- Nate Wood plays and talks about the Catalina Club kit in Blue Satin Flame.
The Gretsch Catalina Club Series blends traditional configurations and classic tone with sleek, contemporary hardware innovations. Catalina Club 4-piece configurations are built around the foundation of the beloved 14-inch deep bass drum that gives each of these setups a warm and punchy vintage tone.
Catalina Club’s hardware components give the series a distinctive “new Gretsch” flair that pays homage to the company's rich tradition, while infusing an exciting and progressive personality. From the round “gas cap” bass drum mount plate and Mini GTS mounting system to the reduced-mass tom mount brackets and Gretsch T-Wing screws and bolts, Catalina Club has an incredible drummer-friendly feel.
The classic mahogany shells are still built with the same natural shell interior and 30-degree bearing edge that made them famous. Bass drums include telescopic spurs and matching wood bass drum hoops. Toms and snare drums feature 1.6mm triple flanged hoops and all Catalina Club drums are equipped with Remo® drum heads.

If you’re over 40 and a drummer you remember this sound! What a great video showcasing that beautiful Gretsch mahogany sound
Please more Nate Wood vids, Gretsch!!! He doesn't nearly get as much features as he deserves.
Without a doubt the most important musician to me, nate wood. I love his albums.
Love the tones and finish on the new club kit. It's true Gretsch quality. I still play my Gretsch club kit in turquoise flame finish, bought new in 1969.
Listen to this on good headphones or speaker system.
These sound 100% pro
These drums make you ask "Why would I ever spend more?"
No idea how I've never heard this guy before, but I need to seek out more of him. What a lovely player.
Check out his live performances with Wayne Krantz. Incredible.
I’m in love with this kit and finish. I’m saving up for one and can’t wait to play it!!
If there's one thing that I love from Gretsch, is that they really privilege the quality of musicianship rather than the fame, putting endorsees from the underground jazz world on top.
Friend had a set at a practice space, they felt and sounded like vintage drums, but without the headaches of gigging vintage gear. I offered to buy them from him and now it's my kit. I like them. I have 12,14,20.
That snare sounds as good as the best! great rim shots
Wow, easily the best sounding, best tuned Catalina i've ever heard! Thanks you for sharing! 🙏
Great drumming. The drumkit has a wonderful sound with a fabulous blue finish. A no brainer.
I love this video. Great at all tunings. Thanks for showing
The different tunings other video's don't do that. It shows the value
of this gretsch kit
I love the look. I love the sound. I love these drums !
Sound and look awesome. Beautiful cymbals too
These drums sound great. I love these drums. You play great. Congratulations Catalina. Awesome!
I'm 58 years old and I've loved Gretsch drums since the early 70's. I somehow never got over my love for the Gretsch walnut, maple, or mahogany finishes. I've always pictured those finishes in my mind....However, this particular wrap is really nice!
I agree. Gretsch is the best drums in the world. But there are other drum companies that make drums that sound similar to Gretsch. However, there is that psychological satisfaction of the brand name too so instead of buying a great sounding clone, I would just get the real thing and call it the day
@@ramencurry6672 I did. Good call!
Just purchased this beautiful kit
This set is hard to pass up. All of the reviews are positive and the price is right. The sound is just perfect as well. And that satin blue is just killer. The tasty playing helps as well!
All the above. Thanks Jim.
Is the satin blue one of those wraps which are really unique and beautiful at 1st, then become jaded after a while? Like too much of one thing going on
These drums sound and look great. I love the sound of the mahogany Gretsch Catalina's. I had a set of Slingerland drums in a similar configuration with the blue satin flame swirl wrap as my first kit. I wish that I still had them.
You still have them. They are in your heart.
I own a Catalina club mod in black diamond pearl. I love the deep bass drum and I’ve purchased additional floor toms in the same finish - both a 14 and an 18. Most of the time I use the 12in tom wth the 14 floor only. I get plenty of low end out of it and it tunes up really easily. Killer set
This is a great sounding kit!!!!!!!!!!!
Love that finish. Wow!!!
Love that finish.
Damn this guy can play! Lovely sounding kit and cymbals too, very musical player
Nice stuff Nate ! & Nice Kit !
Damn these drums sound killer!
You hit it right on the nose when you said Gretsch drums are "inviting to play". Between their versatility and what you get for the money is astounding to me. Snooze that blue flame finish, wow just amazing. Not to mention you look so comfortable behind that kit. I'm surprised I had never heard of you before. You're very fluid your style is graceful and yetI sent you can lay down a really powerful groove if need be. Well done. 🥁
This finish is sick!!
You are an inspiration :)
Catalina drums are very underated...beautiful looking kit..😊
Excellent drumming.
I bought some and modded them. Changed the bearing edge to the vintage round over , added diecast hoops , painted the inside with silver fence paint . (The paint was more for fun then sound) They sound incredible .
Would love to hear more in detail about your mod. Thanks.
Send pics or video!
Awesome little kit
We agree 💯
Great video of the range of sound this kit can produce. Wish other video's would do this.
