The other 4 bolts around the engine mount bolts actually allow you to remove the engine to service it without changing the mesh at all so it goes straight back in the right spot.
Yes I know, but the issue needed fixing with getting that bolt out I always tend to remove the engine from the mount, takes 2 seconds to set the mesh anyway ;)

Great to see people getting help with their Nitro engine. But please cover up the airfilter hole when removing it from the carburetor. This will prevent dust and other stuff getting in to the engine.
I would have to disagree slightly, whilst I understand your point about the very vague possibility of dust getting in, Nitro engines on planes do not even have air filters so whilst taking off and landing they are exposed to far more dust getting in than this ever will sat on a workbench in a garage...
Brilliant video mate, I’ve had nitro cars myself and messed with things that didn’t need touching and then ended up with blisters between my fingers and broken pull start , like you said they are meant to be fun , but if you can’t get it going because you’ve messed with the carb you can soon regret even buying it. Thanks for this... I have previously owned electric cars some 30 years ago grasshopper lunchbox hotshot this was my generation! Thought I would have another bash this time I wanted nitro, have bought a ebay tamiya ndf 01 thunder, to be honest I'm struggling to get it running but patience will pay off I'm sure! You tutorials are helping me understand the basics of nitro engines.
I got the Hyper VS, the successor to the SS, with the Hyper 21 engine; one thing I noticed about the engine is that the factory settings and the factory settings according to the manual are COMPLETELY wrong... First of all, the manual says to open up the HSN by just 2 1/2 turns, thats already nearly completely leaned out; you need to set it with the screw flush to the collar (identical to the 4 1/2 turns from the Mac 28 in your video), same goes for the LSN, flush to the collar. Another incorrect setting is the idle gap, the manual says to set it to 1mm, which is far too wide and constantly caused two step idle issues. The engine would suddenly lose RPM after 5-6s in idle and just bog down (stall) when you punched it. Luckily I found somebody that told me to just set it to 0.5mm and suddenly the two step idle was gone and the engine finally ran great! Hobao really isnt doing the Nitro RC hobby any favor with these manuals; I even found a mistak in the manual of the new Hyper MT II, where they list the optional wheel nuts from the Hyper MT I which dont fit!
My suggestion for engine break-in is as follows: For the first tank of fuel, lean the fuel mixture at first so the engine will start easily, then enrich the fuel mixture very quickly until it's so rich it chokes-out if you rev it up. That way there's the maximum possible amount of oil passing through the engine to flush away debris. After the first tank of fuel, remove the heatsink and cylinder-head, and wipe-out the combustion chamber with a cotton swab. You will be surprised and disturbed to see how many little flecks of chrome come out; better to remove them manually than to wait for them to rattle out while the engine is running, because they could get pinched against the side of the piston and scratch the cylinder sleeve. After swabbing the combustion chamber, reassemble the cylinder-head and heatsink, and resume the normal break-in procedure.
I ran nothing but nitro years ago. Had a hyper7 loved it. The prices on nitro fuel right now is why Im a brushless guy now. $40+ a gallon and shipping is just disturbing.
Bloody nitros, they are a pain in the butt but gotta love the noise and smell just not the mess and messing about. Just spent 3 weeks rebuilding a 20 year old kyosho superten fwo4 spurs arms linkages bearings, only problem is now I don't have anywhere to run it can't find a single car park that's smooth enough or not full of stones buggies an truggies for the win road cars 😔.
You make it look so easy, I have an old nitro that I am playing with and having a good time. I don't know where I got it from and I think it has been sitting in the shed for a while, possibly a few years. It has a VX.18 engine. You wouldn't happen to know what the factory settings are? I have got it started by opening the throttle trim but just need to do some fine tuning.
