Still my favorite BMW of all time. When you look at this and the monstrosities BMW are making today it's enough to make you cry. This is coming from a guy who only buys old school American cars. But man if I could afford an 8 series as clean as this I'd do it in a heartbeat.
MAN I miss old BMW! The E90, E46, E39, and E38 were in my opinion peak BMW. The F and G series chassis in my opinion have lost most of what BMW was known for, “The Ultimate Driving Machine”, now they’re the ultimate tech machine. Will be buying a Porsche instead!
F chassis bmw’s are the pinnacle of the ultimate driving machine. Nothing beats the driving dynamics, balanced weight distribution, Short wheel base, and nimble chassis of the f87 m2. It’s the closest thing to the nimble 3 series coupes of the past. But if Porsche is more your speed I don’t blame you, however get ready to dish out overs and take major losses on every purchase.
love the dashboard, straightforward, and business like. it’s only business is driving. no unnecessary screens or gadgets. after all, you’re driving a car, not your living room.
The only thing i would do is upgrade them to hid and have them open only about 70% of the way. This in the tuner scene is known as a "lazy eye" mod. It is also in dire need of a great but subtle exhaust system. It is not only being choked but also that engine needs to be heard man. I would of course keep all the original stuff.
we used to have one in the 90s bought it when it was a year old. all Black, and most were automatics. Taking a buisiness trip to Frankfurt, just about 400 km distance in regularily under 2 h. After arriving, you felt like you had just come from a relaxed road trip, didnt break a sweat; very little noise even when hitting the top speed of 250 kph. Thats what this car was made for, no spectacular sports car vib. The same trip with a 1999 Porsche 996 (911) in pretty much the same time I arrived feeling like I came from the race track. Loved the Porsche, but it just felt so great speeding, and each day I wondered if cops would take my drivers licence or if I would still have it at the end of the day :)
the 850 was the replacement of the 6 series, which was at its time a great car. Developement cost of the 850 surpassed the 1 000 000 000 marks (about 400 000 000 Dollars at the time) being the most expensive, which included lots of new technology later added to other models. At the time, they were cut of at a top speed of 250 kph. Tires, if I remember correctly had an Index of ZR, meaning they were rated for vehicles going faster than 240 kph; they had a very smoth ride, so, again, at the time it was probably the most silent (sports) car of the era. Other cars had soundsystems that adjusted the volume according to the noise the speed was producing, making them louder; I dont believe that ever happened in the 850. Are tires with the High speed indes, Z , W, ZR even sold in the US or elswhere? Wouldnt make much sence if you cant drive it, since the wear on them is incredibal high; I had a pair that lastet only 8000 miles... have a good one
7:20 And to me that's how a car should be. Who has the time for track days anyway, not to mention people gets mad about buying a car that costs more for way less. Car should be comfortable with a nice interior, fast while having creature comforts & reliable.
BMW M70/M73 are fantastic engines. They are not feeling punchy at all with all this smooth acceleration from idle to the redline, but will actually go like stink if you look at the needle on the speedometer... The moment I first drove an E38 750i I knew I had to have it. When people say that diesels have good torque, they honestly have no idea what they are talking about... I thought so as well until I got my big V12.
Such an amazing car. That dashboard truly looks like an airplane cockpit without being weird. And I'm not going to even talk about the design and the engine, those speak for themselves Great vid:)
Also...In my opinion, one of the best interior designs BMW has ever done, this one seems a thousand times more elegant to me than so much damn wood simulation.
The segment from 1:50 onwards is just superb. I unsubscribed quite a while ago, due to the lack of interaction with the car's features on several videos... I'm so glad to see them back! I hope that you keep it up.
I used to detail cars on the weekends back in college and the BMW dealership across the street had us do a few of these that came in off the truck. They were so nice! I remember feeling like a million dollars driving it the 1/4 mile down the road back to the dealership. I don't ever recall seeing a manual one though, but it was long ago. Great video, thank you for the trip down memory lane.
