmy is the greatest.
Love what he does. That groove. That pocket. Soooo good !!~
So clean. Legend.
So glad this was filmed!!!!
Wow that drum kit is something else
Yeah, beautiful kit!
Hypnotic.
That snare is tuned so loose! I think he keeps his kick tuned hecka loose as well….. don’t hear that very often anymore
always jimmy play clean and beast
Seen in Firenze Italy....Firenze Rocks....the guy Is great and has taste.....good
Maybe the most underrated drummer in the history of rock.
Gorgeous kit!😎🥁

Best rock drummer ever
Event his Roland SPD-1P is themed in gold.✨
Unbelievable drummer, had the pleasure of seeing him live with the pumpkins, watched him and melissa for the whole gig

Efficient and understated
Incredible
Need one of these for Jellybelly :)
I’d love to watch that. I’ve only heard poor audio of it from the latest tour.
He is a clock. A groovy one.
Alfa Romeo shirt!!!
Double legend!!!
Killer, as usual...
When your drum equipment needs its own bus. 😊
