The prices on side-by-side have skyrocketed to the point that I could buy a used mid-sized truck far cheaper. I own a Kawasaki 4010 and love it, but because of the price gouging at dealerships, I think that I'll keep mine another 10 years. It's riduclous.
I bought the tractor first (rk55 cab). Couldn't justify the price tag on a side by side when I can buy a decent shape 4x4 Toyota for less $$. Especially when a decently kitted out SxS is $20k
We brought the tractor first and then the 4x4 with a dump bed . We also put a werch on the front of the 4x4 with a four-wheel drive as well. The tractor has a backhoe attachment as well. It's really nice to have it to dig deep wholes!!
My wife and I just retired and bought a farm. There is no rush for us to build a productive farm quickly but that is our long term (next 24 months) goal. We are putting in a small garden for our own use with a self propelled tiller. I have limited mobility issues right now, so we went with the side by side. So our situation is a bit different, otherwise would have bought a sub compact tractor for our 10 acre farm. Thanks for the video.
We only have a tractor. My only regret is not getting a bigger 1, we use our little kubota for a lot but don’t have a lot of attachments. My husband says I need a side by side but I’m cheap and don’t mind walking and I have a gorilla cart that I pull a bunch of different things in.
I have a Honda Recon and use it with a small garden size trailer for hauling my tools around; it will also tow my 6x8' trailer if I need to haul larger items. I rent a JD tractor when I need one. I have been WANTI"NG a sxs but can get by with the Recon.
I lived on 165 timbered acres up until a few years ago. I bought a tractor first and didn't get a UTV until 8 years later. A brush hog mower (keep trails open) and a front end loader were critical. I could have likely gotten by without the UTV but got one for hunting and it was very helpful around the place.
We started with a 35 hp JD tractor, later added a Honda Rancher quad and a few years ago got a 4 seat side by side. Like you said, the tractor does a lot of heavy lifting, dragging, digging chores. The side by side gets used multiple times every day for general getting around. Quad is mostly used now for towing a tank sprayer and a drag for the round pen. 👍🏻👍🏻
We use the heck out of our kubota tractor. Loader, arm, mowing deck, pallet forks, post digger, the roll bar has been modified to hold spools of wires. The 4whlr is nice for smaller spaces but really has only a winch use for light jobs. The tractor is much more versatile for us.
Well in my opinion the tractor is essential because it is very versatile and it will provide ways of working the land like tillers for the gardens, sprayers, and a bucket to help move the heavy stuff around. I was fortunate to have both on my current property and the side by side is good for moving things around quicker and maybe even keeping up with some light yard work, but the tractor is what I use to do everything else, plow the fields, move dirt, till the ground, level up the driveway, dig up trees to move, pull the heavy dump cart I have, etc. I also do own an ATV and I find using that to get around is also easier as well because of its small foot print and ease of use. I can go to other fields and scout them out for future projects, I can pull my trailer around to pick up yard debris from a storm ⛈️ or even put my toolbox on it to get it to my machines as they break. I mean yes everything has its purpose but bottom line is when it comes to what you need I would go with a nice tractor first.
I first bought a 1964 MF50 tractor (for 2K), a flail mower, and a box blade. When I was ready, I bought a LS MT225HE with a detachable backhoe. Trying to decide on a side by side or a 4 wheeler next (money is always a factor).
We made the mistake of buying a fairly large John Deer first. It was too large for our 7 acre goat dairy. I couldn't get into the stalls to clean them. We then purchased two Trail Wagons, one for using the bed that dumps for stall cleaning, and one for hauling milk to the house. I'm still having to hand clean the stalls. I'd love to have a small tractor that I could get into the stalls with a dump empliment.
Good point. Sometimes (and I’ve done it) we buy what we think we need only to find out over time it’s not the exact solution to our problem. Thanks for watching
If your buying land just for hunting you can get by with a ATV or SXS with a trailer, I you plan on developing your property you absolutely need a tractor with attachments.
Great video topic. One I wrestled with for a while. I have my grandfather's old diesel tractor without a loader. Picking up a ranger 6x6 for firewood and work purposes today. I think a skid loader or a compact loader tractor may be in my future
It absolutely depends on the farms existing conditions and what you need to do to get projects done to put the farm into service. If an existing farm already in operation and mostly maintenance type projects it likely would be advantageous to go with the side by side...
A sxs is great for taking the trash out to the dumpster to the front of the property. The tractor is great for moving the dumpster anywhere you want on the property. They're both make life easier and I think they're both basically essential but... if one is more essential than the other it's definitely a tractor. One good rainfall that brings mud across the property or floods you out, fallen tree, having to dig or clear or anything like that the tractor is a lifesaver. It makes unmanageable jobs manageable. The sxs makes manageable everyday jobs easier and more manageable. You can be more efficient and get more done with a good reliable farm/ranch vehicle. Depending on how your property is laid out you could accomplish a lot of that with your pickup truck or even an ATV if you already have one of those.
I have a 1964 case 430 still runs fine . That side by side will be scrap long before that . Get the tractor . Buy an old electric golf cart for running around .
My Husband I bought a used Quad 1st only due to the cost of a tractor. When we could afford it we bought a cheaper tractor ( foreign job) which did ok and finally last year got a nice Kubota tractor which we use all the time. Wish we could have bought that 1st !
Which is the best side by side or sub compact etc tractor for home steading, moving, snow blower, towing etc if tractor which brand for n America. Thanks.
They are starting to come out with attachments for UTVs. The seeder attachment i saw was 40" across so quite small... but its enough for a 1-2 acre garden. They had a 2 blade 0.5m plow attachment as well. For the UTV i think ease of repair is a positive. If you have the tools to repair a car then you can repair the UTV.
1. How much diesel tdoes the tractor consume per hour and a regular handling? 2. How much diesel tdoes the UTV consume per hour and a regular handling? 3. Does the UTV can pull out some decent sized trailers ?
Exactly the question I am asking right now. Thank you for helping me answer it. I have equipment I can rent at a reasonable rate and right now I have a lot of small jobs so I am planning on buying the Kubota Sidekick first and then a tractor.

I really want a flair mower those are so sweet.
you stated that you cant get a box blade for a Side by Side or many implements for a side by side that you can get for a tractor. With the exception of the front loader, you can get nearly every implement for a Side by side that is available for a tractor. Instead of being PTO driven, they have their own gas engine. There are some great companies like Swisher and Kuntz Acrease that make many types of pull behind flail , bush hog as well as finish mowers, 3 point and other items. As you mentioned a side by side is lighter and can get on softer ground that a tractor can not. with the available implements for a side by side an even greater tool.but, a tractor is stronger
An ATV is nice but to be able to have the ability to accomplish several different jobs, I have a 50 hp wide front end tractor with four wheel drive, front end bucket, three point hitch, PTO and several attachments. There is no comparison.
I think most people with a side by side just have it as a toy and they're deluding themselves into thinking it's useful. It's just a glorified golf cart. On a small acre farm, I'll just walk and save thousands of dollars. Or by a pickup truck for cheaper and more versatility
You have obviously never used one. I run ground drive equipment with mine, box scraper, disc, small plows, trailers, log arch, ect.
