- I have a bit of a long winded chat about armour in motorcycle gear, CE rider gear, and the difference between impact and abrasion protection in motorcycle gear and what that means for new riders when they pick up some protective riding gear.
So if you're a new motorcycle rider wondering about motorcycle armour, motorcycle gear and what it all means, this may answer your questions!

Those Fly Racing Pivot 6's are great; I wiped out @ 40kpm slamming to the ground, but the Pivot's took all the force and abrasion. Not a scratch or bruise
Yep I rate them! Have had quite a few offs in them and they've done a great job. Quite scratched up now, but not a mark on me.
I'm new to this, do you mean 40km/h or does kpm means something I dont know.
These gear look like they're for racing, but I'm planning to get one just for those long distance ride, even though I'm going probably mostly 40-60km/h I think it's just worth getting these kind of protection just in case.

Love the Fly Racing Pivot knee guards. Electric Unicycle has taken over most of my Motorcycle routes now. BUT Armor is now #1 priority. Had a superman dive at 45mph. Slid on all fours. Not a scratch on my body. Gear is amazing!
It's amazing when you can walk away from something like that without a scratch because of protective gear. Does make you realise just how important and useful it is!

I commute on an ebike, but I'm taking MSF course soon. I just bumped a curb and fell at about 25mph. After fucking up my leg and getting some nasty road rash on my arm I'm looking into some proper gear. Thanks for the info!
Definitely worth the investment, and even though it can be a bit annoying to wear at first, once you get used to it, you'll feel naked without the gear! Hope you're healing up ok!

what armor would you suggest for underneath your clothing? (Leather Jacket)
I would say throw away that back foam as soon as you get the jacket and put something like D30 CE2 armor protection. That foam is useless. When I get new gear, I replace all armor to CE2
What do u recommend for makeshift armor? Like knee pads/protections and so

@@jero2955 your knees would be safe. But what about your ass, legs? Regular clothes cannot stand heat and friction. It's not built for that, look at some UA-cam videos where they test regular jeans vs riding jeans. It's same for jacket or gloves. :) Invest in to riding gear, cheap if you can't afford, but still better then regular clothes ;)

I'm not sure really, the back protectors in many jackets are high density foam, it's possible you could source some with similar impact absorption properties and shape them to suit. You'd still ideally want the armour held fairly snug in your gear and against your body though to ensure it would be in the right place, while the gear needs to be fairly sturdy to survive sliding down the road. Seeing if you can find motorcycle gear second hand might be a better bet, so it's something designed specifically for that use, even if it's second hand armour you can wear under other gear.

BMW are looking to add a crumple zone to motorcycles. I wear chest, coccyx, back, hip, knee, shoulder, elbow, neck, wrist, ankle and groin armour. Might aswell go all out when your on the road. What price tag is your life worth? Over time your body will get stronger with heavier weight on it. You'd be suprised how many groin injuries there are.
Where can I buy groin protection?
Interesting question. Only thing I can think of is padded shorts or pants which you wear under other gear. Not sure how specific the protection is there though, I think they are normally recommended for comfort and breathability, or add hip and upper thigh armour.
Is D3o’s knee and hip armour can also be used for the elbow and shoulder, because it looks alot similar

Thanks! The hip armour tends to be fairly light compared to the rest. It may be possible to move them around, but they are also different thicknesses and widths, so how well it works or how comfortable that is may vary.
Recently I bought a jacket with Knox Microlock CE Level 2 protector. While just ceecking the elbow protectors, I tried to flex it the opposite way and it just tore off from the corner. Is this normal? Aren't we supposed to flex it like that?
Good question! I've found older armour has more of a habit of getting brittle and breaking into pieces, but that's normally after a few years at least. There should be a decent amount of flex in most armour, especially if it's that rubberised material, which has a lot of give.
Great reviews as usual is there any recommended knee braces for road riding or can you just use motocross ones
I haven't heard of any road specific ones personally - but I haven't really looked either - it's all been the motocross ones. The more road specific stuff mainly seems to be knee guards, so not in the same realm of protection.

I only really wear them if I'm doing adventure riding, so a bit of road and mainly off-road, as I'm pretty crash happy in the gnarly stuff. I just run jeans with knee armour for purely road riding as you're stilling getting decent slide protection in other areas. Not to say you can't... @@MrZerfus
It's hard to find good gear for hot weather.. Knox armored mesh shirt is the only brand I have found with Anti Abrasion mesh ..
Yep, I think the more breathable and ideal for really hot weather you go, the harder it is to get a really good level of protection and you start to see some differences in what's on offer. I haven't tried the armoured/kelvar lined shirts yet, but it seems a great solution for a casual but protective piece of gear.

