A live, semi-improvised track performed entirely on hardware.
Dreadbox was kind enough to send along the Nymphes a little early to me, and I couldn't have been more excited. While I have the Abyss, I've been hoping for a new Dreadbox polysynth that's more widely available for a long time.
And the Nymphes doesn't disappoint. It's unbelievably small but with a super sturdy build and great fader throw lengths. It has a lot of secondary functions but it's dead easy to navigate, and still feels more hands-on than the Dreadbox Typhon (another great small synth). And most importantly of all, it has a beautiful sound with tons of character and some great particular nooks and crannies in its timbres. A warm analog polysynth the size of a paperback book? I love it.
I've also got lots to say on the Tasty Chips GR-1, but I'm planning to do a video with it in the near future, so more then. Suffice it to say for now that I love it and that it's a perfect companion for ambient work.
Dreadbox Nymphes through Strymon NightSky - Main synth
Tasty Chips GR-1 through Empress Reverb - Ambient granular goodness
Arturia Keystep - MIDI controller for the Nymphes
Performed and recorded live, with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.

Ooooooh geez ! I love the GR-1. Seems like something you could use to make ultra lush sounds from literally anything . Someday when I mortgage my organs to the black market ......... such a gorgeous sounding machine .
Im slowly, but surely , falling in love with that GR-1- it sneaks up on you - like a good Jay Hosking tune ,-
Not the same thing, but a poor-man's version might be the Borderlands iOS app.
I saw this video and I fell in love. The Nymphes is coming home. Thanks for the beautiful music 🙏🏻😊
I think it's amazing that they could fit a great sounding, 6 note polysynth in a package this small. Certainly great for desktop jams!
oh man, that outro... so good
Im gonna be honest. I revisit this sometimes. You're a true inspiration. Im moving together with my girl over these weeks because shes pregnant with our child.
I seek for grand beauty in life and these things are amongst it.
I charge up on your music, and envision the things to come, looking forward more and more.
Ive dropped a chaotic lifestyle including multiple drug addictions. And now life seems to evolve for me going the right direction.
And listening to this little piece just before i go to bed with the things in mind, is more powerful than any physical or mental stimuli. Ive learnt to face the music so to speak.
I just wanted to share it with you as a message of good energy and love. And I really hope you will make more in this alleyway because it is so damn beautiful the half could be enough, yet you exceed and amaze.
Thank you very much, and I Hope youre doing well 😎😊👍
Thank you so much for sharing this with me. It means the world to hear that I can positively contribute to that "right direction" you mention. I'm sure there will be more like this coming. All the best.
What an absolutely beautiful comment. 😊
Jay this is probably the best jam I've ever seen on UA-cam, just two synths but such an enormous sound. Goosebumps.
I'm not sure which I like more nymphes or take 5. You manage to make the sound absolutely fantastic.
Amazing sounds! I'm really thinking about getting the nymphes.
Beautiful, the GR-1 really adds something special to the atmosphere.
amongst the best ambient ive ever heard literally
youre talented as fuck
as for the nymphes its pretty baffling that its at that price point, good job dreadbox it sounds incredible
that was wonderful. you made my night. thank you
Bruh amazing second time listening I think this will be a song I listen to regularly throughout my life
This is great. Love the build and the mood. This is also the first time I've really loved what I've heard come out of the Nymphes. 😍
So good!
gorgeous as always. I actually just paired my Nymphes with Night Sky. Such a perfect combo
xx months later, still one of the most moving works
That’s a lovely gear collection! Great sound & composition.
Amazing how good this sounds. It combines simplicity and complexity.
Excellent stuff! I particularly love the atmospheric background sounds...
If this was in a bad movie, it would make it a good movie. Suuuuch a vibe
It sounds so mesmerizing!
Very cool man. Very cool.
I’ve listened to this 5 times in a row now. I love this.
Very nice!
Dude you are definitely the best synth composer in the solar system, possibly the milky way all of your stuff is top notch...
Holy crap dude! I love this! Is it ok if I use some of your ambient synth songs as background music in a video/film project I'm working on? I feel like this would fit perfectly with the general theme and feel that I would be going for. I would of course make sure to credit you for it. It would likely end up being a multi-part ARG series that I would post on a new channel. I wouldn't expect to make any money off of it at least in the beginning since I don't know how well they would perform. As I make progress I could go into more detail about what I'm working on and I could send you some clips that I put together so you could see how I end up implementing it if I can get it to turn out good. Thanks for reading, Great stuff!
Absolutely brilliant portable Compact set up. Absolutely love dreadbox. Looking at the Nymphes. But currently have the Typhon. Would be so great to scale down more. Thank you for sharing your art it was very enjoyable. Obviously not just for ambient. These inspire me to score science fiction, ot horror films. I guess not having a screen. And only reverb. Helps keep the price down. 🙏💜🐈
Merry christmas!
Thanks! Merry Christmas to you!
