Classic Mini Mk1 Conversion - Replacing Classic Mini Rear Quarter Panel - Part 34
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 жов 2024
- Classic Mini Mk1 Conversion episode this week we remove the rear quarter panel and begin fitting the new Mk1 quarter panel. We also fabricate a Mk1 B pillar on our 1989 Mk4 Classic Mini.
The early Mk1 and Mk2 classic Mini’s had the iconic design of external hinges fitted to their small and light weight doors. The Mk1 and Mk2 doors are quite a bit smaller in size and shape to the newer mk3 onward classic Mini doors, they are also quite a bit lighter in weight as they don’t carry any mechanism for a wind up window. This also cuts down on the amount of metal material needed to support this design, so as you will notice in the video, the Mk1 doors are a lot more simple in design.
In this episode you will see some of the work and fabrication needed to fit the 1960’s external hinged Classic Mini Mk1 doors, to a newer Mk3 onward Mini.
Huge thank you for watching.

You know if you don’t post one week I am going to be so lost 😊 you have invited us in and we are enjoying every cut, weld, fit re fit that you do to ensure a great job is done. Keep safe . Cheers from down/under 😊
Haha! I’ll do my best to make sure I don’t miss a week then 👍👍 Thank you very much 👍
Thanks for the explanation on the door fit and I see how the drip rail masks the size of the infills.
It's progressing very well. 👍
Hi! Not a problem, quite a few people had mentioned it on the comments, so I want to explain about it 👍👍
As always, another great example of attention to detail and quality work. If it's worth doing, do it right and you are excelling.Looking forward to the next post.
Ah thank you very much 👍👍
Great weather for it lads 😀👍 your dad is great character always in good form having a little laugh and chuckle you can see hes really enjoying the work on the car .great project lads 😀👍
Hi! Ah thank you 👍👍 yeah weather was great.
Fantastic. Thanks so much for these videos. Also it’s lovely to watch Dad and his boy working on a project. Dad you must be quite proud! Waiting for the next episode!
Been watching from the “shadows” & decided that this channel is 💯 % worth subscribing to. As a retired forty year panel beater, I’m very impressed with how you are approaching this project. After having bought my first Mini Cooper back in the mid 1960’s & having owned several over the years, I’ve just treated myself to a fully restored 1968 Mini Cooper S. It’s a matching numbers car with an amazing history.
Looking forward to seeing the Mk4 to Mk1 conversion and thoroughly enjoyed going through the previous videos. You’re an inspiration and consider me subscribed.
Ah wow that’s fantastic, thank you very much 👍👍 really appreciate that especially come from a professional, thank you very much. Honestly this is a hobby that is all mostly self taught, and what my Dad have past on too, I’m really enjoying the project and definitely learning a lot along the way. Thank you for subscribing 👍👍 and congratulations on getting your Mk1 Cooper S, that sound fantastic. Really appreciate your comment.
Cheers.
G'day guys Kevin here from Australia. Another great video it's great watching this mini transform. This episode is like key hole surgery but every little bit brings you that little bit closer.
Remember to look after your dad and cherish the memories and the bond you two have.
Anyhoo stay safe and stay well.
🌻 peace guys. ✌
Ah thank you very much, always really appreciate 👍👍 take car.
Another week, another good update, keep battling on fellas, hope the weather stays kind and you can still tinker outdoors where possible.
So I guess at some point we can look forward to seeing a MK1 extended gutter rail welded on The attention to detail is spellbinding!
Hi! Thank you very much 👍 yeah we’ll get them fitted soon, just need to do a little alteration to the holes in the gutter for Mk1 too.
Lovely job. Your dad still has some arms on him. He was a proper working man.
Haha! Definitely 👍👍
Fantastic partnership you have with your father, love the approach👍👍👍
The attention to detail on this whole conversion is second to non, really highlights what a work of art the MK1 shells really are. Keep up the good work and great videos
Hi! Thank you very much 👍👍 yeah it’s great working on all the changes of the Mk1 shell.
Excellent fabrication work , amazing attention to detail, give your dad a thumbs up 👍🏻 from me .
Hi! Thank you, will do 👍👍
Cracking! You'll need a 1960s "private" plate now!! Ask your Dad if he knows what a "mackem" and a "tackem" are... Cheers, Leigh.
Definitely going to get a private plate 👍 haha I’ll ask my Dad what that is in the morning, intrigued.
Great job gents, keep up the good work
bill USA Your Great. made my day.Like your work as usually .also like to see your dad in back ground when he does,t know he is on camera great!
Haha! That’s fantastic cheers 👍👍
Hi guys, great video and fantastic job. A friend of mine as one of the original MK 1s from new, he actually learn to drive in it and pass his driving test. I will introduce him to your channel. ✌️🇬🇧👍☕☕
Hi! Thank you very much 👍👍 Ah that’s great, I’d be really interested to see what he think 👍
Nice work, really enjoying this build👍
I did think that door frame top piece was too deep but now you've explained about the illusion of that gutter extension it now makes sense👍
Hi! Yeah it not until you get quite close to the Mk1 it’s so noticeable.
