I played today in a 40 mph wind, and when this video came up, I had to watch it. The biggest effect the wind has ever had on a shot of mine, though, was years ago. I hit a 7 iron into a very, very high wind on a 110 yard hole, thinking it would be enough, but it was not even close. I hit it well, but high, with a lot of backspin. The ball flew perhaps half way to the green, curving up and up until it complete turned over, coming directly back at me. It landed a few feet in front of me, and rolled to a few feet behind. So, on that shot, the net effect of the wind was -101%. LOL. I wish I had that one on video.
Great story. Thanks for sharing Carl. The wind can definitely do bonkers things to a golf ball. And it’s not as if a lot of my shots need any help to go the wrong way most of the time!
Hello, I found your article very interesting, and I would like to ask you a question. - I am a 67 years old player, normal with 20 handicap and with a limited swing speed, (old age, accident, arthritis finally all the panoply of the old) so the question is: - If instead of Titleist Pro V1, I used harder balls, would it have a beneficial effect in wind, cold or humidity?
Many thanks for the feedback Marc and delighted you found the video helpful. Ball wise to be honest I think you’re better trying softer than a ProV1. And the reason for this is your swingspeed rather than the weather. Harder balls for slower swingspeeds can exaggerate your shot pattern - ie if you slice you will slice more and if you draw normally you could hook more - and this is due to the limited time the harder ball spends on the club face. Softer balls by comparison interact with the club face longer which tends to be better for slower swingspeeds. Worth trying a couple of softer balls to compare I would say but unfortunately weather wise, especially in wind which is the real killer, I don’t think it will make that much difference with a slower swingspeed.
Just quick one, my driver going nowhere atm in the cold, slight bit of wind, ground very boggy. ( it’s pot luck I’m finding the balls tbh ) lol it’s going round 210 atm how much yards do you reckon I might be losing then?
Very difficult to say but you’ve definitely picked some of the toughest conditions for long hitting - cold + wind + no run on wet ground. Good rough rule of thumb for your potential distance is 2.5 to 2.7 times your driver swing speed. Taking weather out of it that should give you a fair idea.
😂 hopefully that’s not that bad! Can get it up to 172/173 but wouldn’t say was the ‘comfort’ zone. My Mizuno MP-32s are well over 10 years old now so suspect the loft is closer to a modern 5 now although see that Bryson was using 25 degree 7-iron recently which just seems bonkers.

Learning so much elements affecting golf’s distance, thank you!!😊
Delighted you found the video useful!
Great stuff. Very interesting.
Glad you enjoyed it!

@@GolfingFocus Merci beaucoup pour votre réponse - Thank you very much for your answer
@@marccouasnon6973 no problem at all! 👍
I’m amazed at how good new balls with aerodynamic characteristics fly in the wind!
The modern golf ball is amazing for sure. Been the biggest technology advance in the last couple of decades without question!

I've been watching this twice a month
That’s awesome and really pleased you’re finding continued value from the video. 👍
All the stock yardage equals carry yardage right?
All Trackman yardages are carry yup as far as in aware. Arccos yardages are total though.
Some time a one to two club difference
Or more if you're playing by the sea in Scotland I've found alot of times in the past 😂
@@GolfingFocus what type of golfball do you play in colder weather?
@@rockystelone21 I stick to a Pro V1 in all conditions to be honest.
@@GolfingFocus I appreciate the advice!!
165 yard average 4iron? wtf Good info in the video tho
That's not unusual for a senior golfer.

Thanks Zahimi. In a good few years off senior golf yet but maybe I need to think again by the sounds of things 😂
Just stick to being honest, plenty of morons in the comments section that must play on the moon the distances they claim to hit!
