Thanks for both the amazing sounds and the timestamps. Big youtubers with millions of followers cant give us basic timestamps on an hour long video and you gave us all of them which made it easy to find the parts I wanted to go back and re listen to. I am waiting for my microcosm to ship and already saving for the nightsky, and then maybe the chase bliss mood. I feel like with some combination of those 3 pedals I could get lost for years in ambient sounds.
I love your live demos. They’re just brilliant. I especially really, really appreciate the short explanations. Super helpful and inspiring. Keep it coming 🚀👍🙏
@@logimite7174 Ok, you can even tip on an end of a TS guitar cable and still get sth interesting. That's true. STill, not sure what BONAS intended to say with his riddle.
in this environment what exactly gives more results between the big sky, the night sky or the microcosm? more answers and comparisons are much appreciated! thanks
Dude. This was like listening to what it might feel like to let go of a spaceship and drift off into the night… epic. I LOVED the ascend and out… I mean it was all great, but the intensity, loud in my headphones was just fan fucking tastic!!
Subharmonicon as "inspiration machine" - YES!!! Not easy to make it bend to your will, better to jump in, swim around and explore, but ready to capture the magic if possible. As you have done here - nice! Looks like you posted this the day after my birthday, so I'll consider it a late birthday present 🎂
Jay, it looks like I’ve been pre-empted with the superlatives. What a fabulous sound, and watching the process and reading the comments is instructional and inspiring. Thank you 🙏
1:32 Shakers of the future. Despite the Sub’s unpredictability, you came up with something that feels plenty musical. You got the cousins together! If you use a DFAM for hi hats, I’ve got a ton of stuff you should buy! Jajaja Sweet piece, plenty o’ chill.
sweet coincidences galore, this beautiful soundtrack of yours evolving in perfect step with the underwater scenes of a quirky retro sci-fi film I've stumbled across on TV filling the rest of my monitor, sound muted ("The Neptune Factor" w/a bizarre cast including Ernest Borgnine and Ben Gazzara, circa early '70s.) An accidental Dark Side/Wizard of Oz sort of thing, thanks to your good sounds.
@@JayHosking its a goofy one, the closeups of saltwater aquarium fauna 'attacking' their vessel best sync w/your music. Better movie for syncing to is Fantastic Voyage, like every scene aligns perfectly w/synth explorations, cheers...
Lovely stuff as always Jay! I find the Subharmonicon makes for a great accompaniment to the NDLR - often providing a steady chordy rhythm that interplays really nicely with the arps - would love to see how you work with the two.
You have to control the start/stop on each units independently? Doesn't the M32 start when you start the Subh? Also, thank you for re-igniting my previously faded interest in the Subharmonicon... haha. That NightSky sounds incredible too... It's amazing how important good effects are but it's hard to prioritize them over fun sound making devices...
Nice deep dimensions! Beautiful. Question: i never understood really if it's also possible (possible of course, but if the quality is the same) to route the sound into daw and then use a vst reverb, like valhalla. Or do you think there is a problem with the latency? Or are those pedals way better for analog gear? Greetings.
It is possible. If you have an external soundcard like a focusrite you can connect the mono output of the mother-32 and the mono output of the subharmonicon into it via input 1 and input 2. Then in you DAW you create new audio tracks that are linked to input 1 and input 2 of your soundcard. Then you add the VSTs on your track and you can experience quite the same thing I think. If you have a midi controller then you can map midi cc to some VSTs parameters and you will have quite the same physical experiment. For the problem of latency I do not have experiments or figures that would say it is unreasonable to do it. Depends if you want to hear the raw signal of synth at the same time as output of effect I will say. (I mean outside of the dry/wet mechanism of effects)
You'll introduce some latency, but not necessarily that much, and not anything that can't be easily fixed. Valhalla sounds great. Use it if it's for you! The main reason I use pedals is because they're fun and you get direct, hands-on control. But do whatever works for you! And thanks for the kind words.
This is wonderful, for real!! Can I ask you something? i see when the low part starts you say it's the fourth oscillator for the subharmonicon but i see you're mostly moving a knob from the mother32. Can i ask you why? I love the low part and i'm looking for a synth with such a beautiful low sound from a while... so basically i want to know if it's the sub to do that or the m32, because i want to buy something with that beautiful low sound... thank you!
The low parts are definitely the Subharmonicon, with the deepest bass introduced from the last oscillator around 2:30. To introduce them, I need only turn up the volume of the oscillator, which is why I don't have to spend much time fussing with them on the Subharmonicon. Hope that helps, and thanks!
Hi Jay, lovely, I also have the subharmonicon+m32 duo and looking for some good pedals for it. What's your opinion on the nightsky? you say its unpredictable, is this a good thing? The nightsky doesnt have a delay right? did you also try adding delay to the subharmonicon or is it already so poyrythmic that its a bit 'too much'?
Yes, unpredictable in a good way. It does not have a separate delay, although you can hear delay lines baked into the reverb algorithm. I really love the NightSky's sound. It's dark and warm and complements analog synths like the Subharmonicon well. I'm sure delay on the Subharmonicon would sound great, but you're right that it would get a lot busier. Best of luck!

Great track and performance. I appreciate the comments in the video, it makes it a real learning experience.
Dude this is soooo fucking good you have to be the best synth composer on the planet rn....and I definitely mean that....
That was a pleasure. Thank you.

With Microcosm and NightSky you can pick just about any synth and trigger some random notes and get some interesting results.
you could put mic feedback through it and it would sound good

One word: WOW! This piece made my day. A big Thank You!
Nightsky Microcosm and Empress are just magical units.
Your compositions and sense of ear are truly inspiring. It is hard to grasp that you are performing live inprov sessions.
What a wall of glorious sound. The build was awesome. Nice work.
Man, this is absolutely stunning! It's crazy how dense it gets towards the end with just 2 synths! 👏👏👏

So, so good! Absolutely beautiful progression throughout, but my gosh does it ever get special in that build up. Just stunning. Bravo!
So beautiful, they make such rich sound with the reverb
Incredible jam!
So so good and educational too! Very well done on many levels
This is so beautiful, very touching! Thanks for sharing it 🖤
Aspiring, inspirative and educative at the samé time. such a marwellous setup 💫

All are in my wishlist or is it just you make every instrument sound amazing 🙂
Love all your stuff!
Just wow!
Great sound - but having the mother, dfam and subharmonicon too, I guess it's more due to the Strymon and the Microcosm :-)

Very nice indeed...

Jay, great work! One question - what are you using for note generation?
The Subharmonicon and Mother 32 both have their own sequencers, which are running here. I've just tweaked them to taste. And thanks!

I use the Allen & Heath Qu-16 for most of my recordings, unless it's a small/portable setup. And thanks!

that was great. reminded me of Halo a little bit.
Fucking amazing....
I have the full lineup of moog semi modular, but all I make with it is ear candy. Not one song!