Another neat job Thanks for sharing
Another good shift and another great vidoe lads, UA-cams's no.1 mini channel by miles, you make us feel involved with the build others as if we're just watching.
That’s fantastic, really pleased to hear that, it’s exactly what I’m always try to achieve 😃. Thank you for posting that 👍👍
Coming on now lads. Great upload.
Good video guys im a panel beater so know what it’s like to modify panels. Take my hat off to you. Good work 👍
Hi! Ah wow! high praise coming form yourself as a professional panel beater, really appreciate that thank you 👍👍. It’s just a hobby for me, but something I really enjoy doing, just enjoy having a go.

Cracking job as always boys! Can't wait for the next one.
Another good job guys, keep up the great work
That B-pillar piece looks remarkably like the opposite side A-pillar piece. lol
It is, it’s a Jam panel repair panel.
Never new there was so many changes between mk1 mini and mk2
good morning all with kf for and you ? nice vidéo in family!!! very nice for mi the job is great! thank for you partage welcome to massilia wiwith MK1, I HAVE BRITISH OPEN AND MAIFAYR, REBUILT MI TOO §
Fantastic work always amazing to see it progressing!!
Hi! Thank you 👍👍
I'm following this for quite a while now, and boy i like it!
The speed of the new episodes coming is just also great! I'm doing a mini restoration myself, an MK3 from 1980 with an automatic transmission. I just have the next question: What is the black Paint that u use on the innerside of the mini? and what made u choose for hamerite kurust? how does it perform under the high heat caused by welding?
Once again, just great and i will keep whatching:)
Hi! That’s fantastic, thank you very much 👍👍. The black paint is car body paint to stop things from going rusty, if just left in primer it would rust and the etch primer is porous, apoxy primer would be better but we don’t have any at the moment. The kurust seam very good, I’ve use it a lot over the years and always found it good, I usually always put it on after we’ve welded any areas.
Cheers 👍
Thanks for the video. . Great work
Your both making great progress, 👍🏻
More nice work , you have the patience of jobe
Coming along nicely!.... I don't have a garage so 'rain is stopping play'... Nicer the next few days we hope ;
Ah weather has been terrible hasn’t it?! none stop rain. Can you get a popup gazebo maybe?, we were thinking about one.
@@upbuild4397 Terraced... Gahh! ;
too Savvy 7
Fantastic work as always. On to the WeetaBix this time I see lol. With all the leftover metalwork you could maybe make and sell a few medallions perhaps. :)
You should also make and weld in a cuppa holder to the temporary support structure.
Haha love the cup holder idea 👍👍
@@upbuild4397 You got it wrong, not a cup holder, a cuppa holder lol
Haha
Great job lads really cumin on doing amazing job
I think you're crazy but superb job, keep it up!
Haha! we like a challenge 👍👍
Love the video. When fitting the new B pillar section what happens to the old B pillar that you covered over?
Hi! Some of it gets tied in to the new section and some of it trimmed and reshape. I will show this bit in the next episode, still working on it this week. Thank you 👍👍
Australian english is hard to understand but the job done is perfect.
I have nearly caught up with this build. Loving sharing this journey. Inside the rear companion bins are some brackets, I presume they are seatbelt brackets. What are your plans for that?
Hi! Ah that’s great, thank you very much 👍👍, there’re quite a few episodes built up on it now. We’ll need to keep all the seatbelt for the MOT as it will still be tested as a 1989 Mini.
Thank you for watching 👍👍
I always wince when you pull the mini out .The garage door is soooooo close to the roof 😂
Do you do this car stuff for a living??
Haha! yeah it’s close. It’s just been a longtime hobby for me but my Dad’s been involved in car mechanics and fabrication quality a bit.
You probably have fitted it but didn't see it in vlog was the rear sill stiffener
Always a pleasure to watch you both piecing it all together. Once again your attention to detail is commendable. Are you going to attempt the front part of the tunnel ? As you'll know it's another distinctive difference on Mk 1's and 2's. The bulge that accommodated the floor starter button on the very early cars and the slightly different gear leaver cut-out (on Coopers) , or are you going for the magic wand gear-change ? Looking forward to the next episode..
My memory is not what it was but your comment stirs something ....did the MK1 have a left foot high beam switch on the floor?
@@Ralph2 Yes it did Ralph...But they did away with it in 1967 and went to steering column dip beam switches in preparation for the introduction of the Mk2. I hated the floor dip switch ..Thought it was distracting ..Much better near the steering wheel.
@@pda49184 thanks Pete
Hi! We would like to change the floor but not sure if this panel is available. That’s interesting, I didn’t know the cut-out was different still on the cooper. Will need to look a bit more into this.
