when ever people talking about great horses they always mention arkle ,millhouse ,golden miller, dawn run, kauto star and denman.....yet somewhere along the line lescargot has been forgotten about ...2 gold cups and first second and third in the national IMPRESSIVE!
What a great horse L’Escargot was. Former Gold Cup winner, real class and when he won this, well in the veteran stage. Tougher than a coffin nail, the snail was anything but slow and he gave his all every race. The first horse to find a weakness in the mighty Red Rum, Teasy Weasy Raymonds Rag Trade would do Red Rum the next year, L’Escargot still had that class about him when he accomplished this win. So good to see him again, an era where the national was still a test not the pantomime of the modern era.
Interesting editing of the stands to make it look as though there was a decent crowd there that day. There was actually fewer than 10000 people there that day. The then owner of Aintree had massively hiked admission prices for the meeting and the public stayed away in droves. Ladbrokes took over management of the Grand National meeting from the following year.
Best time for nationals the 70s, 2 huge legends that will live together in everyone's hearts forever, lescargot, red rum, glad I was here to see it all 🐴🐎
People forget that poor Spanish Steps had the misfortune to be around at the same time as these two, beating everything else bar Crisp in '73 in 3 successive Nationals.
Tommy Carbury one of the best riders ever ever

Red rum was actually giving a dual gold cup winner weight.....great race
@@beverleymorris167 Just remember how much weight Crisp carried when Red Rum won his 1st National.
@@fawltyoldboybasil.2178 👍👍👍
Crisp was a exceptional horse.
L'Escargot won the Irish Champion hurdle and started second fav for the Champion hurdle itself
L'escargot was some horse maybe not given the recognition he deserved
Touching down together last 2 fenences.was magical.
Yes, two very special horses. Both all time greats.

Shame on Jeremy Glover jockey of the back peddling veteran Beau Bob after running prominently on the first circuit.
L'Escargot was a much classier horse than Red Rum but Rummy was an Aintree specialist and deserves all the accolades .
L'Escargot top flight hurdler too
For Red Rum to give so much weight and still make it a race was incredible. Great race.
According to Brian fletcher it was the soft going that beat rummy more than the weight he was giving away to a dual gold Cup winner.
I had a £1 Win on L'Escargot out of my Paper round money at 14/1 - That's when £14 was worth something!!
I had 50p ew on rummy and lescargot.happy days.
Me too
Thank you!!!.wat a race!! Had everything in this race!!!

Red rum was not going you beat l’escargo in 1975 weight and the ground saw to that

Can we get the full coverage including pre and post race analysis of the 1975, 1976 and 1977 grand nationals PLEASE 🙏
Great jockeys crowd of puffs we have today
....nice to see the extra BBC coverage before and after the race.....thanks.....
...High Ken was a class horse...but around Aintree Jockeys should have been paid danger money to ride him.....
I used to follow High Ken back then good horse when he got round but he did fall quite a lot.
@@1524dav ....think he fell in the Gold Cup and b/d the hot favourite Pendil....
@@chatham43
He did indeed bring down Pendil and broke my heart, disliked him ever since.
Thank you
