And could be done in 2 minutes. Most of that is just an unnecessary process for someone to sell you. Only 2 points he made are actually needed: 1. learn to figure out your start line (not apex) 2. Commit. Otherwise it's just the same "feel" for the speed and break that is necessarily a part of any putting, just w extra time-consuming steps instead of being done in your head automatically. You're still guessing on uphill/downhill/speed, which is interdependent with start line. And still guessing on adjustments for the fact the slope is not likely consistent the whole way (on longer putts). I think it's just mental. That is, of course, still worth something, but if ppl just worked on those 2 crucial points and learned to trust them, I think they would see at least as much benefit w/o the superfluous process.

Love it. This is pretty much what I was taught for this. Even with the in-betweeners, your graphics were what I was taught. I like to use the triple track balls so I can aim them at my spot and see if the ball is rolling end over end. It's not a perfect system, but it is a very systematic way to read break. Great for routine and gets you focused solely on speed since your start line is already picked.
I took an aim point class and I love it. I bought a digital scale and practiced for days. I use it on every putt. I've learned my slope angles accurately, and don't need to use my fingers on anything inside 10 feet. Longer putts I use my fingers and it is unbelievably accurate. I feel extremely confident putting. I almost always miss on the high side and my lags are perfect. I find it really assuring on those 1% or 0% slopes, feeling good knowing if it's actually a "straight putt" or if there is a break. That all being said, I still take into account natural breaks or slopes ("away from mountains" or "towards water") direction of the grain, and wind. I will always walk around the hole to be sure. But aim point puts it all together perfectly.
This is without a doubt the easiest and best explanation of how to use aimpoint I've ever seen. Definitely will give it some practice to see if I like it playa
Matty Boom boom, I just took an Aimpoint express lesson from a Level 3 instructor who just returned from the yearly update by Mark Sweeney himself. There are some minor adjustments to your method: 1. within 9 feet: use your pinky (or pinky + ring for 2% etc.) but Always place the inner border of your finger aligning with the center of the hole 2. within 9 feet: measure and turn your body 30° upwards the slope to feel better 3. outside 9 feet: always do 2 measurements and go with the bigger measurement
This is such a clear explanation! Thankyou. It's still a faff for this 60yr old 10 handicapper. I'll stick to plumb bobbing. (Hey, learnt golf in the 1970's - the aim point of it's day!). But if I was starting out now I'd put this in play without a doubt.
Great lesson! You produce my favourite golf lessons content by far! I have just had a formal Aimpoint lesson. This is a very very good representation of what I learned. The only difference being that I was taught that anything outside 6ft is measured at a third and two thirds then choosing the highest number (not >20ft). I have found the Aimpoint system to be mind blowing and extremely effective. I also thought it was mostly B.S. and even as being taught it felt that mathematically this doesn’t necessarily make sense… but it really does work. Would be worth adding that to measure a double break you take a single read at one step farther than half way and use that (really works which is mental). Another worthy point of note is to be conscious to measure the line again if on a point of your chosen putting line there is extreme break ie take your normal read and let’s say it’s 3%, look at the Aimpoint line of three fingers, if that now travels over a knuckle etc of extreme break, take an additional aim off that Aimpoint line as if it’s your only read such as 5% (5 fingers) and this will now be the correct line. One great stat I was told is that a miss high is multiplied by 0.5, a miss low is multiplied by 3 so a 6 inch miss high is 3 inches off, a 6 inch miss low is 18 inches… further reason to aim high, and the reason that when reading at a third and two thirds of >6ft putts, you always use the highest number for the read. Thank you for the great content.
I keep seeing everyone talk about aimpoint but nobody fucken shows how to do it! Turns out Ive just been eyeballing aimpoint but without the fingers or feeling with legs, just mentally crunching it. Thankyou Golf Sidekick!

