A tribute to Dane Westby and the Yamalube/Westby Racing team and their efforts in the 2014 AMA Pro Daytona Sportbike Championship. Rest in peace Dane, forever in our hearts.
I was on a Qatar Airline flight from New York to Doha Qatar and Stay Gold song was on the music play list.I immediately played it and remembered Dane.RIP Brother
Makes you feel something you chose to ignore. Watching this video makes me remember seeing his bike being painted and wondering who it was for, who was the wolverine, watching him win that rain race hands down and thinking "I see why he is The Wolverine" I remember seeing the reaction of his team when he climb the top stairs. You saw the passion in everyones eyes the blood sweat and tears. It was like I lived the moment with them even if for a second. He was going places, he was going places. This video is a perfect tribute. I don't think I'll watch it ever again. I don't have the heart for it.
What an awesome talent. You will be missed Dane. We got the chance to chat with him at Mid Ohio last year. It was a weekend goal to get a picture of my boy Kade with the Broasters chicken. And Dane was around and we got a few shot of Kade and Dane together. Those moments mean a lot to a dad. Rest in peace Dane. To family and friends. The Fosters in Indiana are very sorry for your loss.
In 2006 we were racing the WERA Summit Point 6 Hour, me and Jeff Kramer and we needed a 3rd rider. I had never seen Dane and never heard of him and he and Trig never heard of me. We had a 2006 ZX10 that was pretty quick and at some tracks it was superior but usually it ran wide and did not have the chassis of a Suzuki or Yamaha until Kawasaki found their ah ha chassis. Dane had never ridden a liter bike was my understanding but I thought he looked great and I asked Trig if he could ride w/us. Dane rode marvelously for his experience and we were in second over all until Jeff had to out brake 6 riders and binned it in turn 1. We still had a fair day and I learned to really enjoy Dane because he was ...Dane. I never saw him again but we fondly followed his career and rooted for him until we heard of his accident. That day me and the kids prayed the whole Rosary for Dane and Trig. Even though I really didn't "know" him, I miss him. Good kid Trig.
Godspeed Wolverine. I'll always remember you stopping by our campsite at Road America and just being a down to earth dude. (when he tries on the elvis masks in the video, those were part of our group's campsites)
We are all going to miss you Dane. We met him in Turn One at Daytona 2 years ago while watching the XR1200's. Scott Russell was giving him some coaching and support. Dane was very friendly, happy, humble....just a great guy and very friendly to a couple of fans who were rooting for him. Every single one of us race fans are going to miss you. Godspeed!
Thanks for the wonderful tribute! He was one of my favorites! Took several selfies with him and wish I knew how to share them! Wish I knew the conclusion of how he died. Last I heard, he apparently was avoiding from hitting something, causing him to lose control of his bike. I love and miss him!
