    @thebananadiaries 3 роки тому +1

    This is so helpful thank you!!! You are SUCH AN AMAZING ARTIST!! A few quick questions- did you have to transport the cake back to the fridge at any point? or did you just paint straight? Was the cake frozen? I'm trying to paint on a fondant cake tomorrow and want to make sure that the cake stays but also doesn't create any condensation (my biggest concern ha!) Thank you so much!!

    • @FiveTwoBaker
      @FiveTwoBaker  3 роки тому

      Thank you so much! As far as your question goes- it all depends on your work environment. To give you context, my environment is warm- no AC, the weather outside dictates my weather inside. Because of that I use ganache to fill and stack my cakes that require me to work on them for long periods of time. Then I cover them in fondant, and when they’re in the fridge I make sure they’re boxed. This way when I take them out to work on them, condensation can form on the box while they come to room temperature, and then I can work on them without fear of them melting or sweating.
      I wouldn’t freeze your cakes, because the sweat is caused by your super cold cake hitting a warmer environment.
      Condensation is really tough to fight, but if you’re boxing your cake, and working in a cool environment, you should be safe.
      Depending on how long you take painting you might have to fridge it for a while if you’re using buttercream, but it’s so hard to say because it depends on so many factors!
      Maybe I could answer/advise better if you let me know your environment/cake situation? If not, I hope this helps!
      Good luck! ❤️

      Oh! So sorry! This one took about 3 hrs for me to paint? As far as how long it would take you, I’m not sure. @FiveTwoBaker  2 роки тому

      Thank you so much! I've been meaning to get more painting in.... 😩 It's just been so tough to find time. But the next project I work on will definitely be here.
      As for the face, depending on how different the colors I'm trying to blend are... I'll either use a dry brush (soft) and sort of "dab, dab, dab" it. Or I might take a clean wet brush (but not soaking, just barely wet with the alcohol) and do the "dab, dab" that way. I'm basically treating it like if I'm doing someones blending of their foundation with a makeup sponge.... but its a cake and I'm using a brush.
      I hope that made sense! 💖

      Thank you! Im painting on marshmallow fondant. It sets pretty quick, so I’ve been painting on them maybe a half hour after I cover my cake, but that really depends on the environment. • @FiveTwoBaker
      @FiveTwoBaker  3 роки тому

      Thank you! Lemon extract is a substitute that I see recommended. I’ve used it once before and it works just fine, but extracts also contain alcohol! 🤷🏻‍♀️ so if you’re looking to stay away from alcohol all together I don’t have a great substitute. Just in case- I’m using alcohol bc it evaporates quickly and the amount left behind is super minimal (from what I understand). You can always use water, but it won’t evaporate as quickly. It’ll take longer to finish your piece. I hope his helps!

    This is amazing but what can I use instead of alcohol please?

    • @FiveTwoBaker
      @FiveTwoBaker  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you! I get this question a lot. Here are my recommendations on what to look for & thoughts, because I'm not exactly sure what you're needs are:
      Clear Lemon extract- like the type you would use in frosting or cakes, but it's 80% alcohol.
      Evaporex- 100% food grade alcohol.
      Baker's Spirits - Also 100% food grade alcohol.
      Finally, Water - Downside is because it will take longer to dry, you risk your fondant absorbing it, thus getting sticky, shiny fondant. It works! But you have to be more cautious with your painting.
      Basically everything is some type of alcohol, but different places sell it under different names. I hope this helps and you can work with one of these! ❤️
      If you absolutely cannot work with any kind of alcohol, then I recommend trying painting with cocoa butters. I'm not very good at it, but I do have demo videos on them, and they're not hard at all to use.

    Beautiful! I always want to paint on cakes but it sweats all the time especially in the summer. How to stop cakes from sweating? Thanks in advance!

    • @FiveTwoBaker
      @FiveTwoBaker  3 роки тому +1

      Yes! Great point! So the cake sweating is condensation. If you have it in the fridge and then pull it out into a warm environment, it will definitely always sweat! A pain, but really not much we can do about that. You might be able to calibrate your fridge specifically for cakes, but I haven't look into it too much. I suggest either: working in a cool environment to avoid the condensation; if you think your buttercream gets too soft out, try covering the cake in ganache instead before using the fondant so you don't have to keep putting it in the fridge- a small amount goes a long way; and definitely painting before you need to deliver the cake- because painting on cakes with food coloring and vodka isn't friendly to a fridge, you can't make this way ahead of time.
      I know, this was a super long response, but I hope it helps! ❤️

    • @saoirseselkie1063
      @saoirseselkie1063 3 роки тому +1

      Thank you so much for the reply! So do you mean after painting the cake I shouldn’t put it back in the fridge? If it sweats after painting it’ll affect the painting right? Thanks again!