Another great video, Matty boom boom! I have taken an AimPoint lesson in South Florida and you would make an excellent instructor (you could make a lot of money doing that). My instructor had me do things slightly different. First of all he had me turn my hand over and stick my fingers out with the finger tips and palm up (doesn’t look like the pros!). Secondly if you feel a half of a percent, the he wanted me to cross my fingers rather than the thumb or little finger like you showed. Thirdly, we found out that one of my knees doesn’t match the other so instead of straddling the line he has me stand on the line with my heels pointing where I think the lower part of the line is. I stand there for a few seconds and get my feeling for the percent based on the pressure in my heels (it does work, but not good if you are playing with someone and they have almost the same putt and they don’t want you to stand in their line!). You kindly reminded me of something I forgot about putting the fingers at the flag pole for putts 6 feet and under and to start the fingers at the edge of the hole (covering the hole), so thanks for refreshing me on that. My local greens are fast so I am constantly having the fingers closer to my face than an outstretch arm. But this system does work! My playing partners look at me like I’m nuts (which I can be, gotta have fun!), but when I make those putts I always yell “AimPoint baby!l. I do find over time and playing mostly the same course, I can visually know if the slope is a 1 or 2, so sometimes, I don’t even stand to feel the slope. Once in I while I get it wrong. The main thing is if you can get your pace right, even if you miss the putt by not much, the result is a gimme or a very easy knock in. AimPoint rocks and so do you! 😊❤😊
Hands up if you bought a digital level straight after watching this. 🙋 Thanks for the explanation, Matt. 10 mins of being thoroughly informed. Fantastic stuff!
@@MrJakeblu Just make sure that if you use a case on your phone that the phone lays flat. The downside of the phone is that it's covering a small area, while the level he's using looks to be about 18" long.
I've been using Aimpoint for 4 years, and it works great. Our club's greens are fast, so it's standard to use a bent arm when holding your fingers out. Although I was taught not to, I fine it useful to check the slope closer to the hole as well, because it can turn quite a bit at the end if there is more break there when the ball is moving at its slowest.
Excellent explanation of the Aim Point Express system. And as someone commented, an explanation that is not an ad. Using APE for a couple of years allowed me to almost take 3 putts out of my game ( 1 to 2 per season).
First time I’ve ever seen someone actually explain aim point quickly and easily. Thank You!! I’d does seem very easy once you dial in your own personal measurements so to speak. Going to have to give it a go. Otherwise I’m pretty much just guessing on the putting greens 😂
Thank you. Been watching other videos and didnt grasp it until now. You are also the first one that said line your fingers up with the INSIDE OPPOSITE EDGE OF THE CUP.
Only inside 6ft. Fingers don’t work for lots of people though so instead it’s done as inches ie 0% = dead straight 1% = 1 inch off centre (normally leaves small daylight to very edge of cup 2cm maybe), 2% = 1 inch off side of cup, 3% = 3 inches off side of cup
I did some experiments inside 6 feet on 9-10 stimp. 4 feet 1% - aim inside the edge of the cup (let’s call this spot ‘1% line) 2% - aim half a cup outside the 1% line 3% - aim 1 cup outside the 1% line 5 feet 1% start in the edge of the cup 2% and 3% is half cup and 1 cup outside of that 6 feet 1% start line is just outside the edge 2% and 3% same as above, half cup and one cup outside the 1% line
Great explanation. After watching this I ordered a level and tried it out today on the practice green. I was amazed at how well it worked and calibrating myself went a lot quicker than I thought it would. Looking forward to trying it some more and then trying it on the course.
I took an aimpoint class years ago. One other thing the instructor said was that the pace for the ball should be about what you think will just die it into the hole, rather than the technique of "hit it so it would roll past 17 inches" (Dave Pelz putting bible recommendation). Another tip I realized from that class - this now makes every putt seem like a straight putt. Find the aimpoint line and putt as if it was straight. Gravity and the slope will steer the ball. For me this had the effect of preventing me from trying to "steer" my putts.
Thanks for explaining something I didn't understand. I'm always misreading putts but tonight I used aimpoint to sink a birdie putt to tie our opponents. I look forward to working to making my reads better.
Watched your video 2 weeks ago. Been putting lights out since. I'm still learning and trying to figure out 1, 2, 3, etc., but with just what I'm deployed, I'm already 100% better putter than I was before trying to find the apex.
