Jimmy is everything a rock drummer wants to be. Finesse, technicality, time, showmanship - he has it all. Seeing him with SP last year at Opener Festival Main Stage in Poland was one of the festival's highlights for me. The man pulled the band through the set like a 500-horsepower engine.
@@BlueHopi144 I always thought Jimmy's playing just seemed more organic; like it just poured out from him, kind of the way SRV or Hendrix played guitar. Seems like Danny Carrey had to work harder for it, and his playing sounded more methodical and contrived. I've seen them both live many times.
Well... it's not a contest.. but I've seen Peart many times, and no... with no disrespect to him or the other names being tossed around here... I think they would all defer to the mighty Neil Peart. NOBODY has ever done it better.
@@horaciosabalza5512 Lamento decepcionarte pero esa canción no la toca Jimmy, para ese entonces ya había sido expulsado de los pumpkins y Matt Walker es quien graba la batería en esa canción.
I was in a band as the drummer when I was 15 and we did smashing pumpkins covers. The guitarist gave me a tape with Gish and Simease Dreams and said learn it. That experience pushed my drumming level and jimmy left a mark on my playing.
I remember listening to Gish when I was sixteen, right at the beginning of the Seattle explosion, and instantly being drawn to the drumming. I'd practice on my little used 4 piece Ludwig for hours just trying to grasp the left handed buzz rolls, ghost notes, and keeping the meter with the hi-hat. Jimmy's just a beast. He definitely pushed me to be better. It was the little things that caught my ear; the way Jimmy just filled in all the gaps so fluently, not the big fills. Still my favorite.
What I think gets really overlooked about Jimmy - and imo makes him into the best rock drummer of all time - is how amazing his dynamic control is even at high speeds. The great dichotomy in talking about rock drumming is whether you play crazy wild stuff and risk dominating the song or keep it simple and risk not contributing as much as you could. Jimmy completely transcends that. He plays drumlines that would make Keith Moon blush but he plays them with such precise dynamics that they blend perfectly into the riff, and you don't even notice them half the time until you wonder why a fairly straight forward stretch of music sounds so amazing.
Jimmy is the best! The Smashing Pumpkins got me through high-school. Saw them live on their melancholy and the infinite sadness tour. One of the best shows and nights of my life!
Grew up idolising Jimmy, still do to this day. Great rock/fusion/grunge drummer, imo he's the best of that 90's grunge/rock era, and there were some great drummers on that scene. Cherub Rock, Today, Bullet with butterfly wings, tonight tonight, I am one, Geek USA, all of which have that inimitable Jimmy flavour. The guy is a God to me, and it's my honest opinion that his technique is getting better.
Yeah, I too think that he has gotten better over the years. The thing is, he was already a beast in the early SP years! Now he has reached the so-called 'absolute mastery' of the instrument, which allows him to do what he wants musically. Although, after all, he has always been a masterful drummer.
Yeah dude--this clip has really inspired me to get back into drumming again. I'm 50 and sold me kit when we had our 2nd kid. But his chops are literally IMPROVING as he ages. It's so inspiring.

Any time I hear a song Jimmy is playing on and I don’t know it’s him on drums I immediately recognize his playing by his beautiful double stroke snare rolls and his hi-hat constantly keeping time. I love his playing.
Those rolls are insane. I'm not even a drummer but I know exactly what you're talking about and they stand out when I hear him playing. I'm thinking... how in the f does he work those in those tiny gaps and the thing is it doesn't sound forced at all. They flow through there like the way Eddie Van Halen would throw in a guitar riff.. totally natural and unforced. You know you're dealing with a force of nature when they can make the impossible sound easy.

Yeah they do and I am trying to figure out what series these are then again he has the edges recut to either 30 degrees or round overs I don’t remember but they are fatter sounding then they would be normally.
Totally hear you. The backing track even sounds like something Steven Wilson might have recorded circa Deadwing. Both are such free, fluid players who are as interested in integrating fills and variations into their beat as they are in monster rolls into the 1. Both also love that open-shut pea-soup hihat fill. Though Gavin's complexity might be a little more methodical and imposing, whereas I find Jimmy's to be more exhilarating and off-the-cuff. Would love to hear the two of them in conversation.
Was never a pumpkins guy back in the day. I see that I've missed out in a huge way. Watched a bunch of videos of Jimmy Chamberlin the past few days, absolute top class drummer. Probably the best one out of the grunge/alternative era. Used to think Matt Cameron was the most skilled and tight player of the 90s, but I gotta say Jimmy has him beat. Absolutely one of the greats ! 👍 a lot of swing and finesse to his playing. Also look and listen 🎧 to him playing with tone. So few rock drummers play with tone like this.

He's the best drummer I've ever heard in incorporating flams compositionally. His use of dynamics is also incredible.

Always good to see Jimmy doing his thing. And that’s the point. It’s his f’ing thing and anyone that plays knows it’s him immediately. His ability to play for a song without diminishing the melody or structure while still imprinting the song 110% makes him, still to this day, one of the best rock drummers. Best part about him is that he can also swing like a monster. That’s where he came from. As a sober addict for 20 years myself, it’s also just beautiful to see him in better shape now then he’s ever been. Hats off to a legend. Full stop.
