    What you call "going for a ride" is, to me, the best part of Eldritch Horror. Your decisions do affect the game, but in weird and unpredictable ways, and that’s what in my opinion makes the game so great. It makes the game feel like a real world. In real life the choices you make almost always have weird and unpredictable consequences, and often things just happen for no apparent reason; that’s what I think the game is trying to replicate, and I think it does an amazing job at that.

      +rahdo when you said that you don't make decisions in the game thats not true.Like you decide to take the dark pack or you decide to close a portal.Or you decide to buy thing that will probably help you later on.You also you said that theres really no strategy in the game.Well thats wrong too.Theres strategy when you decide to close a portal at a certain time.Or when you decide to loose all your sanity to gain spells.

    This really helped me to decide between AH vs EH. Your line about how Arkham Horror was more about "mastering the rules vs Eldritch Horror being about mastering the game" is what tipped the scale. You do great work Richard. Thanks.

    Personally I prefer Ameritrash games like Eldritch, Arkham and Cosmic Encounter but I know there's a lot of eurofans out there. I loved loved loved Eldritch, it's a 10/10 for me and I've bought all of its expansions. Currently waiting on Strange Remnants.

    What i love about eldritch horror is that every game is different.
    We mostly win, but our journey to victory is totally different for every game.
    But some stuff repeats itself far to often.
    If i am the spy, i am for some odd reason always the one that close portals with my amazing lore skils of 1.
    if i am the sailor. i will start in Australia and still be the closest one to a dangerous portal.
    love this game, even more fun when half the bord is lost in space and the rest are cursed.

    Great review! You actually "sold" me on getting this game, the things you didn't prefer are the things we like; the game plays itself. We are "ride" folks rather than "drive" ones. Keep up the good reviews Richard, loved your guest spot on The Dice Tower a few weeks ago.

    Hmm, the two statements I read about AH that stuck with me the most were "it's the game that's playing you" and "it's not so much a game as it is an experience". I guess EH streamlining the rules so much is making it a bit more obvious that you're not really getting to do that much.
    In AH I often felt like a mechanic, desperately trying to keep the game running by dutifully watching a gazillion gears (limits, tracks, tokens, all the related triggers, etc.). Adding even just the Innsmouth expansion constantly had me going "oh no, I forgot that this would have triggered that", "I forgot to advance this track", "I should have spawned x when y happened". Every time I read someone claiming "we always play with all the expansions" I have to wonder how the heck they're pulling that off? Computer brains? Is every player being assigned his part of the convoluted rules to keep track of? (In fact, how about AH the augmented reality game, with an app keeping track of everything like the new Scotland Yard version?)
    EH is definitely less book keeping and more playing, but that also means fewer things to distract you from the fact that it's a very reactive game. Still, I like it as an "experience game" (especially since it doesn't have as many rules getting in the way). From time to time, it's nice to just "enjoy the ride"... I say while having CO2 set up behind me.
    Also, I think the structure of the rules is worthy of some congratulations. After first rolling my eyes and being worried that everything might be all over the place and a mess to find, I very much prefer this approach, because you always know exactly where to find all the details about X that you want to know: in the alphabetical reference guide under 'X'.

    I really like Arkham Horror and don't feel the need to buy a streamlined version. Fans of AH and EH must realize that what they really like is Lovecraft, not the game per se. If it had an old west theme and you had to enter saloons then come out and seal the doors it would probably get old pretty quick. The "atmospheric romp" is precisely why you play; you're just looking to spend time in the world. Don't blast Rahdo for not loving these games - his assessment is dead-on and his reasons for not liking it is the same reason we love it, so there's no disagreement.

      I'd like both to be honest, but for now I picked Eldrich as I suspect I'll get more for my money out of that starter than I would the other. I got the impression from Arkham reviews that I'd be needing expansions very quickly, while as with Eldrich it seems I can wait a while. I hope I made the right choice :D Give me a year though and I'll hopefully have everything for both. As long as this is as fun as Mansions of Madness 2nd, I'll be happy.

      He's a Eurogamer through and through so of course his Final Thoughts are going to go that way. I don't mind at all as I love his play-throughs, but I was worried that people checking out this game wouldn't realize this fact. That and I'm still trying to figure out how he hates Mage Knight so much as every single turn you have a puzzle to work through which is what he professes to love so much.