I used to use I can’t read greens as an excuse for poor putting. Since watching this video and Matt’s mental game video’s I’ve decided to nor use my poor depth perception as an excuse. I’ve fully embraced AimPoint and am rapidly improving my green reading. I still have a way to go, but I’m showing great progress. No more excuses!
Really interesting and something I’m going to give a good go after my last big game this season. I’d say apex putting is misunderstood as well. As a visual putter I move to the apex to see the drop off but analyse it as I move back to the ball and you are right. Typically, depending on the pace of the green, you need to move your line around the apex to take into account the pace of the ball and the break it will take. What you have shown is something that is no slower than going to the other side of the flag and I think I can efficiently use that as a starting point in my process. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for this video. The best explanation of this way of reading putts on UA-cam. I hope to see more of this type of instructional content. You are also staying true to your mantra of short game and putting saves scores.
I’ve been getting better using your advice and I appreciate it a lot. I get birdies maybe once every two rounds and have had the goal of getting two birdies in one round and on my last round I missed a 3 foot putt for the second bird of the day, and it totally messed with my head and it was hard to get back in the zone after that, but I learned that I am the man and a good playa. To keep progressing and keep my confidence up.
Totally bought a digital level immediately after watching this video. I use my feet currently as my eyes have started playing tricks on me. This is exactly what this video should be. Straight to the point “heres how you do it, now go and do it”
I took an imprint lesson about 6 months ago and it’s almost completely removed 3 putts from my game, even from long range. I made a series of boards in the garage at home to match up to the 1,2 and 3% slopes so I can practice there.
Thanks for clarifying the part with the fingers for the long putts. I started teaching myself Aimpoint last summer (Kiwi here) with a $2 disc bubble level off Amazon. I've ben using the centre of the hole for all reading. Never thought about placing the fingers on the low side of the hole for longer putts. I just played a half finger less!!! Now I might be more accurate on longer putts!! 😂
I've been using aimpoint for most of last year and all of this year, and now I rarely 3 putt. I't's not perfect, but as long as you get the pace right, it's really realiable. If anything, it at least gives me confidence in my putt.
Firstly, this was an excellent video describing how to use Aim Point. That said, no amateur golfers should ever use it unless they are phenomenal putters (so very, very few). Even if you were perfectly calibrated, amateurs seldom hit the perfect line with good speed. I'd also like to point out that saying people underread putts normally doesn't indicate Aim Point is necessarily better. It just indicates they aren't good at reading greens to begin with.
Matty great word on the apex. The problem with the apex is it's another waypoint on the way to the hole. What is the waypoint we need to hit to reach the apex? Then what is the waypoint we need to hit to hit the waypoint to hit the apex? We can imagine an infinite number of waypoints back to the ball which is too much. We end up just guessing again and aiming somewhere outside it. Much better to pick a line as you say. I will be working and tweaking this system myself this season in Aus.
Aim Point also teaches the correct speed is 14-16’’ PAST THE HOLE…. 1: ready the green with your feet, 2: find your aim point with your fingers and a bent arm based on the current speed of the greens, 3: stroke the putt on line 14-16” past the hole for speed. 4: walk up and remove your ball from the hole, 5: mark down another birdie. It’s simple. It works. Every time.
I’m a huge Aimpoint nerd, been doing it for 2 years now. It works. Keeps you under 36 putts every round. Haters like to say it takes too long when they have no idea how to read a putt and 3 putt everything. It takes 3 seconds if you do it right. FU haters! Aimpoint is the future!! The BAUS endorsement is all the proof you need.
Broski exactly. A good first putt followed by a tapinski, means you are cleaned up in no time. Meanwhile the Pace of Play Bro is angrily 4 stabbing for 3 minutes
Ya, it works ... kinda like a flight w 5 layovers will still get you to your destination... but they also had a direct flight. It's just that layovers became trendy and offer more opportunity to make more money selling the new trend.
Good stuff. Only slight change I would suggest is sensing slope doesn't have to be just with the feet, it can be with knees and hips. For example, my differentiator between 2 and 3 is having to bump my hip.
Great explanation (I have always been curious). Having seen what it entails, I think I will stick to golf. Like Dave Peltz said about plumb-bobbing with the putter, no-one could give him a good description of how it works - because it doesn't.
