- Before you replace your starter, you need to know if it's the right time or not. In this guide, we'll run through the signs and symptoms of a bad starter - from clicking or grinding, to slow cranking, or no cranking at all. And we'll help you learn how to rule out other possible parts that may be causing the issue, like your alternator.

This video is simple, to the point, and perfect for getting helpful info
EXCELLENT VIDEO, because it 1) explains first what the problem or symptoms are. 2) then the basic steps to check BEFORE replacing the starter, and 3) safety!
Other videos on UA-cam are mostly crappy!
I watched several videos hoping for an easy fix... this was the bomb! The sound was just like my Camery...swapped with new one in less than thirty minutes!! Tks Auto Zone!!!
Thank you, it was my battery, and Auto Zone took care of it!
Nice, thanks Auto Zone. Informative video. Will be taking my vehicle to your store for a checkup on my starter today....if I can get my fucking car started to get over there :/
lol
Could my starter be bad even though the testing machine says it is good?
That was cool that was a very helpful thank you. 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
That's exactly what it was. thanks for helping me identifying it. The starter was replaced.
very good!!! big help.
Helpful video thanks
Great info :)
Nearly had it all covered, but I'd like to add a a bit more info. While electrical system complexity is understood, must distinguish between functions & components of the ignition & charging operations. Even a "starter" is more complex than merely a single unit & may be modularized into distinct components of an assembly. The associated solenoid, motor/clutch, & else are usually included in a large housing, but some may be separated; so ensure entire assembly is brought for a shop test. Thx.
This guy reminds me of my old PE teacher.
Technically sound. Like the testing approaches, especially free check of starter in store.
I have a scooter. What if my starter sounds normal and turn the engine over very nicely but still won't start the engine - YET, starts just fine when I use the kick start or while a battery charger is on the BRAND NEW, FULLY CHRAGED battery?
Nice friend
Is the teeth on my starter suppose to turn freely ? I went to advanced auto and they told me it was bad because that reason he did show me a new one and it was stiff didn’t move, then i went to autozone to test it in there machine and they tested it and they said it works ?
i start working at AZ tomorrow. I'm excitee
Bet you regret it now ! 😂

That excitement died quickly, didn’t it?
I ran over a 2x4 a week ago. My 2011 chevy aveo has been running with no issues except one. I hear a ratting noise under the car, and it has a 1 second start delay. Outside of that the car runs fine...
Turned out to be a bad stator. It should have put out about 80 AC volts to the CDI, but was only putting out about 20 AC volts. Put a new Stator in and it puts out 93 AC volts to the CDI unit.
The bad stator made my spark cold and weak and eventually the scooter wouldn't start at all. Now I have a strong, hot spark and she starts instantly. :-)
Homeboy sounds like jimmy swaggart. Lol . Very helpful info nonetheless
Wesley Akeli 😆
would be great if you didn't talk over the sounds you are trying to describe
get a hearing aid then
It's a part of the sound. If you don't hear someone talk when turning the ignition then you don't need a new starter.
wuzumaki 🤣🤣🤣
question... what about when you have that the first time it starts slow. but evertime it is different. sometimes faster and sometimes it takes 5 or more seconds. it always start though! then when i shut it off again i do it again or withing a short time it starts fast. i changed the feul regulator so that ain't it.
This sounds like what mine is doing. Did it end up being the starter
@@penguinzomzom I'm assuming you've sorted it by now but If you haven't my silvia was doing a similar thing, would crank sometimes once, sometimes would start up without even cranking and other times would crank strange.. I left it sit for a week and now it won't start it all, engine won't crank even once and when I turn the key the catalytic converter dash icon appears, If any of this is similar to yours or anyone else who's reading this's situation, I just got it diagnosed and it is supposedly the starter motor.
This video helped me like a mf, my car was making that same grinding noise and wont start so ima see if its the starter thanks AutoZone
Guys, I’m scared. In my area a starter is 900 dollars , I promised my son a computer after he got all A’s on his report card, if I don’t get it for him it’ll break his heart. What can I do
Norma Frazier Yeah... I had to pay 700 dollars to fix it, he took it well, thanks for the help.
See about a used one at your local wreaking yard. Will be less than half of a new one, maybe even cheaper..Good luck..