      Scott Smart I agree in that I hope people don't take my opinion to heart regarding this (or any) game. Hopefully it's really obvious that our preferred gamestyle is what turns us away from this game, not anything about the game itself.
      as for MK, actually the reasons we don't like it are the same reasons we don't like Arkham Horror - rules that are WAY WAY WAY WAY more complex than they should be. Complex for complexity's sake, and get in the way of our ability to enjoy the puzzle of the game. What I said about AH in these final thoughts applies to MK too (in our opinion): we want to master the game, not the rules... :)

      ***** That doesn't mean you can't make decisions. I think the Call of Cthulhu RPG does a better job than the FFG board games because there is more player agency in the RPG. I think even Tales of the Arabian Nights, which has less strategy than EH, is more enjoyable because you have more player agency in what your character does.

  • @Osborne4Life
    @Osborne4Life 8 років тому +5

    The whole point of Cthulhu games (and the point Lovecraft himself made in his stories) is that the player is NOT in control. Whether or not humanity is aware of the dimensional beings that exist in the universe, there's nothing they can do about it. Even the most minute of Lovecraftian Gods can cause insanity or kill with just so much as a glance of their forms. There is no "winning" in these games, there is only surviving to see another day. The actions you make signify what you may do next, but really, Elder Gods, Old Ones, they're all in control of what a drop in the bucket humanity is. So basically, these games are purposely more of a ride than a drive. You'll see players gushing more about what the story told then actual gameplay.

  • @lppknight21
    @lppknight21 11 років тому +3

    While I understand and, to some extent, agree with the whole "the game drives and you ride" analogy. I think this game has more decisions than that. I played a four player game recently and it was very challenging, we won by one round, so it was very close. We found our city selection to be very crucial and there were always many options. Whether we went for the expedition, tried for the clue, had a city encounter, etc. Also most cities give you an idea of what they do or at least what you can expect to gain from an encounter here. So I don't think it is as random as you might think. I definitely think there is a lot of game here and the story element is definitely there. Our clues matched what was going on and the encounters were great. I do agree that game does do a lot of driving. But during the action phase I feel like that is where the players are driving and in all cooperative games the game has to do some driving. All in all I just wanted to defend the game a little, I can see your issues with it and fully understand why it isn't as fun for you guys. I do think the game is really long for what it is and wish it was about an hour shorter. But I still really like it and enjoy the simplicity of it.

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  11 років тому +1

      I think it's a very well put together solid game too. In fact, if it lasted 60-90 minutes instead of 150 minutes, we'd probably consider it a keeper, but for the length it's at (which is already a problem for us) it doesn't engage quite enough. as a general rule, we'd prefer to play agents of smersh for the same storytelling but in 30% shorter time :)

    Played this today with 5 others. We played for five ours or more and lost. I think this game is challenging; we got a swine of a rumour card early on which burned through the doom track and really left us struggling. In the end we lost with two dead investigators and one pissed off Ancient One.
    We loved it. We found it challenging (more so than AH, I'd say) and can't wait to play it again!

    When me and partner play we always play as 2 investigators each. We find its the sweet spot. If I'm playing solo I'll play as 3. I once tried playing as a lone investigator once. Was very challenging because only one clue spawns abd with the movement being fairly strict it becomes difficult when you've got a mystery to solve on sjde of the board, then a rumor like the wind walker or spinner of webs which ticks down with every reckoning effect. Gates opening up everywhere causing doom to tick down. It goes south very quick when you're performing one enounter at a time and still getting slapped with the mythos card. Only upside is at least most epic monsters will only have 3 health. But RIP if you have 1 strength and 4 health.

    Your review seemed to validate my thoughts on this game. I was not a fan of Arkham Horror, and this looks as if it would leave me flat. I am not into Lovecraftian lore so maybe that is a big part of the appeal, I dont know. I loved Jen's "I don't want to go on a ride, I want to go for a drive". That is a perfect way to explain my feelings on a few games. I like to have an impact on the game. It's the sort of thing that turned me away from some video games...being 'railed' and not really having an influence on what happens. Anyway, outstanding review and thank you for saving me a little money for a change. :)

    Hey Rahdo, thanks for your input on this. Arkham Horror was one of the very first games I learned to play when I got into hobby board gaming and still one of my favorites to this day. Since then I've picked up Elder Sign and enjoyed that one as well, though not at much as Arkham Horror.
    Watching this runthough just made me realize that I really need to get my hands on a copy of Eldritch Horror to try before I come to any conclusions. It seems to be a very divisive addition to Fantasy Flight's Arkham line of products.