I'm not sure of the VX 18 defaults but try a full turn in from flush on the HSN and LSN, that is usually a good base setting for most engines. Ultimately the default settings are designed just to get the engine started and it is always a "safe setting" , so in other words it is rich. The engine tuning needs to be done based on how it's performing
Its a lot easier just to remove the other 4 outer screws from the engine screws to remove the engine, just saves setting the gear mess when reinstalling 👌
Thanks, but I don't find it particularly challenging to set the gear mesh :) Plus, I had to get that snapped Allen key out anyway. Removing the other 4 screws is good to avoid having to set the mesh again though but it doesn't bother me

I did check out your 10 years old video comparing the 2 buggys (even though the Hobao one was not a Hyper SS), are those points still valid? Which one would you advise for purchase? Thanks a lot for answering :)
Well preheating isn't always necessary, in fact it's not necessary at all - but it does certainly help sometimes to get them started if it's cold! Also gets the engine up to temperature if you're breaking it in, but this one got right up to temp anyway
Correct I need to invest in a decent set of Hex drivers I think, although I've not had any issues with the Turnigy ones, probably because I use the ratchet for the tight stuff

Do you have videos about tuning if a car has a mid speed needle? My first nitro had one and iirc it was really difficult to have 3 needles to tune (excluding the idle speed screw.)
I don't currently as I have never had a need to adjust the Mid range needle, especially on bashing cars. But adjusting it properly can help improve acceleration. However, adjusting it wrongly will mess up the carb big time!
I have the same car and can’t seem to get it running I also set the needles to factory and it is almost impossible to start and has been like this since I got it new any advice?
"decided to subcribe" i've been into the r c stuff for 20 plus years. i have nitro powerd and brushless, the nitro engines can be a little bit, of a pain sometimes but, there still my favorite. i have a kyosho mad force with the gx 21 motor. its hard to find parts for, the things been a good old truck. i decided to put another nitro engine in it. i was wondering what you think would be a good motor to repower it with. i'm having trouble choosing one for it.
I have the ST truggy version of this car and also getting very frustrated with it. Takes ages to get it started and once it does get started after a few mins of running it really over revs when idle and have to have the brake on constantly. when I try and tune that problem out I then get it cutting out at full throttle so its a constant battle and just cant seem to find the answer. Have watched your tuning vids which have helped in some circumstances but just cant get this right. I also continually try to reset to factory settings and start again but keep either getting it reving very high and wanting to take off on idle or cutting out at full throttle. Any tips to find perfect balance?? Is there a best order you should tune in ie Idle screw, then LSN then HSN??
The over revving once warm sounds like your low end needle is too lean . There's not really a particular order to tune but I would start with the HSN as the low end isn't one you want to touch unless necessary
Supposedly Hobao say you are not able to fit a rotostart onto the COPS engine, due to the crankshaft and one way bearing being different However I did so 3 years ago on my car and haven't had an issue Others report that it has damaged the gears inside their roto start backplate! Fit it & see how it goes :)
@@TheRCBiker yes, I watched your video and noticed u replacing the cops with a drill start... I've ordered the same one so I'm hopeful.. thanks for the tuning vids u did, really helped me when I started out.. 👍

It went straight back to single speed, and the 2 speed one returned for refund The 2 speed clutch broke within about 5 minutes of run time, managed to fix it but I could see it being a hassle. Single speed is much better for bashing :)
@@TheRCBiker thanks dude.. I was happy with the single speed anyway. That's unfortunate though.. there's something cool as feck about 2 and 3 speed nitro though they do seem to give problems. Good man
@@RonanKearney1 They sound great when they shift into 2nd but in reality doesn't really achieve much For on road cars 2 speed transmissions are fine but they are a hassle when bashing !
Hi, Josh! I need some new shocks for my traxxas nitro slash 2wd but am not sure what shocks will fit. If you know about any shocks that will fit my car then I would be very happy to know. Jacob from Norway.
Hi Jacob, I'm not sure. Best bet is to measure the length and have a look on eBay! Shocks are the kind of part that are universal, you wont need to get the traxxas part necessarily
cops pullstart is rubbish it comes with a bigger handle and suppose to be easier to pull the pull cord the other pull cord just comes with a smaller handle.
