Revisiting the Quarterback & draft pick trade between the Lions & Rams. Both Matthew Stafford & jared Goff have been great on their new teams with Sean McVay & Dan Campbell. How the Lions hit on all the draft picks they accumulated with players like Jahmyr Gibbs & Sam LaPorta is crazy.

This is the ultimate goal of most big NFL trades. One team is in a winning window and needs an immediate upgrade to help them reach that championship, and the other team needs a younger replacement and additional assets to aid in a long-term rebuild. Similar types of trades have happened before, but they've almost never worked out this well for both teams involved.

@@MarkLeBay The ceiling is there, and maybe the Rams could have done it while the Lions could have built their new core around an aging Stafford, but the tricky thing with trades like this is that the psychological elements and scheme fit elements mean that had the trade not happened, Goff might have regressed further, or the Rams' offense might have sputtered, or the Lions might have kept languishing in mediocrity with Stafford.
Sometimes the change of scenery and scheme really does guys good. It's not even about whether or not, say, McVay wasn't doing a good job with Goff, it might have just been that McVay's system and his style of coaching wasn't the best fit for getting the most out of him, while Campbell's is.
Overall, this is the Good Ending that you hope to see out of a trade if you're neutral to friendly to either or both teams. Maybe not if you're a fan of one of their rivals, I guess.

I definitely felt bad we had to meet in the playoffs how we did, but it really played a great narrative of burying the "Same Old Lions" in the past by beating Stafford. It was like our retribution arc, to finally officially move on from our past and embrace the future. What the Rams might have realized was that only three quarterbacks ever won a Super Bowl as a starter after losing in their first appearance as a starter. Len Dawson, Bob Griese, and John Elway all won Super Bowls as starters after losing in their first Super Bowl start.
What Detroit realized was that they needed to hit the reset button after the Matt Patricia error and have a short- and long-term solution at quarterback.
In the end, this trade has worked wonders for both teams. The Rams got a Super Bowl and the Lions are now among the NFL's elite teams.

Largely as a result of this trade, each team was able to reach a level of success they hadn't since the '90s: the Rams won a Super Bowl for the first time in 22 years and the Lions reached the NFC championship game for the first time in 32 years. After a brief Super Bowl hangover (partially caused by an injury to Stafford), the Rams appear poised to contend in the NFC again, while the Lions have a young corps captained by fan favorite JA-RED GOFF and look to still be on the up and up. I'd say it's probably the fairest high-profile trade in terms of benefit to both sides in my lifetime.

I always thought he was serviceable and that he could play well, but damn did he ever blow away my expectations after that rough first season. Come 2023 he's completely changed my mind on worrying about the future and I'm fully embracing the Goff train to keep seeing how far he can take us, because I don't think just reaching the NFC Championship game once is enough for him. • @LordPichuPal
    @LordPichuPal 28 днів тому +2

Biggest thing about this trade from the Detroit standpoint was that after we got rid of Quin-tricia and hit the reset button, we knew we were going into full rebuild mode. So Holmes approached Stafford after taking the job and was like "hey, where do you want to go?" The crux of the whole thing is that we wanted to do right by Stafford as gratitude for all he'd done here, and knew he wouldn't want to waste his final years on another rebuild. Even Stafford shared that sentiment saying he knew it was best for the team and himself to move on. What unfolded was arguably the most balanced trade ever made because the Rams got a Super Bowl with our longtime guy, and we've embraced Goff for all he's been able to accomplish in such a short time, along with all those great picks in the draft.
Even if we don't ultimately win a ring with Goff, he's already done so much for this franchise and we couldn't be any more thankful to him for what he's accomplished. Never in my life have I seen this much optimism and hope with this team until 2023 began, and moreso after the run we went on. On the flip side I am happy for Stafford that he got that Super Bowl ring he had been chasing, and can finally get the respect he deserved from more than just Lions fans. It's really impressive just how well it's panned out even just 3 years later.