  • @FHBStudio
    @FHBStudio 8 років тому

    I've found this game is best played with 6 players but you'll have to increase the difficulty. The choices you can make do impact the stories in that you can increase the odds to get a pass or at least reduce a fail. It's more like a god game than an rpg where you can decide someone's fate rather than their actions. The story is on a higher level than the individual actions people do. Some story elements can take days or even weeks but in game it's only a single turn.
    It's one of my favourite games. It's simple and has smooth mechanics. We make our own stories along with the snippets that are presented to us by the game. For example, one of our investigators continuously got stuck in Siberia, huffing toxic fumes from meteorites, stumbling in the wilderness etc. Another investigator got very bad rolls the whole time so we turned him into worm food. It can be a lot of fun if you have a strong sense of imagination.

    You had such a different first-play through than my group did... Our first game took 8 hours because nobody knew the rules, and we lost a couple times before we got it figured out. I love this game, and I can't quite explain why.
    Maybe try again with some other people? Who knows? You can adjust the difficulty by choosing different people or putting harder cards in the mythos deck even.
    Atmospheric romp is a great way of describing it! I think of it as a choose-your-own-adventure book.

      It was a couple years ago that I first played this game, and it was a big part of transitioning from video games to board games. Now that I've been playing board games a couple of years, I understand what you're saying. I think you have to be in the mood to kill lots of monsters, build a powerful character, and save the world. Every now and then I just play it alone since I have trouble getting my board gaming friends to play.

      That's a very valid observation. and if you watched my top10 vid of the year I put up a few days ago (just the first 5 minutes) where i talked a bit more about Pathfinder, I literally said that we think it's not really that great a game. It's more of an activity and less of a game actually, I think I said. The thing that elevates PF in our eyes is the persistent character advancement. If it didn't have that, I expect we'd actually prefer to play EH :)

    Its harder with more players, but you're quite right that there are too few decisions to be made. Its also highly random. In one game four players characters died on the first turn, in another we steamrolled the hardest god in the game without doom advancing significantly or a single player character dying.

    Arkham an easy game with two players? Hm...not really at least not for us. But we did lose every game of Eldritch Horror as well. We found it very challenging. We love the Cthulhu Mythos and EH and AH do a perfect job by giving us the chance to be part of our own little stories.

    This going on a ride vs. drive-comparison really nails it. A friend of mine once participated in a game of Arkham Horror. As an enthusiast for strategic board games with high interaction, it obviously wasn't his cup of tea - but he never rated it on BGG, because he said: "I wouldn't know how to rate this. For me, it's not really a game. It's an experience."
    I totally agree with that. And although I like strategic games, I also like these AmiTrash-adventure games with tons of randomness and story-telling in which you never really know what happens and you cannot really control anything. And I actually still like Arkham Horror better than this one. There are tons of rules and it's hard do get into it, that's right, but it's such an amazing experience for RPG-lovers with too little time for playing real P&P RPGs.

  • @jonnymut

    I agree with most of your review except for your comments regarding Arkham Horror's rules. Arkham's rules are only convoluted because they are so badly written. If you log on to the geek, you can find a bunch of great streamlined rules that make you realize how simple Arkham actually is. Having said that, I still like Eldritch Horror because it is a bit more streamlined and plays a bit quicker.

    Honestly when I first saw this game, I was expecting something like arkham horror meets pandemic, looking at the map and the supposed greater interaction between players and how the mystery solving plays out. It's nothing of the sort, but I'm having fun playing it though, even if I don't get as immersed as say, a play-through of Village, or even Power-Grid.

    Great! You really hit every question I had when I stumbled across this video.
    I'm not really much of a board-gamer, but when I pretend to be it's Axis&Allies (15+ years now, currently 1940 Global) or chess. Began checking out "EH" because I was looking for a way to segue away from deep strategy (essentially, because there are typically more than two of us playing; shorter rather than longer games; greater sociability).
    While I generally win (humbly), I find, entering my 40's, that I'm really more interested in hanging out with friends as opposed to winning. For me, at least, that's not the point.
    That being said, my A&A friends are, well, "Eurogamers," I suppose. Sometimes our games go on for 2-3 days. They enjoy strategy, tactics, winning. I do too, but am looking for something that's less of a time investment and more of a social lubricant...
    Should mention that I'm pre-sold on the EH concept (English/Philosophy guy, Lovecraft fan).
    Given your less-than-positive assessment of EH's strategic game, guess my actual question after rambling should be: If EH is not "it," is there a game you recommend that might better serve as a bridge from/between "grognards" and casual board-gamers?