What kind of riding are you thinking you'll be doing? There's lots of choices out there, for different seasons, different types of riding, leather versus textile, whether you need wet weather/waterproofing, etc. Plus the kind of budget you're on.
For pants I normally go for a kevlar reinforced jean for casual riding, and the last few sets I've had, have also had knee or hip armour included. That's been Dririder gear which is more an Australian brand. A set of overpants do the trick if I need waterproofing or warmth, or even just a whole wet weather suit.
For jackets I have quite a few, I've got a great leather/mesh summer jacket that breathes amazingly but obviously doesn't have as much protection as something like my leather or ADV jacket.

biker. what i am looking for is some riding jacket and pants that will give me good protection and at the same time i dont want to look like exaggerating bcz in my country other rider laughs at who wear safety protection , i know it's very stupid😞😞.
Is there an option if you want it to be bulky to protect your neck, spine, chest shoulders, arm, leg and thigh even your back ?
There's more dirt bike gear which incorporates chest armour and neck protection that interacts with your helmet - check out neck braces. Some shorts also offer thigh protection, with knee guards or bracers tending to cover a fair bit of your leg.

Generally when I use it like that I'll just wear a textile jacket over the top, with the armour removed from the jacket, which should work out pretty similar as far as protection. You do lose a bit of protection if you're just running the knee armour and say a set of motocross or similar pants, instead of riding jeans. Better impact protection for the knees but significantly less abrasion protection overall. I've fit a set of textile waterproof pants over the top of the knee armour though too.

How thick is the Spidi Warrior back protector?
Maybe 40-50 mm? It's a lot thinner at the edges, more like 10 mm, with a hardened outer layer on the outside for rigidity and a softer 'foam' on the inside.

Do d3o pads rip after years of flexing?
I'm not sure if it was the d30 but I've had some of that internal armour rip, or just kind of disintegrate into large pieces, but that's normally been after many years.

can D3O armour be used in race suits?
Good question, with my suits everything but the back armour has been built in, so I'm not sure about swapping it out. That may be a possibility with pricier suits though, where I guess it'd just be a matter of ensuring you're happy with the level of protection on offer from whatever you use.
@@MotoJournoKris i have a rst suit and the armour is removable and for future if the armour starts to break, i would like to replace it with D3O but all i see is D3O being used in textiles jackets
@@Speedy95Motovlogs Interesting, I would guess for track use you'd want the CE Level 2 stuff, for higher protection. And obviously a good fit inside the gear is important too.
You should put up links to brands and Models you like .. EX3 .. I have no idea what Country you are from Austrailia I guess.. There are so many brands can't keep track of them all ..

@@MotoJournoKris I did find the Brand and Web site.. Looks to me like people in Australia are Famiar with the Brand .. I found that Brand on E-Bay in the USA but not at REvzilla..
I bought a pair of Speed Skates in the Netherlands with Kangaroo hyde Leather...
Looks to be a very nice Jacket / Shirt .. the Web site did not show the linter.. My Knox Armored riding shirt does not have any liner..
The actual mesh material is Anti Abrasion .. When I hit a deer and went for a slide .. It ripped right through the cloth type mesh on the top of my forwar.. my elbow and bottom of the forearm had plastic armore which held up well ..
@@mikeskidmore6754 Yep Dririder is Australian, so quite well known here, but less-so overseas. Fly Racing and Spidi are a bit more universal in comparison!

@@mikeskidmore6754 Yep it gets crazy when you start looking internationally, there's so many local brands these days, plus lots of new ones. There's been a few bits of gear I've tried, having never heard of the brand before only to realise they are huge somewhere else in the world lol.

Yep very uncommon for road gear, you see it a bit more with the more serious off-road armour, with chest protection.
@@MotoJournoKris very true ..Mx gear it's common ..but not road stuff ..I just don't understand .. surely it would be a good idea ....guess you could wear Mx gear on road if found something suitable .....
@@oldfartuk Yep, it very much seems to be the old trade off, with most motorcycle gearing having to offer some balance between comfort, protection, affordability and coverage. And you can always strip the armour out of most road jackets and wear MX gear underneath like you say, which I've seen some adventure riders do, to get the best of both worlds.
Look into Forcefield armor. You wear it under any jacket you own and they offer tops with chest protection. It's some of the best armor you can buy.

Yep there's a lot of variance between what brands include as far as armour, but there's also some variance between the D30 CE armour they use, with the Level 2s offering more protection and probably being what you want if you're worried about higher levels of protection.

P.s. Don't be afraid of European standards. E.g. for helmets ECE is shit laods better than DOT
Yep I would always recommend going for ECE, if you look into DOT it's not really a standard you want to rely on, sadly, as it isn't enforced/stringently tested.