He's gonna go down as of the greatest here for getting them to a Conference Championship, but if he somehow gets the team to the Super Bowl, let alone wins it, he could become the all-time greatest Detroit Sports Legend. That's how much we want a Super Bowl here

I was never really hyped for Goff. When he was in LA, it seemed like - and I am sorry to say this - they were successful despite him or rather with him not because of him. However, over the years I really began to like him and, as a Packers fan, I love that the Lions became more than competitive. Honestly, the NFC North feels kinda strong and I am looking forward to some tough games.

I didn't believe the Lions would take a QB in the draft after trading for Goff. I knew we would start him. Based on how Holmes and Campbell talked about him, he was going to stick around.
I am so glad he's my QB. Due to Goff, I got to see something I've never seen in my life: The Lions winning a playoff game. Imploding in the NFCCG hurt, but we'll be back this year.

I have never been so happy as to be as wrong as I was about Goff. I have also never flip flopped on a player as much as I have on Goff. I thought "we get an acceptable QB to fill in for Stafford until we can draft a guy. 2 years and gone". Then Goff came in and killed it. Goff is my QB1. I will always be a Stafford fan, and I will always root for him when not playing Detroit. But Goff is my QB.
I think both teams made out perfectly. Rams got a Super Bowl. If you ask any Lions fan "would you give up a QB and 2 first round picks for a Super Bowl win?", we take that every time. Detroit became a whole new team. I am a die hard Lions fan of 55. I have been through so so so many "we got the right coach finally", and "we finally got our QB", that I can't even keep count anymore. Brad Holmes, the killer sniper of the draft, and Motor City Dan Campbell, the greatest coach the Lions have ever had (sorry Wayne Fontes), have changed everything here in Detroit. I may actually see a Super Bowl before I die.

If anyone is curious who were the players that were taken with the actual picks belonging to the Rams, well ... one was a bust, the other is OK, but not a "set the world on fire" type of player.
The Lions traded up with the Vikings to get Jameson Williams, who ended up with the 1st round pick originally belonging to the Rams. The Vikings selected DB Lewis Cine, who is pretty much considered a bust at this point of his career.
The Lions traded down with the Cardinals for the Jahmyr Gibbs pick, and cause the Rams fell off a cliff after Super Bowl 56, it ended up being 6th overall, which the Cardinals used to select OT Paris Johnson Jr. Not exactly a sexy pick, but I respect teams that invest in protection for their QB.

    • @davidagledhill

The Lions also drafted Sam LaPorta with the extra pick they got for trading down to 12 and Gibbs. Also with the third round pick they got in 2021 from the Rams they draft Melifonwu who is becoming a very good safety. Jamo did also cost 32 (Rams pick), 34 (Christian Watson which was traded to GB) and 66 (Asomoah). Lions also got back 46 (John Paschal) from the Vikings. Your breakdown was very incomplete.

As a michigander and often reluctant lions fan, I was cautiously optimistic when the trade went down. Stafford was getting older and had mounting injuries, so we had to move. Even going into year two, many around me were shitting on Goff, but I was one of the few in my group to blame the lack of weapons rather than his performance. I thought he would be a bridge QB until we drafted someone. I never would have thought he might be the one to break Bobby Lane's curse!

I think Stafford was better in his prime but right now they're fairly equal as far as abilities, kind of a different set of skills though, Stafford is not a mobile QB by any means but he can move around in the pocket better, at least in his youth. I've heard about these stats comparisons but does that in an equal amount of games, after all Stafford has missed a lot of games, especially in 2022 and that have the Lions that 6th round pick with Gibbs and Laporta net gain. That definitely moved the needle in the Lions direction in who won that trade but that is another reason Goff has an edge, he's still he has at least 4 or 5 more years while Stafford will probably retire within the next 2 seasons I'm guessing but it won't be an equal trade till Goff wins that SB. It was a good trade no for both teams no doubt, Rams got their SB and the Lions finally got a legit rebuild, due in part to that trade
