Remember this race and thought Fort Devon was a machine much like an earlier version of Denman, never ran to his form and can't take anything away from Midnight Court who ran the race of his life in the biggest race of all
In response to earlier notes, I think Killiney died at Ascot's downhill open ditch; Brown Lad won an Irish Grand National and was a brilliant horse. John Francome executed a superb piece of race-riding, gambling on a gap to get past Fort Devon with a decisive thrust. However, he was tying up a bit up the hill, which allowed Brown Lad to get close. The race had been abandoned in March and this was run during the April meeting which mucked up the jumping calendar a bit.
@@quick46 Quite agree with you sir and very underrated. Midnight Court was a good horse but a little overrated. Brown Lad was a gallant genuine horse who stayed for ever n reminds me of Spanish Steps. Kind regards Glynn n greetings from Stourbridge West Midlands UK 🤝
oh i understand you now...just thought it didnt make sense if he didnt get going till after 2 and a half miles and the Gold Cup was too shrt for him..Bit before my time so not that clued up on the horse!

I remember it very well midnight court winning 78 gold cup i missed school and saved my dinner money and Pocket money ,5-2 I GOT,
Very sad day when midnightcourt died while racing as i won my first gold cup .loved that horse

midnight court lucky to see him win a hunter chase at newcastle in 1982 even then quality jumper