Thanks Ronald
I just bought this same set and I cant wait to play
🙏
Very cool ride cymbal. 👍
Great player! Great sound!
💯
I can't wait to get mine yellow satin flame in the mail
I tested these drums and while I still prefer my Broadkasters a lot more, you can't go wrong with these Catalinas. Especially with their price tag.
super drumming!
awesome to see this god doing some demos!
It doesn’t make a hoot of difference to me as I have this kit and it’s amazing but I am curious. Are these actual mahogany or Philippine mahogany/luan?
Ordered mine yesterday and I can't wait to receive it! The Blue Satin Flame finish looks superb. The tuning ranges demonstrated in this video by Nate sound fantastic. Really looking forward to playing a bop sized kit and seeing how it compares to my Mapex Black Panther Blaster kit. Sure looks a lot of fun.
How's the kit?
@@artcorvolet Hi, I actually haven't received the kit yet. I live in the UK and the kit was due to arrive last month however they got delayed. I'm expected to have mine delivered mid October.
@@georgebrown4315 update?
fantastic
Great drummer & very nice kit , l checked one out at guitar center and found them really nice to play.
RULLANTE STUPENDO......, accordatura da grandissimi intenditori e professionisti........ 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
I have always wanted to own and play a Gretsch set but food and shelter always seem to win. I love the sound and look of these and might have to get a 4th job so I can have the Gretsch experience. Great sound and great playing on this review. Best wishes.
yeah Nate!!! also, probably the first time I hear his voice
nice set and nice playing
😃
600 Euro for these drums ain’t no crime. I bought it 3 years ago, same kit. Great for jazz. ÜBEP
Thank you
@@gretschdrumsusa 😁👍👏
Wish I'd waited another month to buy my Catalina! Would've chosen this finish instead!
Il me donne le mal de mer, à bouger la tête comme ça ! 😱
Damn yeah. This finish or the Crimson.
Finally
...so musical
I remember when the first Catalina clubs came out back in the late 90s. They were just under $700. Now they've surpassed the 1K retail mark, and the only difference is a few more finishes, different suspension mount system, round gasket bass drum mount, and a round badge. Not much to justify an increase of 30%. Still, these are well made and sound great.
Rhythmista I just bought mine for 700
Well, you know, 20 years have passed since then. If you think about it, they have kept the price relatively stable. Also, I bought mine for $ 900 with a set of bags and hardware. Great kit!
Jesús Hernández that’s sweet deal, I just got the shells & skins, bought the rest from Sweetwater & GC
I just got 2 of these kits...12 ,14,18 and 12,14,16,20 . The tone is amazing and at many tuning ranges. I have had and still have some high end maple but these are very different ,the 30 deg. bearing edges on mahogany just sing. The price is right as well.
😄
I’m debating 18 vs 20 what are your views?
@@pierreg8562 Honestly I preferred the 18 I've since sold the kit with the 20 . I saved up and went with a USA custom 12,16,22 in sonic blue.
The 12 14 18 Catalina I found is excellent in Jazz but also blues and perfect in studio .They have a great tuning range. The 18 I found had more focus and punch than the 20.
Anything bigger than 18 in Catalina I would go right to Brooklyn or USA custom . All the best.
@@SalMichael thanks a lot - i might stick to the 18" then - i feared that it would like punch vs the 20" but you are saying the opposite :)
I don’t understand why some people criticise the Catalina snares...
They sound fine to me.
Roy Beckerman I have a Catalina snare that I absolutely love. I've toured with it and gotten many compliments, and recorded on it. When I work with the local studios, they ask if I'm bringing "the snare". Bought it on a steal, and it really is one of my favorite snare drum ever.
DrumJedi
The whole kit sounds good.
I’m not sure about the quality of the finish compared to other Gretsch models, because I’ve never played one.
@@roybeckerman9253 it's the same wrap as the more expensive series sport!
Hans Held
Great buying.🥁
i want one too
I like that term..."vintagey"
What cymbals were used in this video? The whole kit feels so well tied together!
Istanbul Agop.
Specifics please on rides and crash???
🙏
Looks like a 20/22 agop 30th ann. With 14 or 15 OM hihats. Guessing the right side crash is a 20 OM crash.
Since they're mahogany-ish drums, I'll get these.
I've played Rogers, Ludwig, Yamaha and currently Tama. I love these sizes as a jazz and practice kit. The mahogany shells sound great when wide open. Time to get a set of Gretsch Catalina Club ! Is the 14" snare an 8 or 10 lug model ?
8. www.gretschdrums.com/drums/catalina-club
No idea how they got that crappy snare to sound that good. The rest of the kit is amazing and so fun to play. I love it and yes I know most of us have 2-4 other snares we use anyway.
Wow
Blue Satin Flame = SEXY!
Is this the scratchy kind of WRAP or does it have the smooth feel to it. The old finishes like this scratched pretty easy.Hope it's the improved,if so I'm definitely picking up a kit with this finish.wanted it when I was young and couldn't afford it. Please respond gretsch.!!!