I've practiced Aim Point for a decade and the only other thing I'd add is you need to concentrate on a speed that gets the ball about a foot past the hole
How do you pump out videos like this so quickly? You should do video on making a UA-cam video and the steps you follow with your team. If you are doing this all yourself and pumping these out that quickly that is incredible
Love this content. I just spent 2 hours on a green and for the life of me I couldn't feel the difference between 0-1-2%. 2.5% is the first slope I could actually feel (verified by a digital level)
Dude played 9 , 15 putts. Thanks. I work in landscaping i set grade so i can already feel slope with me feet. The aiming so awesome. I didn't even go to the practice green and test it out first. I went straight to the course and started doing it
I even had a three-put but it was speed related. I went for it on a long birdie putt. But a three putt from putting long is a lot better than a three-put from coming short
Ive been aimpointing for a few months ....its money ! Much less practice than youd think for it to start paying dividends 100 pct has saved me strokes.. IMMEDIATELY especially in low light conditions, tough to read greens, shaddows on the green... typical of when and where i play Anytime you cant get a good read with your eyes , it gives you another way... A great way
It’s especially awesome when you have a long Hugh breaking putt. Aim Point will make it seem the putt is way out side the hole, but it will break towards the hole instead of away from the hole if your on the low side.
How long did it take you to get comfortable using in on the course? I ve been using conventional green reading for 16+ years but been always trugling with putting, mainly longer putts, so I know I need a change and been thinking about using aim point for a few months now, seems like a good time to start with it especialy when I now know how to use it. Thank you playa!
Very nice explanation. When this 1st came out I had a playing competitor do a "war dance" around the hole trying to find the slope, meanwhile trampling on all 3 others players lines or through lines. We were NOT pleased

4 feet
1% - aim inside the edge of the cup (let’s call this spot ‘1% line)
2% - aim half a cup outside the 1% line
3% - aim 1 cup outside the 1% line
5 feet
1% start in the edge of the cup
2% and 3% is half cup and 1 cup outside of that
6 feet
1% start line is just outside the edge
2% and 3% same as above, half cup and one cup outside the 1% line
Thanks for this video. I’ve started using this as well and I agree. Once you commit to the read it takes doubt out of your mind.
Glad I got to watch this before the aim point police slap you with copyright infringement! Thanks Matty!
thanks for these reminder!
Brilliant stuff mate. This has given me so much more confidentiality on long putts!
Thank you! Awesome explanation! Never understood what they were doing.
Great job in explaining that putting technique. I always wondered what the pros were doing when using their fingers to align their putts.
I've been waiting for this video from your for years! Thank you for the lesson!
Thank you for doing a video on aim point that makes it easy to understand.
2nd day using aim point and I rolled in 4 birdies and shot even (71) today, this stuff works!
BEST aim point lesson on youtube!
Love the technical descriptions and explanations. Very helpful!
Thanks for this video. The best explanation of this way of reading putts on UA-cam. I hope to see more of this type of instructional content. You are also staying true to your mantra of short game and putting saves scores.
One of the best aim putt videos on UA-cam ❤
Super video, thanks... now I just got to get my head around the golf fashion you guys have there, WoW !
I started using aimpoint about a year ago. And my putting has become so much better. If you haven't tried it, you really need to give it a chance.
Thank you mate! Your explanation brought my putting to another level.🎉
Nice. The best advice is to reduce doubles and bogeys before aiming for more birdies
Hello Dr. Matt. This was a very interesting lecture from our Waddaplayer teacher. Amazing how this system works in practice. 😊😊😊
Best complete Aimpoint logic and demo. Thank you!
Thank you for such a good lesson. I am going to try and put this into practice today. Thanks again.
Totally bought a digital level immediately after watching this video. I use my feet currently as my eyes have started playing tricks on me. This is exactly what this video should be. Straight to the point “heres how you do it, now go and do it”
This is the best explanation I’ve ever seen
New video added to my Playlist to rewatch before next putting practice
You're an absolute Baus Matt, what a video and explanation. Top man 💪👍
Love this! At last, simply explained.