Nice setup (Loving all those devices) and wonderful performance. ty
Thanks!
Holy smokes! Thanks so much!
I know it’s one year since that you posted this. But i still want to appreciate you… always hits me like first time….
ouaouzers dude amazing vid thank you
Opening lines are reminiscent of For Now I Am Winter by Olafur Arnalds - and that makes me happy cause I love that and I THINK he used his juno 60 (or maybe his polysix but I don't profess to know the sound signature of these intimately).
Anyway long story short - GORGEOUS as usual Jay.
Nightsky & Nymphes... Hmm space on my controller keyboard case...
Great performance, Jay. And nice demo of the Nymphes's capabilities. Cognitive neuroscientists know no-brainers better than anyone when they see them.
This made me chuckle!
Splendid
so I recently got my studio set up and listening to your songs through there was amazing
i was well, but now I feel excellent. Beautiful.
This made me get the night sky. So good on synths and guitar. Tried frippertronics with an El capistan on sos mode. As the loop degrades All through the night sky. Epic. Nymphes is last synth for a while. It’s a winner. Thx Jay. Ur Super talented
I bought the nymphes as well. It’s a winning combo
very cool!
Perfect !!
great !!!!
Beautiful performance, thank you.
BRAVO ! EMINENT ! Hoskingianna in the highest🔥😘
Love it, got a new sub mate
thank you for the music! the two together sound amazing.
Fantastic work, Jay!
This is pure beauty dude!
Beautiful!!

HAUNTING..., very somber... and without resolution on last note. KOOL. THANKS!
Great music, thank you for this moment.
Had to get my GR1 from Germany and pay a huge amount in import duty. BUT IT WAS WORTH IT!! Great demo by the way!
This is delicious
Supernice!
This sounds so beautiful. Thank you.
Your stuff always sounds great, keep it up
Subscribed! Love all the ambient stuff.
I noticed you've used a couple different keystep models and was wondering, is the keybed on the mini keystep the same as the one on the keystep pro (just less of them obviously)?
Sick timbres
Dude! Your music it’s awesome 👏 make more every weekend 🔥
Nymphes is such an odd device. It can map aftertouch to chord type, and has a UI so complex that even Loopop can't operate it reliably. It seems okay for basic polysynth duty though, with the core functions being reasonably straightforward. And the basics are most of what people really need. But as a firmware author who designs interfaces for embedded devices, I'd like to have a talk with the Dreadbox team sometime.
This is beautiful!
Damn that sounded so nice! 😎
Solid jam Jay. Happy Holidays!
Happy holidays to you!
beatiful, Id wish the nymphes had a stereo reverb, woulb be a instant buy then..
It's a mono output! Add your choice of chorus pedal and reverb/delay and it's a true beauty. (The built in reverb is pretty disappointing)
Outstanding 👌🏻
amazing as always
An only mono polysynth with reverb? Interesting. Beautiful ascending patch
What a lovely pairing of the granular synth with the Nymphes, and the duo of effect boxes. Is there a 12 minute version? 😄
Hah! Maybe one day. More of both coming, though!
That sounds so good. Hearing Nymphes may increase my GAS!
Amazing
The gr-1 sounds interesting, but I wonder if a 1010 lemon drop could sit in that spot and still get good results at a fraction of the cost
Never tried the Lemon Drop, but people love the 1010 stuff. I would miss the interface, but you could be right!
This is beautiful! If I may ask - so does it work this way that the companies reach out to you and provide their gear for a bit so that you could play with it for a little?
Usually, I sell gear and use that money to buy other gear, which I sell in turn to buy others. Through this I've been trying a lot of gear and finding what works best for me. On very rare occasion, a company will send me a piece of gear, and I just keep it, but that almost never happens. And thanks!
SUPER !!!
Nice!
Very nice!
Very very nice
NICE! Are you running all outs into a mixer?
Directly into the audio interface on this one. I was travelling (hence the different setting)
Sounds great. Love your videos! Just one question. For your live workflow, what do you use for recording and all the I/O ? Some mixer or audio interface for recommendation?
Keep going please! Your setups are always great and sound perfect.
I use the Allen & Heath Qu-16, which does double duty as mixer and audio interface. That way I don't have to turn on the computer until the very last step. And thanks!
@@JayHosking fantastica mesa debe de sonar con una calidad empirica
Hey ya.. Chillastic!! 😎😍😎 insta subbed for sure.. Good one! Geez cya
Lovely, how do find the Nymphes?
I really like it, and think it's a great addition to a table-top setup.
@@JayHosking Yeah it does sound great, I'm tempted
Thanks to you, I would say… Solely thanks to you, My nymphes recently arrived in the mail. It would mean so much if you could share your settings for this incredible patch with me! Or if it’s for sale, so be it! Thanks. Mark
Hey! That's amazing. I'm sorry, but I don't have the parameters written down anywhere. It's simply a saw with a slow attack, the filter cutoff turned down, and then a slow envelope on the filter to open it up.