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  9 років тому

      Chris Rogers well, EH might still be a viable option for you, tbh. The more players you have (note, everything I say is through the lens of 2p experience) the more there is to juggle, I suppose. and my understanding is they're progressively added more and more hard hitting stuff to the game through expansions as well :)

    I don't really see this game as being any less tactical than, say, Pandemic. Flipping a card and getting a bad dice roll isn't much different than randomly drawing epidemics or flipping over a multiple outbreak chain that you can't do anything about before it pops. You play to your character's strengths, go to where you're most useful (or occasionally where you are most needed in an emergency) and do your best to mitigate the luck. A lot of the choices are pretty obvious in both games, imo, and you're just as beholden to how the deck plays out in Pandemic as you are EH, so I don't see how this game is "going for a ride" and Pandemic isn't (not that you said Pandemic wasn't, just using for perspective).

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  8 років тому +2

      pandemic card draws aren't random int he same way. the deck is seeded in a specifc way so you can make educated guesses and push your luck before epidemic cards come, and the refilling city deck is also something you can anticipate and plan for.

    • @borreholic
      @borreholic 6 років тому

      @@rahdo Me and wifey have the exact same general feeling as you about EH (vs. Pandemic). Gates spawn 100% at random. Clues spawn 100% at random. So no area is ever cooler than another regarding threat level. Ok, so my decisions affect the outcome, sure. The cool weapon I bought 5 rounds earlier made me able to defeat this monster just now, but it's not that I feel I can take any credit for making that particular choice...
      What if the clues at least had a draw deck à la Pandemic that reshuffled now and then, so there was *something* you could have fun trying to anticipate.

    Thanks for the video. Does play faster than AH or MoM, though those games have nice mechanics and different play style. EH is easier setup, tighter/easier rules, faster resolution (couple hours instead of 4+). I enjoy it quite a bit, I'm sure the expansions will come rolling out soon to give it some more variety/replaybility. It's fun with more players, difficulty scales up a bit with 5+.

  • @jexman100

    Am I not correct that in an earlier video in this playthrough you said your prior experience was fighting Shub twice and winning twice? If that's wrong, I apologize, but if it isn't, it seems a bit dishonest to label a game as too easy after playing the intro scenario a couple of times.
    Also, I haven't played the game, but it seems to me like the randomness of encounters vs. desire to control is handled fairly well for such a story-focused game. Every location lists what mechanical effect you can find there (like Get Improvements or whatever), while leaving the Encounter story as the fun surprise. I think that's actually a pretty clever piece of design.
    The more I get into board games the more I realize I don't fall on one side of the fence in what I enjoy, storytelling/experience/etc. vs strategy/puzzling/etc. or what-have-you. My rule is that a game has to be fun for me to like it, and so far that's as likely to be Five Tribes as it is to be Cosmic Encounter for me.

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  9 років тому

      Jexhai sorry you feel that i was dishonest, but i don't know that I agree, especially since I made clear *exactly* what my experience with the game was, and why i drew my opinion. i held nothing back, kept no secrets, and then I further added "you should *not* be swayed by my opinion" and repeatedly restated the limits of my experience with the game.
      if you feel that's an example of dishonesty on my part, well, we'll have to agree to disagree :)

      I'm not personally offended or anything, no need to defend yourself :) Your work is great; I just wasn't sure about that one statement. I don't think you did anything wrong, I suppose stating it as "dishonest" just comes from being accustomed to using strong/solid wording and sometimes forgetting to turn it off for casual internet comments.
      I'm actually really impressed by how unbiased the actual runthroughs manage to be. If I didn't understand your biases to some degree, there's many cases where I wouldn't be able to tell your opinion until the final thoughts because your always just as enthusiastic.

    Regarding Storytelling and all.
    How about Tales of the Arabian Nights and Mansions of Madness.

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  11 років тому

      arabian nights is cool, but in that one, there's NO GAME at all... it's 100% story snippet telling. no decisions other than pure whim, so we didn't keep it. mansions of madness i like a LOT, and probably would have kept it, but jen (and I) prefer to not have to control multiple characters as a general rule (will break that sometimes) plus jen wasn't crazy about the horror theme.
      agents of smersh is our goto game for storytelling co-op :)

Doesnt that translate into using 1 sanity to solve a mystery that would require spending 1 clue for example? Im just confused on that part.

