That line has replayed in my head over and over since I watched the movie. I love the way this movie shows how powerful words can be. Negatively and positively too.
Agreed. Derek didn't deserve to have his father taken away from him. My heart breaks that he had to go through that at such a young age But what he did is not the answer. Doris should have tried to move her family to a safer neighborhood, hell maybe even a different STATE, and Derek should have just focused on the well-being of his family and himself and forgotten everything else, not held on so tightly to his anger and bitterness. Because the cruel harsh truth is, the outside world doesn't care how much you suffer. Life goes on. People keep living their own lives and dealing with their own crap.

No mothers ever wants to say something so harsh to her child. Yet, she feels powerless to influence him positively anymore.
Feels like another lifetime when I saw this in my early 20s on tv. That curb stomp never left my image. Never saw anything like that before in all my years of watching action movies growing up. These movies now are so rare nowadays that it is a work of art
Shoutout to your Patreons. They always select great movies for you guys. It's one of the main reasons i keep coming back to watch your reactions (which are great as well).
Haven’t seen this is a couple years but it’s scary how much this movie encapsulates America today. Right down the the shooting in the school at the end, the violence in school at the beginning. The conversation that he has with his dad at the dinner table is happening in many homes around the country. The anger…. This is film making at its best, and it’s scary…
The thing with Derek's father is, he wasn't the stereotypical racist that we're taught to shun and fear. He wasn't covered in tattoos, he didn't have a shaved head, he wasn't throwing around racial epithets, he was working with minorities in his job, and as we found out, died trying to save the lives of total strangers with a different skin color. Outwardly, he seemed like a completely normal, middle aged white guy. The prejudices were all buried beneath the surface and only shared with those he trusted, and even then he stops short of preaching outright hatred and racism. The blatant racists are a problem, to be sure, but the millions of people like Derek's father are the _real_ problem, and the real reason we still have so many barriers to true equality in the Western world.
This is an incredibly thoughtful take away from the film, I believe you're completely correct. Those type of racist like Derek's father are what will continue to keep hate alive and well for generations to come. People don't understand that racist are rarely caricatures, they are mostly quite normal looking only dropping the mask to people in moments never trying to be "hateful" they think they're just "telling it how it is".
Huh? Derek's father, the one who was murdered by Black people while putting out a house fire in a Black neighborhood, is the REAL problem that's a barrier to true equality? That makes no sense. The greater barrier to equality are racists like Little Henry, who racially bullied and kicked a White kid, racially bullied and threatened to kill Danny simply for walking out of the bathroom and the Black racists that robbed a sleeping family in the middle of the night at gunpoint because they were sore losers that lost a basketball game. The other barrier to true equality are all the people that excuse Black racists CURRENTLY committing racial violence, while simultaneously condemning White people today for the actions of people from 300 years ago that they didn't know or have any relation to. Until people stop being afraid to condemn Black racism, there can never be true equality.
He's the real problem? You literally just admitted he got murdered trying to the save the lives of total strangers with a different skin color. Yeah, sounds like a real problem....not.
As well as blacks typically offing twice as many Whites, as Whites do blacks each year, even though Whites are 4x their population size. It's not just them doing each other.
Originally, the creators of the film were going to end the movie on Derek shaving his head again after Danny's death, symbolizing his return to the hate. I'm glad they didn't go with that, not only because it would have been too much of a bummer ending (more than what we got), but also because, that isn't how it works in real life. People don't go through cycles of going in and out of hate movements. It's incredibly rare to hear of a case where someone went into a hate movement, got themselves out of it, and then went back in because of the same set of circumstances that put them in in the first place.
A couple of other critically acclaimed movies worth watching in this vein are 'La Haine' (1995) and 'Onskan' (2005), the first being French and translates to 'Hatred' and the second being Swedish and translates to 'Evil'. Both powerful movies.
the fact Norton didnt get an Oscar for this, its just as bullshit and shameful as Kilmer not getting one for Tombstone or Saving Private Ryan losing to that boring shit of shakespeare in love or whatever
Daniel and Samantha generally do not pick the films- their patrons propose and successfully vote on a number of older and classic films (eg Lawrence of Arabia, Clockwork Orange, original Planet of the Apes, etc.). Other reactors have mostly recent films with less substance.
@@bbwng54 The first reaction I saw them do, was Green Mile. Long before most started to pile on. That reaction for me hooked on them. I feel like they are genuine, unlike many others out there. Plus, I like their chemistry and personalities. Seem like nice folks.