Hi,
It has that scratchy feel to the touch. Wraps are much better made today than years past. :-)
Fantastic player. Would love to know what cymbals he’s playing. They sound awesome.
He plays Istanbul Agop cymbals.
The hi hats are from the OM series, I think they're 15". The left and right ride cymbals are 30th anniversary, and the far right crash/ride looks to be an Agop Signature.
Love the cymbal sound. What’s the ride & cymbal kind up? Drums sound & look great! Cool hearing the tuning range. Nate Wood always sounds great 👌🏽🥁🎶
tdrum21 his 2 main rides up top are Istanbul Agop 30th anniversary. Possibly 20 and 22. But I think he also owns a24 and 26
I own 15" hats, 19, 20, 22, 24, 26
They ain't cheap but they are timeless.
Worth the investment
His hi hats are Cindy Blackman model, and on the far right is Agop signature.
I think the main is a 24" 30th Anniversary and the LSR is a 20". The far right is an Agop Sig ride, looks like a 24 as well.
Did you put new heads on or is it the heads that were delivered with the kit?
The heads it came with.
Does this wrap have a texture to it or is it smooth. It’s hard to tell.
Nice playing ,good recording...how many mics ?
Sounds like my Gretsch USA custom with 80% off the price.
Wow!
A lot of the Gretsch models have that basic same or similar flavor. When you get the cheaper Catalina model, you’re still getting that “pretty girl”. It’s just that she’s wearing sneakers and jeans instead of the dress and heels.
Nice drums . Which cymbals were played??? They sound great to
Istanbul Agop, 20", 24" 30th Anniversary rides, and a 24" Agop Signature ride.
Gretsch, you should really offer this color on Catalina kits with 20", 22", and 24" bass drums. :)
they do
Only a 20" add-on, not as a kit.
@@DoppelgangerShockwave 😢😢
@@artcorvolet They sell a shell pack with a 20" kick now, as well. You can find it on sweetwater and reverb from what I've seen. Just ordered one last night!
@@jsalts 😮 sweet!
Great video! Can I ask if it's a 20 or 18 inch bass drum? =)
20"
Can you get a double tom holder with this if you want to add a 10”? Also where are the bronze sparkles on the Gretsch website?
Hey there.
Yes you can get a double tom holder for an additional 10" tom. This part number is GS1-THDL. You can order this through any authorized retailer.
As for the Bronze Sparkle, this is still available.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention that it is not on the website as an available color.
This will be addressed.
Thanks for the inquiry.
This kit sounds great i would prefer the 20 inch bass drum and change out the stock heads and you would be go to go.
Johnny Merritt apparently you can get a 20!
Anyone know what that ride between the toms is?
this guy.
💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛
What cymbals are you using?
Why to buy expensive drums, if you have catalina club?
I agree. I use them for my studio. They are perfect. More expensive drums would have better build quality for touring.
Buy these and save thousands, over the expensive kits.
Better off spending the saved money, on quality cymbals.
In the end, the drummer makes the drums...not vice versa.
exactly
I agree. These drums sound just as professional as expensive kits especially when it’s mixed with music.
I think otherwise, better drums are better than cymbals, no one has ever said "thats a great cymbal solo"
@@pepe7drum
If you only have X amount of dollars to spend…spend it wisely, trying to cover all your bases..
Behind electric guitars, different drums are often hard to tell apart…depending on how good the drummer is..
Bad sounding cymbals really stand out..
is the blue finish a wrapped or a painted finish?
Hooooooooow do I tune my drums to get that high bop sound? :( I have this exact kit.
Tune the bottom heads really tight, table top tight as they say. The batter heads can either be medium or high tuning depending on how high of a pitch you want.
How did you get that low snare sound?
Tuned it down and dampened it. :-)
@@gretschdrumsusa thanks so just normall tuning
I ordered this kit from Sam ash & they got em to me quick, 3 days
YES!
Great stuff Gretsch! Is it a 20" kick of an 18" ?
www.gretschdrums.com/drums/catalina-club You can order whichever you prefer. 😎
But which one is it in this video?
@@theberlindrummer4522 They never answer direct questions, sadly.
@@djevlhelvete yes i see that, i think it was the 18", i ended up buying a Sonor AQ2 with a 20" kick, a bit more expensive but more versatile i believe.
Putin can play!
I was also thinkin that when seeing Nate for the first time
Hahahahahaha.... that is some funny stuff, there!
No, he is Phil Collins.
Bryan Ferrante LOL 😂
Same thing! LMAO!
What bass drum size is used in the video? 14x18 or 14x20?
Pawel Bernasiuk it’s an 18 inch kick on mine and I think that’s the only size it comes in, if you tune it fairly low and dampen it man it gives such a punchy sound it sounds like a 20”
I bought Catalina club studio SWG finish with 20” bass drum and extremely happy with the kit both for the quality and sound just placed an order with Thomann.de for the 10”tom to complete the kit with the GS1 THDL Double Tom Holder .The Remo stockheads are
fine .
is that an 18 or 20 kick?

14x18
is this the 18" kick?
Does it exist in 5-piece set (one more tom) ?