    Honestly not a fan of the churning of Cthulhu themed games (Pandemic: Reign of Cthulhu....seriously?), and I hated Arkham Horror. This looks better, but it just doesn't seem there is much players do, but instead the game does, with randomness over strategy/mechanics. I could be wrong, but this is a pass for me, but still great runthrough and Final thoughts as usual. Also not a fan of FFG and making thirty expansions for their games either.

      The narrative is part of the experience. This isn't everyone's type of game honestly. Tales of Arabian Nights is purely story telling, and it's a very enjoyable game in my opinion... Even when I get stuck in prison.

    • @SuperDoggy99
      @SuperDoggy99 8 років тому +1

      Ramonosuke I have to disagree. This game has tons of strategy and dynamic mechanics. Unfortunately, you have to be more familiar with the game to even "see", or know, what options and strategic choices/synergies are available. This is the main problem with Rahdo's run through--because he hasn't played the game all that much, he just touches on the basic rules and mechanics, (and keeps rolling dice when he really shouldn't).
      Learning how to anticipate the mythos deck, manage/move assets, develop strategies for solving mysteries, handling the doom and deck timers, ... learning when/how to resolve Rumors (and when to skip them), knowing how to travel and cover the board effectively ... knowing when to press your luck with the wrong "kit" of abilities... as well as knowing where to go (and when) and building the right team of investigators to take on the Ancient One ... and so much more ... it all requires time and experience with the game.
      When you consider the fact that every turn has to be efficiently played--you only have around 4 or 5 rounds per mystery (on average)--anyone who feels they're just "along for the ride" in this game just isn't playing to win, in my opinion (or they're just new to the game).

  • @bernan1

    in revisiting this...after playing it on an app, you comments could easily apply to Agents of Smersh as far as taking a ride and not a drive. There's little decision on how you got into the brief scenario the card says...instead, you're just in it. Little to no lead up...though I think AoS is worse in that way. This is one reason I like Arabian Nights so much better. Instead of just observing, you feel more like you're in the game...part of it.
    But...if I recall correctly...you liked AoS, even though it plays very similar. I wonder how you'd compare them.

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  4 роки тому

      good comparison. i'd say they are very similar, but we enjoyed smersh a lot more because 1) the humor and theme 2) the shorter overall length and 3) the unique dice management, which we found much more interesting than the EH approach

    Is it somewhat safe to say this is a more game-y coop version of Tales of Arabian Nights then? At least in the game-playing-you feeling. • @dmcd7619
      @dmcd7619 9 років тому

      +rahdo That's interesting. While watching the videos and listening to your comments I kept thinking this looked like Pandemic, but with a different theme. Even the drive vs ride comment seems to apply to Pandemic. We like Pandemic too, but it's not like we're controlling what cards come up. It's all about how best to react to what does come up. Is that really so much different than what happens in EH? I'd like to get EH because I like theme and story, but you make it sound so boring. Our first couple plays of Pandemic were pretty boring too (my guess is because we didn't fully understand the impact of our decisions), but we kept trying it because people raved about it so much then somehow finally we liked it. Maybe that's what it takes for EH too.

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  9 років тому

      +dmcd7619 the big difference with pandemic is you do have a lot more control over your destiny, because after an epidemic, you put all the played cards on top of the draw deck, and now you have a lot of advance knowledge of what's coming, so you can make much more informed decisions than you ever can in EH :)

    • @dmcd7619
      @dmcd7619 9 років тому

      +rahdo Yeah, I figured you'd go there. If I remember Pandemic correctly, though, you're not "controlling" what cards get put back, but you do have an idea of what's coming up and how soon. Maybe just that knowledge of what's coming up makes it more of a drive than a ride (if we know what's coming then we can plan, whereas if we don't know then it's a lot harder to plan). I'll admit, it is a brilliant mechanic and probably makes the game. Not every game needs it to be enjoyable though. I still want to try EH one day. Thanks as always!

      David Folksman There's also one that drops your doom to 0 (effectively waking up the ancient one). But thankfully, all these brutal cards allow you ample time to solve them. Arkham is quite terrible... I'm sorry! I loved it to bits for years. But playing it today it feels very dated. It is VERY slow, and you often fall into a game that just drag on forever, nothing happends, you just wait for enough clues to be able to close the last 1-2 gates to win, and no gates spawn because you have sealed the most common occuring spots for gates.
    You just sit there, everyone know you are going to win, but the game keep throwing wrenches in your machinery to slow that process down... pure boring, non exciting.