    • @FiveTwoBaker
      @FiveTwoBaker  3 роки тому +1

      Saoirse Selkie correct. I’ve put cakes I’ve painted in the fridge and then taken them out into a hot environment (I don’t do AC in my house), and oh man did it sweat! Didn’t totally ruin it, but it did affect it. I have also heard that people will wrap their dry cakes and box them before putting them in the fridge, then when they take them out, they let it thaw in the wrap and box so the condensation doesn’t affect the cake itself, it only affects the wrap. I haven’t tried that, but some ppl swear by it! I hope this helps! I’ll try the wrap myself too soon! ❤️

    Ιf you put it in the fridge will the design dissolve? Or it's will be ok?

    • @FiveTwoBaker
      @FiveTwoBaker  Місяць тому +1

      It should be fine. The only time it will dissolve is because of condensation. So as long as you have it covered properly and let it come to room temperature (still while covered), slowly, it should be fine. It's shock that causes it to sweat.

    How to store this painted cake on fridge? Thank you

    • @FiveTwoBaker
      @FiveTwoBaker  2 роки тому

      Hi. The biggest problem with cake decor in a fridge is condensation. That happens due to a big temperature change. Given that, my suggestion is to keep the cake stored in a box in the fridge. When you take it out, try to make the temperature change minimal- maybe try having the AC on in the house so its a gradual change, and keep it in the box the entire time so that the condensation form on the box as much as possible. Once its come to your rooms temperature then your cake shouldn't "sweat", or at least not a lot. This will help make sure your decor isn't affected. I hope this helps!

      Jess so I use the paneling method. I have no idea how ppl achieve sharp edges with the draping method. Also, I prefer to have ganache on the outside of my cake. I find buttercream gets soft very quickly, thus losing the sharp edge, and since I work with no AC, it’s just too much hassle for me. It’s a mix. They’re all gel food colors, but some are from Wilton, others americolor, and some chef master.

    • @FiveTwoBaker
      @FiveTwoBaker  3 роки тому +1

      So ya know.... yesssss, butttttt.... not like this. I wouldn’t use this method for buttercream. It would take better with edibleart paints. Also, the painting process would be a bit trickier bc you have to work with a very chilled cake to avoid the buttercream smearing off as you paint. I hope this helps!

    Beauty and the beast is my favorite!! As a baker, are you allowed to sell cakes with characters? Is it a copyright issue? I've seen so many character cakes that bakeries sell but was told by another that it's illegal. Thanks.

    • @FiveTwoBaker
      @FiveTwoBaker  2 роки тому +1

      That's a great question. As far as I know, it's illegal to sell anything with a licensed character on it, unless you have permission to do so (in which case you pay something to the company, or they take a certain % of sales.... something like that is what I remember reading.)
      HOWEVER.... people do it all the time 😂.
      I don't sell cakes because my county has way too many rules, but if I did sell cakes, I wouldn't sell them with characters because I'm just too much of a worrier.

      Artsy Chef ❤️ I haven’t had a problem with bleeding. I also wait for areas to dry fully before going in with another color on or near it. Using alcohol helps the drying. Could you let me know what you’re painting on and what type of colors you use?

    • @FiveTwoBaker
      @FiveTwoBaker  3 роки тому +1

      Artsy Chef so at the risk of sounding like a snob..... I don’t paint on buttercream bc I like IMBC and I just don’t see how I could get a good paint job on it. I know ppl paint on crusting buttercream, but I don’t like the taste. For buttercream I’d go the route of painting with buttercream (palette knife painting). I love painting on fondant! It’s super forgiving and it’s homemade, so I think thin layers of it are tasty and if people don’t like it, it’s easy enough to push aside. I use gel food colors diluted in vodka for painting on fondant. Much more color with a very little amount and it dries very quickly! 💕 Also, i haven’t mentioned it in my videos yet, but now that you’re asking, good watercolor brushes are super important for a good paint job! They don’t have to be super expensive, but a smooth, soft brush helps so much! I hope this helps! ❤️

    • @FiveTwoBaker
      @FiveTwoBaker  3 роки тому +2

      I have not had any issues with bleeding- fondant is pretty absorbent. But definitely make sure your fondant is dry (I speak from experience 😅). Also, you want to take all precautions to keep your cake from sweating. So making sure your layers aren't frozen, and making sure your cake is boxed when in the fridge and stays in the box until it comes to room temp..... those things. Let me know if this isn't clear. 💖

      Hi! Thank you! There are so many ways. You can use gel colors, dry colors, a combination of both. As far as sugar paste, you'll need something stiffer than fondant- so either a gumpaste or fondant with tylose powder. Gumpaste will set up quickly, a fondant with tylose should give you more time in case you need to shape the sugar paste. If you're curious about anything in particular, feel free to ask. 💕 Good luck!
