- Nashville-based guitarists Laur Joamets and Patrick Sweany got the chance to demo the new Fender '57 Custom Pro-Amp, a sonically flexible amplifier built around a vintage all-tube circuit with rich, sparkling clarity and creamy overdrive when turned up.
"The Pro, I think, is the quintessential Fender tweed amplifier. It is what the name says - it's the professional amplifier," said Sweany. "It's very versatile. It's very smooth, can get jazz tones for a jazz player, but it is a rock-and-roll machine."

Great demo guys...thanks for clarifying my next amp purchase! Classic Fender tones abound!
Just got one. Quintessential swing amp, and great blues and rock tones as well. A beast to carry around!
Those little chromatic runs that laur guy played sounded sweet! Great sounding amp.
Nice to see that they are using better coupling caps and that they all have the right orientation.
15 inch speakers have an iconic clean tone and overdrive sound. If i want something distorted ill go for a 2 or 4 x 12, but its hard to beat the clean tone of 15 inch speakers. gets an almost cocked wah sound, but not as harsh in the treble.
I need two of these.
Got one recently. Had already just bought a couple of amps so definitely took a while to convince myself to pay the hefty price for it. Finally succumb to my GAS and bought it without being able to play it first. Hard to find vids that do it justice but I had a good feeling about it. Really glad I got it. So big and clear. But still more usable at low volume than my 5e3. Which was a nice surprise. I've found a great sound running it in stereo with a 62 Princeton reissue which makes an edge of break-up dream. The pro sorts out the lows/highs/clean headroom/ full body thing and the Princeton has the more aggressive low mids/vibrato/breakup. It's a great combination. Pro around 4 vol, Princeton 5/6. Best of both worlds. Highly recommended both amps. Especially together. Get them while you can. Both out of production now.
I have had my Pro for a few years now and the 62 (assuming it's the CS signature) for several months. I have not thought of playing them in conjunction. Are you playing a single coil into both? using a splitter or just out from lo input on pro into the input of your princeton
@@PMPDISK1 I use a stereo delay pedal as a splitter but run one of the channels through an ART cleanbox to cancel the ground hum. And yeah I've got the Stapleton. I use both single coil and humbuckers.
When you say “more usable at low volume than the 5e3 deluxe” could you explain more? Is it easier to get Edge of breakup than the deluxe at home volume levels?
@@RussC123 it's just a smoother transition from zero-loud. I find the deluxe jumps up substantially just by touching the volume pot. And this is just for bedroom/apartment levels I'm talking about. Probably levels these amps were never intended for.
@@diangara3298 Thank you! I have a tweed champ and love it for quiet-ish playing but I want THAT sound in a bigger/fuller format. If going for that, would you say that’s another reason to go for the pro over the deluxe? Feel like the deluxe may be almost to similar to the champ with regard to how “big” it feels.
I love these amps, I think the 15" sounds great,I would probably prefer the twin though for what I need. I had a chance to buy one used a week or two ago and I let it slip by..now I'm pretty sad.great work on these amps. People will always have something bad to say about something. If I ever have the chance to buy one. I'd like to think it'd be the last amp I buy lol
Where is the 5E4, been waiting.
If you crank it the bass gets flubby and muddy like in a jtm ?
How does it take pedals? Is there harshness typical for tweed Fenders? Or tight compression?
for this price it should shit pedals out on demand
LOL
For fear of pissing Rick off.....this amp sound wonderful. as do all things Fender.
The 57 Twin Reissue kicks this thing's ass. Much more punchy and focused.
Heavy to
I like the Twin much better.
And yet you complain about the price of the Twin (which costs much more to make that $200). It seems that it's very hard to satisfy you very discerning tastes with these amps. Best of luck on your amp search.
get your stratocaster and play the blues-plink plink plink
Does anyone else here feel like the noiseless pickups are lifeless? Lacking that articulation that the strat is famous for?
Completely. They are worthless.
Wait a second - are those Illinois Capacitors in there!?! For the price of this amp, there is no excuse for such shit components. Fender can get away with that garbage in their standard PCB amps, but I'd expect more for $2500 USD.
Kris, those are new Fender Pure Vintage caps that are accurate reproductions of the original yellow aston capacitors. We worked very hard to get them right so I'd be careful about jumping to conclusions. I'd suggest trying them out when they arrive in stores, they sound great!
Hi Rick. Thanks for your reply. I was looking specifically at the grey power supply caps in there that say "IC" on them, so I promise you I'm not colour-blind OR jumping to conclusions. I already know that these amps are going to sound amazing, but I'll be buying the kit from Mojotone and paying someone locally to build it for me - for less than half of the Canadian price tag of $3785. Nothing against the corporate model - I know Fender's bottom line is to make money on these products, and I wish them luck. But I refuse to pay two grand for a name on the front of an amp, and mine will be sans grey capacitors. All the best! ;)
Your are absolutely right, Sir. I own a brilliant Tweed 5e3 Clone made by tubeampdoctor myself. Half the price - better components. That is a fact.
This amp was priced in 1957 at $284.50. If you calculate the USD inflation rate, it's actually not that much more expensive for today's money. I suppose it's not Fender's fault that musicians are still generally getting paid the same as they were in the 1970s. But like I said - if you're going to do the "boutique amp thing" and charge top dollar for it, maybe stay away from components that are not only considered to be the cheapest on the market, but also (and not surprisingly) known to start leaking chemicals just months after installation. :P
for this price all the components should be like NOS top quality fender. I'm not sure of fender's angle except "give me all your money and you can brag about how awesome your amp is". we all know these type of douchey players. usually aren't as good as anyone in the band so they compensate by trying to purchase skill. maybe it sounds amazing in the studio or something, but really disappointed fender would go fishing like this
15" sounds too bassy IMHO
Lauri Mattiello
I love the fifteen
me too, rock n roll machine for sure
I'm not hearing that ...