COPS stands for Crank off pull start, the engine has a different kind of crankshaft and one way bearing to suit the cops starter. I'm not sure of the benefits, or of the point of it! Supposedly you are not able to put a drill start onto one of these engines without changing the crankshaft, but I fitted a drill starter to my Hyper 7 3 years ago and it's worked fine! I don't know what they were trying to fix, nothing wrong with the old handle
Nice vid man but a couple of things u didnt mention that i can for the person that owns that car. First of all never use the hex wrenches that have ball ends especially if ur tightening a bolt up a decent amount they almost always break off in the damn bolt. 2nd thing if he didnt already tell u was the reason it had trouble starting was all the needles were way off those needle settings are very important to nitro engines always look in ur manual( if its the stock engine) that comes with the car and it will always tell u what the breakin needle settings are an sometimes what the general setting are for after the break in process also dont forget that the break in process is very important if not done right ur engine wont run worth a crap an u wont have fun with nitros. Thats it thx
I don't know about purchase... I will see if they'll send me one It won't be until I've done the review on the brushless one they've just sent me though :)

Hi there, I have a starting video on my channel specifically aimed at things to check when engine won't start. Check it out :)
is your shop in a outside storage nice
I don't have a shop :)
What is the mid needle ? It has difference with a low speed needle ? Nice video though
Yes this engine has a mid needle
But you don't want to touch it !
Hi iv got the hyper ss and iv got this issue that somtimes it will lose connection for a second any ideas why this is thanks
There's a few possibilities, have you replaced all the batteries? Do you lose the throttle and steering or just one of them?
"decided to subcribe" i've been into the r c stuff for 20 plus years. i have nitro powerd and brushless, the nitro engines can be a little bit, of a pain sometimes but, there still my favorite. i have a kyosho mad force with the gx 21 motor. its hard to find parts for, the things been a good old truck. i decided to put another nitro engine in it. i was wondering what you think would be a good motor to repower it with. i'm having trouble choosing one for it.
Thank you for subscribing :) The Force engines are decent, I've got more of those than anything else at the moment and they all run well
I have the ST truggy version of this car and also getting very frustrated with it.
I have the hobao Ss, great car, and fully agree that cops system is rubbish.. just ordered the roto fastrax roto start... crossing fingers it fits..😂
Supposedly Hobao say you are not able to fit a rotostart onto the COPS engine, due to the crankshaft and one way bearing being different
However I did so 3 years ago on my car and haven't had an issue
Others report that it has damaged the gears inside their roto start backplate!
Fit it & see how it goes :)
@@TheRCBiker yes, I watched your video and noticed u replacing the cops with a drill start... I've ordered the same one so I'm hopeful.. thanks for the tuning vids u did, really helped me when I started out.. 👍
@@TheRCBiker my drill start arrived today.. fitted no problem and started straight up.. no more crappy Cops blisters...
Where are you based mate any chance you could fix my rc been trying for days and it’s driving me mad.
I have a red at volcano s30 hasn’t been ran in 7 years
best get it out then!
Hi im writed coment about my new sc8 week ago about first start so i did everything how you showed and how was recomended but my car wont start i can do everything but dont start fuel is good brand new and car brand new but dont start plug is good and i started losing all hype fun and all hope maybe you have any sugestions how to start i would wery happy
Engine are like fires, they need Fuel, Air and heat to start. One of those is currently missing.
Thanks Bro..Great!!!
You're welcome!
I have the Cage Truggy brushless version.
Very nice :)
Its the same with my buggy, but the compression is so strong it rips every pull starter cord i put on it. Also parts are impossible to find.
What car do you have? :)
@@TheRCBiker Thunder Tiger EB4 S2.5, it is about 3 years old.
Nice video bro😃😄
Thanks :)
@@TheRCBiker No problem man just keep up the good work😃
Hallo Josh, just asking is it the internal side of all tires of the Rc always more ripped then the outer side of the tires ?