@@upbuild4397 When I was involved in a conversion we managed to get the front floor tunnel from a Mk 1 being scrapped .. Here's a link a whole Mk 1 tunnel.. Bit expensive ! www.minisport.com/mcr12-31-04-75-round-shaped-floor-tunnel-panel-for-mini-mk1-models-with-remote-gear-change.html
I'm Kicking myself, I had the doc's and plate's and Vin for 64 MK1. I got the shell (rotten) for an engine transplant into a mk2. Are you putting a private reg on?
Proluxelectronics what are you suggesting?🤣
I'm curious, why are you converting from mk2 to mk1? Seems like a lot of extra work.
I was going to ask the same question (actually its a mk4 to mk1). I presume with all this work you are putting into it (and the excellent quality of that work, especially in a drive/home garage) that you intend to keep it. But if you ever sell then wont that be more difficult as it's not a real mk1? Couldn't you have found a mk1 to restore?
...'cos a genuine Mk1 is like rocking horse shit and worth ten times the Mk2, 3, 4.....
Great vids but the car is like triggers broom!
Hi! Thank you 👍👍 haha definitely not much of the original car left, still the same car though haha 👍
👍👍👍👌
Should the title not be classic mini Mk 4 conversion to a Mk1 mini shell rather than the other way around, The work you have
done to this shell is top notch and i applaud what you have achieved but try the title the other way around and see if it makes
a difference to the views just out of interest, You have have built a great channel and all credit to you both, UA-cam as you
know is very click bait oriented so it would be interseting to see if it would make any difference to your views or subs.
It would be nice if you could shout out a few lower views mini channels to help them along. Cheers Dave
Hi! Thank you very much, it has been a very enjoyable project. That’s an interesting thought on the title, might give it a go, thanks for the thought 👍.
There are so many variables with how to improve views and being recognised. I put a lot of time and preparation into editing my videos, as I’m sure you do also. For me I feel this is really important, and of course you have to enjoy it. I typically spend between 10-12 hours in just editing each video, sometimes more, then there’s the time filming it. I might run over things sometimes three or four times to get what I want, also time researching and setting it out on UA-cam with cards, end cards, descriptions, titles, thumbnails, tags etc.
My aim is always to make something very enjoyable to watch, I want my viewers to feel like they’re actually in the garage with us working on the project too, being immersed in it. I really appreciate that I have a lot to learn in this process and I’m far from any expert at it. I believe this is what helps massively with people viewing your videos and also being consistent with all of this, obviously like I mentioned earlier, there are a lot of additional variables.
I suppose the point I’m trying to make is that I put a lot of effort in and I feel it’s unfair to just pass that hard work and effort around giving shout outs if others aren’t put the same effort in.
I hope this kind of explains the point I’m trying to make, this was meant in a very friendly context, please don’t see it any other way. As you know I have given you a couple of shout outs and mentioned you in many of my comments on a host of different channels that I follow. I’m not adverse to giving credit where it’s due.
Thanks
Mark.
Mark, I don‘t spend that much time with the editing ( Which shows i know ) one because i‘m shit with computers
and two i would rather us my time on my restorations. I do agree and your correct in what you say about making
good content and a good video footage but to me as long as i feel like i am helping someone it‘s all worth it,
Cheers Dave
You have such perfect setup where you are, your workshops are fantastic. People love seeing stuff like this and restoring a Jaguar XK 150 in them! People dream of stuff like this, so watching it is a pleasure. I reckon it would be well worth putting extra time into doing some high quality videos documenting this restoration. Definitely need a good quality high resolution picture of the whole car in the thumbnail so that it’s clear for people to see what it is. I’m so sure this could do very well if documented right. Plus people like seeing the work happening, I’ve always thought giving Amir a camera, maybe a Gopro on a gorilla tripod to easily move around with him to capture the process of his work etc. There’s so much potential in this restoration and it would create some incredible content.
Cheers
Mark.
;
I get what your trying to achieve why don’t you get a roof off a mark one and do a top chop a lot less work to get the same result
I imagine finding a Mk1-Mk2 would be a challenge, plus it would be cheap, that would still leave the A and B pillar needing changing which is where most of the work is. Really it’s about the challenge and do something different for us and for people to watch. 👍
Thanks for the reply
I totally understand. Keep up the great work just like to ask questions I can not answer myself
I'm having many problems watching this video. It keeps freezing. I have very fast broadband so no problem there. Is anyone else having this issue?
Just you i guess?
no guard on that grinder? They dont call cutting disks "death disks" for nothing.
you puit your cutting disc on the wrong way round. they are designed to spin a certain direction
Hi! What makes you think that ?
@@upbuild4397 there is an arrow on the disc and usually it means that the side with the label is up
This isn't so much a restoration as using the old mini as a template for building a completely new one!
Haha! That’s probably a better way of looking at it 👍
Excellent work as always. Keep up the good work!