But the starter and tell your son to lick rocks.
so i need to remove my starter, ride the bus to the store and have it tested?
What household only has one vehicle?
Cookie monster mine
@@Cookiemonster-mi4ug mine
@@Cookiemonster-mi4ug poor ones aka mine
No take the whole car in and they can test it on the car.
Deits been having starter problems for yrs no start every month or 2 then tap it a few times and then starts
Completely unrelated...but does anyone else think that he sounds like The Governor from the Walking Dead?
Brandon Buchner
I thought he sounds and kind of looks like Flash Gordon
I can never find out anything about the starter spinning but not engaging. It doesn't always do this, but it does it enough sometimes 3-4 times before finally engaging flywheel. I took it out and jumped it, the bendix kicked out, so I put the old one back in. I keep hearing different things and shimming on one side and this and that. I don't have much money I'm waiting to start a new job and I need to be able to get there so idk what to do.
.
Traveling on a cart pulled by Oxen 🐂keeps from having to worry about a starter in the first place.
Just changed mine on a Mits Galant 04. You talk about a son of a gun to get to. 4 hours.
GET IN THE ZONE BITCHES!
friend replaced my alternator, but the car won't turn over at all with a jump it does absolutely nothing except you hear a light buzzing noise from the starter. would that indicate that the starter is bad?
If i turn my key it will crank for like 1-2 seconds and then nothing, the alternator belt moves like an inch when turning key then stops.
BreakfastSkippa what was the problem?
i cant remember was 2 years ago, something really cheap though haha
The clicking noise when turning the key occasionally happens to me.. It happens when I turn the key a little less than all the way, it can make that noise.
Nice video. I saw a post that said a rapid clicking sound indicates a dead battery. But I'm hearing that rapid clicking sound on my 1998 DeVille while it's being jumped by another car. It's doing less now than it did before I hooked it up to that other car. Have you any thoughts on this?
Charge your battery that's it
OK, Thanks.
Sounds like your batt doesnt have enough amps it will turn the motor over but not enough to fire it. Try a bigger batt with more cranking amps
Is it too much to ask for someone saying "If your starter sounds like this *insert bad starter noise* then it might be bad."
I've sifted through countless videos, and not one of them has what a bad starter sounds like.
Robert Cozby A bad starter don't always make the same noises and sometimes they make no noise. A bad starter is usually 1 solid hard click (several soft clicks is usually a battery issue) a grind can be a starter(but often time is misaligned starter that's eating your flywheels teeth and ruining it.
The most common starter noise is the 1 solid click noise.
Seems like my truck needs a new starter before it doesn't start at all!
What if you just hear whining noise from the starter but the engine won't start
I just got a new battery and if I don't drive my car for a few days, it won't start and it would sound like a really fast * click click click *. It can't be my battery cuz it's new.
Hey try checking ur alternator when they are bad they can kill ur battery
You may have a parasitic draw. If your alternator was bad, your battery would lose power while driving.
I was driving along about 40 MPH when my 2000 Hyundai Sonata just stopped. When I tried to start it just went click click click. Any ideas ? Lee Mason Aloha OR 97007
Battery
The problem is with your alternator. It is not charging the battery.
American Dad has a side job, Aha!
Lol swear
Damn, man. It's not cancer. Why so dark?
"Car clicks? Well. go ahead and make your peace with Jesus. Because, unfortunately, it could be.....your starter." Lighten up fella.
Yay just replaced my starter and STILL flickering and clicking. Now time to buy a battery.
wentaGT , you should have told auto zone to test the starter and battery.
@@yadirbear you should have post this 5 years 4 month earlier.
@@gospursgoraidernation5185 at this point he got a new car
This guy is hot!
To heck with autozone! Starters that fail after 26 days! NEVER NEVER NEVER shop at autozone! No wonder they are on the verge of bankruptcy and they totally deserve it!
we would replace them more often if your prices were lower AUTOZONE!
your not competitive , And you just price match! Why when you can go elswheres like Rock auto and amazon for cheaper parts!!! you neeed to be less greedy
East24stProductions u
Autozone on Folly Road, Charleston, SC is a piece of shit! Both battery check and starter service are charged at an expensive price.
I refuse to use your trangendered bathrooms!
