  • This is the first part of a six-location adventure where we track down Tunisia's hidden Star Wars (and Indiana Jones) filming sites in the south of the country, around Nefta and Tozeur. Some of them are easy to access, like this one, others involve driving through the desert and potentially getting stuck in the dunes...hence the shovel! We begin our adventure at Maguer Gorge (Sidi Bouhlel), on the western edge of Dghoumès National Park in the Tozeur Governorate of southwestern Tunisia. This site was used by George Lucas to film Star Wars: A New Hope (Episode IV) in 1976 and Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (Episode I) in 1997. Steven Spielberg then returned to this area to film scenes from Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981.
Nicknamed "Star Wars Canyon", Maguer Gorge was the setting for two Episode IV locations on Tatooine: (1) Jundland Wastes and (2) a desert wasteland bluff overlooking Mos Eisley. Lucas and his team returned to the Maguer Gorge in July 1997 for Episode I to shoot the Boonta Eve Classic sniper sequences as part of the podrace circuit on Tatooine. In 1981 Steven Spielberg headed to the area and filmed footage of the Ark of the Covenant procession route for Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). Just southeast of the gorge, Spielberg also filmed a desert area as the Tanis (Egypt) dig site. We visit all of these sites as part of our video tour!

I would recommend the hike down the canyon. You can see the exact point where R2D2 was kidnapped by the jawas and the place where Indiana Jones faces the Nazis with a bazooka.
The hike is very easy and the best of the region.
Thanks for having written this gide. It is very informative.

I went and stood on the point where Indiana Jones threatens to blow up the Ark of the Covenant. However, I didn't go down onto the canyon floor. Certainly looks like a beautiful spot for a hike, a little like Selja Gorge over in Gafsa Governorate. Glad you are enjoying the guidebook! Pretty cool that you got to actually go to these places! You can just hear the whir of the podracers zooming by as you gaze into that canyon!

Yes, this was a really enjoyable part of the writing process. If you fancy following in my footsteps, you can either do it independently with a copy of my Bradt Guide to Tunisia (which has all the GPS points in it) or you can book a tour with Galaxy Tours. Links below!

Fantastic start to the Star Wars tourism film site reviews in the Tozeur/Nefta area by Scafidi Travels, a Galaxy Tours collaborative partner. Maguer Gorge (Sidi Bouhlel) offers one of the most immersive Star Wars fandom experiences in Tunisia. Enthusiasts can easily spend an entire day mapping out the various Episode IV and Episode I scene locations filmed inside, above, and at the mouth of the gorge.
The nearby date palm orchard in Bouhlel Sdada, used for Indiana Jones filming in 1980, retains the look and feel of an archaeological dig site. Galaxy Tours marked the spot of Indy's shovel over the well of the souls (timestamp 8:46) on 16 February 2020.