I took an imprint lesson about 6 months ago and it’s almost completely removed 3 putts from my game, even from long range.
I made a series of boards in the garage at home to match up to the 1,2 and 3% slopes so I can practice there.
Yeah I think that first 30 minutes just feeling numbers and measuring what you feel is absolute gold ...I wouldn't try and hit putts too soon :)
Great vid on Aimpoint.
Matt can you tell us more about the level you were using and if you got it from eBay or Amazon possibly a link
Thanks mate ...
I have one of those disc things. I’ll compare readings. Haven’t used the disk yet since i bought it off alibaba thought it was junk lol
Yeah look, that made absolutely no sense whatsoever
Best explanation of AimPoint I’ve seen/.heard
Matty great word on the apex. The problem with the apex is it's another waypoint on the way to the hole. What is the waypoint we need to hit to reach the apex? Then what is the waypoint we need to hit to hit the waypoint to hit the apex? We can imagine an infinite number of waypoints back to the ball which is too much. We end up just guessing again and aiming somewhere outside it. Much better to pick a line as you say. I will be working and tweaking this system myself this season in Aus.
exactly, removing millions of variables down to one is excellent
@@GP-qz6kk analogies are not arguments
Never seen it explained so well before. Thanks.
Correct
This was solid gold hits from start to finish!
Delivered as you promised me...with results breaking 70 before. Less Voo-doo with arm length than I thought with using
Finally a proper easy to understand Aimpoint explanation, and it's even a training course at the same time. Thank You!
Great job describing! Best I’ve seen.
I've practiced Aim Point for a decade and the only other thing I'd add is you need to concentrate on a speed that gets the ball about a foot past the hole
Great job clarifying the concept
How do you pump out videos like this so quickly? You should do video on making a UA-cam video and the steps you follow with your team. If you are doing this all yourself and pumping these out that quickly that is incredible
Great lesson buddy I will try that .Thanks for the tip
Playas, our Baus has just saved us huge as money here. 👏👏👏👍🏼
This makes so much sense. No idea why I thought everyone is just doing it by feel.
I did too. Then i read up. Quite unbelievably easy actually
Another Tool to the Belt for Golf Sidekick! 🎯🎯
Great explanation. I just believe my eyes over my feet.
Love this content. I just spent 2 hours on a green and for the life of me I couldn't feel the difference between 0-1-2%. 2.5% is the first slope I could actually feel (verified by a digital level)
0-1-2 are the hardest
3,4,5 are easiest
they recommend practicing 0-1-2 the most
I can see the slope now instead of feeling 0-1-2
I'll keep going out and hoping I can start to feel it. Today was just standing on a green wishing for something to happen 😂
Thanks Matt. Have level and will work for birdies.
That was such a great lesson. Thank you very much!! 🤩
LEGEND OF THE GAME
Ive been aimpointing for a few months ....its money ! Much less practice than youd think for it to start paying dividends
100 pct has saved me strokes.. IMMEDIATELY
especially in low light conditions, tough to read greens, shaddows on the green... typical of when and where i play
Anytime you cant get a good read with your eyes , it gives you another way... A great way
Very interesting and an excellent guide to move your putting to the next level. Thanks. Where do you play on Thailand I am from Hua Hin. Regards Jens
Gangbanger, I absolutely love you videos and have learned a tremendous amount with you. TY!
Epic video. Any chance you can explain double breakers?
GREAT VIDEO!
CORRECT PLAYA
Thanks for the great explanation, but I'm afraid for us average duffers, doing this will add another half hour to the round
This is very good content man. Thank you
Best explanation ever, thank you.
Good job appreciate the video now I know how to do it and after I watched it I don’t feel like doing it no more lol😂😂
Simply brilliant explanation, thanks 👍
Thanks legend
It’s especially awesome when you have a long Hugh breaking putt. Aim Point will make it seem the putt is way out side the hole, but it will break towards the hole instead of away from the hole if your on the low side.
Aimpoint is awesome. It’s not perfect, but this method gets you to slow down and focus on the putt.
Indeed, people are gonna be people.
It's why I don't associate with many of them