i actually looked at the other choices on the poll for once. there were some bangers in that poll. also i guess mystic river is a crime/thriller, but that could fall under a few other categories. that movie is a must watch!!! tim robbins is almost as good in mystic river as he is in shawshank redemption, almost.
@@ibuprofriends The consequence was that Little Henry was a violent racist. It had nothing to do with whether anyone else had changed or not. He and his friends threw a White kid to the ground and kicked him twice and the ONLY thing that Danny did was walk out of the bathroom and witness it. Then racist Henry racially bullied him, threatened him and eventually murdered him.
There was an alternate ending shot for the film. It shows Derreck in the bathroom after he shaved his head, shirtless showing his swastika tattoo, a gun in his hand, and that same look and smile on his face when he got arrested. So glad they didn't use that ending. Derrick was too smart to go back to that life even after Danny was killed. He felt more guilty for it than blaming someone else. I think in his mind it was in a way he was paying for the sins of his past and that made him feel guilty and even responsible for Danny's death.
I'm amazed they even considered such a thing. The only bright light in this dark film is Derrick's redemption, the only message worth learning comes through Derrick's redemption. It's like they didn't get the point of their own movie.
I just saw an interview with Norton and he was goofing on himself. He said that to film the basketball scene where he dunked the ball, they had to keep lowering the hoop until he could finally do it. He also said that he worked his upper body hard, but that his legs looked like toothpicks, so they had to be careful about how they shot his lower body throughout the film
There was no way I was going to watch this entire film again, so I skipped your patreon watch along. You guys are too great to miss though, so I did watch this youtube edit (closed my eyes during the curb stomp scene - once was more than enough) so I could enjoy your reaction and excellent outro discussion.
This movie should be shown in schools and everyone needs to keep their eyes on the screen at all times. They need to see and hear and feel everything. You’re not supposed to like what you see, or like what you hear, or feel comfortable through parts of this movie; that’s the whole point.
I was just a teenager when this movie was released and it completely broke me. I could never understand why people can hate us so much simply because our skin was darker, and yet I’ve been called the N word, threatened by white people, not because I was doing anything wrong, but because of my skin color.
I love hearing your post movie thoughts, and I'm like you in that I need to watch something funny and light after a heavy one like this. This is Spinal Tap is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. ✌🏽
I've seen this movie growing up and multiple times at different ages, and it still hits hard, now in life my brother and I have a saying to this day, "Every now and then you have to humble a mother******". This movie humbles you, no matter who you are, I watch it every few years even though I've seen it a million times. I still tear up thinking about the hate in the world.
I'm in total agreement that everyone needs to watch this movie. I always enjoy your post movie discussions, especially on tougher watches like this one.
This movie is one of my all-time favorite movies. I love movies where there is a dramatic change in the main character, and this movie has the most dramatic change I've ever seen. Ed Norton was fantastic and should have won an award for this performance. I can't say enough good things about this movie.
There's an alternate ending where the last shot is Edward Norton looking in the mirror and shaves his head. I didn't think this movie could get any bleaker.

I just glanced at my phone and saw "X wife's first time watching.." and for a split second I thought to myself oh nooooooo! Then I read the entire title.
In relation to what Daniel was touching on I love this quote " easier to destroy than to create, easier to pull the trigger, than it is to play the guitar" 🤔...
The opposite is true. That's why black males are 6% of the US population and are responsible for 51% of the homicides, more than every other group combined. It takes effort and humility not to be aggressive and hateful
Have not watched this movie in a long time but remember it very well. The part I remember very clear is when he is in prison bonding with the black guy and forming a bond. It was important in my opinion because he became human again instead of having a pre determined judgment of someone because of their skin color. He learned how he was wrong in having that outlook, but great reaction. Loved your opinions and glad you watched this great movie!
One of roughest movies to get through, the only one to top this one for me would be Requiem for a dream. When I saw that one in this weekly art cinema thing I went to: normally after everyone left laughing and chatting and saying goodbye until next week. That week: deathly silence and everyone looking at the floor while exiting. I don't know you guys have seen that one?
I don't know if you've already been told this in the comments, but initially the image isn't supposed to be blue, normally it's a very nice black and white!

No matter what, at the end of the day, he loves his mom and thought he was protecting her. But, he sees maybe for the first time the stark difference in how they each see tue world.
Curb stomp. Curve stop?
Curb stomp.