That’s very helpful, Jay! I’ll work on it. Your track, more or less became an anthem. Nymphes is such a wonderful, unique-sounding synth.
Very nice! Just one suggestion, but of course I don't mean to say it's a 'rule' or anything. But anyway, be careful with using reverb in stereo. You can end up with a wide sounding unity which degrades a lot of the instrument's punch up the middle-which is achieved via mono. Mono is more often better than stereo until the final mastering. Then again, this is just a 'jam' so it's kinda like 'why not'. And, of course, the rules (in a creative field) are, that there are no rules. :DD
♥️♥️♥️
United nation of melancholics ❤️ .
Just in time for the holidays!
@@JayHosking I love dreadbox typhon ! Nymphes is my next add ! And I can not live without Minitaur ! Love what you do ! You are like ambient Cure or Smiths when you song writing ! It’s like a best spiritual shrink ! ❤️
It is important to understand that with all those effects you could just fart instead of playing Nymphes and it would sound equally good. Note: I do have all the same pedals + Nymphes, except of GR-1 which I replace with Microcosm.
Can you fart in key? Even chords? 🙃
@@ambiyond1155 Yes. But always Sharp...
@@ambiyond1155 You just need to produce a sound and with a shimmer you could get 5th, 7th etc semitones of it. Long or infinite sustain in the reverb will keep your notes on so it will create a chord. Simple as that )))
@@ambiyond1155 Yes but with underwear Diminished
Fart into Valhalla shimmer or
Massive for absolutely the way drone sound.
This is beautiful. I enjoyed every second of this, great work! I'm sure they are all excellent synths/effects, but it takes someone with both great taste and a lot of knowledge to make something like this.
listened to this on a rainy ocean morning, went so well with the vibe! thank you!
holy...this nymphes looks so simple, but sounds unbelievable warm and tight...maybe it's its simplicity that makes it unique.
This does so so well!!! Thx Jay 🙏🏻🌈🕊✨🌿🌸🦄
I listen to this track, on average, about 3 times per day. I suppose I will until the day comes when my Nymphes arrives in the mail.
This song is perfection.
1- GR1+Empress+Nymphes+Nightsky+Keystep = 2391 eur
2- Arturia Polybrute = 2444 eur
With that configuration I consider the following what to choose ?
Polybrute is currently a bomb in the ambient field
I have lost track of how many times I listened to this.
y yo
Gosh yes those Strymon pedals are brilliant aren't they. Thank you for the beautiful music it was lovely. Hope you're well. But as I'm no longer working because I'm not well. I can't afford expensive pedals anymore full stops on one of those guys that have have a couple of Zoom Ms-Cdr's. And my old verbzilla. Which I think still works fine. Some of this mini Alesis, and boss rack effects. In the 1980s and early 1990s. My country only got 3% of the world's total musical output to listen too. I'm so grateful for websites like UA-cam and SoundCloud. But some of the best music is made by unsigned artist. I don't like having music sold at me, if you know what I mean. I mean obviously I would buy someone's work. That's respect. I like to find the hidden gems like this. Aren't Dreadbox great! Lol. And on q Sonicstate reviewing of. Nymhpes, he said that everyone seems to be moving to Berlin, because he said
Dreadbox might be. So I said to Nick when are you going? Lol. And when I finally have the courage. I'll start uploading some of my music
Beautiful Jay, once again, my gratitude for your gift to us all. Times have been tough on this little rock in the galaxy, what you do makes a huge difference to us.
Well shit. This was niceeeee. Im not usually going for the ambient stuff, either.
Can anyone tell me which chords he’s playing? Would love to learn some new chords
Im curious about your chord progression, it was so beautiful
Here's a new comment/question: At just about the moment of clicking BUY on the Empress Reverb, I got sidetracked by the Strymon NightSky...way sidetracked. So, the old Going to a Deserted Island (deserted but all electrical needed for a killer studio) and. you can only take one. Rats. Which would you take with you, Empress or NightSky? Thanks!
Empress. It's far more versatile, and works better as a traditional reverb. NightSky is special and does a few things really well, but the Empress is hard to beat as an all-arounder.
@@JayHosking thank you, Sir.
I, too am persuaded that Empress Reverb will amount to Max Joy Per Studio Hour.
Something about the physical appearance of NightSky that’s intoxicating! Perhaps I’ll buy a large, suitable for framing portrait of NightSky…to go wit my new Empress Reverb.
Thanks!
Mark
I had to resort to PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY (a HAMMOND B3); got too old to be effective on either end of the Roll-R-Carry Dolly. I gotta make a new comment, so bye.
Another truly gorgeous piece Jay!
Amazing work friend😊
Really nice. Thanks.
Man, I just keep coming back to this video, it’s heavenly. I love my GR-1, use it mostly for longform drone pieces, but I love the way you’ve paired it with the Nymphes to give this piece so much more movement & depth with the samples you’ve chosen. Awesome.