Not necessarily, depends how you have the wheels set up :)
TheRCBiker is it normal for the Rc buggy, because I don’t do any change on the wheel set up, all the 4 tire are more bold in the inner side
Are the wheels angled at all?
I stripped 1 screw of my allen flat or sunken screw they call them I believe. Do you know how to get it out? Elastic dont work...
You'll need to cut a slot in it using an angle grinder and then use a flat end screwdriver to get it out
@@TheRCBiker ok thanks for help!
How's that 2 speed coming along in the torro. . should i get my carnage that upgrade. . . I've never owned a 2 speed.
It went straight back to single speed, and the 2 speed one returned for refund
The 2 speed clutch broke within about 5 minutes of run time, managed to fix it but I could see it being a hassle. Single speed is much better for bashing :)
@@TheRCBiker thanks dude.. I was happy with the single speed anyway. That's unfortunate though.. there's something cool as feck about 2 and 3 speed nitro though they do seem to give problems. Good man
@@RonanKearney1 They sound great when they shift into 2nd but in reality doesn't really achieve much
For on road cars 2 speed transmissions are fine but they are a hassle when bashing !
I got a couple of nitro RCs to fix I can send them to you XD
Haha - If I say yes to all of them I'll have to do it as a full time job!
@@TheRCBiker Ok, thanks for answering!!
Hi iv messed my setting on my hyper vs 21 3 port engine, do you know the needle settings would be much appreciated, thanks in advance
Have a look on Google, I don't know them off the top of my head :)
Thanks
I enjoyed that
Glad to hear it !
I'm on my 3rd pull starter on my car you think I'd know better but it happens. Haha
Haha, Yeah it does happen!
I’ve got a hyper 7 but I can’t bind my remote to car just keeps beeping anyone can help ???
The 3 dislikes were obviously brushless fanboys in denial 😂😂😂
Yeah, must've been! Haha, Thanks :)
What is the difference between a cops pullstart and a normal one besides the handle?
cops pullstart is rubbish it comes with a bigger handle and suppose to be easier to pull the pull cord the other pull cord just comes with a smaller handle.
Can you make A Video about how to put oil in A Nitro Kyosho because i can't find the fill in ?😁
What oil are you referring to?
@@TheRCBiker i reffering to Balistol
@@xxers55nexxon75 I'd never heard of Balistol so I had to google it, a multipurpose oil? And where are you wanting to put that, I don't understand?!
Can i have your Email so i can send a picture to of my Problem

Thanks :)
my jato doing my head in trying get it started
Add some fuel directly on top of piston
Check glow plug is bright red
Check Idle Gap is 1.5mm
Return tuning needles to default
It will start!!
Whereabouts in the UK are you?
Dorset
@@TheRCBiker Ah damn ok I'm london :( Nevermind eh
Yeah I'm in contact with the guy over FB, we've been talking separately about the issues
This video was just for you guys to see me fix it !
I would like a nitro but I do love my 8s x maxx
Nice! :)
I like your designs. Shipping to UK possible for the subscription?
What do you mean?
@@TheRCBiker Sorry dude I was watching another video on another tab and left my comment on the wrong one. I enjoyed your video none the less.
Got the old hyper 7
Awesome!
I’ve got a full gallon bottle of 30% nitro fuel. How much do you think it’s worth? 👍
Is it unopened? Depends what fuel it is !
TheRCBiker O’Donnell racing fuel. I’ve just checked and I’ve got 2 bottles. Unopened 👍
Trouble with fuel is you can't send it as lots of couriers don't take fuel (in the UK at least), so it can be difficult to shift!
TheRCBiker yes your correct. I’ve also got Byrons race gen 2 20% and 25%. I have opened those.
NEED MORE
More coming!
Don’t use ball ended Alan keys
Can you please purchase a vrx 2 nitro off of bangood please
I don't know about purchase... I will see if they'll send me one
It won't be until I've done the review on the brushless one they've just sent me though :)
