Classic Mini Mk1 Conversion - From 1989 Mk4 Classic Mini to Mk1 - Part 33

  • Classic Mini Mk1 Conversion episode this week we fabricate a Mk1 door pillar on our 1989 Mk4 Classic Mini. The early Mk1 and Mk2 classic Mini’s had the iconic design of external hinges fitted to their small and light weight doors. The Mk1 and Mk2 doors are quite a bit smaller in size and shape to the newer mk3 onward classic Mini doors, they are also quite a bit lighter in weight as they don’t carry any mechanism for a wind up window. This also cuts down on the amount of metal needed to support this design, so as you will notice in the video, the Mk1 doors are a lot more simple in design.
    In this episode you will see some of the work and fabrication needed to fit the 1960’s external hinged Classic Mini Mk1 doors, to a newer Mk3 onward Mini.
    Huge thank you for watching.

    When I started tinkering with Mini bodywork back in the 1960's, I soon became aware there are not many 'straight' bits 😅... Makes it very tricky to get things lined up.. You chaps have got it all weighed off and your work this week has my 'excellent' stamp of approval. Looking forward to the next episode.

    I never realised that there were so many differences from the early body shell to the last of them. Height of the doors, smaller back window etc etc. Did they lengthen the A,B and C pillars,ie raise the roof to give more headroom?

    • @upbuild4397
      @upbuild4397  4 роки тому

      Hi! Yeah it’s amazing all the little differences, the body is the same size but they just had a bit of extra metal work above the doors. I made a infill panel for the drivers door, that’s in an earlier episode. 👍👍

We bought the car complete as a runner, and we were just going to tidy it up a bit and enjoy it. But then we decided we wanted a bit of a project and it seemed as though this hadn’t been done before, converting a newer Mini to a Mk1, so it kind of spiralled from there. We like a challenge haha!

    Would it be possible to drop the whole roof down to meet the height of the MKI door frame? I believe the glass is all smaller in height as well.
    Alternatively cut down the roof to make a Mini Sprint, these look fantastic.

    • @upbuild4397
      @upbuild4397  4 роки тому +1

      Hi! That’s an interesting thought, I suppose it would be possible but I don’t imagine it would be any less work, probably more in fact. The Mk1 shell is the same size, only with smaller doors so has a piece of metal above the doors and rear quarter windows. The way we’re fitting the doors with that infill panel will make it look perfectly the same as a Mk1, which is what we’re going for. 👍