Curd Plomp
@@ravenr1420 Stomp, my bad.
"He learned that nonsense, he can unlearn it..." I love that line so much, any and all of us can change,if we so choose...
Coincidentally, Avery Brooks(Sweeney) was in a great TV Show called Deep Space Nine.
Shoutout to your Patreons. They always select great movies for you guys. It's one of the main reasons i keep coming back to watch your reactions (which are great as well).
I just realise that the young brother is played by the same actor that plays John Conner in Terminator 2. Always wondered what he did after T2. Kudos.
He wasn't in alot of roles after T2 because he got into drugs
What
Haven’t seen this is a couple years but it’s scary how much this movie encapsulates America today. Right down the the shooting in the school at the end, the violence in school at the beginning. The conversation that he has with his dad at the dinner table is happening in many homes around the country. The anger…. This is film making at its best, and it’s scary…
So why they are feeling threathend like that with no simple anwser ? The West in general
“Just have underqualified people watch your back, racist.” Affirmative action is a fool’s errand.
His father is the true example of the banality of evil. Alan Matthews would smack the spit out of his mouth.
I wish the movie got into more actual statistics to explain Derricks hate, like the fact that black people do the majority of murders in america.
Yeah, 13% of the population but commit around 50% of the murders. It treats the audience like infants went it just pins everything on "hate".
As well as blacks typically offing twice as many Whites, as Whites do blacks each year, even though Whites are 4x their population size. It's not just them doing each other.
This movie is more important than ever today...
If the next Edward Norton movie you watch is "Death to Smoochy," you can see his incredible range as an actor with this movie fresh to compare to.
That movie gets too much hate and not enough love! Ed Norton, Robin Williams, Jon Stewart… I mean, c’mon!
Watched this the other day! Such an intense, amazing movie.
I saw Falling Down on the list you def gotta watch that soon. Very underrated and one of my favorite films
A couple of other critically acclaimed movies worth watching in this vein are 'La Haine' (1995) and 'Onskan' (2005), the first being French and translates to 'Hatred' and the second being Swedish and translates to 'Evil'. Both powerful movies.
Bota sua boca na guia do filo Derrick não é isso agora fale boa noite. 11:35
the fact Norton didnt get an Oscar for this, its just as bullshit and shameful as Kilmer not getting one for Tombstone or Saving Private Ryan losing to that boring shit of shakespeare in love or whatever
You two are amazing reactors, who pick fantastic films. I can still remember the 1st time I saw this movie. Powerful stuff.
This film is one that really stays with you. Very heavy and very necessary
The acting is incredible and it's crazy how relevant it still is
Great reaction 😊
Finally, I've been waiting all day for this. Got my bong and joint ready to go. Can't wait to see what y'all think.
I'm intrigued... do you put the joint into the bong?
@@waynecanning4122 🤣
@Wayne Canning 😂😂😂 nah, I smoke out of my bong and then I smoke the joint lol. I like the way your mind works though 😁
Same here just took a hit off my bowl 🤣
Feels bro ✌🏻✌🏻
Another great movie about change is "Blood in, Blood out: Bound by Honor" (1993).
i actually looked at the other choices on the poll for once. there were some bangers in that poll. also i guess mystic river is a crime/thriller, but that could fall under a few other categories. that movie is a must watch!!! tim robbins is almost as good in mystic river as he is in shawshank redemption, almost.
an amazing but complex movie, glad to see you guys watch it
I agree, this is a must watch for everyone. it just makes me really sad how relevant it still is 25 years later 😔
This is Norton's best role, so raw. And the last good sighting of Edward Furlong.
Torn between Norton´s role here and his role in Birdman, where he plays himself from the point of view of his co-workers/directors.
Yep. Everyone needs to see this.
The racism and hatred is so sad .I loved Derek's redemption but why did it have to end so bad his brother had changed but was killed
Despite the change of his ways, the seeds Derek sowed in his youth bore rotten fruit.
sometimes consequences don’t care whether you’ve changed or not
@@LordVolkov the film clearly states that black gangs already existed before a Derek and his would-be FBI informants rallies.
@@jongordon7914 then why Derrick didn't follow him ?
There was an alternate ending shot for the film. It shows Derreck in the bathroom after he shaved his head, shirtless showing his swastika tattoo, a gun in his hand, and that same look and smile on his face when he got arrested.
