- What's the best 1st piece of equipment for a new property owner or homesteader? It's a tough call. In this video I talk about what I did, and what I would do differently depending on budget. This is my recommendation for people in a similar land situation as mine - under 100 acres, a mix of woods, open land, yard, and home.

Thank you! We are excited and nervous. Would your advice about the tractor change IF you had a baby/young child that would have to be near you while you worked on it (maybe baby wearing or sitting with you)? I have a 10month old and would love to get pregnant again in the fall or next spring. I'm wondering if a side by side might be better for that reason but can I clear brush, haul rocks and wood, till, and mow with it?@@PurpleCollarLife

They make a crazy amount of accessories for atv's and I'm not talking gun racks. Winches, snow plows, box blades, tow behind mowers, tillers.... I have a Honda Big Red (yeah, 3 wheeler) and that's how I started. It's cheaper to start that way in my opinion and if you can only have one, you can just about do it all. However I will admit, jack of all trades, master of none... but what isn't a compromise?
Okay, I'm jealous! The old Honda Big Red is my favorite 3-wheeler. I had a Honda 185 ATC, but it was not nearly as cool as the Big Red with a drive shaft, reverse, and two ranges! I see a Big Red come up on Facebook every once in a while. The prices of course are crazy. But they're such a great machine.
Great video! Your story and my story are almost identical. First I had Ford 8N and the same foreman you have, same color even. Then I traded the 8N for a new John Deere similar to today's 3035 with HST. Also had a John Deere riding mower which I still have today. We had 15 acres in central MN but now live on a city lot. Great information for those starting out or even upgrading.

That's great! You'll love the 8N. They can do so much and 3-point attachments are pretty easy to find on the used market. For our 8N, we have a back blade, cement mixer, 5' finish mower, carry-all, post hole auger, boom lift, receiver hitch, and sickle bar. Keep us posted on your new land and the Ford 8N! Congrats.
That shed is impressive! Lol! It seems this video was made exactly for my needs! We have a new land (88 acres). Then we have an old Case 430 with a loader. Good for forestry work and snow removal. Then the not so small Bolens HT23 for mowing. Then also the small Cub Cadet, again for mowing. We don't need to maintain the hayfield, it's being taken care of by a neighbor. Then we need to move around the property. The tractors are too slow. Then as you said, an UTV or an ATV be the best thing? We are seriously looking for a UTV at this moment. Mate, a great video. Money is an issue.
We started our farming effectively three years ago. I had at my disposal a wheel barrow and hand tools.
It would be tough to plant hundreds of macadamia trees with this equipment. So we have steadily bought a few machines, firstly a ride on mower I destroyed but learned from. Then a bigger 4wd mower that is old and great. Then a trailer, then a Club Car Carryall 295. Its a great machine and being 4WD with a Kubota diesel engine, has plenty of grunt.
We still need a tractor, one rated at around 40 HP. Maybe in 2021.

Thanks for posting videos. I watched the one on cutting down the rotten leaning tree. Though in the comments there was a bit of criticism I thought you did a good job. My farm is fairly clear of trees except in a few places. We will have to cut down a few trees here and there. I've cut down a few smaller ones which went well but the big eucalyptus trees are a different level. These ones get up to 30 meters tall and are huge, containing an enormous amount of wood. I think for one I'm going to cut it down then heap most of the branches around the stump, leave it for a while to dry out then burn it to get rid of the wood and hopefully the stump.
Without a tractor it will be a lot of physical work but if time is taken it should be okay. My chainsaw only has a 16 inch bar and is battery powered. Its pretty good but I think I might need a petrol powered chainsaw for bigger trees like this.
In relation to this video I think for my situation a mower is the number one machine. As the planted trees grow the only foreseeable maintenance is mowing grass, pruning trees, mulching trees and applying compost or fertilizer. A mower can help with all tasks except for pruning which is a manual job. However having the Club Car UTV is really good as both my wife and I can get around the orchard a lot easier and its easier to carry stuff on its tray than with the mower towing a trailer.

first thing is definitely a tractor. Front end loader is a necessity. My first tractor didn't have it.

You’re 100% right about that! I used to see them (back when we made the video) more around that price range. Now I’m seeing them at crazy prices. I think I saw one for $5500 the other day. I’m pretty sure that’s more than I paid for mine way back when!
It has been a while since you put this out - but it was perfect for what I am looking for - good comparison accross all categories! We just purchased a house and 16 acres of mostly wooded, hilly property with several creek beds in the woods that I would like to work on clearing out the underbrush and fallen timber. Is a tractor able to navigate that sort of terrain? Or would a ATV/UTV be better for that? can a bushhog even be used in hilly terrain? Sorry if these are dumb questions - this is new to me.
First of all, CONGRATULATIONS on being a property owner! In my mind, there is no better investment. I love having my own land. And it sounds like you have a nice mix of property, like we do - with creeks and woods.
As far as navigation around fallen timber and through difficult terrain - my ATV does best. But for WORKING in those areas, I'd prefer a sub compact tractor with a front end loader, or an old farm tractor like our Ford 8N. Those machines will give you better ability to haul out firewood and make/clear new paths. A brush hog can be used in some hilly terrain - if you have a tractor heavy enough (with enough ballast and low center of gravity). If it's REALLY hilly, you may need to use something like a Ventrac. Everyone's definition of hilly is different. You certainly don't want to be in a situation where you're putting yourself in danger when trying to clear the brush. There are some grades where our Ford 8N, even with the weights on the front, feels a little squirrely when we have the bush hog on the back.

@PurpleCollarLife thanks for the response. After watching some more videos of folks using a compact tractor in woodland I’m pretty sure that is what I will be starting with. My son does a lot with animals and we have just gotten some goats. They are amazing for clearing any terrain. Eat poison ivy and poop out fertilizer, win/win!
@@stevetruesdale3790 That’s great! Keep us posted on what compact tractors you look at. We did some nice reviews on the RK25, RK37 and RK55. And we have really used our John Deere 2210. There’s several videos about it on our channel also. All-in-all - a compact tractor is a machine that you’ll find 1000 uses for.
