This may sound like a total idiotic thing to say, but I’m just getting into fishing and my girlfriend’s 9 year old is/was the main reason. I searched for this type of info but no one seems to post it. Probably because it’s “common sense” to most. I genuinely appreciate you putting this up for extreme beginners like me. Thank you. You gained a subscriber with alerts instantly after this video.

Best bluegill bait... period... live crickets

    • @dennispersinger4120

Crickets are the best bait for bluegill, then millwork, then red worms, then whatever you wanna use. I don't feel you actually fish for bluegill as much as you want us to believe. People are creating content just to create. Sad

Wax worms by far are the best Bluegill bait, Crappies also like wax worms, you can catch a good mix of Bluegills and crappie on them. I have even caught Catfish on them when fishing for Bluegills.

A small worm is number one imo, so effective, but an overlooked gem is caterpillars that are free and easy to collect. Those gypsy moth, or "tent" caterpillars, when they get large enough, work VERY well. Just a 'pillar on a number 8 hook, cast out 10 to 15 feet and wait for the line to tweak indicating you've got a bite. If there is overhanging trees, so much the better. The hairs can irritate some people, like me (it makes me feel like I've been handling fiberglass insulation), but the results are worth it.

I had been taking hours to a catch bluegill for cut bait to catch catfish out of my lake using what is essentially crappie bait, which makes for a very long and drawn out process. I watch your video and fifteen minutes later I was in a store buying corn, thirty minutes later I quickly caught a bluegill and within the hour I had a ten pound catfish on the line. Thanks.

I use wax worms on an ice fishing jig. Works great, and they rarely swallow the hook, but when they do, it's easy to remove with needle nose pliers and doesn't hurt the fish. That's important, because I'm usually catching bluegills to use for flathead bait.

  • @LightEyeNDN

i second the EarthWorms they work EXTREMELY well...My personal opinion on setup is put a small bobber about 18 to 20 inches above the hook and put a split shot about 6 inches or so above the hook...it gives your hook up ratio a way better chance also like the tip said in the video always use 4 lb test or below if you use something for example 6 to 8 pound test...your chances of catching panfish is way slimmer because the fish are scared of the thicker line they are more finicky so good luck fishing anglers HAVE FUN and as always Stay Hooked Up

  • @naturalverities

For me, a bead head nymph wet fly under a bobber or cast with a light fly rod outfishes any food bait I have ever tried, is super cost-effective, and seems to attract the larger gillies better too. You can even put a bit of food bait on the hook as extra enticement, and still have a good chance of a hookup after the little thieves inevitably steal it. Better yet, go for a popper and a dropper fly to double your chances. Love me some fried gillies!

Interesting tips. I use my Zebco Dock demon as is. I think it's 6-8 lbs test with no bobber and I catch the little bluegills, smallies, and even rock bass on bread and worms. One time I was catching tiny bluegills and a 4 lbs bass took the bluegill on my hook, dragged it to the other side of the dock, spit it out, then came back for it on the original side of the dock. Keep in mind, was using the smallest hook I had and somehow, the planets aligned right and the hook was lodged in the bass's mouth and my line didn't snap.

Got a Dock Demon for a couple nearby small ponds. Love it. Had to swap out the line, though. It's loaded with 4lb mono and the fish went after it instead of the bait, so I threw in some Pline floroclear 4lb. Works like a champ on crappie, gills and smallmouth.

Am a tarantula keeper also a pacman frog keeper.. I feed them dubia roaches.. Whenever my dubia roach population explodes, i use em for fishing.. It works like a charm.. I even give most of em to my fellow fisherman friends who really don't mind handling this species of roach as live bait, better than freezing half of my roach colony in a freezer just to throw em away to waist..

I found too that the bright orange or white color fishbite's work great for bluegill and I out fished my friend of him using small redworms! One small cutout I've used caught 9 nice bluegill and still because of the nature of fishbite's construction, had used only one tiny piece for 9 fish caught. The bait stayed very secure, and cut into a single tiny strip 1/4 inches using Owner Mosquito Hooks size 8 & size 6 hooks. Tight lines everyone. 👍

Bottom line is that when they are biting, they will bite on anything. When they aren't biting, they won't bite on anything. I just use tube jigs and save the expense of buying live bait that may just get wasted anyway. You can also use corn along with a tube jig. Just open a can and take a few dozen kernels with you, and leave the rest in the refrigerator to have something to eat later if you don't catch anything. Better than wasting food.