So glad they didn't use that ending. Derrick was too smart to go back to that life even after Danny was killed. He felt more guilty for it than blaming someone else. I think in his mind it was in a way he was paying for the sins of his past and that made him feel guilty and even responsible for Danny's death.
And he has two little sisters and his mother to look after. No way he'd go back. I'm a little baffled why the other ending was ever made.
I'm amazed they even considered such a thing. The only bright light in this dark film is Derrick's redemption, the only message worth learning comes through Derrick's redemption. It's like they didn't get the point of their own movie.
Another movie that has this same theme and feel is an 80's movie called Enemy Mine. Dennis Quaid and Lou Gossett Jr. Check it out!
Ed Norton is still most known for this film and Fight Club.
This movie is so heavy but so important! There’s no conversation that should not take place💁
Extremely powerful movie that everyone should see at least once. I saw it in the theater when it first came out. Some scenes will never leave my head.
The *clink* of the robbers teeth on the curb is easily one of the most disturbing foley Sfx ever 🥺😩
Is there a difference ?
It's hard to watch but an important movie
There was no way I was going to watch this entire film again, so I skipped your patreon watch along. You guys are too great to miss though, so I did watch this youtube edit (closed my eyes during the curb stomp scene - once was more than enough) so I could enjoy your reaction and excellent outro discussion.
This movie should be shown in schools and everyone needs to keep their eyes on the screen at all times. They need to see and hear and feel everything. You’re not supposed to like what you see, or like what you hear, or feel comfortable through parts of this movie; that’s the whole point.
Thank you thank you thank you!!! I appreciate all of your reactions & commitment to your craft. Shout out from NYC!!😎👍
I always love to hear what you guys have to say about everything you guys watch. Very thought through.
I was just a teenager when this movie was released and it completely broke me. I could never understand why people can hate us so much simply because our skin was darker, and yet I’ve been called the N word, threatened by white people, not because I was doing anything wrong, but because of my skin color.
Hate and prejudice is generational it's taught, the only time we are innocent is as children were we don't see colour.
im german i remember we watched that movie in high school. very educational
You should check out "The Score" with Norton, Deniro and Brando.
This reminded me of 'This is England' both a a Movie and a TV series. It's dark as hell and I suspect American History X was based on the story
Here's another pretty dark one. Apt Pupil, no spoilers.
Thanks for all you two do keeping me occupied and out of my own head.
someone check the microwave...i smell someting cooking
I love hearing your post movie thoughts, and I'm like you in that I need to watch something funny and light after a heavy one like this. This is Spinal Tap is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. ✌🏽
If you want another similar movie, Romper Stomper with Russel Crowe is really great. Also pretty heavy
This movie had Captain Ben Sisko, Kes, Dr. Bruce Banner, and John Connor.
Thank You😢😢
I'm in total agreement that everyone needs to watch this movie. I always enjoy your post movie discussions, especially on tougher watches like this one.
My teenage son told me to watch this movie. It was such an impactful movie. Ed Norton is such a wonderful actor.
I know a lot of people that need to see this! We left the theater in silence...
Ohhh mystic River is a fantastic movie!! This is amazing an very worth the win even with how hard it is to watch at times it’s hard hitting, but MR definitely should be up soon 🤞🏼
Sooo perfect how you broke this movie down to its core. Things I struggle with daily. Love yall 😞
Captain Benjamin sisko. ( star tree , deep space nine . ) best captain.. (.the sister was in Star Trek as well
Are you serious?????
@@MikeB12800 She played Kes on Star Trek Voyager.
@Mike B. yes, kes . .
Death to Smoochy should be your next Edward Norton movie to complete his transformation
was about to go to bed but then bam! this drops
The masses march into theatres like ants at a picnic to see Marvel movie trash but won't seek a movie like this out. Do better Hollywood!
Most Marvel fans are avid movie fans as well? Weird projection but you do you, I guess.
Hate just takes so much work. Love come naturally.
In high school (in France) our French/literature teacher showed us this movie in class (we were 16 yo), we were all shocked from the beginning .
Hope you two are having an great and awesome weekend ❤
I really wish this movie wasn’t still relevant today, but sadly it is. And arguably even more so.
I'm surprised Mystic River received so few votes. Outstanding movie worth the watch!
Absolutely, no one reacts to it. Directed by Clint Eastwood with Sean Penn, Tim Robbins & Kevin Bacon with a haunting end.
Mystic river is just a silly joyride. Uplifting like "Singin in the Rain."
Cool reaction as always Schmitt & Samantha, you both have a good night
