Your run throughs work very well as instructional videos and I'm very grateful for them. The fact that you tend to pause on turns and think aloud, weighing up the different options and also laying out the possible consequences of the options, really makes the difference to those learning the game. Even your tendency to rethink, and to undo certain moves, helps to make the game and its mechanisms much clearer. Many thanks for doing this!
Even though the game is “simplified,” I find the things trying to kill you - and the way they do so - to be far more aggressive than in any other base game of Pandemic. Good stuff!
I just love this game. Things can go out of control very easily. Surprisingly we find Reign of Cthulhu more difficult and interesting and when I got it, nobody knew the Cthulhu mythos (Now I love Cthulhu mythology). A month ago I had to sell my original Pandemic copy because we didn't play it anymore.
I still think this is the best Pandemic, great artwork and presentation, nice mechanics and interesting game indeed.
This is an excellent version of Pandemic... and if you are currently looking for a version to buy, this one is definitely a lot of fun, maybe a little more than base Pandemic. I won't say that the game is "simpler", since this version feels like there's a lot more threats to take into account. Sure it's smaller, but Pandemic was never super hard; most pandemic games always feel samey -- split up, set up stations at key areas, remove imminent threats, then meet up to trade and cure -- fun, but the randomness of the cards will determine whether you win or lose in Pandemic especially at higher difficulties.
This version is a bit spicier. Both are great, as they're different enough from each other.
Looks like fun! Thanks for the video Rahdo!
They should perhaps have put an insanity icon on the cards and player aid actions which involves sanity, kinda like how 13 Days has a "nuke" icon on cards that affect the DEFCON status.
Thank-You for this play through video, I have pre-ordered the game because I knew I'd like it (Cthulhu Mythos fan here) and your play through just made me even happier I ordered it. The plastic minis are an odd color but I see that it was necessary for the design team to make them that was due to the dark nature of the board, the figures are more was to spot. I am NOT a fan of Pandemic because of the very reason you stated about lots of complex puzzlely things to do, this game is far more simpler with just four colors for the towns rather than separate places. I love the Insanity die roll, that's really cool! Job well done in getting the idea across about the game play in spite of any "goofs" you made is always okay in my book, reviewing hundreds of games like you have done I'm impressed you do as well as you do.
I feel like we need some artistic person from BoardgameGeek to make us little sanity die stickers and maybe specific locations to stick onto the cards (i.e. a thematic banner with Church, Market, Hospital etc you could stick overtop of the blue cards to match them up).
As I watch this video (another awesome one of yours), I can't stop thinking to myself.... Da_n, this guy looks so much like Negan :P
Thanks for the review, great stuff!
it's a brand new day, rick!
Isn't Chuck Yeager the first pilot to ever break the sound barrier?
i think that was sam sheppard :)
Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier, Alan Shepard was the first man in space, Sam shepard is an American play write and actor. :)
Oohh, Sam played chuck in The Right Stuff. I get it.
He was credited as being the first.
first man in space was yuri gagarine
I like the randomness of the elder ones. Aside from Cthullu, you don't which ones come out from the different amount of elder ones. That makes the game interesting to me. Aside from that it looks like a neat 're-skin' of Pandemic. On that note I did see a lot of mistakes that he did for the so called 'easy' run-through.
i make a lot of mistakes in most every video i film :)
Is this the best Pandemic for 2 players? Thank you for this video.
all pandemics are equally great as 2p games. pick the one you like the theme of the most
Thank you!
Now my wife is addicted to this game and that's the only game we see on our table since I bought my copy a few weeks ago...
;-)
So are you saying that although the game is lighter or less puzzly but the experience is worthwhile? AKa worthy of purchase? Is there a way to make some house rules adjustments to make the game harder? I love eldritch by the way. It's so elegant of a game that I can't help but get it.
the game does have some simple rules to increase the difficulty of the game (basically shortening the game timer, iirc). the experience here worthwhile certainly, but just not for me and my wife
Thanks for the advice!
i'm not a fan of the color of plastic used for the shogoth and cultists this is a game who's mini's need paint
Agreed, I would've made them a darker colour, like a brown or black or grey.
landscaperben They need to contrast the dark colors on the board. I'll probably prime black and then do a few layers of red with a final, very light colored dry brush for cultists.
The color is perfect, it's a very cool, unique color. That and the dice made me buy into the game.
nice review dude!
Sorry man you're cool but complaining about reading a rule is kind of nit picky. The player aid SAYS rules for the hospital, for relic sanity rolls, right on the player card it says that you have one less action when insane. You okay too many games if you can't remember to read your cards brother!
Looks like they made it too simple... To be honest, did you loose at least once? ;-)
this runthrough was the 3rd time we played. each time we were playing on max difficulty. first time we narrowly lost, 2nd time we won, and this time i won too, but this time was totally bogus because i was making goofs that made it easier (see show notes). note: we're pretty good pandemic players :)
For a Lovecraft themed gaming evening would you rather play Pandemic: ROC or Eldritch Horror?
pandemic, no doubt
Witch of Salem is a way better game!