850i, 850CSI, E9 3.0 CSL, and M6 from the 80’s are favorite BMW’s of all time. The funny thing about the 850i’s at 100 mph the windows go up automatically.
sounds like a pair of straight 6s strapped together, but with a bit more rumble. it's lovely. I miss these BMW interiors, makes me miss my E39 530i M-Sport.
8:07 mid 90’s cars with the thin doors were so nice before side impact ratings made doors all thick and chunky. You don’t realize how much a thick heavy door adds not only weight but makes the cabin feel small.
People always say that the automatic suits this car more... well i kinda agree but that 6spd manual is fantastic🤌🤌 never realised how quiet these are inside
V12 and a manual in an old BMW, what else could you ask for? Toned down spec for a relaxing video, to be fair no "intro" for the no commentary intro was even necessary. Very relaxing watch. Always love to take a break because I know when I'm back I'll have the next couple morning/afternoon coffees packed with my favourite creators' videos. 😁
I owned a 1996 850 in azure blue with light silver grey interior. I sold it while still under warranty before it could BMW, Break My Wallet. I remember driving 135 mph across the Arizona desert.
I realize it's a drive but all the way down on RT2 is The Mohawk Trail. Would be awesome to see a scenic drive in a special car on that road. Probably more of a cruiser.
That looked like such a peaceful morning drive, Ted. The BMW v12 seems drama free in nature. I love old BMWs like this, E30, 2002, Bavaria, Z3, but I’m not a fan of the modern Turbo ones.
I think the E31 is the best looking car BMW ever made. Of course the 850CSi is the ultimate but this is still a very good looking car. It captures the handsome muscularity of the BMW saloons of the time, but in a pretty coupe body.
Perfect technique closing the hood only touching the center portion. The front outer corners of the hood are extremely easy to bend due to the cutouts for the pop up headlights. Once bent, very difficult to get the headlight cover panels to align properly with the hood.
Thanks for working through the gears quietly with the radio off. What a motor…and a manual! This car sounds and looks like it should: a big expensive GT. This was a large car back in its day, only the 7 series was longer…but the visibility has to be outstanding with those slender A and C pillars. Is this BMW’s most beautiful in-house design?
My ultimate dream car. I don’t know when or how but I swear I will own one some day. That’s also very close to my dream spec too, the white looks gorgeous on them
A 12 cylinder and a manual transmission? It doesn’t get any better than that. And when you put both into a REALLY gorgeous car that’s actually made well, you’ve hit the jackpot. However, if you’re a mechanic and have to work on this car it would probably be a nightmare.
V12 manual is a dream combination. Consider yourself lucky
...and a very rare one !
@@asthalisEven overhere,in the Netherlands. We,Dutch People are very BMW minded but the 8 series are very rare
Meh. By 1994, the Ford Mustang Cobra had a 4.6 liter V8 that had even more power than the V12.
I love 90s BMW, three was a button for every function and a digital display for every component. 30+ years later and still looks amazing.
Exactly. Today it's just a ghastly screen that in 20 years will be outdated, yet this design is timeless.
This BMW aged like a fine wine. Also that V12 can balance a coin.
So can the Benzo's 6 litre V12.

In this era BMW seems to want at all costs to look like Batman's car
@@armendarizosvaldo26They're targeting the Chinese market and therefore Chinese aesthetic sensibilities these days.
True that! I feel the exact same way.
Back when BMW still made decent cars. They’re a train wreck now, which is just one of the reasons the resale on them is so low.
Replace the e90 with the e30, e34 and e36 and I agree
And those new 🐽 grilles …
G series M models are peak BMW and I say that as an absolute E36 fanatatic.

V12 manual, wow, a real driver's dream.
The cockpit layout and design of this era was so good.
This car is still so good looking ! Pop up headlamps will never not be cool!
Such a shame they outlawed them
For real

I like the different format. Right into the nice V12 rumble.
I really liked the silent ASMR type of the walk around the car. Nice touch.
Excepted the engine running for nothing, pure waste of oil.

I wonder how quiet it is relative to other BMWs of the era. Does it sit somewhere between an E39 and an E38 in that regard?

One of the best piece of engineering by BMW. 850i, E39 and m6 grand coupe most beautiful cars made by BMW.
They should have put the S70/2 into an M8 just because.
